From the very beginning of sales, AVTOVAZ has been installing a modified VAZ 2182 automated transmission (AMT with version 2.0) on the updated Lada Granta family. “Robot” received a number of improvements and new operating modes, which had a positive impact on user ratings. The article presents reviews from auto experts and owners of these cars.
What has been improved in AMT
The AMT upgrades of the new Granta are similar to those on the Lada Vesta with 1.8-liter engines:
- The main gear ratio has been increased from 3.710 to 3.940. This means increased fuel consumption, reduced noise and vibration levels in the transmission, and more dynamic acceleration.
- New AMT operating modes have appeared: creeping, sports and winter.
- AMT gear shift time has been reduced by almost a third.
- In the AMT clutch, the driven disc has increased heat resistance and the friction linings have become thicker, which, coupled with new algorithms, makes field driving more confident.
DSG 7 reviews
Car enthusiasts who switched from a car with a manual transmission to a DSG note that there are no problems using the transmission. The ability to manually change gears allows them to quickly adapt to the new gearbox. Drivers especially emphasize the efficiency of this gearbox. about the DSG are most often positive. Almost all negative reviews are related to the high cost of spare parts for the gearbox and the impossibility of overhauling the DSG. But there are some nuances that lead to the box breaking. Negative factors such as traffic jams, slippage, sudden starts from traffic lights contribute to rapid wear of the clutch and mechatronics.
Real reviews from DSG 7 owners | Video
We went through well-known forums and car clubs, but we won’t be able to parrot you with good reviews about the performance of the DSG 7. Unfortunately, this unit, according to the owners, is damp. Moreover, many (including the editor of this article) had mechatronics or clutch kits changed at low mileage, but this did not exclude further problems. The prospect of ending up with 80-150 thousand rubles worth of repairs is not encouraging.
Reviews
During test drives of the Lada Granta Cross, leading auto media noted improvements in AMT.
Autoreview magazine:
AMT 2.0 with creep mode behaves logically when changing gears and when starting to move, now this transmission is convenient to use in the city. This is the best “robot” with one clutch, and even better than some AMTs with two clutches (for example, on the Mercedes A-class). The crawling mode on the Grant is implemented better (no vibrations at start) than on the Vesta, because the Grant is lighter. I like the AMT 2.0 better than the Jatco 4-speed automatic transmission (suitable only for driving in the city, it is difficult to overtake on the highway and has high gas mileage - 2-3 liters/100 km more than the AMT/manual transmission).
Portal Auto.mail.ru:
Over 300 kilometers, including city traffic jams, mountain roads, and highways, there was not a single situation when the gearbox would not work adequately. There is a small nuance - when starting in reverse up a hill, the car rolls forward, but in fact the only driving mode when it is really inferior to the mechanics is acceleration with the pedal to the floor. In general, the robot is well worth the additional payment of 25 thousand rubles.
AutoMPS website:
The robotic shifts are timely, and by turning on the sport mode, you can confidently overtake without feeling the need to select gears manually. The only nuance is related to the inclusion of reverse gear - AMT goes into reverse with a delay and this must be taken into account when maneuvering uphill. And yet, AVTOVAZ has done a lot of work on the mistakes: now the “robot” can be recommended for purchase.
Owner's review:
I'm happy with the robot. For me, it is better than an automatic and a manual: 1) it switches quickly; 2) it shifts predictably; if necessary, you can change gear by lightly playing the gas pedal; 3) there is engine braking. I use the brakes to a minimum; for me, braking when releasing the gas is important; cheap automatic machines can’t do that; 4) all my life cars have been manual, I switch without thinking anymore, on automatic. But after riding the robot I realized: it really saves time, frees up both your hands and your head); 5) fuel economy compared to an automatic; 6) subjective: the rigid connection of the engine with the transmission, the “slippage” of the automatic torque converter - irritate me. I always drive in “sport” mode. But this is not a sport, I would switch it like that myself))) In “auto” mode it is too smooth and when releasing the gas it holds the highest gears until the last. For example, it changes from fifth to fourth after the speed drops below 50 km/h. Therefore - sport. Bottom line: for me, a robot is the best solution. The only question is resource. Time will tell here.
Also, auto experts and owners of Lada Granta FL (facelift) highly appreciated the new sports mode.

Test drive Lada Granta liftback with AMT robot
The other day we took a test drive in a Lada Granta liftback equipped with an AMT robot. Feedback and impressions are in today’s material.
Granta in the liftback body immediately after its appearance caused mixed opinions. Some people didn't like its design, others didn't like it. Indeed, the rear of the car has changed significantly. Compared to the Grant sedan, the liftback looks a little more modern and fresh. In addition, in this body the car does not look as bulky as a sedan.
To be honest, in the modern AVTOVAZ line, this liftback looks very good. Unlike the sedan, many minor “sores” and childhood illnesses were improved on the liftback. For example, doors open and close with much less effort and noise, thanks to new closers. Hooks for attaching bags appeared in the trunk, plastic cables for securing the rear parcel shelf were replaced by elastic laces that do not burst in the cold, etc. The combination of these changes creates a more pleasant perception of the car.
The trunk volume of the Lada Granta liftback is a good 440 liters, and with the rear seats folded it reaches 760 liters. This is where the main advantage of the liftback body manifests itself - the large tailgate opens completely and makes loading and unloading easy.
Operation, Robot
I immediately want to apologize to my subscribers for such a long absence of updates to the review. No, the car was not sold, nothing happened to it. On the contrary, despite the beliefs of skeptics, the Grant is used mercilessly every day and the mileage is currently already 125 thousand.
I wanted to write an anniversary review for 100 thousand, but due to life circumstances there was absolutely no time for this, and there was nothing special to write then.
What happened to the car during this time?!
We passed the hundred-thousandth milestone with just replaced front risers (98,500 km), a thermostat (99,800 km) and the entire timing belt (tensioner belt, pump). To be fair, the latter was in excellent condition and did not need to be changed. Apparently the previous owner changed everything for about fifty dollars. 15 mm spacers were placed under the front pillars. At 117 thousand, replacement of the right wheel bearing and left support. Both DRL lamps burned out. There was nothing more and little things. Well, it's true!
ROBOT
The inquisitive reader, of course, is not interested in everyday life, he is interested in how the robot is doing there. How many times have I already changed the clutch, actuators and brains? And I have no choice but to satisfy your curiosity.
I declare with responsibility: ROBOT AMT OF VAZ CARS IS THE BEST TRANSMISSION THAT I HAVE EVER OPERATED! No CVTs or automatic transmissions are needed anymore!
And now in more detail I changed the clutch only once at a mileage of 111 thousand. It was like that. Arriving home with the cart, I unhooked it and began to back up the hill. Suddenly something clicked, the gear caught fire and the robot stopped working. The transmission did not turn on and nothing happened. Having rolled Grant back into the territory, I got on my bike and went to kindergarten to pick up my son, simultaneously making an appointment with the OD and thinking about how I could drag her there. Upon arrival, 2 hours later, the car cooled down, the gear went out and, as if nothing had happened, the robot began to robot again and the question “how to drag it there” disappeared by itself. True, the clutch engaged with jerks and vibration. The next day, the OD clutch was replaced with a new reinforced one 21703-1601130-31, with which so far everything is in order and the car starts moving even smoother, like with an automatic transmission. Replacing the clutch cost 11,183 rubles.
It’s a little expensive, but there was no desire to remove the gearbox myself and then send the robot for adaptation. The old driven disk, by the way, was in a state of “still walking and walking,” but several of the petals on the basket were tired
A few days later, maybe a week later, there was still a problem with the robot. This time, while driving evenly in 5th gear, when the speed decreased, the gear caught fire again and the gearbox actuator simply stopped shifting down. I stopped, the 5th gear was on, I tried to move, the car started moving in 5th gear. I turned off the engine and couldn't start it again. The AMT blocked the starter due to a constantly engaged gear. Remembering the previous story with the clutch, I farted for about 5 minutes (since I was not taught to smoke since childhood). I briefly removed the terminal from the battery and, as expected, the gear went out and we could start driving. I made an appointment with the OD again with this misunderstanding and began to study the question of how to hook up to the AMT controller and see the errors for myself. It turned out to be quite simple. For those who still don’t have the ELM 327 adapter version 1.5, we buy it, download the “OpenDiag” application from the Playmarket and for 100 (one hundred) rubles we buy a module for the AMT VAZ from the author of the application. Instructions are available.
In my case, it turned out to be error P1733 (see photo), which was confirmed by the OD.
They didn’t do anything, because it was not clear what it was and what to do. The error was cleared and to this day there have been no more problems with the robot. No problem at all!
Let me speculate a little on the topic “variator vs AMT”. Now the production of Vesta and Rey with a variator is starting and many are already turning their attention to it. But I wouldn’t delude myself, and between the Varik and the robot, I choose the robot. Well, how? I use the car as an adult, often with an overloaded trailer. I'm skidding with this trailer God knows where, and last winter I had to pull the Forester out of a deep snowdrift. They pulled it 3 times, broke 2 cables, and only on the third time, using a discarded sling, they managed to pull it out. Well, what kind of heir to our Da Vinci’s Leonaodo will survive here? No, no, only ROBOT
AMT for LADA Granta. Design Features
Cars of the LADA Granta family (sedan, liftback) have already received a proven AMT, which has been installed on LADA Priora since September 2014. It was developed by engineers of JSC AVTOVAZ together with specialists from the German concern ZF Friedrichshafen AG, which is the author and owner of many modern technologies and innovative solutions in the field of drive systems.
The design of the basic manual gearbox 2181 (modernization of gearbox 2180) was taken as a basis, on which the following were installed:
- 1. Electromechanical actuators that control gear shifting and clutch operation;
- 2. Input shaft speed sensor;
- 3. Controller.
2180 gearbox and electronic control unit
In addition, the following were completely removed from the gearbox:
- 1. Clutch drive;
- 2. Internal switching mechanism;
- 3. Cable gear shift drive.
Inside the car, the clutch pedal was removed, and instead of a mechanical (cable) gear shift drive, an electronically controlled selector was installed.
In addition to original design solutions, modern software was developed specifically for AMT, with the help of which the vehicle’s transmission is controlled.
All these changes, together with the electronic motor control controller and the on-board power supply network, made it possible to fully automate the processes of controlling the clutch and gear shifting, as well as ensuring high AMT functionality.
