Location

To carry out diagnostics on a computer, you must first find where the diagnostic connector is located. It serves to connect control devices and is connected to the electronic unit. The Vesta ECU diagnostic connector is located on the edge of the plastic panel under the mounting block and steering column. It is not closed and is easily accessible for use. This only plays into the hands of the hijackers.

M86 (VAZ and Itelma)

The control units M86 VAZ and M86 Itelma, as well as the software for them, were developed by OJSC AvtoVAZ and NPP Itelma, respectively.

M86 VAZ is installed on all Lada Vesta and Lada XRay with a 1.6 16V engine with index 21129.

M86 Itelma is installed on all Lada Vesta and Lada X-Ray with a 1.8 16V engine with index 21179.

The blocks are not interchangeable, despite their external similarity. But their weaknesses are the same.

The main disadvantage of the M86 block is the ease of car theft.

The unit can be programmed without an ignition key, which has a built-in immobilizer chip. That is, anyone can change the brain of a machine in 5 minutes. Therefore, it is very easy for a car thief to disable the standard fuel pump lock and drive off in an unknown direction.

If your car has an M86 ECU, then you must additionally protect the car. For example, install an additional security system or mechanical protection against theft. And also the M86 block is perfectly amenable to chip tuning and software changes.

Threat of theft

Car thefts are rampant these days, unfortunately. Moreover, it is the inexpensive cars that are the first to come under attack, especially those from class B, which, in fact, includes the Lada Vesta. The reason for this is the prevalence of such machines, as well as, as a rule, the lack of serious protective equipment.

In particular, in the video below, using the example of the Hyundai Solaris model, which is a direct competitor of Vesta, an example of car theft committed by a professional is demonstrated, with the car being broken into and the standard ECU being replaced with one flashed by the thieves (the factory immobilizer was removed from it). As you can see in the story, it took the master about a minute to do everything.

EMS3125

Siemens is developing software for this unit. Compared to the M86, the EMS3125 has more reliable software and, from a mechanical point of view, it is better made.

The Siemens unit can only be reprogrammed with the standard key in the ignition switch. But it’s still possible to steal a car, although it’s much more difficult to do than with the M86 block. The thief needs to replace the control unit under the hood with a pre-prepared one. A protective safe for the control unit can protect against such substitution.

This unit is installed on all vehicles with engine code H4M:

Diagnostic connector protection

Thieves can use the diagnostic connector to steal a car. They open the driver's door, connect their devices to the OBD, disable the protection, and start the engine without the ignition key. To protect the connector, you can block access to it.

The protection for the plug is like a steel box with holes for screws. It is made of two halves. One of them is removed to use the diagnostic connector. The protection is fixed through a bracket to the torpedo struts. The halves are fastened together with screws with heads for a secret key. Every year, experts develop new types of secret keys. This allows you to secure the product.

Which engine control unit is better?

We advise you to rely on personal preferences when choosing a car. But the car with the H4M engine type and the EMS3125 control unit looks slightly more advantageous. It is better protected from theft, and its software is more reliable.

In addition, H4M engines are made by the Renault-Nissan concern. So, for the same money you will get a more reliable car with an engine from Renault-Nissan and a control unit from Siemens.

Lada is a very popular car. And the more they buy, the more they steal. Therefore, it is better to take measures to further protect your car from theft.

With us you can install an anti-theft system, for example, Starline S96. Or any mechanical anti-theft devices - for example, an ECU protection safe or a Garant steering shaft lock. After such tuning, the car will be reliably protected from the vast majority of car thieves.

Solution

It is worth noting that, unlike Solaris, it is a little more difficult to access the Vesta control unit, since it is covered on top by an air filter duct, and dismantling it will take time to get to the unit itself. However, there is nothing to rely on the air filter.

Naturally, all this can be avoided if the ECU is reliably protected. That is why installing 2 security measures in Vesta seems more than justified:

  1. Protection of the Lada Vesta engine control unit;
  2. Protection of the OBD Vesta diagnostic connector from theft (universal).

Buying these two accessories significantly increases your chances of emerging victorious in a fight with a car thief.

With such protection, the owner of Vesta can sleep much more peacefully.

It’s clear what to do, let’s get to work!

We purchase the following components in the store:

Low frequency amplifier microcircuit TDA7560, without a letter code at the end of the name. Cost about 450 rub. Electrolyte with a capacity of 10,000 uF at 25 V with an operating temperature of 105 degrees. The radio is very hot when working. Cost about 100 rubles. Film capacitor with a capacity of 0.47 µF at 250 V, type K73-17. Cost about 20 rubles. We bought the components, remove the radio and take it to the desktop, where we will do the modernization.

This is what the radio looks like on the desktop, where we will solder the microcircuit and connectors.

And this is a marking plate, if anyone doesn’t know.

Let's disassemble the radio! This process did not cause any difficulties; we unscrewed the visible screws and that was it.

This is a view of the PCB with the top cover removed.

We disconnect the cable from the board and unscrew it from the case.

This is what the printed circuit board looks like.

And we will change these elements. The chip is circled in red, the electrolyte in yellow.

Firmware at home. Vesta SW 1.6 - ECU M86 FOR VAZ

The day has come when I finally have all the components for flashing the ECU of my car.

In general, I don’t lay any claim to any kind of discovery, this has been done a thousand times before me, the guys from the drive have it even described in more detail than mine, for example, here, but still. There are just a bunch of assembly diagrams, there is more than one article on the drive. For myself, I chose the simplest and (for me) cheapest option. I bought a K-line USB Adapter State, saving myself from problems with additional power. I bought it here here, the price is quite reasonable, it arrived in 5 days, through SDEK. All the fun amounted to 1020+250 delivery. I took the wires from the old PC power supply, and the pins from there, though they only fit on the thick terminals of the ECU, but it didn’t matter, I squeezed them a little with pliers and they are quite normally attached to a thin pin.

Connecting to the block

12. To flash the block, open a pre-prepared firmware file in HEX format. (there are instructions on how to do it in the archive with the file) 13. Click on the line with the range of addresses, then Select All, then Add Sel 14. Now, in order not to pour anything unnecessary into the block, on the right side click the SW Protect button, check the boxes opposite 16 sectors, starting from 0x00С40000 and up to 0х00С4F000 inclusive. Padlocks will appear opposite them, at the top of the list of files there is already one gray one, everything is fine as it should be. 15. Press the Program button.

We wait, we wait, we see the inscription success in English, it means everything is OK, we close everything in order and run to place the block strictly on 1 nut, because our hands are really itching to check whether IT works or not. What do we have in the end? I didn’t really like the firmware that was made for money, like 4500, it was ADACT dynamic. Everything seemed to be good on it, but it wasn’t exactly dynamic, and it was a little more fun than stock, plus it froze out detonation, like everyone else had when accelerating into tightness in 2.3 gears. I read the articles on the drive and decided to sew it myself, tried Euro 6, after reading this I tried two E6 firmwares, both worked, no errors, I was even a little surprised, I assumed that the 2nd DC was already dead, but no. Yes, the E6 firmware, in my opinion, is more vibrant than stock, but not as active as Adact. I drove the E6 for just a couple of days, reset the initialization block, taught it, everything was written as “here”. PURELY MY OPINION, I agree that the entire training procedure, of course, was not completed for me, but I didn’t like the firmware. Maybe, of course, I haven’t tried it, maybe I need to ride even longer, but no. The dullness when switching is less noticeable, but it is there, and I didn’t feel any “special” dynamics or lift from the bottom. Fuel, of course, is 95. In the end, I bought commercial firmware from the well-known MMK, this is not advertising at all, but why hide it if it is so. And it's a completely different matter. A description of the firmware, with analysis, is on the drive, I found it somewhere here. So far I like everything, the “lower classes” are now behind the scenes, it’s hot, and when the clutch is depressed, the revolutions rise. It’s too early to judge by consumption, but it’s already less. So we use it.

Advantages of an auto scanner

What is the OBD diagnostic connector

“Scanmatik-2” was appreciated even by professional diagnosticians. Having tried this kit once, car enthusiasts were pleasantly surprised that for a relatively low price it allows you to work with a full fleet of domestic cars and an impressive part of foreign ones. When working with the diagnostic kit of this model, you can also use a wireless interface to connect the system to a computer (Bluetooth).

https://youtube.com/watch?v=Q5esXF84-Lk

The OBD-2 connector on Grant regularly supplies power to the diagnostic adapter. In extreme cases, the Scanmatik-2 adapter can be powered from the cigarette lighter. In general, the device is very convenient for performing diagnostic procedures yourself. It even has surge protection. If, for example, you apply current from the cigarette lighter when the system does not need it, nothing bad will happen.

Every device has pros and cons. Many car thieves know how to use the diagnostic connector for their own selfish purposes. As a rule, the diagnostic block is used by criminals to disable the standard immobilizer. A common solution to this problem is to replace the standard block with a “re-pinned” one, with a different arrangement of contacts.

The adapter consists of a “male” (fake connector) and a “female” (standard connector), which is previously removed. It will not be possible to connect standard diagnostic equipment to the new connector without such an adapter, but the chances of saving the car from theft are increased. That's all. Good luck!

For me, the most difficult thing about a car is its “brains”. So I can fix everything myself, but I never get into this computer.

Well, at least the “brains” are not the same as, for example, in Toyota. Nothing can be done there at all without the permission of the BC.

It’s better not to get involved in this system yourself. It's easier to contact a specialist.

Oleg, essentially it’s like that in everything. If you don’t know something, then it’s better to run to a specialist.

Coming out as a replacement.

The Renault-Nissan alliance does not have a six-speed automatic or pre-selective transmission for state employees. Therefore, Lada was given a ready-made power unit, already familiar from other Renault models. Engine 1.6 with 113 hp. localized in Togliatti and digests AI-92 gasoline.

It is assisted by a Jatco JF015E variator with six virtual steps and a multi-layer metal belt. It has a two-stage planetary gearbox and a torque converter, which in the eyes of Tolyatti marketers was enough to dub the unit an automatic machine, and the new modification - Lada Vesta AT. But we will still call the transmission CVT, it’s more honest.

Previously, there were complaints about the variator regarding reliability. They say that now all the troubles have been eliminated, and the transmission lasts 150–200 thousand kilometers without problems. If so, then great.

When installing a CVT on the Logan Stepway, the designers had to sacrifice 20 mm of ground clearance. Xray Cross managed to maintain its fantastic 215 mm. What about Vesta? Yes, the bottom of the CVT crankcase is lower than that of a manual transmission. According to the official specifications, by 7 mm for the regular sedan and station wagon and by 4 mm for the Cross versions. But the engine crankcase is still lower! Therefore, the road and crossover Vestas retained their 178 and 203 mm under protection.

Topic: ECU Lada Vesta

While searching for information on the electronic engine control system, I found information that the Lada Vesta has an M86 EURO-5 controller (ECU). Diagnostics of the electronic engine control system is quite simple, provided that you understand the operating principle of the ECM, have a clear understanding of how a good condition differs from a faulty one, and if you follow the recommended sequence of its implementation. It is important to have the necessary diagnostic tools. The ECM is capable of independently performing self-diagnosis to a certain extent. When a malfunction is detected, the ECM stores a fault code and may illuminate the malfunction indicator in the instrument cluster. When the Check-Engine indicator comes on, it is necessary to diagnose the engine and ECM as soon as possible. For those who independently diagnose the injector, you will need an OBD-II cable or OBD-II ELM327 Bluetooth Adapter. The diagnostic program can be found on the website Chiptuner.ru There are paid and free programs. The Lada Vesta diagnostic connector is located next to the hood opening lever under the steering column on the left.

Diagnostic connector

I don’t know how well thought out the location of the controller under the hood is, but there is a possibility of dirt and water getting through the connectors of the controller harnesses. On previous versions of Lada, all ECUs were located under the glove compartment. Time of use will show whether this is a disadvantage or an advantage.

Considering that a lot of dirt flies under the hood (through the lock), something needs to be done about it. I think it would be better to make an additional seal on the hood, especially in the lock area.

Re: Lada Vesta ECU

I will install an additional seal immediately upon arrival home. In general, the ECU is positioned correctly, the slope of the harnesses goes down. There was a problem with the Grants - some of the ECUs were flooded, even though they were in the cabin. Moisture got in through the harness from the engine compartment, and the connectors were with the wires facing up. Some turned the ECU over, some insulated it. I'm nothing. In Kaliny it was even worse - the ECU was located under the heater radiator, the slightest leak, condensation and it would flood. I think in Vesta you can additionally coat the inputs of the harnesses into the pads with silicone sealant. Everything else there is waterproof.

Renault Megane, there is no hood seal at all, the ECU is located under the hood, all flights are normal, I have not seen or heard any complaints related to dirt getting in.
