- Air;
These categories include the following filters.
Fuel:
- Fuel pump mesh;
- Fine fuel filter;
Oil:
- Oil purification filter;
Air:
- Engine air filter;
- Cabin filter;
Each of these filters strictly performs its own functions, and contamination of each of them negatively affects the operation of the area in which it is installed.
Reviews
Mikhail Medved, Moscow, 25 years old: The oil filter is the most important consumable that cannot be skimped on. That's why I buy only expensive analogues and the motor works great for me.
Andrey Tashkovsky, Tomsk, 29 years old: I’ll take the original. I believe that there is no need to deviate from the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Dmitry Podkorytov, Tyumen, 27 years old: I change the oil more often. I don’t worry about the filter, I use what’s available in the store.
Fuel filters Kalina
The fuel filter is responsible for cleaning the fuel before it enters the combustion chamber of the car. The viburnum has two fuel filters, one for coarse fuel purification and the second for fine purification.
Fuel pump mesh
The mesh installed on the fuel pump is called a coarse fuel filter; popularly it is also called a “diaper”. This part largely protects the fuel pump from large particles of debris that end up in the fuel tank with gasoline. Sometimes the mesh becomes dirty, which leads to problems with the car.
It is necessary to change the fuel pump mesh every 50,000 km, but it often happens that the mesh becomes dirty much faster due to the low quality of automobile fuel in our country.

Fuel filter
This filter is located under the bottom of the car near the rear beam, and is secured with a clamp. Its purpose is to clean the fuel from particles of debris that have passed through the mesh of the fuel pump. After the fuel filter, gasoline directly enters the combustion chamber through the nozzles, that is, after the filter, gasoline should come out more frequently without any debris.
You have to change the fine fuel filter a little more often than the fuel pump mesh, namely every 30,000 km, but many car owners advise replacing it before every winter, so as not to have problems with starting the car in cold weather.

Symptoms of clogged Kalina fuel filters
There are several symptoms that clearly indicate that one of the fuel filters is dirty and requires urgent replacement.
Symptoms:
- Loss of engine power (the car does not gain its former speed, the dynamics have worsened);
- Difficulty starting the engine after idle time;
- The car starts and immediately stalls;
- You have to turn the starter for a long time to start the internal combustion engine;
How to check?
You can check the frequency of the fuel system by measuring the fuel pressure in the fuel rail; if the filter is clogged, the pressure will be much lower than the required values (3.8-4.0 kgf/cm). It should also be remembered that low fuel pressure in the system can be caused by an old faulty fuel pump, a broken RTD and injectors leaking fuel.

Air filters
These filters are used in Kalina to clean the air entering the cabin and engine. Both filters are made of paper and do not last very long; their service life depends on where the car is used. If the car is used on gravel or country roads, the service life of these filters is sharply reduced.
Engine air filter
This filter is installed in the engine compartment in a special box and serves to clean the air necessary for the operation of the internal combustion engine, which is subsequently mixed with fuel to form a fuel mixture.
The filter must be replaced every 30,000 km, but if the car is used on dirt roads, it is best to replace this part with a new one a little earlier at 20,000 km.
Symptoms of a clogged engine air filter
When the air filter in a car becomes clogged, the following symptoms appear:
- Engine power is lost;
- Engine starting deteriorates;
- The car engine stalls spontaneously;
- No idle;
If such symptoms appear on your car, you need to check the air filter for frequency; if it is very clogged, and you don’t have a new filter at hand, you can pop it and put it in place. This will be enough to complete the train and buy a new filter.
Replacing the Kalina air filter
- Unscrew the 4 bolts securing the air filter box cover and remove it;
- Install a new filter and close the lid;
Cabin filter
It is installed in front of the stove fan and serves to protect it from debris, as well as to clean the air from harmful gases and various odors. The cabin filter also helps protect air ducts from contamination.
Symptoms of a clogged cabin filter:
- The flow from the air ducts becomes noticeably weaker;
- The stove or air conditioner loses its effectiveness;
- An unpleasant odor appears from the air ducts;
If such malfunctions are detected in your car, you need to clean or replace the cabin filter.

Kalina oil filter
An oil filter is used to clean the oil from debris that has been cut off during engine operation, such as chips or scale. The filter is a cylinder inside, which has a special oil-resistant filter paper, passing through which the oil is cleaned. The filter also has a check valve that retains oil and prevents it from draining from the cylinder head.
The oil filter must be changed every time the engine oil is changed.
Symptoms of a poor quality or clogged oil filter
On Kalina, if the oil filter is clogged, the following malfunctions are possible:
- Loss of oil pressure in the internal combustion engine;
- Noisy operation of the internal combustion engine;
- On 16-valve engines, knocking of hydraulic compensators is possible;
If your car shows such signs of breakdown, you need to change the oil and filter.

Ways to distinguish a fake from an original filter
Installing a fake is fraught with unpredictable serious consequences. Counterfeit can significantly reduce the service life of the motor and even cause it to fail. Therefore, it is important for the driver to be able to identify counterfeit goods before installation on the vehicle.
First of all, you need to inspect the box. It should not have printing or typographical defects, as well as inscriptions with spelling and other errors. The original always has rich colors and clear contours.
Comparison of the rubber seal of original and fake consumables
When inspecting the filter, the first thing you need to pay attention to is the o-ring. For branded consumables, it is made of high-quality rubber with good elasticity. On a fake, the seal becomes dull and may not fit the seat.
Seal falling out of counterfeit product
Next you should inspect the thread. A fake has flaws, such as burrs or rough coils.
Comparison of fake and original threads
After inspecting the threads, attention should be turned to the quality of painting. A fake always has noticeable defects. The original will never be painted with shagreen or interspersed with dust and air bubbles.
Comparison of the smooth painting of the original oil filter and the shagreen paint of the counterfeit
It is important to look inside the filter. With a fake product, you can find a large amount of sealant and debris there. The original must not have traces of corrosion on its internal surfaces.
The insides of the original consumables
Sealant and debris at the bottom of the fake filter
If possible, it is recommended to weigh the consumable. When making a fake, there is a saving on materials. Therefore, the weight of a fake is always less.

Flushing fluid
Some owners of practical Lada Kalina with an engine of 8 and 16 valves are puzzled by the question of the advisability of using a flushing composition before directly replacing the lubricant. Here opinions differ radically, since one category of discussion participants insists that pouring a flushing substance is an unnecessary measure and does not bring any benefit to the motor, but, on the contrary, increases financial costs and wastes time resources. They argue their position by the fact that high-quality oil initially contains a package of additives, the action of which is aimed at cleaning and flushing engine components.
Another category of Lada Kalina owners is convinced that the flushing composition should only be used once and then after purchasing the car. They hint at the fact that in the factory, the initial filling of oil with a mineral base and low quality indicators is carried out.

What to look for when choosing
When purchasing a new filtration device, take the time to inspect the housing. Visually it should be complete and durable. In order not to be disappointed with the new filter, carefully study the seller’s details, as well as the labeling of the products you are buying. As a rule, famous brands “brand” their products with characteristic signs: details, telephone numbers, brand name, series, place of production, etc.
Reviews on the choice of original and non-original filters
Kirill Vyacheslavovich, 42 years old, Petropavlovsk: I bought a VAZ 2108 two years ago, the car is good, no comments. I take care and follow the maintenance schedule. Before visiting a service station, I always purchase consumables. In particular, I always take fuel and oil filters with original serial numbers (Mann, Livny). My comrades buy high-quality analogues, they are cheaper. I believe that there is no need to cheapen consumables. The service life of the power unit directly depends on the quality of lubricant cleaning.
Nikolaevich, 39 years old: I bought a VAZ 2108 car secondhand, got it from the previous owner in good condition. During two years of active operation there were no serious breakdowns, only scheduled maintenance. I don’t buy original filters, I limit myself to high-quality analogues, they are a third cheaper. I always order from the online store, it has been tested over the years, my recommendations to motorists. I believe that there are no fundamental differences between factory products and analogues, with the exception of cost.
Valery, 37 years old: I don’t trust analogues, I always buy factory products and consumables (Fram, Mann, Bosch, Ernst, Livny). I believe that the manufacturer indicated proven and compatible models for the VAZ 2108. I bought third-party products several times, I didn’t like it, the LED lamp on the dashboard burned for a long time.
Nikolai Petrovich, 43 years old: I carry out maintenance on my own. I always buy original consumables, with factory serial numbers, so that the engine lasts longer and breaks down less often. I order spare parts from a specialized store, with a quality guarantee from the manufacturer.
Vasily Ivanovich, 44 years old: bought a VAZ 2108 car second-hand, the previous owner installed non-original imported consumables. I buy similar spare parts, I don’t see any point in switching to the factory version, the lack of originals does not affect the performance of the machine in any way.
Oil filtration element design
Most often, first of all, it is a metal body, less often plastic. The upper part is blank, the lower part has a rubber gasket and holes in a circle. All filtration is carried out naturally inside, due to the main component, often special paper. It performs the main role of cleaning the engine from various debris in the engine. Also inside, in addition to the paper, there are two valves:
Each serves its own purpose. The first prevents lubricant from flowing back into the engine. The second releases pressure when the lubricant has not yet reached operating temperature.

Mahle brand filters have earned a certain authority among consumers. Sold in stores that sell oils. Greater purpose for installation in systems using synthetic-based lubricants. Installation on machines that use mineral and semi-synthetic based lubricants is also possible, but is not recommended by the manufacturer.
The Mann oil filter is considered one of the best in its segment. It has earned a certain reputation among both sellers and consumers due to the excellent quality of the filter element and other filter mechanisms. Mann is a company that produces a huge range of filters for maintenance of various car components. Using the latest production methods, Mann oil filters differ significantly from similar products when working in the engine lubrication process.
Mann filters can guarantee excellent engine protection against various types of accumulations that could get into the engine. The consumer can be sure that between oil changes the engine will run perfectly and the filtration process will be of high quality. You can also note the convenience of filters of this brand when installing and removing during scheduled maintenance and replacing lubricants, both in the engine and in the automatic transmission.
SCT Germany
Another representative of filters from German manufacturers is the SCT company. Oil filters from the German company have won the Russian market due to their reasonable price and great applicability to various brands of engines. Filters are presented in almost every car store on the Russian market.
Also, over time, they have gained a certain positive reputation among motorists for filtering motor oil. Unfortunately, filters of this brand cannot claim leadership in the rating, since it is not uncommon for SCT filters to come out before the lubricant change period. Still, the filter is located practically in the cheapest segment.
Finwhale
Finwhale filters are representatives of German products. In addition to filters, the company supplies a huge number of parts for a wide variety of car brands. Finwhale does not produce spare parts in the low price segment. The quality of the products is slightly above average, while paying off with the excellent quality of all products. It is possible to protect yourself from counterfeit products if there is a red hologram with a picture of a whale on the product box and gray, light blue and dark blue patterns on the spare parts box. Finwhale oil filters have earned a positive reputation among both motorists and sellers. It is considered a confident “average” among oil filters. According to customer reviews, the filters have some advantages:
- After passing 10,000 km with standard maintenance, the filter rubber does not change its properties and looks the same as straight from the store.
- Excellent engine oil filtration performance unlike other oil filters (filters use superior quality paper)
