Lada Kalina Cross was officially presented at the September Motor Show in Moscow.
Immediately after the official presentation, the car was supposed to appear in dealership centers in Russia. The new product was presented personally by AvtoVAZ General Director Bo Andersson. What is this new masterpiece of the domestic automobile industry, how does it differ from previous products, and how can it attract the attention of the Russian consumer?

What does the manufacturer testify to?

The fuel tank for Lada Kalina 2nd generation can be made of metal or a plastic product. The regulatory tank volume, which the manufacturer describes in its manual, is 50 liters. This figure would be a useless figure if owners were not aware of the actual fuel consumption.

Here the manufacturer claims a figure varying from 6.7 liters to 7.8 liters. The indicated “run” of values ​​is directly influenced by factors such as:

• type of motor used;
• installed transmission option;
• driving mode;
• level of equipment (consumption increases in more expensive versions due to the use of a greater number of auxiliary comfort systems);
• driving style (taken into account by the owners themselves).

By the way, the manufacturer regulates the use of only 95 gasoline for all types of Lada Kalina units.

Today there is no owner who would not be “scared” by increased fuel consumption. For small cars in the budget category, to which Kalina actually belongs, the psychological barrier appears at around 10 liters per “hundred”. After this, the owner needs to contact the service to find out the reasons for such an excess from the manufacturer’s standards.

Real car clearance measurements

Let's determine the ground clearance without applying the previously specified regulatory load. How to do it? Let's use a tape measure. We summarize the results of real measurements in a table.

An interesting experiment was carried out, the purpose of which was to check the veracity of the ratio of the ground clearance of the Lada Kalina in its usual version in comparison with the “Cross” version. For this purpose, 4 measurements were performed. The ground clearance was measured from the road surface to the side sill with the preliminary installation of a jack. For the purity of the experiment, it was necessary to place both cars in identical conditions. Both Kalinas were presented for testing with empty interiors and luggage compartments, as well as with a minimum of fuel in the tanks.

The regular version of the Kalina was shod with 14-inch radial tires of 175 width and 55 profile. The “cross” variation received 15-inch tires, the width and profile dimensions of which were respectively “195x55”.

The first to be measured was the Lada Kalina 2 in its standard version. In the no-load state, the ground clearance reached 198 mm. During the measurements, the “cross” version received a ground clearance of 217 mm.

At the next stage, 4 people were seated in the test cars one by one. When loaded, a regular station wagon gave a ground clearance of 170 mm. When Kalina Cross was loaded, the clearance level dropped to 192 mm. As a result, the additional weight managed to lower the ground clearance of the regular version by 28 mm, and the Cross version by 25 mm. Here, a modified suspension and wheels with a larger diameter played a role.

Changes to the Kalina Cross suspension

Depending on how loaded the car is, ground clearance varies from 208 mm (completely empty) to 188 mm (fully loaded). One way or another, progress in this direction is obvious. The crossover's ground clearance is 2.3 cm higher than that of the station wagon. This begs the question: how did the domestic auto industry manage to achieve such significant figures? This really required making a lot of changes: -original gas-filled shock absorbers were installed; - suspension elements have been reconfigured; -The location of the spring supports has been changed. Thus, the new chassis made it possible to achieve an increase of 16 mm. The remaining 7 mm were gained thanks to alloy wheels (tires 195/55R15, diameter 15). The wide tires installed in the new model also played an important role. They increased the track of the front and rear wheels by 4 mm. This, in turn, forced the designers to reduce the steering rack travel by 3.6 mm and increase the turning radius to 5.5 meters. For comparison, for the Lada Kalina station wagon this figure is 5.2 meters.

Lada Kalina Cross will pleasantly surprise its buyer with elegant moldings with the Cross inscription on the side doors, black plastic trims installed on the sills, stylish metal inserts on the bumpers, roof rails and almost off-road ground clearance. What is missing? Alas, no matter how much all-wheel drive is requested in such a kit, the AvtoVAZ crossover can only boast of front-wheel drive.

It’s just that the “Kalina” station wagon seemed somewhat pensioner-like, despite the 16-valve engine. And something tells us: buyers will look for peace of mind, coziness and comfort in cars from other automakers.

Kalina, even with the Cross prefix, is not the ease of being, no matter how much the orange decor in the cabin screams about it. Kalina is a robe.

It is immediately noticeable that the manufacturer has increased the ground clearance - the car has become taller. AvtoVAZ decided that the car should fully correspond to the crossover. The distance between the wheels has also increased - this is how the designers gave the car a resemblance to full-size crossovers.

Western manufacturers, when restyling their cars, change all body elements. But AvtoVAZ acted differently. You won't be able to see new optics or a different radiator grille here. Domestic designers have changed the appearance of the new crossover using plastic linings. The same thing could be seen on other models.

Plastic trims are applied to the wheel arches, installed on the doors, window dividers and on the rear bumper. On the back door you can see the model name – Cross. Additional changes include larger roof rails along the entire length.

What is the ground clearance of our Lada Vesta?

According to the manufacturer, Vesta’s ground clearance is at least 178mm.

The debate is still ongoing, and it began during its first presentation as a special Russian sedan with front-wheel drive. A good place to start is to understand what the definition of the term we are about to explore is.

Definition of the term

Vesta's ground clearance allows you not to be afraid of most curbs.

Ground clearance refers to the distance from the surface of the ground to the lowest protruding point of the car. The higher this indicator, the higher the vehicle’s cross-country ability and driving performance, for example, stability on the highway. What about this indicator for the subject of our consideration?

Lada Vesta is a special development, the brainchild of AvtoVAZ engineers who did their best. For faster, painless adaptation to Russian roads, the car turned out to be quite tall.

According to the documents, its height above the road has the following indicators:

• 171 millimeters - to the engine sump;
• 144 millimeters - under the engine mudguards.

What does a full load include?

There is enough ground clearance to overcome fields.

The definition of full load means that we are talking about the maximum permissible weight of a loaded vehicle, including the driver, passengers, and transported cargo.

In our case, the difference between the total and curb weight will be as much as 400 kilograms for Vesta. If we talk about pure ground clearance, it will increase slightly if there is only a driver and a passenger sitting next to you in the car.

According to the documents, it turns out that ground clearance can increase significantly in this case, namely:

• 190 millimeters – to the engine sump;
• 230 millimeters – to the beginning of the front bumper overhang.

These indicators are especially pleasing, since now our Vesta doesn’t care about high edges or curbs. In practice, it is capable of overcoming fairly high obstacles if it is not particularly loaded. Measurement indicators indicate various positive aspects that can only benefit motorists.

Why do some controversial issues arise?

Ground clearance parameters depend on the wheel size.

The discrepancies may be caused by another factor. Ideally, 171 millimeters, even at maximum load, can be achieved when Vesta is shod with 16-inch wheels. At size fifteen, this figure will be lowered to 165 and 138 millimeters, respectively, to the engine mudguard.

Lada Vesta is not inferior to some of its foreign counterparts. We'll talk about this feature a little later. Now is the time to analyze the domestic market. Let's take a look and compare the ground clearance with other AvtoVAZ models.

Against the background of the constant appearance of new cars on the world market, the Lada Vesta of the 2015 model year is not such a new product. However, it can still be considered the discovery of the Russian car market thanks to its very modern appearance and well-thought-out technical “stuffing”. The sedan's exterior was designed by ex-Mercedes-Benz and Volvo designer Steve Mattin, and was among the first people lucky enough to sit in it.

The raised cross-country hatchback Lada Xray, which AvtoVAZ dubbed a crossover for advertising purposes, is called by many the highest quality model of the domestic manufacturer, and there is indeed reason for this. Firstly, there is an abundance of high quality imported parts, and secondly, this car has decent ground clearance and a proprietary 1.8-liter engine.

Cars nowadays don't work on anything. There are even hydrogen ones that literally “live” on fuel cells. Water is, of course, good and incredibly environmentally friendly, but it is still painfully unpopular and expensive to implement. Is it compressed natural gas or, as it is also called, methane in a cylinder, like the new version of Lada Vesta CNG (Compressed Natural Gas)! A gas sedan is cheaper.

Some desperate owners resort to an unwanted experiment to determine how many liters the tank is maximum. They empty the container in natural mode almost to zero. This is very fraught with failure of this complex and expensive component.

After running out of fuel, the Lada Kalina 2 engine stalls and requires a new portion. In such a situation, owners fill the tank with the maximum possible volume. Some subjects claim that they were able to fill the maximum volume of the gas tank with 50 liters, and then add another 5 liters. This excess fuel is located in the filler pipe. But the maximum speed in this configuration is higher; the Cross 1.6 AMT can travel at a maximum speed of up to 178 km/h.

Compared to the station wagon, the ground clearance of the Lada Cross is increased by 2.3 centimeters and is 208 mm (without load). With a body length of 4.104 m, Kalina’s wheelbase is 2476 mm, and the car’s height is 1.7 m.

Real Driver Measurements

But how to determine the real clearance of a Lada without a full load? Real measurements with a tape measure (without load) show the following results.

A special experiment was carried out. Its essence is to compare the veracity of the clearance ratio of a regular Lada and a Cross. To achieve this, four subjective measurements were made. The distance was measured from the road to the side threshold, under which the jack is placed.

To conduct the experiment, the cars were placed in the same conditions. Both cars had an empty interior, an unfilled trunk and the same minimum amount of fuel in the tank. The standard Lada station wagon was equipped with radial tires with a width of 175 mm, a profile of 55% and a seat diameter of 14 inches. The cross version is shod with tires with a width of 195, a profile of 55 and a diameter of 15.

First, we measured the ground clearance of a regular Lada Kalina station wagon without load. The resulting value is 198 mm. Then we got 217 mm as a result of a similar measurement on Kalina Cross. Before the second measurements, four people were asked to sit in the cars one by one. A loaded regular station wagon gave a result of 170 mm. After loading, the clearance of Kalina Cross was 192 mm.

Lada Kalina is one of the most practical and best-selling creations of AvtoVAZ. The model enjoyed considerable popularity, thanks, first of all, to its cost and adaptability to the realities of Russian roads. This largely applies to Kalina’s ground clearance. When it began production in 2004, the ground clearance of the Lada Kalina was 160 millimeters - one might say, the golden mean among passenger cars. The technical characteristics of the car are quite acceptable considering the engine. So, the car accelerates to 100 km in just 13 seconds. This is a good time for a domestic crossover. With this engine, the maximum possible speed is 165 km/h. In the combined cycle, fuel consumption is only 7 liters. for every hundred kilometers driven.

Later, configurations with sixteen-valve units with 106 hp appeared. They only work with the AMT gearbox.

NOT EXPENSIVE AT ALL

At the end of January, when we conducted this test, the station wagon closest to it in terms of equipment with a manual transmission and the same engine cost 427,800 rubles. And for the Cross, dealers asked 451,000 rubles. The difference is about 23 thousand. Great offer! After all, “Cross” means large light alloy wheels, an off-road body kit, increased ground clearance, a modified suspension, a short main gear in the transmission and a more pleasant interior. It is promised that the Cross will soon appear with a 16-valve engine, more powerful, and another 10 thousand more expensive. It's also tempting.

Against this background, the price of the test "Kalina" station wagon seems inadequate - 523,800 rubles. But it’s “automatic”! And the “Lux” package comes with a stabilization system. Look through the price lists: foreign cars of this class with automatic transmission, climate control and other benefits are significantly more expensive.

And now - away with the economy! Three days behind the wheel of the new Kalina - and even the author, who is “well over forty”, prefers the youth model. That is, “Cross”. All-terrain capability, non-standard appearance, smart suspension. Drive, finally!

It’s just that the “Kalina” station wagon seemed somewhat pensioner-like, despite the 16-valve engine. And something tells us: buyers will look for peace of mind, coziness and comfort in cars from other automakers.

Rework by replacement

This option seems obvious: the speedometer and tachometer can be left in place, and the computer display can be replaced. In reality, such a replacement is difficult to perform. Is Lada Kalina Cross a second generation car?

The well-known Lada Kalina brand is a passenger car produced by AvtoVAZ, produced since November 2004.

The model is one of the ten most popular cars in Russia; it is produced not only in Togliatti, but also at the automobile plant in Ust-Kamenogorsk (Kazakhstan).

Assembly of the first generation Kalina was carried out until the spring of 2013; the car was produced in hatchback, sedan and station wagon bodies.

In May of the same 2013, a new project Lada Kalina 2 was launched into series, but this model was already produced in only two body styles - station wagon and hatchback.

Dynamic characteristics of Lada Kalina Cross

The difference between the new product and the hatchback was the engine with the index 21127 and a robotic gearbox, installed instead of the previous 21126. In this configuration, instead of the 4AT gearbox, they began to use the 5AMT gearbox. The other two engine options remained the same - the 106-horsepower 16-valve 21127 and the good old 8-valve 11186, developing 87 hp. Both of the latter options are equipped with manual transmissions.

In the minimum configuration, 87 “horses” accelerate the car to 100 km/h in 12.2 seconds. A 106-horsepower engine with a manual transmission allows you to do this in 10.8 seconds. The same power unit with a robotic gearbox is somewhat behind other configurations and accelerates the car to 100 km/h in 13.1 seconds. The maximum speed ranges from 165 to 178 km/h, which is quite enough for a car with a similar body and high ground clearance.

Gas tank volume

However, many car owners very often ask this question - why doesn’t the gas tank contain all 50 liters?!

The answer to this question is quite simple! For Lada Kalina cars of any modification, the engine filling volume is about 43-45 liters, and 50 liters is an indicator of the total volume, since the remaining 4-5 liters are system fuel, and figures of 1-2 liters may be error figures in the manufacture of the gas tank. The gas tank on the station wagon is the same.

It should be remembered that the volume of liquid can vary depending on ambient pressure and temperature. Plus 2 liters in the fuel line - this is if the tank is completely dry. But if instead of 50 liters you were filled with 55, then this is already a reason to doubt the correct operation of the “release mechanism” at the fuel station.

For owners of Lada Kalina, such a stated indicator as the maximum tank capacity is a purely subjective value. For some Lada Kalina 2 owners, the 50-liter gas tank volume is quite sufficient, but for others, on the contrary, it is not enough. How long can this car travel on one full tank? Here, opinions also differ, because many claim that they have reached a mileage of 700 km, while others are limited to around 500 km. Let us repeat that for normal operating conditions of Kalina, this tank volume is sufficient.
