The Lada Granta is a budget front-wheel drive car that was developed on the basis of the Lada Kalina. Sales of the car began at the end of December 2011. Currently, 5 types of engines are installed on Lada Granta/Kalina 2:
- VAZ-11183-50 (82 hp)
- VAZ-11186 (87 hp)
- VAZ-21126 (98 hp)
- VAZ-21127 (106 hp)
- VAZ 21126-77 (120 hp)
Despite this diversity, the volume of all engines is the same and is 1.6 liters.
About modern VAZ engines
The manufacturer offers a choice of two 8 valve engines :
- VAZ-11183-50 (82 hp) is a modified VAZ-2111 engine, as a result of which environmental performance has increased, the engine has become more reliable and less capricious. It also has the advantage of elasticity and traction. Disadvantages include periodic valve adjustments and noisy engine operation. If the timing belt breaks, the valve does not bend.
- VAZ-11186 (87 hp) is a modified VAZ-21114 engine, as a result of which it was possible to reduce noise and gasoline consumption. Environmental friendliness has improved and power has increased noticeably. Disadvantages: compared to the VAZ-11183, this engine has a shorter service life. When the timing belt breaks, the valves bend.
16 valve engines :
- VAZ-21126 (98 hp) is a continuation of the VAZ-21124 engine and is currently one of the most advanced domestic engines. Disadvantage: valve bends when the timing belt breaks.
- VAZ-21127 (106 hp) is a modified VAZ-21126 engine. In comparison, the engine has become more torquey at the bottom, the changes are minor, but noticeable. The disadvantages include bending of the valves when the timing belt breaks.
Description of the 3s fse motor device
The cylinder-piston group of the 3S FSE internal combustion engine is strengthened. It ensures trouble-free operation of the entire engine if compression increases. Fuel is supplied via a mechanical high-pressure fuel pump (HPF).
Attention! The production standards produced by the high pressure pump are 120 bar.
The exhaust gas recirculation system was used for the first time on the 3S FSE engine. 40 percent of exhaust gases are returned back to the system. Thanks to this process, the amount of pollutants released into the atmosphere has been reduced.
The cylinder block is cast from cast iron. The diameter of one cylinder is 86 mm and the piston stroke is also equal to this number. The cylinder head of an internal combustion engine is made of duralumin alloy. At high temperatures it tends to deform.
There are two camshafts inside the cylinder head. And the timing structure as a whole is equipped with a VVTi system. This system changes the phases of the gas distribution on the intake manifold. The gas distribution system is driven by a toothed belt.
Experienced mechanics recommend changing the timing belt once every 100 thousand kilometers. Thermal valve clearances must be adjusted manually by the car owner. The procedure is done using washers. They are placed between the cams and shaft pushers.
The pan and other parts of the engine are secured with specific bolts and nuts, which makes it difficult to repair the engine “on the knee”. Therefore, the engine received a lot of negative reviews. To drain the lubricant from the engine, it was necessary to unscrew the bolts on the pan. And this cost the car owner a lot of effort and searching for special keys and sockets for removal in a garage.
The crankshaft consists of five bearings. Protected by rubber seals that prevent lubricant leakage. The maximum temperature at which the crankshaft operates is 80 degrees Celsius.
Cooling in the engine system is forced. This is done using a special pump. Up to 5.7 liters of coolant is poured into it. But the amount of fluid varies on different cars, since in most cases it depends on the type of gearbox.
The main feature of the engine is the adjustment of fuel saturation with air and oil. For example, at low or idle speeds the mixture entering the combustion chamber is lean. This helps save fuel. When the load on the 3S FSE engine increases, the mixture becomes richer accordingly.

The injector consists of a rack and nozzles. The latter have been successfully improved by Toyota. They can operate under high compression. The ignition is equipped with coils that are located in spark plug wells.

Chassis
If we talk about the suspension of the VAZ-2192, then everything here has also been updated. But only in relation to the first “Kalina”, because the whole system migrated to the second generation of the car from the “Grants” already produced at that time. Although when developing the suspension for the same “Grant” the chassis of the old “Kalina” was taken as a basis, it still underwent thorough modifications. Firstly, the shock absorber settings were changed and springs of increased rigidity were installed. Secondly, the anti-roll bars have also undergone changes in favor of increasing their thickness. In addition, as mentioned above, the VAZ-2192, the technical characteristics of which are quite acceptable for the roads of the post-Soviet countries, received a negative camber angle.

But still, if you compare the new generation of Kalina with the old one, you can see how hard the engineers worked to make Kalina 2 more attractive and similar to a foreign car. How is Kalina 2 controlled?
There is an opinion among people that the second “Kalina” can be compared in terms of handling with the good old “Eight” - the steering is responsive, and the car “stands” perfectly both on high-speed straights and on winding roads. The energy intensity has not been affected in any way - in front of deep holes and potholes, you don’t even have to try to brake hard, because the car “flies” over them with enviable agility.
In addition, if during a turn the wheel hits an unplanned hole or pothole, the updated Kalina does not lose control and calmly continues moving along the given trajectory. Based on this, we can conclude that the suspension and steering work at their best! The only “dirty thing” that the VAZ “berry” does not like is small cracks and micro-irregularities. In them, the car shudders and shakes every now and then. But still, such a drawback is not very noticeable, and it can be corrected by installing less hard tires.
Updated prioromotor with index 21127
Togliatti decided to update the existing engine 21126 and add a little fire to it - now Kalina 2 with such a “heart” will have a power of 106 horsepower, with a maximum torque of 150 N*m. This was achieved by adding different intake modes - at low speeds the air passes through a long channel, at high speeds through a short one. The engine also has a new absolute pressure sensor and updated software.
True, as with everything, there are some disadvantages - when the timing belt breaks, the valves wrinkle and the connecting rod and piston group of parts suffers.
Salon and appearance
As for the sound insulation of the cabin, it has risen to a new level, and the inside of the car has become much quieter. True, cheap trim levels are not equipped with rear wheel arch liners, which forces passengers sitting in the second row of seats to hear absolutely all the clicks of the tires about the unevenness of the road. But, in general, the result is already more pleasant than on the previous version of the car. It is also worth noting the good interior trim, albeit plastic, but of a higher quality. The multimedia system allows you to use a USB drive and an AUX connector right from the factory, and that says a lot. The seats have become more comfortable, and the overall comfort of the cabin has increased thanks to a complete redesign.
There is no shame in the appearance of the car - any foreign car would be the envy of a domestically assembled beauty. But there is no need to say unnecessary words, because everything is already visible from the photo. Pleasant streamlined shapes, a body that, despite the high ground clearance, does not seem raised - all this makes the car pleasing to the eye.
