Exclamation mark on the dashboard of a Niva Chevrolet

Hi all! Today I want to raise a rather current topic that, judging by the questions on the forums and the number of requests in search engines, worries a large number of people. I want to talk about a phenomenon where when you press the brake pedal, an exclamation mark on the dashboard lights up.

I will try to give a comprehensive answer to this question and explain why this happens and what kind of damage may be involved. Go!

Let me start, perhaps, with the fact that if a lamp (!) lights up on the panel, it means something is wrong with the brake system. As a rule, this indicator signals a low level of brake fluid (BF) in the system. As you can imagine, faulty brakes are no joke and the problem needs to be addressed. I’ll say more, if anyone doesn’t know, OPERATING A CAR WITH A BURNING INDICATOR (!) IS PROHIBITED! Since you don’t know what’s wrong and what caused this error to appear on the dashboard.

What to do if the lamp comes on?

  1. The first thing you need to do is check the fuel fluid level. This is done simply and without any difficulties. Open the hood and look at the level, it should be between o and “MAX”. The level must be monitored constantly; for those who forget to do this, there is an exclamation mark. It lights up based on a signal from the sensor, which signals when the fuel level is below the permissible level.

By the way! There are often cases when the light comes on when driving over uneven surfaces and goes out as soon as the car drives onto a more or less level road. This happens precisely for the reason that the level of “brake fluid” is close to o and when the car is rocking, the sensor detects a low level and signals this to the instrument panel.

  1. If everything is in order with the brake fluid level, you need to check the fuel injection system, which is located in the brake fluid tank. I'll tell you how to do this now.

2.1. Turn on the ignition and make sure that the exclamation mark lamp comes on, that is, the indicator of insufficient fuel level. It should light up and go out if the level is normal and the sensor is working.

2.2. We turn off the power from the sensor and look at the lamp; if it goes out, most likely there is a problem with the sensor. Check the sensor, sometimes the problem is that the float fails and sinks to the bottom even though the fuel fluid level is fine.

Information icons

The machine icon may light up differently; it happens that the “car with a wrench” icon, the “car with a lock” icon, or an exclamation mark are lit. About all these notations in order:

When such an indicator lights up ( a car with a key ), it informs about malfunctions in the engine (often a malfunction of a sensor) or the electronic part of the transmission. To find out the exact cause, you will need to perform diagnostics.

A red car with a lock lights up , which means that problems have arisen in the operation of the standard anti-theft system and it will be impossible to start the car, but if this icon blinks when the car is locked, then everything is normal - the car is locked.

Try turning the starter by closing the contacts on it with a screwdriver. [video] Measure the voltage on the battery, maybe it's dead...

The battery is fine, I'll try to close it now. The immobilizer cannot be modified?

With the immobilizer active (mine is activated), the starter turns, but does not engage the engine, since there is no connection with the ECU. So it's not about him. If it starts with a screwdriver, I think it’s worth digging towards the ignition switch and the wiring from it..

Or maybe the starter is frozen? Damn, what's the matter?((

And how can you understand why the “(!)” icon on the right side of the dashboard lights up when you turn the key to the starter position? Then when you release the key, does this icon go out? What the hell is this?

In general, as far as I know, it should light up when you turn the key to “Start”. Read here.. similar topic: autolada.ru/viewtopic.php?t=293907&start=25

Re: Resolved: The starter does not turn, an exclamation mark just lights up on the panel

Clean the mass that goes from the battery to the engine (a thick harness, but it’s better to clean everything) and clean (check) the positive contacts on the starter. I had such crap - the mass was to blame.

How to remove the tidy

Follow the simple procedure.

Reassembling the unit is performed in reverse order.

The standard Shnivy panel is a well-thought-out module with informative and easy-to-read information. The simple design ensures the reliability of the unit and the absence of serious breakdowns during operation.

Specialization : Graduated from the State Automobile University, worked for 20 years at GAZ-56, now I drive a Zhiguli.

Description and location of indicators and instruments on the panel

The instrument cluster includes many elements.

In accordance with the diagram above, the shield structure is as follows:

  1. The coolant temperature control sensor, the arrow on it rises as the engine warms up. The controller needle should not be allowed to move into the red zone, as this will indicate overheating of the power unit.
  2. A tachometer is a device that measures the number of revolutions of the engine crankshaft.
  3. The left turn signal activation symbol, made in the form of a green arrow, appears when the corresponding indicator on the steering column switch is turned on. If the light blinks faster than usual, this may indicate a burnt out bulb.
  4. Right turn signal.
  5. Speedometer, this device allows the driver to know how fast the vehicle is moving. The speedometer is connected to the transfer case via an electric drive.
  6. Gasoline fuel level controller; the Chevy Niva uses an electromagnetic device that functions only when the ignition is activated. When the ignition is turned off, the controller needle moves down the scale.
  7. The fuel reserve indicator in the gas tank appears on the dashboard when the fuel level in the system is about 4-6.5 liters.
  8. The side light activation lamp appears on the dashboard when the corresponding optics are turned on.
  9. The brake system emergency symbol appears if the brake fluid level in the expansion tank has dropped to a critical level.
  10. High beam indicator.
  11. A key that allows you to reset the daily mileage readings. You can also use this button to switch to the clock or outside temperature sensor.
  12. A screen that displays the total and daily mileage of the vehicle.
  13. The Check Engine indicator indicates the need for engine diagnostics. It should always appear when the ignition is turned on, and disappear after starting the engine. If this light remains on while driving, the engine management system needs to be checked.
  14. Light alarm activation lamp.
  15. Symbol of time and temperature; you can switch from one mode to another using button 11.
  16. Battery low indicator, this light should always appear when the ignition is turned on and disappear after the engine is started. If the indicator is always on, this indicates that there is no charging current in the on-board network. This may be due to a failure of the voltage regulator or generator unit, or the lamp may light up if the tension of the generator strap is insufficient or breaks.
  17. Handbrake activation symbol. If your Niva Chevy is on the handbrake, the indicator will light up when you turn on the ignition and start the engine.
  18. Indicator of emergency low pressure of engine fluid. It should always appear when the ignition is activated. If it lights up after turning on the engine, this indicates low pressure in the system or a lack of engine fluid.
  19. Reserve indicator (video author - Artem S).

Let's bring Shniva to mind: Our own icons in the BKL (Indicator lamp block)

I decided to add functionality to the ShNivovsky BKL, especially since it still does not use all the potential inherent in it. Attention! If you have a FAM or ReSHN with ABS+SRS, then the BCL is full-fledged, all indicators are wired. If you have a ReShN in the basic configuration (without ABS), then you do not have a BCL, instead there is a plug. Therefore, you will have to buy it separately if you want to make your own badges) If you have a pre-restyle, then the BKL has a short board and only the first 3 badges are soldered. You can read about how to make such a BCL full-fledged here

Possible faults

If you understand the designations of the light bulbs in the Niva Chevrolet instrument panel, let's look at the next point - possible malfunctions of the device:

  1. The instrument cluster does not work, but the engine starts normally. Most likely, the problem is caused by either a failure of the shield itself or a lack of power.
  2. The lights on the instrument cluster do not light up. If all the indicators stop working at once, this may indicate a break or fraying of the wire responsible for the lighting. If only some of the lamps do not work, then most likely they are simply burnt out.
  3. Devices not working - speedometer or tachometer. Most likely this is an electrical type problem; you need to disassemble the panel and look for the fault.
  4. Sensors do not work - fuel level, antifreeze temperature. As practice shows, this usually indicates poor contact in the electrical circuit. Usually this problem is solved by disconnecting and cleaning the plug contacts (the author of the video is the Ig K channel).

DIY diagnostics

In accordance with the service manual for the car, the control panel has its own diagnostic system, which allows you to check the device without removing it.

The sequence of actions for diagnosis is as follows:

  1. The ignition must be turned off and the daily mileage reset button must be pressed. Next, the ignition is turned on and the key is released. The arrows on the tidy devices must pass through the entire scale several times - this is a tidy test.
  2. Then hold down the reset button for five seconds - this will clear the processor memory.
  3. Now press the odometer reset button; the version of the software used should appear on the display. When you press the button again, numbers should appear on the display. The number 0 indicates that there are no malfunctions in the operation of the device, 1 - the microprocessor has failed, 2 - the fuel controller circuit has broken, 4 or 8 - increased or decreased voltage in the on-board network. If there are several breakdowns, the sum of codes will appear on the screen. For example, 14 is errors 2, 4 and 8, fault 10 is errors 8 and 2, etc.

Drivers are notified of the presence of malfunctions in various vehicle systems using icons on the instrument panel. It is not always possible to decipher the meaning of such burning icons intuitively, since not all car enthusiasts are well versed in cars. In addition, on different cars, the graphic designation of one icon itself may differ. It is worth noting that not every light on the panel only indicates a critical malfunction. The indication of light bulbs under the icons is divided into 3 groups by color:

Red icons indicate danger, and if any symbol lights up in this color, you should pay attention to the signal from the on-board computer in order to take measures to quickly resolve the malfunction. Sometimes they are not so critical, and it is possible to continue driving the car when such an icon on the panel is on, but sometimes it is not worth it.

Basic icons on the dashboard

Yellow indicators warn of a malfunction or the need to take some action to drive the car or service it.

The green lamps of the symbols inform about the vehicle’s service functions and their activity.

Let's present a list of the most frequently asked questions and an explanation of what the burning icon on the panel means.

Tuning options

The choice of options for tuning is not particularly large:

  1. Install a device from another car. In this case, you will need the services of a qualified electrician, since the connectors will have to be redone. You can also install a digital version of the tidy - it will be more than original.
  2. As a tuning option, you can install LED bulbs instead of regular ones. Many car owners choose this option because it is less expensive and the easiest to implement.
  3. Another tuning method is to install original instrument scales on the speedometer, tachometer and other sensors. Moreover, you can buy such scales either ready-made or make them yourself in accordance with your preferences.

Checking the fuel oil level sensor

Checking it is quite simple; to do this, you need to unscrew the brake reservoir cap without disconnecting it from the connector. Then forcefully raise the “float”, then the lamp should go out; if this does not happen, then most likely the problem is in the sensor.

The next step is to check the control circuit. To do this, disconnect the sensor from the connector and insert a jumper into the plug, closing the two contacts together. When closed, the lamp should light up.
