Now Kalina is a functional, technologically advanced and modern car, reflecting the development trends of the domestic automobile industry.

You can also choose a suitable transmission if you wish, this is the good old mechanics from AvtoVAZ or a reliable Japanese four-speed automatic. There are currently only seven body paint shades on sale: in addition to the standard black and white, there are brown, orange, blue, silver and dark gray.

The car can be safely used not only in the city, but also outside it. The suspension is also designed for dirt roads. The car is equipped with three types of engines, differing in power.

It is considered one of the most popular types. Any European or Japanese small car can envy Kalina in terms of fuel consumption, and the cost of a native car is incomparably lower. It is not surprising that many motorists choose a practical station wagon. Compared to the hatchback, the interior is more spacious: three people of average build can fit in the back, and for two people the conditions are completely comfortable, even with headrests installed.

But the main advantage of the station wagon is, of course, its spacious trunk and wide door opening angle. The body design is dominated by smooth lines and minimalism, there is no hint of unnecessary details. As in the previous case, seven body colors are available.

The main distinguishing feature of this version is the increased ground clearance, allowing the car to overcome large obstacles like a real crossover. The differences don't stop at ground clearance. The car has a different interior design; the dark finish is complemented by numerous inserts to match the body color. Kalina Cross got the trunk from a station wagon and is perfect for both everyday driving around the city and for trips to the country. This modification can also be distinguished by the black plastic lining on the wheel arches and on the sills.

The most expensive and most prestigious modification. Available exclusively in a hatchback body. In order to be called a sports version, this modification of Kalina is equipped with a 118 hp engine. s., allowing you to accelerate to 200 km/h, so the spoiler-wing does not serve an aesthetic purpose at all.

The seats in the cabin have pronounced lateral support, which is not present in previous versions. The car has a modernized suspension that allows it to hold the road perfectly and provide good grip. On Kalina Sport you can easily take any sharp turn at high speed and not be afraid of tipping over. The only drawback is the rather high price compared to all other modifications.

The 1.6-liter VAZ 11183 engine is the weakest in the line of power units. The 8-valve engine is noisy and prone to vibration, but does not bend the valve causing the belt to break.

The 1.4-liter VAZ 11194 engine is slightly more powerful thanks to its 16-valve head. It was created specifically for Kalina, but has a bad reputation due to the oil-eater.

The 1.6-liter VAZ 21126 engine is the newest, most powerful and reliable in the line. It was installed in the Lux configuration, so it is much less common than we would like.

The manual transmission of the VAZ 1118 has a lot of problems: unclear shifts, rapid wear of synchronizers, sudden loss of reverse gear and a strong howl.

On the latest cars of 2013, there is a VAZ 2181 manual transmission with a cable drive. This mechanics also cannot be called ideal, but it is much more pleasant to use.

There are few problems with the chassis of the car, everything is done extremely simply and inexpensively. Closer to 50,000 km, wheel bearings or shock absorbers may require replacement. After 100,000 km, it is worth paying attention to the silent blocks of the levers and ball joints.

If you replace the original pads with something good, then there will be no complaints about the brakes. The steering rack has a low service life; sometimes it knocks even after 50,000 km. The recall company for defective electric amplifiers did not really touch the station wagon.

Special versions of Lada Kalina II

The first to appear was Kalina Sport from a subsidiary of Lada Sport. The 1.6 engine was pumped up to 118 horsepower, the gearbox was reconfigured, disc brakes were added on the rear axle, an interior with bucket seats - it turned out to be the dream of any young street racer.

And there was also the ultimate Kalina NFR, which out of the box was ready to conquer adult race tracks and rally stages. The modifications there are even more serious: 140 horsepower was squeezed out of the engine, and it was also mounted on a subframe for greater rigidity. The suspension of the Lada Kalina was stiffened even more so that the car would hold the road to the last and would not be distracted by rolls and rocking.

For those who didn’t want to shell out over 800 thousand for an even daring Kalina, they made sports packages: the exterior is like the charged versions, but the technology is quite ordinary, standard.

If Kalina Sport turned out to be a good, but very niche modification, then Cross became a hit and at some point overtook the sales of the station wagon from which it was made. And they did it according to a simple recipe: they took a road car, raised the ground clearance, altered the interior and hung unpainted plastic panels on the body. The result is no longer a station wagon, but not yet an SUV—something in between. And it turned out well: the car looked smart and drove reliably on the dirt road.
