In domestic cars Lada Priora and Lada Kalina, the air flow sensor is a hot-wire type sensor with frequency signaling (Hz). It is used to meter the air supply into the intake manifold. The signals are transmitted to the ECU as the volume of air that is supplied to form the fuel-air mixture. Incorrect data leading to loss of power and increased consumption may occur due to contamination or sensor failure. We propose to consider which mass air flow sensors are installed on Priora and Kalina, what signs can be used to identify problems, how to clean and replace them.
Principle of operation
The piston stroke occurs when fuel is burned with air in a ratio of 1:14, maintaining which ensures optimal operation of the power plant. When the proportion decreases or increases, the engine does not stop working, but there is excessive fuel consumption or a decrease in engine operating power.
We need a mass air flow sensor so that air flows in portions. The operation of the unit proceeds as follows: the VAZ 2110 air flow sensor calculates the portion of fresh air, and then sends the data to the main computer, which, based on this information, calculates the portion of fuel.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ghzz6V5Ht3k
The harder you push the gas, the more filtered air the powerplant requires. The mass flow sensor detects the increase and commands the electronics to increase the amount of fuel. When moving at the same speed, each portion should be equal to the previous one.
The mass air flow sensor receives data on the load of the power unit, and then calculates the required portion of air. When the driver presses the pedal, the throttle valve opens, thereby increasing the volume of intake air - the load increases. When the pedal is released, the load drops.
How does the mass air flow sensor work?
The mass air flow sensor has a small wire that is electrically heated (thermal resistance). A temperature sensor is installed next to the measuring element, which measures the air temperature near the thermal resistance.
When the engine is idling, a small amount of air passes through the sensing element, so a very low electrical current is required to maintain the temperature of the RTD.
When you step on the gas, the throttle opens, allowing more air to pass through the sensing element. The passing air cools the thermal resistance.
The more air that passes through the wire, the more electrical current is needed to keep it hot. The amount of current is proportional to the air flow.
A small electronic chip installed inside the mass air flow sensor converts the electrical current into a digital signal and sends it to the engine control unit (ECU).
The controller uses the airflow signal to calculate the amount of fuel to inject. The goal is to keep the air/fuel ratio at an optimal level.
In addition, the ECU uses air flow readings to determine automatic transmission shift timing. If the mass air flow sensor is not working properly, the automatic transmission may also shift differently.
Overview and characteristics of the mass air flow sensor
The sensor is connected to the electrical harness and is located in the intake tract. The signal from the mass air flow sensor is a direct current, which has its own voltage. The magnitude of the current depends on the movement of air in the Priora that has passed through the sensor. The Priora mass air flow sensor includes:
- a ring located inside the sensor, it is designed to fix the filter;
- the filter itself, located in the mass air flow sensor;
- inlet flange;
- different thermoelements;
- electronic board;
- contact connector;
- outlet flange.
3 thermocouples were installed inside the sensor. The first determines the temperature in the environment. Heating the air to the desired specific temperature is assigned to the next two thermoelements.
During the measurement of electrical power, the determination of the consumed air begins to occur. Electric power maintains the temperature at the desired level.
The filter that is installed in the Priora mass air flow sensor prevents large particles from entering the sensor housing. If this happens, the thermocouples may fail. It also has the function of cutting air to ensure even distribution of air. The filter is fixed with a ring intended for it in the inlet flange.
There is one rubber ring on each side of the housing for sealing. This is done to prevent air from being sucked in. Great importance should be paid to the seal ring located between the housing and the outlet flange located in the sensor.
If air begins to be sucked in, the system will not be able to take this into account, as a result of which the fuel mixture will become leaner. In this case, it is impossible to ensure maximum engine performance. It will be difficult to know that this is the problem with poor sensor performance. This will be difficult to do even with measuring instruments.
If foreign particles get into the mass flow sensor housing, it may fail. The MAF is a precise measuring device and, as has already been proven, does not tolerate anything hitting its body. The sensor on the car can be wire or film.
The mass air flow sensor on Priora is of the film type. The film is placed on a ceramic base. It contains both measuring and compensation resistors. These resistors are located inside the film. With this design, the sensor looks more reliable.
The film performs only the measuring elements. The substrate, in turn, functions as the strength elements of the structure. But such a sensor also has its drawbacks. Such sensors have a mechanical contact between the resistance track and the tire made of metal, resulting in wear.

Cleaning the air flow sensor
If the sensor is dirty, you can try cleaning it. Cleaning the MAF sensor is a delicate procedure and can be used as a temporary solution. Sometimes this can help.
What not to do
Do not blow the sensor with air from the compressor. You can break the conductors from the crystal to the board. They are very thin (approx. 0.01mm) and soft. They are fixed with a gel-like compound, which is dissolved by light solvents and deformed by a strong air flow. That is, by blowing with a compressor, you can blow off the compound and tear off the conductors.
Ketones and ethers should not be used for washing. For three reasons:
- Dissolve the compound.
- When drying, the crystal is cooled very strongly. It may burst or crack.
- Dissolve the “mask” on the crystal.
Using a MAF cleaner
To wash the mass air flow sensor, it is better to use a special aerosol MAF cleaner, for example, LIQUI MOLY (art. 8044) or KERRY (art. KR9091).
To do this, you need to remove the sensor, unscrew the measuring element if possible and spray cleaner on it. Depending on the contamination, repeat the procedure several times. Let dry.
Basic faults
The mass air flow sensor rarely fails, but if this happens, it will not be difficult to determine the malfunction. To do this, know the main signs with which you can check the condition:
- Excessive consumption of fuel. We learn about this from the on-board computer indicators. If a malfunction occurs, consumption may increase by 1 liter or more.
- Decrease in dynamics. The engine does not produce the power that yesterday was not a difficult task for the VAZ 2110.
- Interruptions in the operation of the power plant. Slow acceleration or too fast.
- The engine does not start or does not start the first time.
- Floating speed. This concept means that a spontaneous increase or decrease in speed occurs.
Having studied these signs, you might think that they are common. To be sure that the mass air flow sensor is broken or absent, we need to check the sensor. Diagnosis can be performed in several ways.
Signs of a malfunction of the mass air flow sensor on Priora and Kalina
The first and main sign of a flow meter failure is increased gasoline consumption. When the sensor stops working normally, the engine on Priora and Kalina begins to consume a minimum of 13 liters, a maximum of 16-18 l/100 km. This may also be accompanied by either unstable idle speed or consistently high speed. The third sign is a sharp drop in power when driving, the car begins to “kick” or accelerate slowly.
Indirect signs of DMRV malfunctions:
- increased CO2 levels;
- gray exhaust, black velvet carbon deposits on all spark plugs;
- If you suddenly release the gas pedal while driving, the engine will stall.
Determining the malfunction of the mass air flow sensor
There are various breakdowns in the Priora mass air flow sensor. To understand that the mass air flow sensor is faulty, you need to check it using the Check Engine lamp, or a multitester designed for testing. If you are shown error codes 34 or 33, then the mass air flow sensor has a malfunction. This means you need to check the motor.
If you notice poor acceleration dynamics, the car begins to brake sharply and accelerate sharply, then this also serves as a signal that your sensor is broken. Interruptions in engine operation and jumps in speed also indicate this. If the car stops the engine when changing gears, then you should check the sensor.
The engine crankcase ventilation system has its own characteristics. It has two circuits installed. The first one is large, it starts working when the throttle valve is open. The second is small, works in idle mode, when the throttle is closed.
And some of them touch the film resistor of the mass flow sensor. The deposited resins begin to change the characteristics of this resistor, so the sensor begins to fake. In this regard, the idle speed controller also begins to malfunction, this affects the engine starting.
Symptoms of a problem
The mass air flow sensor is located in the air duct near the air filter. It is designed to determine the amount of incoming air. Depending on its readings, the control unit will show how much fuel is needed to form a high-quality fuel mixture. The normal ratio is 1:14. Therefore, the quality of the fuel-air mixture depends on the correct readings of the flow meter.
The high-quality operation of the mass air flow sensor depends largely on the cleanliness of the air filter. Therefore, if symptoms of a malfunction of the mass air flow sensor appear, you should first check the air filter before making repairs. The flow meter is usually beyond repair. If it is faulty, it is replaced with a new device. But its cost is quite high, so you should first make sure that the causes of the problems are in the sensor and not in other malfunctions of the machine.
The signal for diagnosis is the following symptoms of a malfunction of the mass air flow sensor:
There are other symptoms of a “dying” sensor. For example, it may have cracks in the corrugated hose that connects the throttle body to the sensor. If the engine stalls, there may be a power problem or damaged wiring. This is a signal to check the electrical wiring. If malfunctions are detected, the machine's electrical system must be repaired.
In addition to the above possible signs of failure of the mass air flow sensor, you should diagnose the sensor signal level.
A low signal level may mean the following:
- Mass air flow sensor is not connected;
You should not draw conclusions about a malfunction of the mass air flow sensor, relying only on the symptoms listed above. A complete diagnosis of the engine and machine should be carried out, since signs of a flow meter failure may appear if other devices malfunction (for example, due to a clogged air filter). Then you need to repair these devices to restore the car's functionality.
DMRV error code
The following errors may indicate a malfunction in the operation of the mass air flow sensor:
- P0100 - damage to the electrical circuit connecting the sensor. To eliminate the breakdown, you need to check the wiring for integrity, since accidental disconnection of the connector or damage to the electrical contacts is possible.
- P0102 - the vehicle control unit began to receive a low signal, which was recorded at the input of the mass air flow sensor power line. To eliminate the cause of the breakdown, it is necessary to check the electrical wiring and the insulating layer of the cable; oxidation of the contacts of the wiring connector (the so-called chips) is possible.
- P0103 - critically high signal detected at the input of the mass air flow sensor power line. If the cause of the malfunction is not the wiring, then a visual inspection and cleaning of the flow meter will be required or it will have to be replaced with a new one.
Testing and diagnostic methods
Shutdown
This method involves starting the motor with the sensor removed - we need to disconnect its connector. When turned off, the controller starts emergency mode, and new portions of the mixture are calculated based on the position of the damper. We need to drive a little, the speed should be above 1500 rpm. If the car behaves more dynamically without a mass air flow sensor, then the diagnosis is complete - it’s time to change the consumable.
Checking with a multimeter
This test requires that you have skills in using a multimeter (tester). The method is suitable for almost all VAZ models, including 2110. We need to take a multimeter and set it to a mode that measures constant voltage, which is usually designated DCV or only V. To work with the mass air flow sensor, you need to understand its pinout, it is as follows:
- Yellow, closest to the windshield, supplies current to the signal input;
- Green indicates ground;
- The pink or red-black wire comes from the main relay;
- The white-gray wire is responsible for the voltage output.
Depending on the model, the colors may be different, but the location does not change. Here you will have to deal with a specific model. But once you find the input signal wiring (closer to the windshield) and grounding, you can do it without instructions. The wiring is clear, now you need to turn on the ignition without starting the engine.
The tester sets a limit of 2 Volts. The black probe of the tester is connected to the green ground wire of the air flow sensor, and the red one is connected to the yellow one. The measurement takes place between two terminals. The probes must be inserted carefully; an additional needle is not required, since the probes can be freely inserted along the wires without damaging the insulation.
DETAILS: Honda Accord 8 - list of routine maintenance 1 2 3 4 and maintenance details
We look at the tester display. If the consumable is new, then there we will see a voltage indicator of 1.01. Over time, the indicator increases as the resistors wear out (the resistance drops). The larger the number, the greater the wear of the sensitive element:
- In good condition, the indicator will be 1.01… 1.02;
- With “normal” - 1.02... 1.03;
- The sensor will soon stop working – 1.03… 1.04;
- The dying state of the flow meter is accompanied by an indicator of 1.04… 1.05;
- Replacement of the unit is required when the reading is 1.05 or higher.
Diagnostics can also be carried out without a multimeter. Instead, you can use the on-board computer. To do this, you need to go to the “voltage from the mass flow sensor” section; we are interested in the “U MAF” indicator.
Visual inspection
Here we need to carefully examine the surface of the corrugation and consumables. To check the condition, we need to loosen the air intake clamp at the outlet of the mass air flow sensor, and then pull it off. If you see traces of grease or condensation on the surface, then most likely they have damaged the unit.
Sometimes the sensor can be “reanimated” by removing all the dirt. It ends up in the consumables due to rare changes of the air filter. If liquid appears on the sensitive element, this is a 90% failure. Lubricating oil enters due to a clogged oil separator or due to an increased level in the crankcase.
If the above-described elements are detected, the diagnosis can be completed. If the surface is clean, move on. Remove the consumable from the air filter. It is held in place only by 2 screws, which are unscrewed with the 10th key. Looking at the photo, we see that there is an o-ring on the front of the mass flow sensor. It is installed for sealing - unfiltered air cannot leak through the inlet.
If this ring (in the photo it is green, but your color may be different) has slipped or remains in the filter housing, then a layer of dust can be found on the consumable mesh. Such a defect is enough to cause the sensitive element to fail. You need to assemble the unit according to the following scheme: check the reliability of the sealing skirt, put on the rubber ring, place the sensor in the air filter housing.
During diagnostics, first of all, the clamp holding the air supply pipe to the mass flow sensor is loosened. You will need a Phillips screwdriver here. The corrugation itself must also be inspected. Its inner surface must be clean and dry. The presence of traces of dampness or condensation indicates a failure of the air filter. Its malfunction usually leads to rapid failure of the mass air flow sensor.

Hi all! My name is Mikhail, now I’ll tell you a story about how I managed to exchange my two-wheeler for a 2010 Camry. It all started with the fact that I began to be wildly irritated by the breakdowns of the two-wheeler, it seemed like nothing serious was broken, but damn it, there were so many little things that really started to irritate me. This is where the idea arose that it was time to change the car to a foreign car. The choice fell on the melting Camry of the tenth years.
Yes, I had matured morally, but financially I just couldn’t handle it. I’ll say right away that I am against loans and taking a car, especially not a new one, on credit is unreasonable. My salary is 24k a month, so collecting 600-700 thousand is almost impossible for me. I started looking for different ways to make money on the Internet. You can’t imagine how many scams there are, what I haven’t tried: sports betting, network marketing, and even the volcano casino, where I successfully lost about 10 thousand ((The only direction in which it seemed to me that I could make money was currency trading on the stock exchange, they call it Forex. But when I started delving into it, I realized that it was very difficult for me. I continued to dig further and came across binary options. The essence is the same as in Forex, but it’s much easier to understand. I started reading forums, studying trading strategies. I tried it on a demo account, then opened a real account. To be honest, I didn’t manage to start earning money right away, until I understood all the mechanics of options, I lost about 3,000 rubles, but as it turned out, it was a precious experience. Now I earn 5-7 thousand rubles a day. I managed to get the car buy after half a year, but in my opinion this is a good result, and it’s not about the car, my life has changed, I naturally quit my job, I have more free time for myself and my family. Let's try to go for a ride. If the car feels “faster”, then we can say that the mass air flow sensor is not working.
By the way, for ECU Y7.2, M7.9.7. The speed does not increase when the chip is turned off!
Method No. 2: Alternative ECU firmware. If the standard firmware of the controller was replaced with another, then it is unknown what is built into it in case of emergency mode in method No. 1. Try sliding a 1mm thick plate under the damper stop. The revs will rise. Pull out the chip from the mass air flow sensor. If it doesn’t stall, it means the problem is with the firmware, or rather with the IAC steps in emergency mode without a mass air flow sensor.
Method No. 3: Checking the mass air flow sensor with a multimeter. This method works on Bosch sensors with catalog numbers: 0 280 218 004, 0 280 218 037, 0 280 218 116. Turn on the tester in the DC voltage measurement mode, set the measurement limit to 2 Volts. DMRV pinout:
- Yellow (closest to the windshield) - mass air flow sensor signal input;
- Gray-white—sensor supply voltage output;

How to repair a Priora mass air flow sensor?
The MAF costs a lot. According to the laws of the market, there are reasons for this. However, everything is much simpler! We have to pay a high price for the sensor due to our ignorance. Few people imagine how the mass air flow sensor works. Also, few people know why it stops working. Sellers always impose the opinion that if the mass air flow sensor starts to mope, then you definitely need to buy a new one.
The structure of the sensor is simple. But if you cannot find the fault in its malfunction, then it is better to visit a car repair shop. It is difficult to overestimate the role of the sensor. In order for the controller to monitor the uninterrupted operation of the ignition and injectors, it must more accurately know the air flow of the engine.
When repairing a Priora, the mass air flow sensor should be checked with a diagnostic device, the scale of which is up to 2 V. The wire from the device is inserted between the rubber seal and the yellow wire. Do this until the contacts rest. Measure the voltage at this contact point.
To do this, turn the ignition key. The ideal option is 0.99 V. When measuring, inaccuracy is allowed, but not more than 1.03 V. If the readings are higher, someone immediately runs to the store to buy a new sensor. But let's not rush.
Using pliers, unscrew the screws that secure the measuring element to the sensor. It is better to select self-tapping screws for a Phillips screwdriver. It will be easier for you to unscrew them in the future. Now you need to work with the removed element. Prepare washing equipment in advance. This will be an aerosol carburetor cleaner. Bend its tube at an angle of 90˚.
DETAILS: Do-it-yourself removal and disassembly of the Mazda 3Axela dashboard
To do this, heat the tube in the flame of a match. After this, cut it so that the tube itself is straight and the stream is directed to the side. Insert it into the upper valve of the removed element by 10 mm and rinse the resistor. Repeat this procedure after a couple of seconds.
Allow the cleaner to dry. Only then insert the sensor back into the housing. After this, the voltage measurement should be repeated. If during the measurement everything remained the same, then the mass air flow sensor on the Priora really did its job.
After flushing the sensor, some engine characteristics may change. In this case, it is worth checking the exhaust toxicity and adjusting it if necessary. If, during the check, the measurements returned to normal, then you can safely continue driving.
Not everyone wants to go to a service center and check the sensor to see if it is working properly, but some will simply feel sorry for the money. How can you find out for yourself whether the sensor is working or not without a service station?
To check the mass air flow sensor, you need to unscrew the clamp. This clamp secures the air intake corrugation. This action should be performed with a curved screwdriver. After the clamp has been removed, we begin to carefully remove the pipe. Inspect the surface of the pipe. Look inside the pipe, it should be clean and, of course, dry.
Using a 10mm wrench, unscrew the fastening elements of the mass air flow sensor in the Priora and inspect it. The rubber ring at the edge of the entrance should be in place. If this is not the case, correct it or replace it. If this is not done, then due to dust that gets into the sensor, it will stop working correctly.
If oil or traces of it were found in the design of the part, this will indicate that your oil sump is clogged, or that the concentration of lubricant in the engine is increased. In the first case, clean the system, and in the second, drain the excess oil.
Troubleshooting methods
If you don’t want to waste money on buying a new mass air flow sensor, you can try to restore its functionality. Using a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the screws securing the measuring element to the regulator. Restoring functionality involves flushing the device, so you need to prepare a cleaning agent in advance, for example, you can use carburetor flushing liquid. The aerosol tube must be bent at a right angle in advance.
Next, the tube is heated and cut so that it is straight, but the stream is directed to the side. The tube must be inserted approximately 1 cm into the upper valve of the dismantled component, after which the resistor is washed. This procedure must be repeated several times at intervals of 2-3 seconds, but do not forget that the resistor is not able to withstand large mechanical loads. Therefore, under no circumstances should you clean the device with cotton wool, brushes or compressed air (the author of the video is the VAZ hand made channel).
Wait a few minutes for the cleaner to dry completely. When the resistor is dry, it can be replaced in place in the housing. Having done this, you can again diagnose the flow meter. It should be noted that after cleaning the controller, some characteristics of the power unit may be changed. If this is the case, then it is necessary to diagnose the toxicity of exhaust gases and adjust this parameter, if necessary.
Replacement and installation instructions
We have studied the malfunctions and symptoms, what a mass air flow sensor is is now clear. If we succeed in checking, and we know that the flow meter is faulty, all that remains is to replace it. To do this, you need to prepare a replacement unit (you can buy a non-standard model) and a screwdriver. Visual inspection implies analysis, but let’s repeat it again:
- You need to turn off the engine and remove the key from the ignition.
- Pull out the sensor connector as shown in the photo.
- Now you can remove the hose on the inlet pipe. It is attached with clamps to the air filter. After removing the clamps, the hose can be dismantled.
- Now we can remove the mass flow sensor and perform the replacement.
Installing a new element is done in exactly the same way.

Another sensor is built into the mass air flow sensor, the task of which is to measure the temperature of the air flow passing through the channels. Its main part is a thermistor. This is the name of a resistor whose resistance changes with temperature changes.
This sensor is located in the air flow. Its output signal is a different voltage registered by the car's ECU, varying between 0.2-3V . More accurate voltage and sensor status data are given in the table below.
Voltage (V) | Sensor status |
0,99 — 1,01 | Condition of the new sensor |
1,01 — 1,02 | Sensor in good condition |
1,02 — 1,03 | Normal state of the air flow sensor |
1,03 — 1,04 | Needs to be replaced soon |
1,04 — 1,05 | The sensor practically does not work, it needs replacement |
1.05 - higher | Replace urgently, the sensor is completely faulty |
Measuring the MAF voltage on a Priora
If any malfunction occurs in the circuit of this sensor, the on-board controller detects and records its code P0110, simultaneously turning on the warning light on the dashboard. If the sensor breaks down, the ECU automatically sets a constant average value for the incoming air temperature.
If you perform self-diagnosis, then based on its result, one of two possible codes will be displayed on the dashboard - 33 (strong signal from the mass air flow sensor) or 34 (weak signal from the mass air flow sensor). In any case, this will indicate that you need to check all contacts connecting the flow meter. These codes are displayed on the instrument panel of Kalina, Priora, Grants, Niva, VAZ 2114, 2110 families.
What happens with reduced or increased air flow?
Communities Lada Priora Lada Priora Club Blog Trouble check and blinking
You should definitely know that air affects not only the amount of fuel burned in the engine, but also the dynamic characteristics of the car. Therefore, deviations from the above standard indicators lead to the following consequences:
- if there is less air than needed, fuel is consumed more slowly. However, at the same time, dynamic characteristics decrease and engine power decreases;
- With increasing consumption, the dynamics increase, but the fuel burns much faster.
In addition, if the deviation is 2-4 kilograms from the norm in any direction, then the power unit may go into emergency mode and begin to work incorrectly.
Replacing the air flow sensor
To replace the sensor with your own hands, you need to prepare a shaped screwdriver and a “10” key.
The replacement procedure consists of the following steps:
- First you need to turn off the ignition and open the hood.
- Then you need to disconnect the negative terminal on the battery.
- At the next stage, you need to loosen the clamp with which the corrugation is attached to the mass air flow sensor.
- Next, remove the corrugation from the pipe.
- Then you need to bend the comb and disconnect the sensor connector.
Thus, if the car stalls and has all the signs of a breakdown of the mass air flow sensor, then before you start repairing it, you should check the level of its signal, it should not be low, perform a full diagnosis of the car and repair all faulty components and parts.
It is important to undergo regular vehicle inspections and perform timely maintenance, then the parts and components will last longer.
Why does air flow change and what to do about it?
If the air flow suddenly changes, and along with it the fuel begins to burn much faster than before, then you need to pay attention to the following parts of the car:
- carburetor throttle valve designed to supply air. It sometimes jams due to clogging and requires urgent cleaning. If this is not done, you can observe a rapid deterioration in the dynamic characteristics of the car. Also, if the amount of air decreases, we recommend checking the serviceability of the damper;
- mass air flow sensor (MAF). Before taking measurements, it makes sense to check the functionality of the sensor and replace or restore it. Also, this device must be regularly cleaned of a variety of contaminants in order to show accurate results;
- engine valves that may not be adjusted properly. This causes either too little or too much air to be supplied to the cylinders. Also, exhaust gases may enter the fuel mixture, which is unlikely to have a positive effect on its quality and the performance of the vehicle’s power unit;
- contamination or failure of the air filter in your car. This part ensures the supply of oxygen in sufficient quantity to obtain a high-quality mixture. However, over time, air volumes decrease due to dust, poplar fluff, and various resins accumulated on the filter element.
As you can see, everything is quite simple. Air consumption may increase or decrease mainly due to contamination in the air-fuel mixture preparation system. That is why from time to time (once every 10-20 kilometers) it is necessary to carry out maintenance, replace or clean the filter, carburetor and other parts.
In addition, measurements must be taken with a working sensor. Otherwise, it will give incorrect readings and you will not be able to determine the reason why the air-fuel mixture is too rich or too rich.
As you can understand from this article, the amount of air consumed directly affects the rate of fuel combustion, as well as engine power, ensuring its flawless operation. Therefore, this indicator must be taken into account during preventive maintenance of the Lada Priora, as well as during car repairs. If you promptly identify and correct detected problems with the supply of oxygen to the fuel mixture, you can significantly extend the life of the power unit.
How the air flow sensor looks and works in a Lada Priora car
Communities Lada Priora Lada Priora Club Blog What tie rod ends are on Priora
In some ways it resembles a wind tunnel. Because of its shape. It is made in the form of a short plastic pipe with a diameter of about 5 centimeters. It can be divided into three parts:
- The body is in the form of a pipe.
- Sensor located on it.
- Protective grille and rubber gasket on the rim.
The connector for this sensor goes out. While the main, reading part is located inside. The basis of the device is a special thread made of an alloy of rare earth metals. In addition, the Priora air flow sensor has a heating circuit. This is done so that in winter the computer can quickly begin to receive signals from the device. After all, a frozen thread does not work correctly. The meaning of its operation and the principle of operation is to change the resistance of this thread depending on the speed of air passing through the nozzle. Based on these data, the Priora control unit (ECU) calculates the mass of air that has entered the cylinders over a certain period of time. That is, when the throttle valve opens, the flow increases accordingly. And the ECU calculates the fuel rate.
Important! This is the most expensive of the sensors in the entire Priora ECM and you need to treat it very carefully.
Where it is located
The sensor module is installed on the air filter housing near the battery in the Priora engine compartment. A rubber air duct tube is attached to it, leading to the throttle valve assembly.
Symptoms of a problem
The most unpleasant thing about this issue is that very often malfunctions of this device do not cause the “Check Anger” warning light to turn on. Meanwhile, it is the performance of this unit that ensures the uniform operation of the Priora engine. But there are many signs of a malfunction of this unit. These are:
- Sudden loss of power while driving.
- Increased fuel consumption of Priora.
- Jerks both while driving and at idle.
- “Swimming speed at idle.
- Difficulty starting.
Lots of signs. However, the problem is that they can also be caused by other reasons. Only qualified computer diagnostics can help here. After all, if the Check Anger light is not on and there are no errors in the memory, then only observing the linear parameters of the mass air flow sensor in the testing program will indicate inconsistencies in the air/fuel section.
Attention! The normal indicator in this area, for the Priora engine, is approximately 10-11 kg/min. Any deviation from this indicates a malfunction
In general, to be honest, hand on heart, we can say one thing: the most reliable test of this unit is to replace it with a known-good sensor.
Replacement
But this simplest operation is available to any car enthusiast. It is attached to the filter housing with just two No. 10 wrench bolts. And the rubber pipe is tightened with a screwdriver clamp. To replace this node, you just need to do a few steps:
- Disconnect battery.
- Disconnect the air flow sensor connector.
- Unscrew 2 bolts.
- Release the clamp and remove the device housing.
- Replace the rubber band with a new one.
- Reassemble in reverse order.
By the way, for example, any air leak in the intake system that appears in the area of the air duct located after this device affects the operation of the engine in the same way as a failed sensor. Therefore, it is necessary to take the diagnosis of this node very seriously.
Important! This device is very sensitive to moisture! There is a particularly high risk of damage when washing the engine. Because if ordinary water gets on the reading thread, it will ruin it with a probability of 50%, then liquid with any detergent additives will kill it by 100%.
Many users on the Internet advise “cleaning” the mass air flow sensor. This is fundamentally wrong and most often leads, on the contrary, to guaranteed failure.
The video demonstrates the operation of the machine with a faulty mass air flow sensor:
- Rain sensor on Priora
- Internal CV joint on Mazda 3-6 cars
- Internal CV joint of Golf 2-4 cars
- Internal CV joint of Passat B2-B6 cars
Video “Checking the mass air flow sensor using a multimeter”
This video from the “Simple Opinion” channel demonstrates how to check the mass air flow sensor with a multimeter.
The mass air flow sensor (MAF) is installed on modern cars with injection engines between the air filter and the air intake and is designed to estimate the amount of incoming air required to create a fuel-air mixture. This sensor is one of the most expensive sensors installed on a vehicle.
But, unfortunately, like other car equipment, it can fail.
If the mass air flow sensor is faulty, the “Check Engine” indicator turns on, and the readings of the faulty sensor are replaced by the controller with a fixed air temperature value of 33 degrees C.
Signs of a DMRV malfunction may include:
Before buying a new one, you should make sure that the sensor installed on the car is working. You can check the functionality of this sensor yourself; for this you will need a multimeter.
1. Check the voltage on the mass air flow sensor block:
The voltage at pin No. 2 should be at least 12 V, and at pin No. 4 about 5 V.
If the device readings are different, it means the battery is discharged, the power circuit or the computer is faulty.
2. How to check the Bosch mass air flow sensor (articles: 0 280 218 004, 0 280 218 037, 0 280 218 116):
Try to reach along the sensor connector wires without disturbing the insulation.
On the new device, the output voltage ranges from 0.996 to 1.01 V.
During operation, this voltage gradually increases and by its value you can find out about the wear of the mass fuel flow sensor:
- if the sensor is in good condition, the voltage is from 1.01 to 1.02 V;
- in satisfactory condition - from 1.02 to 1.03 V;
- the sensor resource ends if the voltage is in the range from 1.03 to 1.04 V;
- a value in the range from 1.04 to 1.05 indicates a near-death state; if there are no contraindications, then you can continue to use the sensor;
- if the voltage exceeds 1.05 V, the mass air flow sensor requires replacement.
Compare the device readings:
The voltage of the new mass air flow sensor is 0.996V -1.01V;
If the voltage is within 1.01 V-1.02 V, then the sensor is in good condition;
If the voltage is within 1.02 V-1.03 V, then the condition of the sensor is satisfactory, still working;
If the voltage is within 1.03 V-1.04 V, the sensor’s service life ends;
The voltage is in the range of 1.04 V - 1.05 V, then the condition of the sensor is critical, if there are no negative symptoms, it can be used for now, but it will soon need to be replaced;
If the voltage is 1.05 V or more, it's time to purchase a new sensor.
The mass air flow sensor (MAF or flow meter) is an important part of the car, the proper operation of which determines the engine power and its fuel consumption. You can find it under the hood of the car, where it is located between the air filter and the air pipe directed to the throttle valve. The task of the mass air flow sensor is to measure the amount of air passing into the cylinders and transmit this information to the electronic control unit, that is, the “brains” of the machine. Based on the data from the mass air flow sensor, the control unit decides whether to increase or decrease the air supply to the combustible mixture.
If a mass air flow sensor fails, it is almost never repaired, but simply replaced with a new one. Its design is quite simple, and it consists of a housing in which a device for measuring air flow is placed - a hot-wire anemometer. It is enough to damage the diagnostic device during the process of dismantling the mass air flow sensor or cleaning it, and the entire sensor will need to be replaced. It can also fail after a long service life, but you can verify its malfunction only after checking.
