The Largus Cross modification has the same story as its “younger sister”, Kalina Cross. People who are aware of the news of the auto industry in recent years have known everything about it for a long time (well, or almost everything), but people who are interested in cars insofar as they often have questions like “does it have all-wheel drive?” what kind of engine?”, “how high is it?” It is to them that we address our material today.

We are familiar with the “cross” Largus firsthand. In 2014, when this car was only at the stage of pre-production samples, we did the first test drive of Largus Cross , and a year later we drove the production car as part of a long test of Largus Cross . But since then there have been several significant news that have slightly changed the idea of ​​​​the “cross”, so we will give a dry summary of the facts - how does Largus Cross differ from the usual Largus today.

Technique

The car remains front-wheel drive, as it almost completely uses the platform of the regular Largus. However, in terms of ground clearance, the Largus Cross is 25 mm higher than its “standard” brother - the clearance of the “cross” when fully loaded is 175 mm. This, of course, does not make Largus Cross a crossover , but it does provide certain advantages on Russian roads and off-road.

The increase in ground clearance was achieved by two measures: firstly, by using retuned struts in the front and other shock absorbers in the suspension, coupled with higher springs at the rear, and secondly, by installing different wheels - instead of 185/65 R15 there are 205/55 R16 Continental brand. Due to the wheels, only about 5 mm of ground clearance is gained, the main part of the “lift” is due to modifications to the suspension. The strut supports, silent blocks, steering and brakes were also adjusted.

At the moment, only one engine is available on the Largus Cross, a petrol 16-valve 1.6-liter 102-horsepower from Renault Logan (interestingly, the specification for Largus previously indicated 105 hp), while on “ simply Larguse” you can choose between this engine and the more affordable 87-horsepower eight-valve VAZ , which replaced the previously installed 82-horsepower eight-valve Renault. The entire Largus family has one gearbox – a five-speed “mechanics” Renault.

From the very start of sales, the Largus Cross was offered in a configuration identical to the top version of the regular Largus, and this remains so to this day, so the “cross” has all the options possible in the Largus family: air conditioning, two airbags, ABS, EBD, leather steering wheel , heated front seats, electrically adjustable mirrors, four power windows, an audio system with four speakers, a luggage rack on the roof lining, a driver's seat with height adjustment, as well as parking sensors, which appeared on the list of “extras” in the spring of 2015 .

When a new car appeared in our family - a seven-seater LADA Largus with roof rails, I thought about modifying the roof rack, as was done on my old Izh-Oda.

To transport goods on vehicles with roof rails, additional crossbars are usually purchased. But they are expensive, and I planned to put five of them to distribute the load on the roof. I didn’t know how strong the finished crossbars were, so I decided to make them myself.

Features of installation and use

Before installing roof rails on Rav 4, remember:

  1. Installation of roof rails must be carried out exclusively in the factory holes. They are located under the protective strip, the process of correct removal of which was discussed earlier.
  2. Treating the seats with sealant is a must. Otherwise, water may enter the Rav4 interior through the mounting holes.
  3. Installation of roof rails must be carried out according to the factory instructions.


Installation
After installing the transport bars, the following operating recommendations should be observed:

  • Use the roof rails for their intended purpose only 24 hours after installation;
  • check the reliability of fixation of the arches before each trip;
  • the transported cargo must be carefully fixed and evenly distributed over the load-bearing surface;
  • do not exceed the permissible load on the roof rails.

I bought five meter-long profiles with a section of 20 x 50 mm with a wall thickness of 2 mm and 1 m of a corner 50 x 50 mm with a thickness of 2 mm, from which I sawed 20 corners 50 x 50 x 50 mm with a thin grinder disc. You also need galvanized fasteners: 40 pieces each of M5 x 30 screws, M5 nuts, spring and simple washers 0 5 mm, 10 pieces each of M8 x 70 bolts, M8 wing nuts and reinforced washers 0 8 mm. Then I had to buy eight sets of 8 mm fasteners.

It was not possible to measure the distance between the roof rails on a car with an accuracy of a fraction of a millimeter, so I decided to assemble the rails locally. After making the crossbars, the dimensions are already more defined, which will allow you to repeat the design according to the drawing.

Citroen Berlingo

Citroen Berlingo is available in cargo and passenger versions. The cargo version is offered with two types of body. The standard body has a trunk volume of 3.3 cubic meters, the extended one – 3.7 cubic meters. A car equipped with a standard body can be equipped with a 1.6 liter diesel engine. with a power of 75 or 90 hp, and the extended version is equipped with a 90 hp diesel engine. The price of the cargo version starts from 599,000 rubles.

Citroen Berlingo expensive but roomy

The passenger version, costing 606 thousand, is the basic one. The top version is equipped with a 120 hp engine, its ground clearance is increased to 200 mm, and the price starts from 804.5 thousand.

ASSEMBLY

I started by carefully positioning the crossbar symmetrically on the rails on rubber gaskets, for which I took pieces from an old bicycle tire in two layers with a pipe. This is very convenient, since the thickness of the gasket can be increased by placing pieces of rubber of the required thickness inside the tire section. At one end of the crossbar I attached a corner, drilled the necessary holes, and clamped it with screws. Similarly, I attached the corner at the other end of the crossbar, and then the inner corners. To prevent the corner from moving after fitting, I pressed it with a clamp.

At the ends of the crossbars, the protruding parts of the corners were filed down. All the blanks were evenly laid out along the length of the rails. I cut off a piece from the corners of the middle crossbar so that its position would be as close to the middle as possible. I secured the second and third crossbars first, drilling 0 mm holes in the corners and tightening them with screws and a wing nut.

The roof rails are not straight, so I had to select spacers based on thickness. To do this, I pushed the two already installed crossbars down so that there was no gap left, then installed the first, fourth and fifth crossbars, but did not drill holes in the corners yet. Then I attached a long straight profile to them as a ruler and fixed it with clamps on the second and third crossbars. Having measured the resulting gaps, I selected pieces of rubber to complement the gaskets, after which it became clear where to drill the 0 9 mm holes. At the first and fifth crossbars they had to be lowered lower.

Then practice showed that additional spacers became good shock absorbers when transporting heavy cargo.

Engine

From the very beginning of production, two types of engines were installed on the Lada Largus, and these are engines from the Renault-Nissan concern:

  • 8-valve four-cylinder K7M (84 hp);
  • 16 valve four-cylinder K4M (102 hp).

At the end of 2015, AvtoVAZ began equipping the RF-90 with a power unit of its own design - an 8-valve internal combustion engine VAZ 11186 with a capacity of 87 hp. With. It should be noted that all installed engines have the same volume - 1600 cm3.

With the 16-valve K4M Largus rides more fun, but the “8-valve” K7M pulls better at the bottom.

The 8-valve engine also has one advantage - it is somewhat cheaper to maintain; in particular, replacing the timing belt is quite inexpensive.

With any engine, the car accelerates well and drives without problems up to 120 km/h, after which the lack of power from the internal combustion engine begins to be felt.

CARGO TRANSPORTATION

During operation, problems began to emerge. Thus, boards 6 m long begin to sway, creating dynamic loads. To avoid this, you need a vibration limiter - usually a rope tied to the body. Here I had to rack my brains. My old Izh had a shorter body, and the trunk was located closer to the middle, so the boards extended beyond the body in front and I attached the rope to the bumper. But Largus is not like that. In the end, I made rope loops that hooked onto the hood hinges.

The crossbars do not have limiters at the ends; the load has to be carefully secured. I used a tape measure to center the length. It is necessary not only to tie the boards to the trunk, but also to tie the front and rear ends so that they do not move. We must not forget to mark protruding long loads with red flags. Traffic regulations for this require a special sign in the form of a striped rectangle, but car dealerships don’t have one, so I use flags.

There was nothing to tie the rear ends of the boards to to reduce sway, but this was compensated for by the soft Largus suspension. In any case, the speed on a good road is no higher than 40 km/h, and on potholes it is much less.

At one time I carried eight boards 50 x 150, 6 m long. This is a little more than 180 kg. Loaded and unloaded with an assistant. With such cargo you should not drive on highways - only on local roads from the nearest warehouse. But I brought boards for the frame of a house with an attic just like that.

Types of configurations and technical characteristics of serial models

Lada Largus 2012, station wagon, 1st generation (07.2012 - present)

Compared to competitors from the budget segment, Lada looks good. Versatility brings advantages: the interior transforms into a cargo platform as needed. Some kind of minivan.

A wide range of spare parts, budget cost, above average quality - this is not a complete list of advantages. The power unit is 1.6 liters, transmission type is mechanical, front-wheel drive.

The basic version of Lada Largus is “Standard”. For a budget price, a potential buyer is offered:

  • Five-seater saloon;
  • Halogen headlights;
  • Steering column with adjustable height and tilt angle;
  • Simple audio preparation;
  • Immobilizer;
  • Stock 15-inch steel wheels;
  • Full size wheel in the luggage compartment.

The “Norma” package is somewhat richer:

  • Fabric upholstery;
  • Seven-seater saloon;
  • Passenger side sun visor mirror;
  • Autonomous rear row seats with the ability to transform 60/40, 30/30/30;
  • Front and rear bumpers painted in the main body color.

Also pre-installed are power windows on the front row of seats, central locking, athermal glass, and an air conditioning system.

The most complete set in the “Lux” version:

All modifications have pre-installed power units developed by the French concern Renault and have a volume of 1.6 liters. 8-valve versions of engines are installed on Standard and Norma, and 16-valve on Lux.

Power varies from 84 to 104 hp, depending on technical specifications. For daily operation of the motor in the “to work - from work” mode, it is quite enough.

The front suspension type is McPherson, the rear is a torsion beam. The chassis easily absorbs small and medium-sized bumps on the road. At high speeds, the car rolls to its side.

“Norma” and “Lux” have pre-installed power steering, which greatly facilitates the process of driving a car at different speeds.

The Lada Largus cargo-passenger van was first presented in February 2022. Largus differs from the classic one in its increased base length, width, and height. The new product is 360 mm longer and 290 mm higher.

The opening in the rear door is made to cover the entire height of the body so that large cargo can be accommodated.

An engine with a volume of 1.6 liters, 87 horses, 103 hp is installed in the engine compartment. Transmission type: mechanical, five-speed, all-wheel drive.

The Lada Largus (KUB) has a five-seater interior layout, but retains the physical ability to transform into a seven-seater. There is a special hatch on the roof for air circulation. The cargo-passenger compartment of the vehicle is covered with noise-absorbing material. The doors and body structure are glazed. There is a window built into the rear doors.

In order to fully heat the car interior, two autonomous stove heaters were installed. The types of power units are similar to the Lada Largus.

Despite a number of advantages, you should not use the KUB for long trips as a passenger, since the car is more of a cargo-passenger vehicle than a passenger one.

The ideal solution is to use the car as a commercial vehicle for prompt delivery of goods around the city.

The average service life of the machine is 80 – 85 thousand km. subject to compliance with the recommendations of the masters and the timing of the scheduled technical inspection.

Scheduled maintenance interval every 15,000 km. Reduce the maintenance period by a third if the machine is used in dusty conditions. Install only parts with original catalog numbers.

EXTENDED TRUNK

The lack of side supports was depressing. Since the farm had profiles 2 m long, I decided to use them for this, at the same time lengthening the trunk itself. I attached the profiles with clamps to the crossbars and drilled vertical holes for fastening right in the assembly. I screwed another 1 m long crossbar to the front and rear ends of the profiles.

In the fall, I unscrew all the bolts, remove the trunk parts and leave them in the garage until spring. To avoid confusion, I wrote the numbers of the crossbars in pencil. If you plan to transport a light, long load, you can put a couple of crossbars in the trunk. I collect everything in the spring. It turned out that some of the crossbars were installed tightly. This is due to the fact that the assembly took place locally. One day I laid all the removed crossbars side by side and checked the dimensions. I was surprised to find that the rails are strictly parallel. I was able to take measurements and make a sketch.

Installation of roof rails and aero crossbars from PT Group

I will combine the installation of roof rails and cross members into one post. Among the variety of roof rails, I chose the best in terms of price, quality and beauty. I didn’t even consider imported ones, since their price is unrealistically high, and I couldn’t find any reason to overpay for the same thing. In the end, I chose roof rails from PT Group, comfort series. (I decided not to take the standard ones, because they are similar to the Largus standard ones, and the comfort series has a wider pipe and aesthetically looks more harmonious) Article: 1300702 The color is called “silver moire” The roof rails themselves cost 3,100 rubles. The installation was carried out by Largus service, the price was 1600 rubles.

I also took the crossbars from Aero from PT Groups, again the combination of price and quality was quite satisfactory for me. In fact, I could have installed the roof rails myself, but I had no desire to tinker around in the cold for a couple of hours, and even there the installation must be carried out in a warm place, because... There is a beautiful diamond-shaped stitching in the center, with the model name at the top. In terms of functionality, only a height lift is available; there is no lumbar support. Another nice option that was not available on Largus before is a comfortable massive armrest.

Underneath there is a deep niche for small items. The new Largus is equipped with a steering wheel from the Lada Vesta in the maximum version.

Thermal comfort in this car is all at the highest level, the following heating systems are installed: steering wheel, 3-speed front seats, windshield (never had it before), rear window and outside mirrors. In addition, separate seat heating was added for rear passengers.

Previously, Largus only had a central lock, but now there is a remote control with a switchable sting, which we saw on Vesta and X-Ray.

The new Largus is equipped with a new instrument cluster taken from Renault Duster. It is analogue with classic hands.

The lighting in the corporate style is a combination of orange and white. All readings are easy to read; there is a small on-board computer with a standard set of readings. Chrome rings add a “luxury” feel.

The center console is borrowed from Renault Duster and painted in black lacquer. There is a spacious niche at the top for small items.

For the first time, Largus uses a 7-inch multimedia system with a touch screen. Below is the heater control module.

I expected that there would be another module, for example, from the same Vesta with two washers and a display. There are no complaints about it, everything works smoothly. The only thing I don’t like is the black air conditioning button, which you can’t always press the first time. Below are buttons for heated glass and seats.

The center tunnel trim remains unchanged: 2 cup holders, 12-volt outlet. The gear shift lever remains the same shape.

The handbrake remains unchanged. The mirror adjustment module remained in the same inconvenient place - under the handbrake. But, if you think about how much we use mirror adjustment, then there are no special complaints about the location.

On the passenger side there is a spacious shelf-pocket, you can place something.

The glove box is spacious, there is a lampshade and a niche for documents.

The interior lighting lamp is of a new type, of a different design. There is a button to call the Era Glonass system manager.

How to install a roof rack on a Lada-Largus with your own hands

The Lada Largus family station wagon has serious capacity: in addition to five passengers, the luggage compartment can accommodate cargo up to 560 liters. The luggage rack is installed on the roof of the Lada Largus using six supports in the mounting holes for the factory roof rails.

Application of crossbars

As we previously noted, the installed crossbars on the roof rails increase the reliability of securing and transporting cargo. These components are also made in the form of roof rails. They are attached to the main rack supports and serve to provide additional reinforcement to the structural frame. This rational approach allows the design to be used for transporting very large cargo, which can be quite problematic to place inside a standard trunk.

For Lada Largus, the so-called cross members for roof rails in the sales network can be found in the following versions:

Each of the designated types of products has its own characteristics and is more convenient for securing cargo of a certain nature. For example, when transporting a soft mattress, it is better to fix it using special arches, but for transporting a boat, straight arches or their horizontal analogues are best suited.

Note that manufacturers use aluminum or analogue metals as material for crossbars, which eliminates the need to doubt the strength of these products. There are practically no difficulties with these accessories. Installation of crossbars to the roof rails available on the LADA Largus roof is a simpler procedure compared to installing the supports themselves.

To correctly mount the crossbars on the roof rails you will need:

  • strictly follow the regulatory rules, which will allow you to observe the nuances of fastening (mainly, special brackets act as fixing means);
  • determine the required number of products (an algorithm should work here that provides for an increase in the number of required crossbars and a decrease in the distance between them with an increase in the weight of the cargo intended for transportation).

Note! Do not allow the load exerted by the transported luggage to exceed the limits regulated by the technical documentation of the design. Applicable to the modification we are considering, the maximum applied load reaches 120 kg.

Cross bars on the roof of Largus

For periodic transportation of long cargo (boards, plastic pipes, ladders, rolled materials), it is enough to install two or three transverse struts on the factory Largus roof rails.

These crossbars are made of anodized aluminum or stainless steel. The profile of the transverse struts can be regular (rectangular) or have a special aerodynamic section. The ends of the crossbars are protected by plastic plugs.

The products are installed on factory longitudinal rails using special locks.

In addition, after a little modification, almost any model of luggage rack from classic Zhiguli can be installed on the Largus crossbars. This solution will save money on the purchase of a specialized cargo platform, since an old trunk from a VAZ 2104 can be purchased second-hand for only 500–700 rubles.

Roof rail coating for Largus

These roof rails have a unique two-layer coating of aluminum profiles. The first layer is a colorless anodic oxide coating that reliably protects the aluminum profile. This is the most reliable way to protect aluminum and its alloys from corrosion and other aggressive environmental influences. The second layer is a black polymer coating, applied electrostatically and baked at high temperature directly on the product. It is a reliable decorative layer. It has a matte velvety surface in a deep black color.

Making and installing transverse struts on the Lada Largus with your own hands

To make your own transverse arches, you will need 2 pieces of a rectangular steel profile 40x20 mm, 1100 mm long; 4 blanks 150x40 mm from 3 mm sheet steel (for mounting brackets); threaded blind rivets; paints and varnishes, sealant.

Mounting brackets with four holes for screws are made from sheet steel. According to the measurements, eight holes are drilled in the profile beams for fixing the brackets. Threaded blind rivets are installed in the holes.

The crossbar blanks are treated from the inside with an anti-corrosion compound, the ends are closed using plastic plugs or welded. Then the parts are painted.

After the paintwork has dried, the arcs are placed on the roof in selected places and, using staples, are attached to the Largus roof rails with screws. The installation sites are pre-sealed with rubber or silicone pads.

Modification of the rear wiper

Unfortunately, the rear wiper operating mode on the Lada Largus does not have an intermittent mode - when turned on, it works constantly.

To switch the wiper to work with a variable pause, use:

  • wiper relay marked 723.3777;
  • standard 4 or 5-pin connector for automotive relay;
  • round terminals;
  • terminals 3 mm wide (“male + female”);
  • pieces of wire;
  • heat shrink tubing for insulating connections.

To connect an additional relay, ground wires are used that have black markings on the steering column switch block (third from the right on the side of the wires), as well as turning on the rear wiper (white, second from the right) and turning on the rear washer (gray, far right).

An additional relay is installed in the gap between the block and the wire route. At the same time, in order for the electrical circuit to be returned to its original state without any problems, standard connectors and terminals are used to connect an additional relay.

The principle of the modification is that when the rear wiper is turned on, the voltage previously supplied to it directly is now supplied to an additional relay, which, after modernization, controls the operation of the wiper, providing the necessary pause between strokes.

An additional advantage of using this relay is that when the rear washer is turned on, the wiper automatically switches to continuous operation mode, and after 3-4 cycles it again switches to pause mode.

The entire structure is mounted next to the steering column switch and secured with plastic clamps.
