Stability and controllability on snow When driving on a snowy track, experts from the Internet portal “[email protected]” looked at the lap time as a comprehensive indicator of grip, but also assessed the behavior of the tire. Does it forgive mistakes such as twisting the steering wheel or too much speed when entering a turn? Track time (sec) on snow and stability on snow (points). Temperature 0 C Result: Pirelli Ice Zero showed the best time. However, at the limit the front axle is torn off quite sharply. The Hakkapeliitta 9 is forgiving, but the Nordman 7 still skids the rear axle a little more than is necessary for the average driver. Bridgestone Spike-02, Hankook i'Pike RS and Gislaved 200 suddenly break into drifts and skids, requiring delicate and fast taxiing. It’s not clear what to expect from the Yokohama iceGuard Stud iG55: either skidding or stability in the same turn at the same speed. Passability This time the test experts were lucky - a lot of snow fell. The depth of the cover was 19 cm! Such rubble occurs at least once a year in many Russian cities, when the entrances and exits to the courtyard are filled up. Vesta's ground clearance made it possible to take measurements in such deep snow without getting stuck. Result: Michelin X-Ice and Nordman 7 plowed the virgin snow without straining. At Bridgestone and Hankook, Vesta got stuck a couple of times and had to be reversed. The Hakkapeliitta 9, with the shallowest tread (8.9 mm), also did not row very confidently. Acceleration and braking on ice A thick layer of snow on the roof of the test tunnel did not allow the use of satellite Racelogic for measurements; the testers had to switch to the Datron optical complex. Testing indoors allows you to achieve reproducible results that are not affected by wind, sun, or temperature changes. The Hankook Winter i'Pike RS performed poorly - they stopped on average 3 meters further than everyone else. Lateral grip on ice Compared to the previous year, an ice circle was added to the traditional tests. The driver, gradually accelerating, drives along a circle with a diameter of 270 meters with ESP turned on until it is activated, thereby reducing the human factor during measurements, and the lateral grip of tires on ice comes to the fore. Lap time (sec) on ice Result: The new Hakkapeliitta 9 with two types of studs (for lateral and longitudinal grip) have gone into another dimension. The difference in speed is such that the Nokian will catch up with the Yokohama iceGuard IG55 in 5 laps! Pirelli and Michelin performed well. Bridgestone Spike-02 showed poor lateral grip on slippery surfaces. Stability on ice The track with different turns helped answer the question of complex grip on ice, as well as how predictable the tire would skid for the average driver. Lap times were noted and stability scores were given - the higher the better. Braking on wet asphalt In winter, wet asphalt in cities is a typical occurrence. On each set of tires, the test experts accelerated to 93 km/h and made emergency brakes in 6 attempts. Result: For the first time in many generations, Hakkapeliitta was among the leaders in braking distance on wet asphalt. The Gislaved Nord Frost 200 also performed well. The Yokohama brakes four meters worse on wet asphalt - this is equivalent to the length of a car. Wet stability Lateral grip on wet roads was tested on an artificially irrigated track. And, as in winter disciplines, the experts especially carefully monitored the car’s behavior in turns to see if there would be an unexpected skid. Result: Just like in braking, the Hakkapeliitta 9 has the best time and safe handling. Gislaved also performed well. A tendency to skid on wet asphalt was found in the Yokohama iG55 and Bridgestone Spike-02. Braking on dry asphalt In cities with a population of over a million, dry asphalt in winter is also becoming commonplace. On each set, braking was done from 93 km/h, and the braking distance from 90 km/h to 5 was taken into account in order to neutralize the response time of the braking system. Result: The worst result is the Nordman 7. The Hankook i'Pike RS and Bridgestone Spike-02 also performed poorly. And the shortest braking distance was shown by Yokohama iG55, which failed all tests on snow, ice and wet asphalt. Acoustic comfort Noise was assessed using an expert method (the higher the score, the quieter the tire). After all, a hum, which is lower in decibels, can be perceived by a person as unpleasant and intrusive. The measurements were carried out on asphalt. It is important to understand that the higher the class of the car, the less the noise of the studs will bother you. And in “Vesta” it’s loud in any case. Result: Gislaved and Hankook turned out to be the quietest. And the most uncomfortable ones are Pirelli. Nokian and Bridgestone are also loud, but a little less annoying. Ride smoothness Smoothness was assessed on snowy and asphalt roads in the driver's and rear passenger seats. Bottom line: Hankook Winter i'Pike RS and Gislaved Nord Frost 200 in size 185/65R15 showed themselves in two ways: small irregularities are transmitted in detail to the cabin, and large ones are softly absorbed. The most pleasant were the Michelin X-Ice North 3 with a soft sidewall, and the most uncomfortable were the Bridgestone Blizzak Spike-02 and Yokohama iG55. Side Cut Resistance A side cut usually cannot be repaired and the tire must be replaced. Moreover, for safety reasons, one tire is not enough. As last year, the test experts used a 92 mm high block as an obstacle. Each time the acceleration began from the same place, and each time the tire was rotated so that the impact fell in a new area. Not only the final tire breakdown was noted, but also intermediate deteriorations, starting at 40 km/h and in increments of 5 km/h. Unfortunately, the failed Mercedes-Benz C-Class “carrier” did not allow us to complete testing. Therefore, sidewall strength data was not included in the final table and is presented here for reference only. Result: Pirelli Ice Zero has the strongest sidewall; Bridgestone also resisted breakdown for a long time. The Nokian Nordman suffered a hernia at 45 and 50 km/h before giving up the ghost at 55 km/h. Michelin lasted up to 55 km/h without herniation, after which a small cut occurred without damage to the cord. During the first drive on the heaviest tire, the Yokohama iG55, at 40 km/h, the car’s lower suspension arm could not withstand it. Effort to pull out a stud The effectiveness of a studded tire directly depends on the number of studs. Over time, they fall out and grip decreases. The higher the force to pull out the stud, the better it fits in the tire. The testers armed themselves with a dynamometer and pliers and began to tear out “nails”: an average of 6 pieces from different places on the tread. Result: After a couple of studs were torn out, Bridgestone took a break - an exhausting task. But the “nails” Gislaved and Nokian jumped out of their places easily. Conclusion

Hakkapeliita 9 got rid of the shortcomings of the G8: weak grip on dry and wet asphalt. This is probably the first Hakkapeliitta that can be recommended for an urban environment. Most of the questions are about the noise and weak fixation of the studs, which do not have an adhesive base, like the Continental IceContact 2. But a pleasant bonus is the perpetual extended guarantee for through penetration. Good grip on dry and wet asphalt is accompanied by the obsessive noise of the studs. In a budget car like the Lada Vesta, driving on asphalt is uncomfortable. On the other hand, Ice Zero is not afraid of Russian roads - the sidewall is very strong. Pirelli has an extended break-through warranty for one year from the date of purchase. A universal tire (noise aside) for city and country roads. Strengths: safe handling on slippery and asphalt surfaces, durable sidewall, good cleat retention. Weaknesses: noisy. 3rd place Nokian Nordman 7 It is interesting that the Nordman 7 has not lost the drive that the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 and 9 already lack - the car on the “seven” turns over when releasing the gas and behaves more playfully. Although for an inexperienced driver this is rather a disadvantage. Nordman 7 has the same advantages as Hakkapeliita 7 - excellent off-road capabilities, good behavior on snow and ice. But on wet asphalt you need to be careful. The tire suffered a breakdown already at 50 km/h. A discount of half the cost of a tire under an extended warranty (within a year from the date of purchase) is weak compensation for an unreliable sidewall. For a person who often twists the steering wheel in winter, not understanding what angle to turn the wheels. An ordinary driver will think that he is being taken for a simpleton: on a straight line, the car simply does not react to a slight deviation of the steering wheel. In those corners where on most tires you had to turn the steering wheel a quarter, on the Michelin you have to turn it 180 degrees. You often have to change the steering wheel. And if a skid does happen, it would be nice to have emergency preparedness to deal with them. Performance on snow is not bad. Despite the small number of studs - 94, the tire performed well on ice thanks to the large protrusion of the “nails” (1.26 mm upon purchase and 1.65 after measurements were completed). The extended warranty is valid only when purchased at specialized tire centers for a year; replacement and repairs are also only available there. Strengths: comfort when driving over uneven surfaces, good digital performance on all types of surfaces. Weaknesses: the sidewall is weak for penetration, weak cleat fixation, large steering angles for maneuvers; in case of skidding, you need to turn the steering wheel quickly and a lot. 5th place Gislaved Nord Frost 200 The asymmetric tread pattern of the Nord Frost 200 is the same as that of the Continental ContiIceContact HD (BD). The problems remained the same: greater sensitivity to ruts, sudden slippage. During the “Skid Resistance” exercise, the Lada Vesta turned the fastest on the Gislaved. Nord Frost 200 is a relatively quiet tire among studded tires, with good grip on wet asphalt. Suitable for asphalt life in a city with a population of over a million. The worst time on an ice track, one of the worst on an ice circle, where the speed was limited by the car's electronics (ESP). This may be due to the sidewall being too hard (for winter tyres). But it doesn’t feel so bad; the car responds well to turning the steering wheel. The most important thing is to maneuver smoothly, secondary vibration can easily send the car into a ditch, as can a sharp release of the gas in a turn, which will lead to an instant turn. On the other hand, the Bridgestone Blizzak SP-02 has good cleat retention and a strong sidewall that is resistant to punctures. Stabilization system (ESP) is recommended when purchasing this kit. Bridgestone has an extended cut-through warranty for one year from the date of purchase, but only at authorized centers. Strengths: good tenon fixation, strong sidewall. Weaknesses: general poor grip on slippery surfaces (ice and snow), requires stable counter-emergency skills on any surface, noise. 7th place Hankook Winter i'Pike RS Hankook in the two most popular dimensions for comparative tests 205/55 R16 and 215/65 R16 releases the i'Pike RS+ version with an increased number of studs. And in all the others, including this test, 185/65R15, with the usual 110 studs. And the regular i'Pike RS model (without the plus) gave average results. Even Hankook’s extended punch-through warranty is valid for a year only from a 16-inch bore diameter, and therefore Vesta with the R15 was left without insurance. On ice and snow, i'Pike RS tires frighten with prolonged slides, which the driver must long and persistently extinguish. When braking on slippery surfaces, the tire rolls further than most tires. Low performance on slippery surfaces is not least due to the high tread hardness (58 Shore units) versus 50-54 for competitors. On asphalt the behavior is a little better; the tire rolls quietly and has an average smooth ride. The stabilization system (ESP) is recommended when purchasing this Korean model. Strengths: quiet, moderate ride. Weaknesses: prolonged slides on slippery surfaces, weak grip on ice, average grip on snow. 8th place Yokohama iceGuard Stud iG55 There seem to be no spikes - the protrusion from the factory is only 0.6 mm!
