German masters were interested in changing the Soviet Niva. So in 1983, based on this SUV, Deutsche Lada Automobil GmbH, which was the official importer of these cars, introduced a convertible, which completely lacked side pillars and roof strength elements. But a tubular frame appeared, with which they decided to strengthen the body.

The new version has front seats with head restraints, enhanced lateral seat support and seat belts. Additionally, plastic fender extensions were used, which were painted in the color of the car and gave it a more impressive look.

This is a newly modified Niva car, which was transformed by specialists from Bronto. The basis of the transport was the bridges and frame of the UAZ-3151, but the body was used from the VAZ-21213. The first thing that catches your eye is the huge pneumatic wheels, which allow this vehicle to move on low-traffic soils, which is where the name “March” comes from, meaning “swamp” in French. The gearbox, engine and transfer case still remain from the Niva in this seriously updated SUV.

Domestic armored car

Laura was released in episodes 1958, 19321-03 and 1958-1. The first of them has four driving wheels, a VAZ 2123 engine, consumes fuel with an octane rating of at least 95. The length of the car is 4.048 m, width - 1.786 m, height - 1.652 m, wheelbase - 2.450 m (from Niva Chevrolet). The car can accommodate 3-5 people, including the driver, and the load capacity is 400 kg. The interior is quite comfortable, the car has high visibility for the crew, and it is possible to load through an armored hatch with a remote-controlled lock. For protection, modern materials are used, which provide minimal load on the suspension (it is believed that the car has an additional weight of 200-300 kg).

The technical characteristics of the car are such that it fits the second or third class of protection according to GOST R 50963-96. This means that before installing armor on the vehicle, the metal sheets were tested through fire from certain types of weapons, the fuel tanks are resistant to fires and explosions from small arms bullets and high-explosive or fragmentation grenades. A Niva of this class can protect against AKM when fired from five meters (plus or minus ten centimeters), both body elements and glass are armored.

Laura armored series 19321-03 has Niva 21214 as a base with increased ground clearance and all-wheel drive. The model is produced with reinforced sills and side members, which provides high structural rigidity. The door for the crew is made large enough, which allows you to quickly leave the car and get into it, the car windows do not open, like on the Laura 1958, but have special plugs, the car is equipped with air conditioning. The car is tall, with excellent off-road capability. The body is covered with a plastic coating, which provides corrosion resistance, good appearance and maintainability after an accident.

The front window of the Niva Laura 19321-01 is curved, gives good visibility, and there is a monitoring system for what is behind the car. The technical characteristics of the car are as follows:

  • length 4.23 m, width 1.68 meters, height 1.91 m;
  • capacity - 3-5 people;
  • load capacity - 0.55 tons;
  • protection class - 2 or 3 according to GOST No. 50963-96;

Niva Laura series 1958-01 has a wheelbase increased by 51 cm, a voluminous cargo compartment, an increased roof height, as well as special shock absorbers and springs, reinforced side members and sills. It is all-wheel drive, has a plastic casing with good isothermal properties, and runs on A95 gasoline and higher. Protection class - second or third according to GOSTs R 51136-98 and R 50963-96, load capacity - 0.4 tons. The vehicle can carry a crew of 3-5 people, has a length of 4.56 m, a height of 1.915 m, a width of 1.786 m, and a base of 2.45 m (from Niva Chevrolet).

Such a car is the dream of many, because, for example, it is impossible to break the glass with stones, but many owners need to unarmor the Laura car for a number of reasons. Firstly, the car is quite heavy (one windshield weighs about 25 kg), which leads to additional gas consumption and reduces the likelihood of getting out of a rut or quagmire. Secondly, armored glass has a special refraction of rays, which causes a strain on vision that is more acceptable for working conditions than for leisure. Thirdly, armored vehicles are not registered for individuals, so even if you plan to buy a used car (they are often sold by credit institutions), you will need to take a number of actions to unarmor it. Moreover, the unbooking must be carried out by the legal entity-seller.

How to unbook an armored car

There is a resolution of the Ministry of Internal Affairs no. 1240 of December 7, 2000, on the basis of which it is required:

Engine and transmission

The Lada 4×4 Bronto is equipped from the factory with only one type of power unit - a 1.7-liter VAZ-21214 gasoline engine with distributed fuel injection and hydraulic pushers.

Technical characteristics of this internal combustion engine:

  • exact volume – 1690 cm;
  • placement of the engine under the hood is longitudinal;
  • location/number of cylinders – in line/4;
  • power max. – 83 l. With.;
  • torque max at 4000 rpm – 129 N*m;
  • valves in each cylinder - 2;
  • compression ratio – 9.3;
  • cylinder diameter/piston stroke – 82/80 mm.

The cylinder block of the VAZ-21214 engine is cast from cast iron, the material of the block head is aluminum alloy. With such an engine, the Lada SUV can accelerate to a maximum of 137 km/h and reach “hundreds” in 18 seconds.

Recommended fuel is AI-95 gasoline, the engine is in compliance with Euro-4 environmental standards, average fuel consumption per 100 km is about 12 liters.

The 1.7-liter engine is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, and a manually controlled transfer case is also installed. The wheel drive is permanent all-wheel drive, there are a number of reduction gears.

Procedure for unbooking a car

To do this, in accordance with order No. 1240 of December 7, 2000 (issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs), you need:

  • File an application for changes in the design of the car with the police at the place where the car is registered.
  • Receive a decision on the application, which indicates where and under what conditions the car can be unbooked. There may also be an indication that you need to obtain an additional opinion on the possibility of canceling the reservation, as well as the details of the organizations authorized to cancel the reservation.
  • Conclude an agreement with the relevant company.
  • Wait for the armor and glass to be dismantled.

It turns out that unbooking Laura is quite a troublesome task for the owner. In addition, the operation itself can cost 40-50 thousand rubles, which can be reduced due to the fact that the armor being removed is transferred to the company performing the work. Therefore, on the market there are often offers of cars at low prices without booking. In this case, you must definitely consult with the traffic police.

Although on Russian roads there are cars that the owners managed to unarmor themselves, with the help of an angle grinder. In this case, before the technical inspection, all elements must be installed back (usually hung with double-sided tape and self-tapping screws), and then removed for operation. This usually happens when the armored car was purchased by an individual entrepreneur, who declared it for the transportation of valuable cargo. If such a car is stopped and the inspector notices that the configuration has been changed, a fine may follow for the vehicle’s parameters not matching the documentation for it.

Armored Niva: 1.5 tons of mass and 10 years of life

As we were informed at the AVTOVAZ press center, military vehicles in Russia stopped being armored in 1946, but such production was organized for peaceful purposes - transporting money, valuables, and especially important persons. In the early 90s, only a few factories produced armored vehicles on Russian territory, including RAF and UAZ. A similar idea arose at the Volzhsky Automobile Plant, which 10 years ago created the production of special vehicles for its implementation (as a result of corporatization, it turned into a subsidiary).

Now BRONTO produces several VAZ models in small series. The most popular among customers is “Niva” (as a rule, this is a cash-in-transit version). The company reserves both the regular Niva VAZ-2121 (which, by the way, becomes 400 kg heavier when armored, which requires strengthening the structure and changing a number of components and assemblies), and the extended VAZ-2131, and the Nadezhda minivan VAZ-2120. The company also produces a car based on the extended “ten” VAZ-211082 “Premier”, and works on individual orders. In particular, she has several VAZ-21106 vehicles in VIP version and an armored KamAZ.

More than half of the vehicles have the third class of protection (against Kalashnikov assault rifle bullets of 5.45 and 7.62 mm caliber), the rest have the second class (against 7.62 mm TT pistol bullets). The armor used is Russian-made, which experts consider the best in the world. Car windows are also bulletproof. By the way, some cars are made in the so-called VIP-reservation version - that is, in appearance they do not differ from conveyor VAZs.

According to BRONTO specialists, the company owns about half of the Russian market of armored vehicles made on the basis of cars and minibuses. The company has about 20 competitors in the country, varying in level and volume of production.

Purchase history

Unlike many stories of extensive tuning, this one is as simple as possible: the car was purchased new specifically for the creation of the project. The Bronto version was chosen spontaneously - after inspection, I simply liked it more than the others. The only desire determined before the purchase was the gray color, which, however, was later replaced anyway under the onslaught of non-standard bright shades.

The reason for buying a Lada 4×4 from Arseny, the owner of the car, was: in 2022, he got his first Niva, almost new, but with an eye to off-road use. However, she drove “in the mud” only a few times - it was simply a shame to drive a fresh car off-road. But even after its sale, the long days together in the garage were not in vain: the new project was to be implemented only on the basis of the Lada 4x4.
