Lada C-Cross

Lada S-Cross was created on the VAZ Lada-B platform, based on the Renault Megane platform, the rear suspension of which was replaced with AvtoVAZ’s own design.

This car has many external differences from the Lada XRay. First of all, it is sleeker, and off-road driving is not the first thing that comes to mind when evaluating the exterior. The design of the front of the car is more likely associated with a sedan, but the side and rear views are quite consistent with a crossover.

Choosing a Hyundai Greta or Kia X Line based on technical characteristics is the most interesting thing. The cars are fundamentally different in suspension, dynamics, engines and transmissions.

It cannot be any other way when it comes to the classic city hatchback and crossover. Car creators were counting on different target audiences and ways of using their creations.

Dimensions

The dimensions of X Line at first glance are not very different from Gretta. Its length is 4240 mm versus 4270 mm for the crossover, wheelbase is 1750 mm versus 1780 mm, height is 1535 mm versus 1665 mm for its competitor.

It is this last indicator that creates a fundamentally different picture before the eyes of motorists. Kia is squat, although it is considered a higher representative of its class. It doesn't quite reach the level of a city SUV, but it handles perfectly thanks to its streamlined shape.

The trunk of the station wagon is also inferior in volume, which is only 390 liters, while that of the Crete is 402 liters. It is difficult to say how useful the difference in use will be, because the size that a crossover has is often not enough for a large family.

For long trips you have to equip an additional luggage compartment on the roof. The same trick can be done with a hatchback, so the victory is relative.

But the situation with ground clearance is interesting. In Hyundai, the ground clearance is 190 mm, which is enough for a comfortable ride in the city and far beyond its borders. In the first modifications of Kia, the ground clearance was only 170 mm, not bad for the city, but definitely not comparable to a crossover.

But the updated models from 2022 are more seriously elevated. The ground clearance in them is 195 mm, even exceeding the characteristics of the competitor.

Engines

Kia installs 2 options of gasoline engines in the hatchback: 1.4 and 1.6 liters and 100 and 123 hp. respectively. Both engines have 4 cylinders and 16 valves. They meet modern standards and can even compete for leadership with competitors, but in their class, and not against a Korean crossover.

Hyundai offers motorists 3 engine options:

  • Volume 1.6 and power 121 hp.
  • Volume 1.6 l and power 123 hp.
  • Volume 2 liters and power 149 hp.

In general, Koreans install reliable units in their cars, so that with timely maintenance, a crossover and a hatchback will last the same long time.

Transmissions

There are no surprises here on either side. Manufacturers have taken care of the availability of 6-speed automatic and manual transmissions on the crossover and hatchback. The only difference is that the Rio has only front-wheel drive, while Cretas also have all-wheel drive.

There are no reliability issues with any of the options. The boxes last a long time and require almost no maintenance. It is recommended to change fluids every 30-60 thousand kilometers, depending on driving style.

Suspension

Choosing between the Kia Rio X Line or Creta based on the suspension is also interesting. On the one hand, in any case it will be quite tough; in budget cars it’s no different. But Hyundai gave buyers a choice.

If front-wheel drive models are equipped with a dependent torsion beam, then all-wheel drive models are equipped with an independent linkage beam. It softens the ride on bad roads, making the ride smooth and confident.

The Kia's suspension is completely unsuitable for off-road driving. This is an absolutely city car and without asphalt, people sitting inside will feel all the bumps.

Accept that the Korean hatchback's competition with crossovers is only at the level of advertising promises. But in fact, this is still the same family station wagon, only slightly raised.

Which is better to choose?

Choosing a car in this case will not be as simple as it might seem at first glance. After all, despite the fact that the Kia Seltos, the release date of which in Russia is already known and is scheduled for March 2022, many details are already known about this crossover

Before its appearance on sale, it had already managed to attract the attention of many car enthusiasts due to its low cost with the expected excellent quality, a wealth of equipment, the presence of powerful engines and stylish external and internal design. The second car is of interest to lovers of original and unusual design, to those people who want to be noticeable on the road. In addition, a Russian car is an ideal option if you have a very modest budget or want to save money. True, you shouldn’t expect any special dynamics from it. The quality of the variator is also a concern. But even in the case of the Korean, those who want to be always and completely confident in the performance of their transmission should not purchase versions with a CVT or robot. These units require constant attention and quality maintenance. By the way, maintaining a Russian will save a lot of money, whereas if you choose a foreigner, it will be more expensive, but quite affordable even for people with not very large incomes.

Both models have in common a 106-horsepower engine from the VAZ-21129 series. This is a unit that has long been time-tested, with sixteen valves, four cylinders, and a distributed fuel injection complex. Of course, its power is not huge, but for a small hatchback and class B sedan it is perfect.

However, if Vesta has exhausted its options, then X Ray is also ready to offer a couple more current units. And this is a 110-horsepower engine, having the same volume of 1.6 liters, but at the same time developed by the Renault-Nissan Alliance. For many, this option will be slightly preferable, since the unit is more economical, more dynamic, and the cutoff is located a little higher.

However, the top ones included not an imported engine at all, but, again, a domestic one. And this is a 1.8-liter engine from the VAZ-21179 serial line. It doesn’t have any special design, but this model has 122 hp. With. and 6000 rpm. Of course, such a motor makes it possible for greater agility, which, however, is concealed by a five-speed robot that comes paired with the unit.

So, as you can see, when comparing X Ray and Lada Vesta, in this case the first model wins.

The interior of the Lada XRAY crossover is comfortable and rational

The interior is rich, including built-in options. The speed sensor now has a large size, and a fuel scale and tachometer will be located on its sides. Perhaps more expensive assemblies will be pleased with a multimedia screen on the central panel. Under it, air conditioning and climate control will fit comfortably and organically.

The central panel in the Priora is still equipped with an analog clock. But this panel has its own advantage: you can install any radio, and the most expensive configuration generally comes with an advanced audio system with a navigator. The same thing, of course, is in the X Ray, but all the zest with a good radio is lost after the factory built-in audio systems.

Appearance of Concept and serial developments of Lada

VAZ can launch a new SUV called X-Ray into series only if there is a certain chance of success. In the meantime, the Cross projects from the Russian concern were doomed to failure. Too high a price ruins Russian-made pseudo jeeps, but in the Lada X Ray you can find many beautiful aspects that can be included in the series:

The developments of X Ray have already been distributed among new VAZ projects being implemented. The Russian Concept actually completely lost faith in mass production for a number of reasons. However, these ornate curves in the shape of the letter “X”, together with the 15-inch wheels that come as standard, and the impressive ground clearance, visually make the car shorter, and not everyone likes it. However, one cannot help but admit that the muscular body shapes, feet, headlights, chrome and trims look very advantageous.

As a result, they got a pretty and moderately correct image, which, on the one hand, does not have any features that break out of the overall picture, and on the other, never gets boring. A wide radiator grille, sharpened headlights, short overhangs and a line of side glazing extending upwards combine perfectly with branded lining on the front fenders and nice wheels.

In general, it is difficult to say which looks better externally - the Lada X-Ray or the Kia Rio, because everyone has different tastes.

Car appearance

Design is an exclusively subjective concept, but there are always some general principles embedded in the head of each of us. For example, everyone confidently divides design into modern and “antediluvian”. For some, modern design is when most passersby open their mouths and point at the car, while for others it is something extraordinary (a la Nissan Juke). Therefore, we ask you not to strictly judge the author’s opinion, because it may differ from yours - and this is normal.

The appearance of the Lada XRay will surely appeal to many car enthusiasts. This is probably due to the wow effect of what the domestic auto industry is capable of. And indeed, this design is a breakthrough in our automotive industry. Previously, you could always say with confidence “oh, this is another modified Lada” (even if there is no badge). With the latest new products, everything is much more interesting - without seeing the XRay and Vesta bodies on the Internet and on the pages of magazines, you might think that this is some new product of the foreign automobile industry. Here, let's take a closer look - Lada look like ?

  • Mitsubishi ASX – from a distance you can’t even tell it apart. Except for the radiator grille and the height of the rear lights. Up close, of course, you will find a lot of differences, but the vector of the ASX and X-Ray exterior lies in the same direction. Another thing is that the Japanese does not surprise anyone in appearance, but such a look for Lada is something out of the ordinary.
  • Nissan Juke. The expressiveness of the exterior is what catches the attention of both models. The Dzhukovsky puffiness and the signature Ladovsky “X” clearly highlight the wings and wheel arches, and the height of the “muzzle” with an abundance of optics creates an impressive (but, according to about half of the people, dubious) appearance.
  • Renault Sandero Stepway - if you put it next to the Lada, you can see its smaller copy. What will we get if we reduce XRay even by 5%? – that’s right: hatchback! And on the hatch, puddles, mud and snow are no longer “knee-deep” - but this is a separate issue that does not concern the appearance. As a result: the appearance of the French and the Russian are similar, but the scales are different (it seems that this can be applied not only in the context of cars).

There is an opinion that the interior of the Lada X-Ray was created under the influence of the same KIA Rio. The appearance of the XRAY interior is more swift and aggressive. The 3-spoke steering wheel, along with the spectacular dashboard wells, literally “charges” you with energy and the desire to drive actively.

In addition, the design of the dashboard can’t be faulted either. Large panels with smooth but expressive transitions, elongated air deflectors and a laconic center console look very good. Although not everyone likes the different textures of plastic. The seats are not bad, but in the basic versions the lumbar support is too low, which creates some inconvenience.

The Rio's front seats are no worse than those of its competitor, but the rear sofa is not very comfortable, primarily because it is too low. However, it is quite possible to go there.

Chassis and ground clearance

Ground clearance and chassis are almost the first parameters that domestic buyers pay attention to when comparing/selecting cars. It’s hard to deal with the lack of roads, so you have to choose those cars that can go through potholes and unmarked speed bumps. The braking system is also important: an unforeseen incident can happen on the road, and a brake pedal driven into the floor should cause quick and complete braking.

Ground clearance of Lada X-Ray is 195 mm, Lada Priora is 170 mm (before restyling – 165). Quite acceptable and good performance for those cars that go on Russian roads. However, a lot depends on the suspension. On the Priora, it is “standard” for AvtoVAZ products, and takes impacts well from potholes on the road. X-Ray owners praise their cars, noting their good ability to overcome obstacles and the “non-loose”, strong suspension.

In terms of characteristics, the two cars are all the same. There are ventilated disc brakes at the front, independent spring suspension, and drum brakes and semi-independent spring suspension at the rear. It is very sad that there are drum brakes at the rear - they are not only more fragile than disc brakes, but also less effective when braking. The fact that drum brakes exist can be called a strong disadvantage of these cars.

With the X-Ray concept, the developers made it clear that this model even aspires to participate in racing. In this regard, the event in Moscow was attended by the country's champion in circular racing in the Touring Light league, Dmitry Bragin. Ground clearance Lada X-Ray

This point is the main one in the arguments of supporters that the domestic model is a full-fledged SUV. Indeed, the declared ground clearance of 195 mm is impressive, especially since not every modern SUV can boast of a similar result. In addition, small body overhangs are given as additional arguments - 830 mm for the front and 742 mm for the stern. The approach and departure angles are also quite large - 21° and 34°, respectively. Such indicators, theoretically, guarantee the possibility of confident driving over rough terrain.

However, for cars from AvtoVAZ, having high ground clearance is the rule rather than the exception. The same Grants, with a ground clearance of 160 mm, are not far behind many “full-fledged crossovers” such as the Nissan Juke, in which this figure ranges from 170 to 180 mm, for example. Therefore, it is incorrect to evaluate X-Ray solely on this parameter.

Comfort and safety systems

The crossover received top-end technology. Engineers installed modern systems, which are especially noticeable in the maximum configuration. The list of available functions includes personal settings for the dashboard, cruise control, traffic sign tracking, heating, tow bar, multimedia with a 9.2-inch screen. The cross hatch looks more modest. The list included fog lights, four parking sensors, an assistant for lifting and starting, front airbags, directional stability, and mounts for child seats.

Let's sum it up

In recent years, many journalists from respected publications have begun to actively praise domestic manufacturers for their growth and development. But the lack of release of the planned Jeep says a lot. While the Lada X-Ray remains at the concept stage, we can judge the insufficient production capacity at AvtoVAZ. After all, otherwise the company would have launched the car into series long ago and would have received thousands of additional sales.

The current situation in the car market should be to the advantage of domestic manufacturers. But in practice it turns out that the rise in the dollar and the rise in prices for foreign cars only suppresses AvtoVAZ. Less and less quality cars are being sent for test drives, and people are publishing less and less happy reviews about buying cars. Let's hope that X Ray will completely change the situation for the brand after its release.

Until recently, the phrase “Lada crossovers” evoked a sarcastic grin from most motorists - Nivas of various modifications, a relic of the Soviet automobile industry, even if they were worthy of the title of SUV, could only be classified as crossovers in a nightmare.

Car dealerships are selling off the remains of Priora, offering good discounts on the latest batches. Today, the price of the Lada Priora starts at 244,900 rubles (for the minimum configuration) and ends at 342,400 rubles (maximum configuration). The price of X-Ray (X-RAY), unlike the Priora, remains higher: from 629,900 rubles to 760,900 rubles. It is important to note that the X has more types of configurations.

But they organize promotions and give discounts for the brand new X Ray, because new VAZ cars are following on its heels: for example, the same Vesta Cross.
