Calculation of fuel consumption using the on-board computer
Due to the constant increase in fuel prices in our country, every motorist eventually thinks about saving fuel. However, in order to reduce consumption, you must first measure it correctly. Fortunately, almost every modern car has an on-board computer. This article will discuss what information about consumption is provided by the on-board computer and what conclusions can be drawn based on these data.

It is clear that different sensors measure differently and may produce different data. Indeed, along with on-board sensors, there are other devices and even systems. For example, a fuel consumption monitoring system using GPS. But most often, fuel consumption is measured in the following 3 quantities:
- Consumption per 100 km. Most often the number of liters per 100 km.
- Fuel consumption over a certain period of time. Most often, the number of liters per 1 hour of work.
- The distance a car will travel on a certain amount of fuel. Most often it is expressed as a certain range for the current level of fuel in the tank and is expressed in km.
Nowadays, on-board computers have learned to determine all these quantities. And this was not done by the developers by chance, because under different conditions different quantities become relevant. For example, when the engine is running and parked, the computer will show consumption per unit of time . After starting to drive, it is logical to give the driver information about the current consumption per 100 km. And by switching the mode, you can find out the distance for which the fuel in the tank is enough.
There are also several types of expenses: current (for a fairly short period of time), average (for a significant period of time, for example, for a trip) and operating fuel consumption (for a longer period of time, for example, for a run of 10,000 km). These three indicators can differ greatly for a number of reasons.
So, why do the fuel consumption readings on the on-board computer differ ? Fuel consumption greatly depends on the driver’s driving style, external conditions (such as weather, terrain, etc.), vehicle load and many other factors. All of this undoubtedly makes it difficult to track consumption over time.
Here we come to an important conclusion: it is necessary to compare fuel costs and draw conclusions on certain methods of saving it under the same conditions (in practice, at least to achieve equality of the above factors).

Check the fuel tank cap. Indicates to the driver that a new message has appeared on the instrument panel display or another indicator has turned on. It can remind you to perform some service functions or report other problems. Informs the driver to refer to the vehicle's owner's manual to decipher the message on the instrument panel display. The coolant level in the engine cooling system is low. Electronic throttle valve ETC malfunction.
The Blind Spot - BSM tracking system for areas invisible to the driver around the car is faulty or disabled. The first light in some vehicles may indicate more serious problems. The air filter of the engine intake system is dirty and needs to be replaced. Since it is connected to the fuel supply and brake systems, malfunctions in these systems can cause it to shut down.
This indicator reports problems in one of them.
The Stability Control system is deactivated. It also turns off automatically when the Check Engine light is on.
Depending on the manufacturer, the stabilization system can be called differently: Having detected wheel slip, it uses brake systems, fuel supply and suspension control to level the position of the car on the road. All-wheel drive is engaged or the system needs diagnostics. The Intelligent Brake Assist (IBA) system, which is capable of independently applying the brake system when an obstacle is detected dangerously close to the car to prevent a collision, is disabled.
If the system is not turned off and the indicator is on, the system’s laser sensors may be faulty or dirty. All information from the sensors flows into the car’s on-board computer.

In the event of any error, breakdown, or the need to communicate important information to the driver, automakers have provided a large number of symbols and inscriptions on the dashboard that light up under certain conditions. Unfortunately, the wide variety of symbols on the dashboard confuses many drivers and sometimes even scares them.
We have collected for you more signal icons that are found in more than cars. The review includes 30 car brands. It is possible to enable the following functions: Periodically check the headlight washers to ensure that the fluid is accurately applied to the headlight lenses.
If the windshield wiper blades are stuck, stop the vehicle in a safe place, turn off the ignition, and clear the windshield to ensure that the windshield wipers operate smoothly. Do not operate the windshield wiper when the glass is dry, as this may cause scratches on the glass or premature wear of the blades. Before turning on the windshield wipers in cold weather, check to see if the blades are frozen to the glass.
If you turn on the windshield wiper with the blades frozen to the glass, the electric motor may fail. Try not to turn on the washer for a long time longer than 20 seconds. Do not turn on the washer if the washer fluid reservoir is empty. Otherwise, the electric motor may fail.
Attention!!! Dashboard warning lights!
Periodically check the fluid level in the washer reservoir and add if necessary. In cold weather, fill the tank with a special antifreeze liquid. Failure to comply with this requirement may result in washer failure, as well as damage to system parts due to freezing of the liquid. Rear window heating switch The rear window heating can only be switched on when the engine is running.
To turn on the heating, press the button. After approximately 20 minutes the heating will automatically switch off. To turn off the heating earlier, press the button again.
When the rear window heating is turned on, the indicator located on the switch button lights up. Note When the rear window heating is turned on, the outside rear view mirrors begin to heat up and are cleared of condensation or ice.
After turning on the heater, the rear window will heat up, after which you can turn on the windshield wiper. The heated rear window is intended only to remove condensation and not to melt snow on the glass. Before turning on the heating, remove snow from the glass
To clean the inside of the rear window, use a soft cloth, gently running it along the heater wires.

We need readings from the on-board computer of the VAZ 2111 engine. So, for example, the computer receives data on the width of the fuel pulse in the injector, injection volume and data from the speed sensor, from the crankshaft rotation sensor, from the gearbox sensor, etc. This happens due to the fact that the on-board computer of the VAZ 2114 connects to the electronic control unit via a special diagnostic communication line K-line, which, using coded signals, reports fuel consumption and the operation of its supply system, heat consumption, rpm and other important data. |
What is the real gasoline consumption of VA3 2114? • For me, the cause is often suppositories; I always forget about them.
Car diagnostics
In such a situation, you can buy a scanner for personal use, but its cost and the need to study the features of the software make this method impractical, especially when it comes to diagnosing only one car. The simplest ones display information about the outside temperature, driving speed, current and average fuel consumption, the distance that can be driven with the fuel remaining in the tank and some other data.
High fuel consumption in 2114: causes and solutions
According to the passport, Samara-2 should consume 7.6 liters per 100 km in mixed mode, in the city - no more than 9 liters.
If your readings are as high as mine, then it's time to address the increased fuel consumption. The first thing that comes to mind is related to engine malfunctions, the chassis of the car, or the operation of the electronic engine control system. We have discussed in other materials what exactly could cause consumption to increase. In these cases, you need to take your vehicle to a specialized service station or climb into the pit of the garage yourself to get to the bottom of the reasons. But what to do if no visible faults could be detected, and the bookmaker still gives us not very reassuring data?
Computer readings can and should be trusted, but always with a certain correction. The fact is that it demonstrates the average consumption of gasoline or diesel fuel. This value directly depends on the mode in which you had to move during the last time interval. Let's explain with an example: let's say you had to drive about 500 km on the highway, and then 50 km in city mode. You cannot completely trust the consumption indicator, because the time spent in the countryside is 10 times greater than the distance traveled in the city.
A very high rate of fuel consumption is usually associated precisely with the time when we have to move in city traffic jams at a minimum speed. To do this, it is enough to estimate the average speed of movement and, if it is within 20–30 km/h, then it is not difficult to guess why the BC gives such readings.

Tell me who has multitronics. To see the gas consumption, you definitely need to look at the connector. Should I connect an additional wire to the fuel sensor?

Thank you. but I didn't quite understand. When I fill it up, then I enter how many liters into it, and then it counts itself. Or does it immediately read from the main connector without additional actions?

No, not necessarily. But if you don’t connect to the sensor, there are subtleties. You need to refuel either until the tank is full, or after refueling, enter the amount of gasoline filled. The flow rate itself needs to be calibrated. After calibration, my reading accuracy is approximately +-0.5 liters from fill to fill (

If you connect it to the FLS, you need to invert the FLS readings. Because on neon it shows negative. If it's full, it will say it's empty, and the tank will be replenished as you drive.

It's confusing , you press the tiny button on the top left and there the readings are based on the last trip. Average consumption. Average speed, mileage, trip time. it’s as easy as shelling pears to get dirty just like that

It's confusing , the instructions clearly say how to calibrate the tank, at 2 and 7 points, while at the SOURCES - the fuel tank ECU.
after calibration everything shows as it should, before calibration it shows the opposite as 1n1tr0 ,

Setting an alarm
When a car suddenly begins to consume several liters more fuel, the driver is forced to go to the gas station more often or reduce the duration of his trips in order to keep the budget in the desired mode. This is precisely the main role of the BC on-board computer to monitor the operation of the main systems in the car and promptly provide the necessary information to the driver.

Very low fuel consumption in a car most likely indicates a deception by the manufacturer. We switch to the thorification mode by holding down the button with the image of the car for a second, about which the on-board computer on the VAZ 2112 will notify us with a short sound signal. The video above explains in clear language how you can launch the so-called Kalina instrument cluster testing mode, as well as look at the current errors of the on-board computer that are stored in memory. |
High fuel consumption - what to do? | auto Noob There are countless different models, the potential of which may well be expanded and updated with the improvement of the firmware supplied with them. And in order to trust the readings of your BC more, first simply disconnect the negative terminal on the battery, thus achieving zero power supply for all electrical appliances. |

In order to install something restyled on a pre-restyling VAZ-2170, the car will have to be modernized so that the transmission of information to the on-board vehicle device is accurate. We brake with the engine, the rpm is 2000, the air consumption is X but not zero, the fuel consumption is zero, the rpm drops to 1800-1500, the air consumption is the same or slightly less, but the fuel consumption has already gone down.

The standard on-board computer of the dozen, also known as the route BC, is a special electronic device that serves as the main expert in assessing the correct operation of the car’s electronics. The check may light up depending on the type of car; in one it may appear only when serious errors occur; this may be a problem with detonation of the engine sensor, or an error in the functioning of the air pressure control valve.

Why does the on-board computer show high fuel consumption - Auto-master For any injection engine of the VAZ-2114 level of complexity, there are a number of quite simple reasons why a car may show excessive fuel consumption. This means that you need to make as few sharp accelerations and subsequent braking as possible, which greatly adjust the fuel consumption rate. |
Answer: On-board computer and HBO • Specialist Country Russian Federation.
Fuel quality - change the gas station
Another option for what to do if your consumption is high is to change several gas stations and test the consumption on different types of fuel. We often get used to the services of one gas station because of its convenient location or low fuel prices. In fact, it’s worth starting to look for the reasons for the increase in consumption right here. Often, low-quality fuel adds about 20 percent to existing consumption. The following symptoms are observed:
- the engine does not hold speed at idle;
- there is always a slight tremor in the cabin;
- when you try to accelerate sharply and when you vigorously press the gas pedal, the engine fails;
- acceleration does not correspond to the potential of the power unit and the technical data of the car.
If you notice these symptoms, you can no longer wonder why your fuel consumption has increased. You just need to change the gas station and find a reputable company to buy fuel for yourself. Low-quality gasoline or diesel fuel can cause your car to have more serious problems than very high fuel consumption.
Connecting the K-line of the BC "State XD" to the on-board network - Alternative factors
Trip computer VAZ 2114 operating instructions: what faults does the on-board computer show? Before buying and connecting a new multifunctional device for reading and displaying important vehicle parameters, you should decide on the type of on-board computer that suits you. Therefore, they can be used to connect to simple injection and carburetor engines, as well as to more modern, complex power units, including turbocharged engines. |
How the on-board computer affects engine operation If the electronics give values that seem implausible or, due to a breakdown, simply do not show them, there is an old and time-tested other way to measure fuel consumption. This is a fairly large number, but there are also less significant factors: wear of wheel bearings, rubbing of brake pads in some modes, and incorrect wheel alignment angles of the front wheels. |
- clogging and inability to burn all the fuel;
- large diameters of holes in the jets;
- improper carburetor repair;
- mechanical damage and fuel leakage.
