At the bottom of the car, unscrew the nut securing the left motor mount. We unscrew the two nuts with which the rear motor mount is attached to the body. We unscrew the two bolts with which the rear engine support is attached to the transmission (the second key is used to keep the nuts from turning), and remove the support. Transmission removal process
When the design of the element has become clear, you can proceed directly to the process of removing the gearbox. It is worth noting that this procedure may be associated with unit repair or auxiliary operations, such as, for example, clutch replacement. So, let's consider the sequence of actions:
- First, you need to install the car on the inspection hole, since the gearbox is removed downwards.
- We remove the “minus terminal” to de-energize the car.
- We dismantle the engine protection from below, if present.
- Remove the front wheels.
- Disconnect the speedometer and clutch cables.
- Next, you need to disable the rocker drive.
- On the gearbox side, the engine mount must be removed.
- Now that the preparatory operations have been completed, let's move on to removing the necessary assembly. Drain the oil from the gearbox.
- We remove the internal CV joints from their seats.
- After dismantling the fasteners, disconnect the gearbox from the engine.
- We dismantle the unit completely.
- If necessary, reassemble in the reverse order.

As mentioned earlier, the gearbox is dismantled for repair and restoration operations. Perhaps this is the main reason, but it is worth considering the issue of removing the unit in more detail:
- The first and main reason for which removal of the gearbox will be required is the repair of this unit itself.

Dismantling

- Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery and drain the oil from the gearbox system.
- Unscrew the bolts that hold the crankcase guard in place and remove it.
- Disconnect the ground (wire) from the clutch housing.
- At the end of the clutch cable, loosen the tension on the nuts slightly.
- Remove the cable end from the clutch lever.
- Disconnect the block from the traction relay.
- Disconnect the wire going to the starter traction relay.
- Dismantle the starter itself directly.
- Disconnect the drive rod from the joint tip. We are talking about traction, which switches gears.
- Disconnect the cable from the car's speedometer drive.
- Unscrew the tie rod ball joint.
- Remove and press the steering rod hinge pin out of the strut swing arm.
- The shank of the inner CV joint of the front wheel drive should be pressed out and moved to the side.
- Disconnect the second CV joint.
- Remove the clutch housing shield.
- Release the gearbox from the fasteners holding it to the engine.
- Remove the box.
Carefully remove the gearbox
Be sure to move it horizontally away from the engine before directly removing the gearbox. Then disengage the input shaft. Be careful not to damage the clutch spring petals.
Inspection and repair
After dismantling, parts and assemblies are cleaned and their condition is checked. The crankcase and clutch should be free of chips and cracks. The sliding surfaces are inspected for signs of wear or damage. The bearing clearance should not be more than 0.05 mm. The wear of the seals should not exceed 1 mm. The teeth and landing shafts must be free of chips, cracks and nicks. The shafts must not have any dents. If defects are found, the parts should be replaced with new ones.
If you replace or repair the gearbox yourself, the warranty on the unit will be lost. It is retained only when serviced at certified service stations.

Malfunctions of the gear shift mechanism can lead to damage to parts and failure of such an expensive unit as a gearbox.

The gearbox shift mechanism of a truck (Fig. 1, a) consists of three rods, three forks, three clamps with balls, a fuse for engaging first gear and reverse gear and a locking device. Rods 8, 9, 11 are located in the holes of the internal bosses of the crankcase cover 1. Forks 5, 7, 10 are attached to them, connected to the synchronizer carriages and to the movable gear wheel for engaging first gear and reverse gear.
Clamps 4 hold the rods in the neutral or engaged position, which prevents spontaneous gear disengagement. Each retainer is a ball with a spring installed above the rods in special sockets in the crankcase cover. The rods for the clamp balls have special grooves (holes). Moving the rod with the fork, and therefore the synchronizer, is only possible when force is applied by the driver, as a result of which the ball sinks into its seat.
The locking device prevents two gears from being engaged simultaneously. It consists of a pin 12 and two pairs of balls 6 located between the rods in a special horizontal channel of the crankcase cover. When any rod moves, the other two are locked with balls that fit into the corresponding grooves on the slides.
In order to prevent accidental engagement of reverse gear or first gear when the vehicle is moving, a fuse is mounted in the wall of the gearbox cover, consisting of a bushing, a ring with a spring 3 and a stop. To engage first gear or reverse gear, it is necessary to press the fuse spring all the way, for which some force is applied to the driver control lever.

The gear shift mechanism of a passenger car (Fig. 1, b) is arranged as follows. Rod 14 of the third and fourth gear shift fork is installed in the holes of the front and rear walls of the crankcase, and rods 13 and 16 are installed in the holes of the rear wall and crankcase boss.
The 15, 21, 23 gear shift forks are secured with a bolt on each rod. To hold the rods in the neutral position and in one of the extreme positions when the gear is engaged, they have three sockets, to which the retainer ball 20 is pressed by a spring 19. The clamps are located in bushings and are closed with a cover 18. In the head of each rod there is a groove into which the lower end of the gear shift lever fits.
The locking device consists of three locking blocks 17. The two outer blocks are installed in the holes of the rear wall of the crankcase, and the middle block is in the hole of the rod 14. When the rod 13 or 16 moves, it squeezes out a block that fits into the socket of the middle rod and at the same time presses the other through the middle block cracker to the socket of the opposite rod. This way, these rods will be locked in the neutral position. When moving the middle rod 14, two crackers are squeezed out at once and the outer rods 13 and 16 are fixed.

How to remove the gearbox?
The VAZ 2114 and other models of the LADA SAMARA family range are equipped with a five-speed gearbox combined with a differential and final drive. In principle, the box from the VAZ 2114 is no different from the VAZ 2108. The only thing is that the VAZ 2108 does not have a dipstick, and acceleration on it will be faster.
You will need to remove the box to replace the clutch, clutch bearings, and repair the box.
How to remove the gearbox?
To remove the gearbox we will need:
- set of keys;
- screwdrivers;
- assistant;
- wd-40;
- board or other hanging equipment.
First of all, remove the terminals from the battery and take it out. We drain the oil from the gearbox (How to drain the oil from a gearbox?) and remove the starter (How to remove the starter on a VAZ 2114?). As you work, if you can’t unscrew any fastening or bolt, then don’t forget to use wd-40.
1. Place the car on the overpass (pit) and remove the crankcase protection by unscrewing 3 fasteners.
2. Next we need to remove the clutch cable from the clutch release fork. Then we pull it out of the bracket on the box.
For the purpose of complete understanding for the reader, the slides refer to points 3-19 in order except point 14, where you need to hang the engine.
3. Next you need to remove the wire block from the speed sensor (DS). The block is secured by a spring, so to remove it, compress the spring.
4. Unscrew bolt 1 securing the ignition module bracket to our gearbox. And bolt numbers 2 and 3 shown in the picture.
5. We climb under the car and find the wiring block for the reverse sensor. Let's disconnect it.
6. Then unscrew the 2 bolts securing the torque arm to the box.
7. Loosen the clamp of the transmission gear shift rod. We remove the rod from the gear selection rod hinge by moving it back.
8. Remove the wheel drives. Tie the plug inserted in place of one of the drives with a rope or wire so that it does not fall out when removing the box. The right drive does not need to be completely removed. We disconnect it from the box and hang it in the body, first moving it to the side.
9. So that the box can be removed without additional difficulties, unscrew the two bolts of the left ball joint from the steering knuckle.
10. Unscrew the lower right mount of the gearbox to the engine (number 1 in the figure). The support bracket (number 2 in the figure) is needed from the stud.
11. If necessary, just loosen the fastening of the bracket.
12. Unscrew the 3 fastening bolts, remove the cover (number 1) of the clutch housing (number 2).

15. Unscrew the nut securing the left power unit support (from the bottom of the car)
16. Unscrew the 2 nuts securing the rear support of the power unit to the body.
17. Unscrew the 2 bolts securing the rear support of the power unit to the gearbox, holding the nuts from turning with a second wrench, and remove the support.
18. Inserting a screwdriver between the clutch housing and the cylinder block, slide the gearbox off the guide bushings. Be sure to hold it while doing this.
19. Move the gearbox as far back as possible, passing the rear cover of the box over the front suspension brace (the input shaft should disengage from the clutch). If the input shaft cannot be disengaged from the clutch, push the engine to the side. Lower the front end of the box and remove it from under the car.
How to install the gearbox?
The gearbox must be installed in the reverse order. After installation, you need to adjust the clutch drive (How to adjust the clutch drive?) and the gearbox lever, and fill in the transmission oil.

The five-stage type differs in the size of the shaft and the absence of a bushing in the element. Usually this is what is installed in the VAZ 2114, since the other one is not entirely practical to use. Like any spare part, a gearbox can also break down and fail.
The most common problems are:
Unknown noise: it may be caused by bearing failure or gear wear. In addition, you should play it safe and check the oil level;
The solution to the problem is to completely replace failed spare parts and add oil.

The maximum speed and acceleration capabilities of the car depend on the size of the main pair. It is this element that affects the transmission length. If you change the main pair, you can adjust the length of all gears. Acceleration and top speed also change.
On the VAZ-2109 the main pair is 3.9. Due to this, the maximum speed on this car is lower, but the car accelerates better.
The VAZ-2114 gearbox is a five-speed, mechanical, synchronized gearbox. The main gear is connected to the differential unit. The gears from first to fourth are made in the form of a block and mounted on the input shaft of the box. The fifth block of drive gears is mounted. Having fixed the VAZ 2115 on the lift, you need to open the hood, remove the terminal from the battery and starter, disconnect the ground and the clutch cable. Next, having unscrewed the clutch and starter mounting bolts, we fix the exhaust manifold of the VAZ 2115 engine with a lifting mechanism bracket.
After installing the engine support safety crossbar, we move on to the bottom of the car. We remove the protection, then dismantle the clutch housing after draining all the oil. We disconnect the reverse sensor, loosen the clamps and remove the rod from the rod joint intended for changing gears. We unscrew the stud mounting the VAZ 2115 engine with the gearbox.
