In the distant and wonderful year of 1984, a very famous Soviet car manufacturer released a car that was technically not related to the Fiat 124. They called the car Sputnik, and on the export version there was the inscription “Samara”.

Over time, the export name became established in the Russian, rather than the Soviet, market, and consumers affectionately and affectionately nicknamed it “chisel.”

Then there were restylings, modifications, sedan versions. A dozen were born on the basis of the platform, then Priora branched off from Kalina and Granta. For 30 years, this platform has been changed, modified and improved.

And in 2015, AvtoVAZ released a technically new car, which should replace the same Priora. And two years later, its new version appeared, which means it’s time to test drive the Lada Vesta 2022.

Design

It’s difficult to talk about design, because everyone has their own ideals and everyone compares them with them. Everyone can decide for themselves by seeing the Lada Vesta in the video.

What is bad about appearance? There is something bad in the rear arch area. If the rear suspension is semi-independent, then a normal trunk can be made only due to the height of the rear part. That’s what they did, and it wasn’t only Vesta who suffered this misfortune.

Many cars would be more beautiful if the manufacturer did not strive for the cheapness and simplicity of the rear axle.

Personally, I don’t like this branded X stamping on the side. There is fire in front, but on the sides it somehow looks tacky, in my opinion.

Well, let's not get into the jungle of tastes and colors. By the way, the color choice has now become very bright and rich.

In total, we have an appearance that does not leave anyone indifferent and is recognizable. This is a confident step forward.

The interior is standard for budget subcompacts. Although you could play with X's. A large number of edges and curves distracts from the quality of materials, while the use of such a technique would be justified - X Design.

Didn’t guess or were afraid to scare the conservative audience? In fact, we get a simple and standard interior for the class and price segment.

And we will make Avtovaz, as usual, an amendment to the old. Let's say: “Well, cooler than in Priora.” Well, I’ll add, even Logan will get nervous.

Vesta Cross Concept video

The car still exists in concept status, so there is only one video - the concept of the Lada Vesta Cross 2022 station wagon. Judging by the video presented by AvtoVAZ, the Lada Vesta Cross SW will not be an SUV, but an all-terrain station wagon.

Comparing these cars is one of the saddest tests. And that's why.

Production began back in September, but all the cars were sold out in one week.

There is no single date; dealers will hold their presentations within two months.

Both cars will enter the market at the same time, but with different price tags: let’s find out whether it makes sense to overpay for the crossover version.

There is less than a month left before the start of sales, we are finding out whether the new Vestas are worth considering for purchase.

The all-terrain cross modification will cost at least 775.9 thousand rubles, sales will start on October 26.

Ergonomics

But Logan has a reason to be nervous: the panels and design inside are only half of the interior, and the other half is ergonomics.

And the VAZ Vesta makes two daring attacks at once.

Firstly, the steering column is adjustable not only in height, but also in reach. And here all those who are built on the B0 cart immediately cringe.

The second slap in the face for Logan and some Renault models is that the head unit is located at chest level, and not at belly level. Even though it glares.

Mechanical settings of the chair are present:

  • in height,
  • longitudinal arrangement,
  • backrest tilt
  • and there is also a cushion under the back.

The seats do not have a special level of comfort, but this is not a minus because in the budget segment you will not find cars with comfortable seats.

Ease of configuration

However, the aesthetic appeal of the Lada Vesta’s interior is only half the success. The second half is the convenience of a beautiful interior, expressed in a lot of details.

The front seats, starting with the “Comfort” configuration, receive adjustable heating, and a productive and powerful air conditioner is built into the design itself. Passengers will not freeze in the car in winter and will not need open windows in summer.

The front seats are adjustable in angle from the basic version of the Lada Vesta. The driver's steering wheel in the same basic configuration can already be adjusted by rollout. Unfortunately, the ability to adjust both the seats and the steering wheel in terms of tilt, height, and rollout appears only when purchasing Vesta in the “Lux” assembly - however, the level of convenience allows this model to stand out among many others presented in the segment.

The manufacturer paid attention to safety. Starting with the Classic trim, the driver and all four passengers each receive a seat belt—which includes visible indicators if the passenger or driver is driving unbelted. The basic assembly includes a driver airbag and, optionally, a front passenger airbag. In subsequent trim levels, airbags for rear passengers also appear, and later - side airbags, which fix passengers and the driver in their places and prevent lateral sliding with subsequent impact.

Thanks to its customization capabilities, the car is comfortable even for fairly tall drivers and passengers (above 190 cm). Very few models presented in class B can boast of this. The Lada Vesta passed all the necessary crash tests, and the safety level of its interior was recognized as close to ideal (of course, for the maximum configuration).

Controls

The controls are all standard and familiar in their places. Visibility is very good. The head unit is equipped with a 7-inch touch screen; you need to press it carefully, the screen falls in a little. The interface is overloaded, this is clearly visible on the radio. A lot of things. What kind of head unit is there?

We have:

  • navigation system CityGuide
  • rear view camera with parking sensors
  • We can connect the phone via Bluetooth

There is no possibility of full synchronization with a smartphone via Mirrorlink, Apple carplay and Android Auto systems.

But in vain, I think.

It would be better if they didn’t install navigation, but just the opposite, they added the ability to synchronize. I have navigation on my phone. It would be much cheaper and more practical for a budget sedan.

Space at the rear

In one of my videos I said that I love D class sedans for their rear space. Well, I’ll continue the thought: I don’t like B-class sedans, but specifically in the case of the Lada Vesta, everything is not so bad, I would even say good.

I sat down behind myself, height 176 cm. There was more than enough space for legs and knees. Not enough for feet. Due to the poor design of the grooves on which the front seats are installed. There is a central tunnel; we won’t talk about the third passenger at all.

  • The sofa is absolutely flat and hard
  • Backrest tilt more or less
  • The space above the head is not enough: 2 and a half palms.
  • There is a headrest
  • No air ducts
  • No heating
  • No armrest.

Hold the glass in your hands and remember that you should not be in an aggressive environment for more than 40 minutes.

In general, this is B class. Far from the worst option. But still B class.

Engine

Under the hood a 1.6-liter naturally-aspirated petrol engine with 106 horsepower can be installed. This engine is combined with a five-speed manual transmission and an automated five-speed manual transmission.

And a new modification has also appeared - this is the 1.8 engine. The new VAZ one has 122 horsepower.

And it is combined, as you probably think, with both a mechanical and an automated manual transmission. But no! Only VAZ robot.

I already got acquainted with this engine when I tested the new Lada Xray. The engine is peppy, responsive, and really okay. But I got to know it using a manual transmission, where I decided which gear to engage when.

Now let's see how things are going with the robot. Make yourself comfortable, we'll bomb.

Engines and dynamic characteristics of Lada Vesta

Three types of gasoline engines were chosen as the main power units for the LADA Vesta. Two of them have a volume of 1.6 liters. Vazovskiy develops a power of 106 hp. s., and the engine from the Renault-Nissan Alliance is 114 hp. With. The third unit is a completely new development by AvtoVAZ. It has a volume of 1.8 liters and a power of 123 hp. With. Cars with this engine began going on sale at the end of March 2016.

The transmission is represented by a five-speed manual transmission and an automatic transmission, the role of which is played by the AMT robotic automatic transmission.

The sedan received good dynamics. With a manual transmission, it accelerates to one hundred kilometers per hour in 11.8 seconds. AMT is somewhat slow and gives indicators of 12.8 s. The maximum speed of the car is within 178 km per hour.

In the promotional film “Together on Vesta,” a LADA Vesta sedan and an MI-2 helicopter competed in a speed test drive. This original solution showed how well Vesta picks up speed. Before reaching maximum speed, the sedan managed to overtake the helicopter several times. The car was driven by the famous Russian racer Yana Sotova.

Ladovsky robot

For the Lada Vesta, a robot with one clutch is, of course, not ideal, but the whole point is that you need to be able to use it. Like mechanics.

Why are there no complaints about the mechanics, because everything depends on the driver. And today “people” have already begun to believe that the machine must do everything. And to demand skills and abilities from a person is arrogance. How quickly the times when you even had to know how to brake have sunk into summer.

Everything in the box is very simple: if you want comfort, go. The main thing is that you will be automatically comfortable. If you want daring dynamics, switch to manual mode and don’t forget to release the gas when switching, just like on a manual. And everything will be quite good. In general, if used correctly, it is a normal box.

Brakes

The brakes are good and grippy. Many people overlook the fact that VAZ began making normal brakes. It seems like it goes without saying. But no!

If you remember the classics and the “chisel”, now the brakes are amazing, I’ll tell you.

I'm also pleased with the handling. Compared to the X-ray, which is built on a Renault platform, VAZ’s own platform looks much sharper and more precise in terms of handling. Logans are definitely passing by, Solaris and Polo are nearby. I don’t know about the new Solaris yet, we’ll compare later.

Smooth ride and suspension - without any complaints.

Clearance 178 mm. It’s immediately obvious that they know what roads the car will be driving on. The suspension does not break through bumps, the body on the Grebenka sways, but not much.

Fuel consumption

The vehicle's stated consumption is 6 liters of gasoline per 100 km on the highway. By the way, you can pour 92. And 9.3 liters per 100 kilometers around the city. This is a passport expense.

But in real conditions I got about 10 liters. I must say that I pedaled quite aggressively, as I was experimenting with the VAZ gearbox. In general, more than stated, since this is a mixed cycle, after all, and not just a purely urban one. But the consumption, in my opinion, is very good.

What about sound insulation? She is.

Closest competitors

Whom to oppose Vesta? We are contrasting the Korean “brides” - these are the Kia Rio and Hyundai Solaris. They are more expensive, both when purchasing and in other respects when servicing.

It can be compared with the Renault Logan, but, in my opinion, it is too boring for active competition with such a bright car as the Lada Vesta.

And for good measure, I’ll mention the Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Polo and Skoda Rapid. But they compete with it only in an empty base with a manual transmission. Then the price tags run far away.
