The Lada-Priora immobilizer light indicator is on

It's no secret that Grant's cars are equipped with an additional protection system - an immobilizer, but almost no one has it activated. This protection system should be activated at the car dealership during pre-sale preparation, but many dealers are simply too lazy to activate it, citing malfunctions, etc. After several months of driving, I found out that my Grant has an immobilizer, but it is not activated. I wanted to go to the dealer and fix it, but I was too lazy. As a result, I found information on the net on activating the Lada Granta immobilizer and am sharing it with all my readers!

How to determine whether the immobilizer on a Grant is activated?

It’s very simple: insert the key into the ignition and start the car, if the icon in the form of a car on the instrument cluster (see number 6 in the figure) lights up for 15 seconds and goes out, then the immobilizer is NOT activated

!

So, if your immobilizer is not activated, then below are instructions for activating it:

• Get into the car and close all doors. • Turn on the ignition with the RED key (spare key with a red mark) and wait 9-10 seconds. • Remove the key. The car icon should blink 5 times per second. • Quickly (within 5-6 seconds) turn on the ignition BLACK (everyday key with a black mark). • 3 beeps + 2 beeps will sound. • Turn off the ignition and remove the key. • Quickly (within 5-6 seconds) while the car is blinking, turn on the ignition RED • 3 beeps + 2 beeps will sound. • 1 beep will sound. • Quickly (within 5-6 seconds) turn on the ignition for 2-3 SECONDS! • Turn off the ignition. KEY IN THE LOCK • 3 beeps will sound + the machine icon will go out. We do not remove the key. (When working with some controllers, the light stops flashing and the buzzer emits 3 sound signals when you turn on the ignition. In this case, you should still turn off the ignition and wait at least 10 seconds) • wait at least 10 seconds. • Remove the key. • We check the activation of the immobilizer. We turn on the ignition with any key, if when you turn on the ignition the car on the dashboard does not light up, then the immobilizer is activated.

What is this, an immobilizer?

How is this device different from a conventional security system? First of all, the degree of protection of the car increases significantly with its use. This device has a complex intelligent system that allows you to control the mechanism only from close range, and not remotely, as is the case with a conventional alarm. This means that when the door is opened, attackers are not able to intercept the signal coming from the device’s key fob. To intercept it, you need to be directly in the car.

Please note that owners of cars with alarms that are serviced in dubious workshops may be at risk. The fact is that making a copy from the alarm key fob is quite simple and does not take much time. And it’s easy to steal a car with an existing copy of the key fob. But as for the immobilizer, it is difficult to make a copy of it, because attackers usually do not have a master card.

Modern security immobilizers are famous for their compactness. They are installed in hidden places. And if you install the immobilizer correctly, it is almost impossible to determine its type and location. But that's not all. Some types of devices have an anti-robbery function that does not even require the participation of the owner.

Two ignition keys on a Lada Granta car

The first is suitable for everyday use and can be supplemented with a remote control device. This key removes the engine lock. This means it deactivates the immobilizer of the Lada Grant.

The second one is necessary for training the Lada Grant immobilizer. Where is the immobilizer located? Usually marked with a red mark. It is suitable not only for starting the internal combustion engine and making changes to the engine blocker settings, but is also designed to control the blocking of all doors without exception. This key should be used only in extreme cases and kept in a safe place. If the training key is lost, the dealer will not service the anti-theft system under warranty.

The immobilizer blocked the engine from starting. What to do?

There are several ways to unlock the immobilizer: using the central locking control button and using an IR transmitter.

If the immobilizer has locked the car, then unlocking using an IR transmitter is suitable for cars in which a key with an IR transmitter controls the central locking and immobilizer. To disable the immobilizer, a code (4 digits) is required. It is entered when you press the gas pedal and the on-board computer control button. Typically this button is located at the end of the windshield wiper switch.

Unlock process

When the immobilizer is active, the ignition must be turned on. At the same time, the immobilizer lamp on the instrument panel will begin to blink, indicating that the immobilizer has blocked the engine from starting. What to do next? Press and hold the gas pedal, after which the lamp will stop flashing.

Now we need to enter the code using the on-board computer button. To do this, the button must be pressed in an amount equal to the first digit of the code. Let's release the gas pedal, the light will start flashing again. The action described above must be carried out for all numbers.

The immobilizer light flashed and the engine would not start.

This is how I encountered this problem.

On a cold autumn morning, my Renault refused to start.

After I inserted the key into the ignition, I noticed that the immobilizer light, instead of going out, was blinking frequently. Naturally, when you turn the key, the starter turns, but the car does not start. Repeated actions did not lead to the desired result.

I had to take a taxi.

A detailed examination of this issue and a search on the Internet led to very interesting conclusions.

It turns out that this malfunction indicates that the machine does not recognize the key.

Reasons for the frequent blinking of the immobilizer light

Important! This malfunction has nothing to do with the key battery, so changing it in the event of such a malfunction is pointless.

Unlocking with the central locking control button

Owners often write on forums that the immobilizer on the Lada Kalina blocked the engine from starting. What to do and how to unlock it? Entering an emergency code usually helps. To do this you need:

  1. Turn off the ignition. The light should start flashing slowly.
  2. Turn on the ignition, after which some lamps will light up and disappear, and the immobilizer lamp will begin to flash rapidly.
  3. Press and hold the central locking control button. The warning lamp should stop lighting.
  4. When the central locking control button is pressed, the flashing of the lamp will decrease. We count the number of flashes of the lamp and release the button when it matches the first digit of the code.
  5. We carry out this operation again for all other digits of the code.

A detailed algorithm for reconfiguring the immobilizer

First of all, you need to close all the interior doors and insert the so-called training “red” key and activate the engine ignition. If the indicator glows steadily, it means that the training procedure should be carried out. Next, you need to turn off the ignition and wait until the immobilizer flashes. Remove the “red” key and immediately insert the regular one, turn on the ignition as usual. At the same time, you will first hear three short beeps in a row, and after a short period of time a couple more. Then turn off the ignition again and reinsert the first training key - three short beeps must sound in the same way and after the same two short beeps. Turn off the ignition and do not remove the learning key. This will be followed by one short signal, and the indicator will quickly and quickly flash. Turn the ignition on and off again, after which 3 beeps will sound and the indicator will turn off completely. Now you can remove the training first “red” key and use the usual one to test start the engine. This is how the immobilizer for Lada Granta works.

Are further blockages possible?

After unlocking, the immobilizer can lock the car again in the following cases:

  1. When the battery is disconnected.
  2. 10 seconds after the ignition is turned off.

After turning off the ignition, you will need to enter the code again. If you enter it incorrectly 3 times in a row, the next attempt will be possible after five minutes. Please note that all of these steps are not suitable for decoding a code solenoid valve or computer. Entering the emergency code will only allow you to start the engine.

Immobilizer activation procedure. Actions when replacing components of the immobilization system.

Activation of the immobilizer (training)

Attention!
Before starting training, the keys should not be in the same bunch, so that there is no more than one key in the transponder reading area. 1.
Sit in the driver’s seat and close the driver’s door.
2.
Turn on the ignition with the training key (with a red insert at the end). Make sure that the symbol of the car with the key (immobilizer indicator) lights up in the instrument cluster.

Attention! If the immobilizer in this vehicle has already been trained, the immobilizer indicator should not light up. In this case, this training procedure can only be carried out using “your” training key, which was previously trained on this car.

3.

Turn off the ignition, the immobilizer indicator should flash at a frequency of 5 Hz, remove the training key from the ignition switch.

Attention! Flashing of the indicator during the learning process indicates successful completion of the learning procedure. Stopping blinking means that the procedure is interrupted.

4.

Turn on the ignition with the working key. The buzzer should sound three beeps and after about 6 seconds two more beeps.

Attention! The time interval between turning off the ignition with the training key and turning on the ignition with the working key should be no more than 6 seconds; if this time was exceeded, there will be no sound signals and the immobilizer indicator will stop flashing. In this case, you should repeat the procedure from step. 2

. If all repeated attempts are unsuccessful, then the working key is either faulty or was previously trained on another car.

5.

Turn off the ignition and remove the working key from the ignition switch.
6.
If training of additional working keys is not required, then go to step
7
.
If training of additional working keys is required, then perform steps 4
and
5
for all trained working keys.
Then go to step 7
.

You can train up to four working keys.

7.

Turn on the ignition with the training key, no later than 6 seconds after turning off the ignition (the immobilizer indicator should flash).
The buzzer should sound three beeps and after about 6 seconds two more beeps. 8.
Turn off the ignition.
Do not remove the training key from the ignition switch. After 6 seconds, a single buzzer should sound and the immobilizer indicator will go into rapid flashing mode (10 Hz). 9.
No later than 10 seconds after the buzzer signal, turn on the ignition, three beeps from the immobilizer buzzer will sound, and the immobilizer indicator will go out.
In cars with a control system (“Lux”), the direction indicators will also blink twice and a short horn signal will sound (completion of learning the radio channel of the control system). 10.
Turn off the ignition, remove the training key.
11.
Check the operation of the immobilizer.
Turn on the ignition with the working key; the immobilizer indicator should not flash or stay lit. Perform a test run of the engine, the engine should start. 12.
At this point, the training and control procedure is completed, the system is operational and functioning normally.

Attention! If at any stage the learning procedure was interrupted, it must be carried out again and brought to completion without changing the system components: ECM controller - immobilizer - code keys.

In summary

(it is enough to control the procedure using the indicator):

  1. Close the driver's door.
  2. Turn on the ignition with the training (red) key.
  3. Turn off the ignition and remove the key. The indicator starts blinking at a frequency of 5 Hz.
  4. Quickly (within 6 seconds) turn on the ignition with the working (black) key.
  5. 3 squeaks -> 6 seconds -> 2 squeaks.
  6. Turn off the ignition and remove the key.
  7. If training of other working keys is required, then repeat steps 4 - 6 for each working key (no more than 4 keys in total).
  8. Quickly (within 6 seconds) turn on the ignition with the training (red) key.
  9. 3 squeaks -> 6 seconds -> 2 squeaks.
  10. Turn off the ignition, do not remove the key. 6 seconds -> 1 squeak. The indicator starts blinking at double frequency (10 Hz).
  11. Turn on the ignition. 3 squeaks. The indicator goes off. The training is over.
  12. Turn off the ignition.
  13. We check the activation of the immobilizer. We turn on the ignition with any key; if the indicator does not light up when the ignition is turned on, then the immobilizer is activated. We test run the engine.

other methods

If the immobilizer has blocked the engine of a Grant or other cars from starting, you can contact a service station, where they can either turn it off completely or install a lineman. The latter can apply voltage to certain terminals and thereby close the necessary contacts. Such a device deceives the ECU, and the engine starts successfully.

Professional technicians can interfere with the operation of the electronics by disconnecting the immobilizer itself from the car’s electronics. But if you do this yourself, you can harm the entire system.

Troubleshooting

Many immobilizer problems can be fixed by simply replacing the battery in the key fob. Transponder keys rely on a small battery to transmit a security code to the car's immobilizer. Be careful when replacing the battery to avoid accidentally damaging the transponder chip.

If you replace the battery and the key fob still does not work, there may be some damage to the transponder chip. In this case, you will have to contact your local dealer and request a new key. Such a replacement is not cheap, so be prepared to pay a hundred or even several hundred dollars for a new key. Typically, the more expensive the car, the more it will cost to replace the key fob.

Immobilizer system problems may be due to corrosion or damaged wires. The engine control unit or its sensors may be broken or faulty. In such situations, for further troubleshooting, you will need to contact a car dealership or car service specializing in electronics.
