A couple of worthy candidates
In the end, how can we do without a few specific examples? Moreover, the experience of domestic nivovods, and not only them (there is a club of VAZ 2121 fans even in Japan) is very rich and people are not at all lazy to share with a friend a couple of useful tips on purchasing. We will start from different price ranges.
3,500-4,500 rubles. The minimum red price tag, for which it is quite possible to find a number of worthy offers for the VAZ 21214 The same “Bear” of the Y-569 series (good off-road, but extremely susceptible to wear on summer asphalt and absolutely uncontrollable on ice), Cordiant “off road” - here the problems with the asphalt road are less pronounced. All these are domestic manufacturers with good reputations).
8,000-12,000 rubles. For American quality on the domestic Niva you will have to pay about 8 thousand “wooden” ones; the BF GOODRICH brand, the Mud Terrain series of types KM1 and KM2, have proven themselves to be excellent. The price, of course, bites, but the cross-country ability really justifies the stated price tag. Well, from “Olympus” the most expensive offers are waving at us extreme tires from Silverstone such as MT-117 (but they are only suitable for off-road driving; on asphalt this “treasure” simply wears out ungodly quickly).
How to choose tires for Niva?
All Niva models are equipped with tires of size 175/80 R16 or 185/75 R16 (depending on the vehicle modification and wheel design), since they provide the necessary cross-country ability, regardless of the road surface.
If tires of another brand are used, then the car wheels should not exceed 215 mm in width.
We figured out the tire size, but besides this point there are other important points that you should pay attention to when choosing products:
- Seasonality . Winter and summer tires contain different types of rubber, or rather mixtures. Consequently, the level of tire hardness will vary. Therefore, you need to purchase tires that suit the season.
- Drainage system . Between the tread blocks there should be wide, roomy recesses (the so-called “grooves”). The latter provide moisture removal and create traction with road soil, mud, grass, etc.
- Presence/absence of thorns . Studded tires are relevant in cases where the car owner travels at low temperatures (in the cold, snowstorm, snow, etc.), as well as when driving on mud or off-road. In comfortable urban conditions there is no need to use such tires.
- Rating of the manufacturer . The higher the rating of the brand, the better the quality of the Niva tires and vice versa.
- Price . Another important point, which in most cases plays a decisive role when choosing a suitable model.
These are the most important parameters that you should pay attention to.
Choosing tires: where to start?
Why change tires at all? An experienced VAZ 2121 driver does not have such questions. Nivovod begins to think about replacing tires not because of a good life, nor in search of extreme sports or unusual sensations. The thing is that all-season factory tires 185/70 R16, being the result of compromises, unification and budgetary frameworks, turn out to be a very mediocre assistant both on the city highway, and when driving off-road, and in winter.
Off-road variant of Cordiant
Here you already have to choose tires for yourself, based on a number of basic parameters:
- in what operating conditions will the future wheels be used, whether the car will have to cut through asphalt road surfaces or more, after all, off-road;
- how far the driver is ready to go in the matter of tuning his iron horse, will the owner’s heart tremble to send his brand new VAZ 21214 under the knife (some tire sizes require widening the wheel arches or bending their sides outward, lifting the suspension, as well as lifting the body of the VAZ 21214 directly above the frame );
- based on the budget (a lift kit costs about 3-4 thousand rubles, it can be easily installed even in your garage, a completely acceptable set of tires can cost 3.5-4.5 thousand rubles, and the most “juicy” offers reach up to amounts of 8-12 thousand rubles);
- take a thorough look at the offers of various brands (it’s worth paying attention to already proven brands, since good tires are not just a beautiful tread pattern, but also the correct chemical composition. And you can be sure that you won’t get a “pig in a poke” only by trusting a manufacturer with a good reputation).
You can’t do without basic knowledge of tire labeling. Typically, the name of the tire indicates three main parameters (for example, 185/70 R16). Where 185 is the tire width in mm, 70 is the profile height expressed as a percentage of the width and R16 is the radial diameter of the rim in inches. There is also almost a dozen additional information, incl. regarding the type of tire (M+S - all-season, AT or MT, these abbreviations are discussed in more detail below), manufacturer, operational and technical characteristics, braking coefficient (A - good, B - acceptable, C - so-so) and much more.

Toyo Proxes CF2 SUV
I tried Toyo for the first time, before that there were Nokian, Goodyear, Danlon, Continental. First of all, I wanted good handling at a reasonable price. Analogs cost 2-3 thousand rubles more. Size 235/55/18, RX machine. The impressions are good. It takes turns well even at 100, does not float up in the water, large longitudinal grooves, quiet, although at first it seemed noisier than the winter Nokian RS. And what is important for me is that the handling is almost like that of Kontik or Goodyear, but at the same time it does not swallow stones like Conti; last summer I took out stones during installation 4 times!! and not oaky in the cold like Eagle F1. Balances normally, on average 50-60 grams per wheel. But I’ve had my own wheels for years now, partly because of them. I've driven about 6-7 thousand on them already, everything is fine. And wear is low, maybe enough for 3 seasons. The above mentioned were enough for 1.5-2 seasons maximum. Overall good tires. And 30 tr. per set, much nicer than 40+!

Hankook Tire Dynapro MT RT03
I've been riding on these tires on my second car for about 6 years in total. Completely satisfied! I get everything I wanted from her with interest! The mileage is 50% asphalt, 30% primer and 20% mockery of the car in a mess. Universal tires, no matter where I go, I feel confident on any surface! But not on ice, the snow porridge goes through with a bang, but you shouldn’t even try to go on the ice, it doesn’t move or stop! For use from +0 and above! Very wear-resistant, if you maintain the correct pressure on the asphalt, it will last a very long time! It had a mileage of 75,000 on Toyota Surf, and I sold it with it, it was still in good condition. Now it is on the X-Trail. In front of her stood Dunapro ATM and winter Kumho. These tires are better in handling than ATM both in puddles and on the beach, only the ATM will be quieter, but do not forget that this is an MT and no noise at all is not realistic. Sturdy, stuck into stones, into cold holes at high speed, rubber even without scratches! She looks very nice, the white lettering really adds to her toothy appearance! I liked the very wide selection of sizes, for every taste and color! If you cut the rubber, it’s white inside, like a cake with white filling (I was surprised) Would you buy more? Of course, without even thinking! You don't need another one!

Toyo Nanoenergy Van
On the gazelle both in winter and summer without taking off, mileage from April 2022 to today February 2022. 75000km. Regular overload of tires by 2 times. Approximately 50% wear. During the entire run I only inflated the tires once. My blood pressure is 4.3. I RECOMMEND, SUPER TIRES. Before this H09, the rear axle ran 170-000 km. Tires work 200%

Cordiant Comfort 2 SUV
A week on new tires in size 225-60-17, Qashqai+2. Before it, Yokohama Suv and Bridgestone were standard from the factory. I will compare with them. At the very least, it’s no worse, and considering that it’s quiet and cheaper, it’s correspondingly better. Ride quality is quite decent. Definitely no worse than bridge and even more so yoki. The protector looks quite modern, unlike the same yoki. The bridge was the noisiest, the yoka was demolished quite quickly. I noticed Cordiant after I bought snocross winter tires two years ago. The dollar has become expensive, and so have all imported tires. I was very pleasantly surprised by these tires after two winters considering the price. Now I took the summer one and I was very pleased with my expectations. The main advantage is that it is quiet, even on rough asphalt. This is probably the quietest tire I've had in all my years on different cars. By the way, winter snowcross is also very quiet, like summer snowcross or even quieter. When balancing the wheels, the installers placed quite large weights, which surprised me. However, on the highway I drove the car at speeds up to 150, no beats. By the way, the yoku could still ride until the end of the season, but due to wear and tear at speeds above 110 it became completely uncomfortable to ride, especially when loaded, the beating was very strong. And I often go fishing laden and at good speeds. In general, I recommend it. For this money you are unlikely to find something better. And even for more money, you most likely won’t find anything better. I'm glad for the domestic manufacturer, well done.

BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2
I’ve been using the tires for over a year; I installed them on a Pajero Sport 2 last summer and haven’t taken them off. I didn't expect such positivity in everything. When I bought it, I was a little stifled by the toad, but as soon as the tires were put on the car, they immediately began to let go. Having driven more than a thousand kilometers on it in a year, I can say with confidence that the tires are worth the money, don’t think twice about taking them, unless of course you are going to climb into the muck over the mirrors. As for winter... my wife has Velcro on the FV polo, the KO2 definitely holds the road no worse in winter, on ice any tires without studs will not slow down (naturally, I did not turn off permanent all-wheel drive in winter). I was very pleasantly surprised at how quiet the tires were on the highway, I read a lot of reviews before purchasing, something like “there is noise but it’s not critical,” so I was prepared for a little noise, BUT IT IS NOT!!! (apparently due to the fact that the tread in the central part of the rubber is shallow). And in conclusion: I never wrote reviews, I was always skeptical about them, I thought, well, who needs this... This tire deserves to be talked about!

KAMA I-511
I took a set of studded ones for the winter - it’s just a fairy tale! 3 days ago, the traffic police caught up with me at night, when they stopped me, they immediately paid attention to the tires: “What, are they good?” - they said, “... and we thought someone was drunk, he was turning in a field on ice at such a speed!” The documents were checked and drove off.
