The domestic car manufacturer from Tolyatti continues to delight the market with an abundance of new products preparing to be released in the new model year. In addition to the planned appearance of a restyled version of the XRAY crossover in 2022, the well-known hatchback Lada Kalina will be updated. Although, as can be seen from the photos that have appeared, the new car has not received any major changes in body design and interior restyling, however, thanks to the updating of the technical component while maintaining the same attractive price, it can count on a fairly high level of sales, which it already has its 2016 predecessor.

Appearance

This time, largely “thanks” to the success of the previous version, the design of the new body remained almost unchanged. At the front, all the main elements are made in smooth forms - the bumper, headlights and radiator grille. All of them have practically no acute angles, which naturally did not add any noticeable aggression to the features of the “face” of the Lada Kalina 2022.

There are new dark plastic inserts on the sides of the car, which can be seen along the body, on the window pillars and wheel arches. At the same time, from the side it becomes noticeable how much the new car has “grown”. Thanks to the improved chassis and larger diameter wheel rims, Kalina's ground clearance was increased by an impressive 23 mm and amounted to 20.8 cm. Also, thanks to the use of a wider type of tires, the wheel track of the car also increased by 4 mm (all this applies to the Cross version, other modifications remain the same).

At the rear, regardless of whether the body is a hatchback or a station wagon, there have been virtually no changes. Except that the bumper, like the sides of Kalina, “acquired” protective plastic.

Car appearance

The second generation of Kalina has significantly changed its overall appearance and technical characteristics. The body received more aggressive features, which brought the car design closer to the products of the European automobile industry. At the same time, most of the technical solutions of the Lada Kalina 2 station wagon were inherited not from its predecessor, but from the Lada Granta, which is a sedan version of the body of the second generation of the “people's” car of Russia.

First of all, the Lada Kalina station wagon 2 adopted the negative camber, steering, all types of engine and body specifications from the sedan. As is clear from the name of the body, this model allows you to transport cargo of various weights and volumes. Kalina 2 station wagon is the ideal car for country trips with the whole family. Thanks to the spaciousness of the luggage compartment, it is possible to load the car with a large number of purchases.

Despite the spaciousness of the body type in question, the car has retained its compactness and attractive design, making it a city vehicle. Compared to the previous generation, Kalina 2 station wagon looks more aggressive, and the technical characteristics of the car have been modernized in accordance with modern European requirements.

Lada Kalina station wagon 2 has become much more comfortable and safer. The appearance received completely new contours, which transformed the car, giving it dynamism and modernity. This was achieved thanks to the modernization of the front part of the car, which was slightly raised. Now the front lights are located a little higher, and the wheel arches have become embossed.

The car seems more “muscular” due to rethought bumpers that visually enlarge the car. Taking into account the updated technical characteristics, the appearance is fully consistent with the station wagon's interior.

Salon

In contrast to the plastic restyling of Kalina's appearance, the interior remained completely untouched. The only thing the designers of the new model “had enough” for was adding bright orange inserts to the dark and gloomy tones of the previous version, which were given to the steering wheel, doors and interior seats.

The three-spoke steering wheel is made in a modest version, not equipped with advanced functionality. The entire control unit for electronic functions is concentrated in the center of the dashboard and, in the absence of a full electronic display, looks rather retrograde.

As for the number of seats, there are still five of them. There is no reason to count on the appearance of a seven-seat version yet, except perhaps in later versions of Kalina.

In addition to the general improvement in sound insulation of the cabin, we can only talk about increased comfort for the driver and front passenger, while the appearance of the second row hints at a not-so-best level of amenities.

Thanks to the folding rear seats, the luggage compartment volume can easily be increased from a meager 355 to an impressive 670 liters. The car's tank will allow you to fill half a hundred liters at a time.

Specifications

The basic version boasts a suspension with new shock absorbers. As for the power plant, there are “no options.” This Kalina model has only one gasoline engine. Its characteristics are very modest, where the power is an insignificant 89 hp. at a maximum speed of 165 km/h, they give a very good result in terms of efficiency - 7.1 liters per 100 km. At the same time, it is also paired with only one transmission option - a five-speed manual gearbox.

As for the drive, in the basic version only a one-wheel drive version of the car will be available, while the second version of the Kalina modification - Lada Kalina Sport 2018 - should be all-wheel drive.

The Lada Kalina “norm” includes 5 versions. The main difference between the versions is the power of the power unit, the presence or absence of a manual or automatic transmission.

Options and prices

Regardless of the price, both configurations of Kalina will be equipped with an ABS anti-lock braking system, front airbags, air conditioning and heated front seats, electric windows, an alarm and central locking with remote control.

The basic configuration of the Lada Kalina 2022 will cost the Russian buyer 400 thousand rubles, while the price tag for extended versions will start at 450 thousand. Also, for the optional all-wheel drive option, you will need to pay about 50 thousand more on top.

The most expensive luxury package is offered only with 16-valve engines producing 106 hp (manual) and 98 hp (automatic). In addition to air conditioning or a climate system, you can count on alloy wheels measuring 14 or 15 inches (depending on the version) plus a multimedia system with a monitor in the center console.

Competitors

Oddly enough, but most likely the new Lada Kalina 2022 model year will compete with models from its own manufacturer - Largus and Vesta. At the same time, Vesta will benefit from its much more modern external and internal components, while Largus has established itself as a reliable car, albeit with modest aesthetic indicators.

The Kalina developers, while maintaining almost the same interior design and not paying attention to updating the interior, thus betting on the success of the previous model, risk that the car may receive the status of an “outdated new product” and not live up to the expectations that are associated with it potential buyers.

At the same time, this model remains a good hatchback option, and thanks to its advanced modifications, it is a good intermediate option between a passenger car and a full-fledged crossover, allowing you to get the maximum practicality at a relatively low price.

Just five years ago, the range of station wagons and minivans on our market was quite decent, although in Russia there are still strong stereotypes that such cars are only suitable for pensioners. Alas, exchange rate fluctuations, rising car prices and the market collapse almost “finished off” both segments. Our review will consist of three parts. In the first, we will look at station wagons in the price segment up to one and a half million rubles. In the second, we will pay attention to expensive station wagons, whose price tags begin after the announced mark. For starters, let's take a virtual tour of the dying minivan market.

In the price segment up to a million rubles, only localized models remain. These are, of course, VAZ products, as well as cargo-passenger versions of the Ford Focus, Hyundai i30 and Kia cee'd. Plus the Hyundai i40 class D+ and the interclass Skoda Octavia Combi. Until recently, the concern's brothers Opel Astra and Chevrolet Cruze were available, but with the departure of GM we lost them.

Second generation station wagon configurations

The second generation Kalina station wagon is available in 3 different trim levels: Standard, Normal, Lux. The first configuration is basic; it is equipped with only the most necessary equipment. The driver is protected from injury in the event of an accident by a front airbag. The car has an anti-theft system in the form of an immobilizer. The standard kit includes mountings for Isofix child seats.

The front seat belts can be adjusted to suit the height of the passenger and driver. The steering wheel is equipped with an electric power steering, which greatly simplifies the rotation of the steering wheel even when the car is stationary. In this case, the steering column can be adjusted to the angle of inclination. The front doors of the Lada Kalina station wagon are equipped with electric window lifts.

The Standard station wagon is equipped with a cabin air filter, athermal windows, central locking, as well as a single key for door locks and ignition. The car is available in both pastel and metallic colors. Additional functionality is added by roof rails integrated into the roof part of the body. The basic package is equipped with 14-inch stock wheels.

The Norma position includes all the equipment of the previous configuration. At the same time, it is equipped with certain improvements that affect the comfort, safety and technical characteristics of the car. The package adds a front passenger airbag, pre-tensioning seat belt technology and a remote controlled alarm.

Additional safety is provided by the ABS+BAS braking system, which allows you to stop the car more smoothly.

The salon received an extended sound insulation package. The factory sound system is integrated into the center console. The front seats are equipped with heating technology. Comfort in the standard configuration is achieved thanks to a climate system with built-in air conditioning. The top position of the station wagon is the Luxury package. It includes all the components of the above packages. At the same time, the following equipment has been added to its set of improvements:

The share of Kalina with a station wagon body is amazing - during the entire production period of Kalina, almost half of the sales came from the station wagon.

Kalina remains not only one of the most popular, but also the cheapest station wagon on our market. In the basic Standard version with an 87-horsepower engine, the buyer receives front electric windows, ABS, a driver's airbag and electric power steering. Modest, but inexpensive - 433,100 rubles.

Kalina is not distinguished by exquisite handling and excellent sound insulation. But its arsenal includes an impenetrable suspension, an engine with good performance and excellent efficiency, as well as high ground clearance. And in 2014, a year after the launch of the updated Kalina, a pseudo-off-road version of the Cross appeared with increased ground clearance, an off-road body kit and larger tires.

The Kia cee'd SW is a rare case: the station wagon version is almost as popular as the hatchback. The Sid turned out to be very balanced - stylish appearance, quite decent handling and good dynamics. True, for our market the range of engines ends with a 1.6-liter unit. And, of course, the most important trump card is the price. A basic station wagon with a manual transmission and a 100-horsepower engine is offered for 814 thousand rubles, which is 150 thousand cheaper than its closest competitor, the Ford Focus. It is not surprising that in Russia the Kia cee'd has become the most popular non-VAZ station wagon.

Sid's equipment cannot be called completely empty - front and side airbags, audio system, multifunction steering wheel, ABS, etc. The main drawback is that the suspension is not the most energy-intensive, which severely lacks a safety margin on large potholes. The trunk opening has become a victim of style - it is very narrowed at the bottom and top, which reduces cargo capacity.

Hyundai i30

Hyundai i30 is the closest relative of the Kia cee'd, built on the same platform. The basic version is more expensive - 909 thousand rubles. But Hyundai initially has a 1.6 engine with 130 hp. True, this is where the choice of power units ends. The standard equipment is a little better - there are rear electric windows and fog lights. Nevertheless, the i30 did not gain much popularity. Before the Opel Astra and Chevrolet Cruze station wagons left the market, it was not even among the top five best-selling “barns.” However, the i30 hatchback cannot be called a bestseller.

The 2018 Lada Kalina station wagon is still a very popular car. A fairly affordable price and options-rich configurations allow you to choose the best option for a practical car. True, in the near future the manufacturer promises to stop producing the Lada Kalina Wagon, but don’t be upset, it will be replaced by a Granta in the same body.

“Standard” package

Lada Kalina in the “Standard” category met the requirements of Euro-2, 3, was equipped with an 8-valve 1.6-liter engine and was equipped with the following options:
