Applicability for vehicles

Brand name – LT – LuzarThermostat

Thermostats are necessary to direct the flow of coolant in the cooling system of automobile engines, thereby regulating the temperature of the coolant.

  1. when the temperature rises (usually at ≈80ºC), the main thermostat valve opens while the bypass valve closes;
  2. the radiator is included in the cooling circuit;
  3. the coolant temperature drops;
  4. When the temperature decreases, the reverse process occurs.

If you need to purchase a thermostat for a car, you need to know a few simple rules.

The operation of a car thermostat is characterized by two parameters:

The service life of a car thermostat depends on the degree of professionalism of the manufacturer and depends on the following points:

  • thermostat designs
  • pairing parts
  • production technologies
  • technical production capabilities
  • raw materials used
  • level of control of finished products

In turn, the accuracy of the auto thermostat is “revealed” by several indicators:

  • opening temperature
  • opening speed
  • valve lift
  • pressure at which the valve seals when closed

When choosing a thermostat, it should be remembered that two different vector requirements for the operation of the cooling system will depend on the indicated indicators - on the one hand, rapid warming up of the engine (and, therefore, a comfortable temperature in the car interior) and, on the other hand, the moment of “connection” to cooling radiator circuit (“large cooling circle”) to avoid engine overheating. It is the thermostat that solves the most important and controversial problem - to achieve the optimal engine temperature, while ensuring the absence of overheating, the flow of hot liquid into the heating radiator and comfort in the cabin, smoothing out the effect of “thermal shock”.

The simplest method of checking the thermostat is to put it in hot water and monitor the performance indicators indicated above.

LUZAR produces thermostats for both passenger cars, commercial vehicles and trucks. Today, LUZAR’s product range includes more than 20 models of thermostats for both domestic and imported cars.

Design of LUZAR thermostats

The terms should be distinguished:

  • thermostat in a broad sense (car part, thermostat in a housing, thermostat as a “function”)
  • thermostat in the “commodity” sense (a replaceable part of the thermostat, can be either a thermostat in the housing or a thermoelement; what is sold as a thermostat for a given machine)
  • thermoelement (“working” part of the thermostat, in some cases may coincide with the name of the thermostat in the “commodity” sense)
  • temperature sensor (the executive part of the thermostat is part of the thermoelement; it is a brass cylinder with a filler that expands when heated)

An automobile thermostat consists of a temperature sensor, which is a brass cylinder with a filler (technical paraffin or thermal wax), which expands when heated, with a rod on which spring-loaded plates of the main and bypass valves are placed; the temperature sensor is rigidly fixed to the frame, through which the thermoelement can be installed in the thermostat housing. The valve discs have rubber seals.

Automotive thermostats can be cased or uncased, depending on the design laid down by the designer of the engine.

  • modern automotive industry, with the increasing complexity of automobile engines, is switching to the use of electronic thermostats, where temperature control is carried out by sensors, and the thermostat valves are controlled by micromotors (LUZAR does not produce electronic thermostats)
  • Many modern engines have not one, but two or more thermostats - for non-uniform temperature control in different parts of the engine.

Thermostat

Remembering the past winter, during which the engine kept the temperature at 75-78 degrees, I decided to change the thermostat. I went to the store and bought an 85 degree thermostat in a Luzar case. At home, like an old vase maker, I threw it into a saucepan and boiled it with a thermometer. Everything is fine, it opens at 85, closes at 80. Not bad, I thought and went to install it on the car.

Installing the thermostat is quite easy. Pull the air filter off its mounts (three rubber feet) and screw it onto the engine. Unplug the electrical connectors from the filter and from the temperature sensor on the thermostat. Pull the pipes off the thermos. Before doing this, drain the antifreeze, of course. The thermostat itself on the 126 engine is held on two studs with M8 nuts. Unscrew the nuts and take out the old thermos. We clean the gasket, install new everything and everything.

The next morning I was disappointed. Not even that, it would be more correct to say DISAPPOINTED. No, the thermostat opens to 85 degrees, everything is clear. But after this, the engine temperature very quickly drops to 75 (!) motherfucking degrees! Then the thermostat closes (more precisely, it closes as the temperature drops) and the cycle repeats again.

So, what happened: a stable temperature of 78 degrees + - 3 degrees (readings on the dashboard).

What happened: floating temperatures in the range of 75-85 degrees.

Damn, how is it...

I freaked out and went to the forums to read. I read that people saw the rod and by this very action increases the opening temperature of the thermostat. It seems logical that the shortened rod later begins to open the thermostat. But this method has one drawback: the full opening stroke of the thermostat is reduced.

I took an old, original thermostat (which says made in Germany) and sawed off a couple of millimeters of the stem. Luzarovsky left as a spare. I installed a cut-off thermostat on the car and now the temperature does not fall below 80, and does not rise above 86. This is at an ambient temperature of +5 ... +10 degrees.

In principle it's normal. Next winter I’ll try the Luzarov thermostat at 92 degrees, the so-called winter thermostat. If it has a temperature range of 92-82 degrees, that’s quite good.

I also took the winter tires to be studded with repair studs to replace the ones that had fallen out over 4 winters.

The number of spikes that fell out on the wheels turned out to be: 3, 4, 9, 13. Now guess which tires were on the drive wheels)

Repair spikes are a cool thing. Thick, with a wide stud sole and a plastic clip of the stud body. The spike itself is, of course, iron. Let's see how they spend the winter, whether it's worth additional studding to replace those that have fallen out or not. The price of work with the cost of a spike is 20 rubles (100 tenge).

Advantages of LUZAR thermostats

  1. Computer dosage of thermal wax LUZAR thermostats have thermal sensors filled using special equipment, which guarantees high accuracy of operation.
  2. Patented thermal sensor design To eliminate the possibility of a “breakthrough” of thermal wax from the thermal sensor body (which, according to statistics, is the most common cause of thermostat failure), LUZAR changed the configuration of the sealing gasket in the rod-thermal wax-cylinder interface. With increasing pressure, which expands when heated, the thermal wax gasket design - thanks to its specific geometry - forms an increased volume of rubber precisely in places where the thermal wax “breakthrough” may occur. This also required changing the geometry of the temperature sensor housing (“cylinder”).
  3. Rubberized valves We have eliminated the cause of insufficient tightness of the thermoelement - the metal-to-metal interface between the metal frame of the thermoelement and the metal valve plate - by using a rubber sealing gasket on the valve plate. Thus, LUZAR thermostats provide faster engine warm-up in winter (which is so important in Russian conditions climate).
  4. 100% control of thermoelements Each thermoelement is tested for temperature, height and response speed - carried out in special baths with cells.
  5. Warranty 2 years or 125,000 km. Mandatory certification In the event of a breakdown, you can easily replace the purchased thermostat through a retail store - just return it with a warranty card and a description of the defect. All products are certified according to the international quality management system ISO 9001 TUV and have GOST-R certificates of conformity.

Luzar thermostat test

A LUZAR LT 0190 thermostat with an opening temperature of 85 degrees was purchased. For XRAY, Largus and Priora with AMT it has the article number LT 0194.

The first test was at home. Before installing it on the machine, the thermostat was tested for functionality in a saucepan on the stove. The beginning of the thermostat opening turned out to be about 88 degrees (there is a tolerance of ±2 degrees, i.e. 83-87 degrees). When cooling at a temperature of 95 degrees, the moving element of the thermostat began to close.

After installing the thermostat, it was tested in practice. The coolant temperature under different operating modes of the car maintains an average value of about 85 degrees, which corresponds to the marking.

Comparison of two thermostats during the engine warm-up phase:

The external conditions of the experiment were the same (-10..-14 degrees outside, stove fan at 3 levels). The owner notes that after 14 minutes from starting the engine, in the first case the engine warmed up to 63 degrees, and in the second case, during the same time it warmed up to 69 degrees.

ps from December 2022, the plant began to install DONGFENG-FUJI-THOMSON THERMOSTAT CO.,LTD thermostats instead of Behr Thermot-Tronik thermostats GMBH Changwon. The AVTOVAZ press service reported that this did not affect the consumer characteristics of the cars.

Behr thermostat test

A car with a factory thermostat has driven almost 100 thousand km in 5.5 years. Currently, after long and short trips around the city and on the highway, it was noted that in operating mode the coolant temperature does not rise above 80 degrees. and stays in the range of 75-80 degrees.

It seems that the thermocouple is somewhat tired and has changed its characteristics. The owner notes that in winter the cabin is not as comfortable as before. For this reason, it was decided to replace the standard thermostat with an analogue from Luzar.

The thermostat, in principle, is good, but there is one flaw: the fan switch sensor is located almost in a small circle, and not at the outlet of the block. and when the thermostat opens, the temperature of the liquid jumps and shows less than the actual one and because of this, the fan turns on a little later.

For two winters I suffered in a cold car, the engine did not heat up above 80, I got tired of installing LUZAR, the temperature rose to 92, it heats up and stays there.

In the summer I bought a thermostat from this company, I just didn’t want to wait a few days for the original (now I really regret it), after installation I immediately changed the temperature sensor as it was glitching, then showing -40, then showing +80, when I removed it there was not a single identification mark on it, now winter has come and the car does not heat up at a temperature of 54 degrees and is already driving in a long circle. It’s 100% defective, so I don’t advise anyone to take the Luzar LT20Z8 for a Citroen C4.
