Before purchasing a new or used domestic car, every car owner is often tormented for a very long time by the agony of choosing between several models.
And this time we’ll look at a comparison of two models from AvtoVAZ, such as the VAZ 2114 and VAZ 2110. And we’ll try to highlight all the pros and cons of each car. I would like to note right away that I had to operate each of these cars for quite a long time and I can objectively compare which one wins where and which one remains a loser.
Exterior and interior
The VAZ 2110 is a full-fledged sedan, equipped with four doors, inflated aerodynamic body kits, large head optics and a large glazing area.

The interiors of the two vehicles are no different in terms of comfort: two rows of seats upholstered in fabric, a dashboard oriented toward the driver with many buttons, and small legroom.

AvtoVAZ's pricing policy for these two models is not much different. VAZ-2110 can be purchased for 250,000 rubles. The positive characteristics of 2110 have been known for a long time. High-quality installed parts allow you to enjoy the operation of your car. The VAZ-2110 fully complies with the quality guarantee, although in appearance it is slightly inferior to some models of this line.
The price of the five-door hatchback VAZ-2114 reaches 295,000 rubles. The appearance of this car is borrowed from the ninth VAZ model; it differs from previous models in the design of the front part of the body with new headlights and hood, bumpers, radiator trim and moldings. Otherwise, there is no significant difference between these two models.

As can be seen from the table, the “ten” is longer, higher and significantly heavier than its opponent. The wheelbase of the VAZ 2110 exceeds that of the VAZ 2114 by 32 mm. The tenth model loses only in the volume of the luggage compartment, which, alas, cannot be increased.

VAZ-2112: The car is completely reminiscent of the sedan version of the well-known 10. The model has a 16-valve power unit with a volume of 1.5 - 1.6 liters and a power of 92 l/s. A serious drawback is the difficulty of replacing the timing belt, since the valves and the upper part of the piston mechanism may come into contact.

Numerous accidents involving VAZ 2110 and VAZ 2114 have repeatedly proven that the phrase “tin can” almost completely characterizes the true essence of the models. Since young drivers tend to violate speed limits and expose their lives to unreasonable risks, it will not be possible to remain safe and sound in the cabin of these vehicles.
Of course, if we compare both cars, then, given the limited choice, it is better for an inexperienced driver to stop at the “fourteenth”. It’s more compact than the “ten” and shorter, so you’ll get used to its dimensions faster. Among the VAZ 2114 you can find more recent versions - 2013 model year. The main thing you should know is that you cannot drive them while violating traffic rules.
Also remember:
- a car with a seven-year history and a mileage of up to 80 thousand km is extremely rare,
- Before purchasing it, you should check the details of the car,
- Immediately after purchase, all fluids and filters must be replaced (even if, according to the seller, they were replaced a couple of days ago). There is no need to save money,
- Carry out regular vehicle maintenance.
When purchasing any car, carefully read its operating manual. And if you nevertheless purchased a VAZ 2114, fill it only with the fuel recommended by the manufacturer, namely AI-95.
Strengths and weaknesses of cars
The weak point of domestic cars, and not only the two under consideration, is the quickly rusting body. In practice, there have been specimens that acquired through corrosion after just two years of operation. Rotting began due to the smallest chips of the paintwork, after frozen snow or dirt accumulated at the bottom of the car. Despite the fact that the main part of the body of the VAZ 2110 and 2114 consists of galvanized steel, it requires annual “feeding” with anticorrosive. Those drivers who neglected this faced rust.

Another common problem with the vehicles in question, as noted earlier, is the low level of safety. Cars are not equipped with airbags, emergency braking systems, or anti-lock braking systems. Yes, at the time of their release they practically did not lag behind competitive models in terms of safety, but now, with the increase in the number of traffic participants on the roads, this fact cannot be neglected.
Car optics is a separate topic for discussion. Both the “ten” and the “fourteenth” have large rectangular headlights. However, there is not much light from them. As car owners note, in rain or fog you have to almost feel your way through.

The weak points of the models also include problematic wiring, interior fogging, and lack of sound insulation.
The main advantage of the “ten” is its attractive appearance. Unlike the “square” fourteenth model, it is decorated with inflated body elements that visually make the car larger. The interiors of domestic vehicles are cramped. However, in terms of comfort, the VAZ 2110 again wins, since it does not have the usual “stool seating”. The car seats allow the driver to stretch his legs forward and relax a little behind the wheel. Despite the fact that both vehicles are designed to carry five people, they will hardly fit into the cabin. Four is the ceiling of convenience.

As you can see, the choice of a Kalina or Priora car in this case is based on the needs of the buyer. The maneuverable 21127 is convenient in cramped cities with heavy traffic, where parking is difficult. Model 2170 is suitable for people who require large capacity.

In terms of vehicle configurations, everything is also not clear.
First, it’s worth considering the Lada Kalina.
- Standard. This package contains the equipment in the most minimal version. Here you can find electric front lifts, central locking with remote control and an on-board alarm.
- Norm. The next version is complemented by an ABS system and climate control. There are also 14" stampings here.
- The Lyus version is complemented by two airbags, heating and electric rear mirrors. Additionally, there are light alloy wheels, fog lights, and heated front seats. The main advantage is the presence of the ERA GLONASS terminal.
As you can see from the equipment, Kalina is a modest car, equipped with only the essentials.
- Standard. The basic version of the car is already supplied to the market with a driver's airbag and a remote trunk key. There is also anti-theft, central locking and electric front doors. The engine is weak - 1.6l/90 hp.
- Norm. The next version of Priora is distinguished by the presence of power steering, ABS and a 16-valve engine with 98 horsepower. Among other things, it features a velor interior and electric mirrors. In the “norm” version there are 7 divisions, which further complicates the choice.
- Luxury The top version is presented on the market as a budget substitute for modern foreign cars. Inside you can find seat belt pre-tensioners and an indication of unlocked locks, parking sensors, rain sensors, climate control and more. A separate plus is the exterior mirrors with turn signal backups.
- Comfort and Image. New versions released on the market after 2015. Thanks to the refinement of the interior, the car now has a multimedia system with a 7-inch display, two “pancakes” on the rear parcel shelf and 15” alloy wheels.

Regarding safety, the domestic automobile industry has always had serious problems. Actually, according to EuroNCAP, it’s impossible to choose which is better than Kalina or Priora - both cars failed the tests.
According to the standard rating table, 21127 scored 1 star, and the version after restyling 2.5 points out of 5 possible, which does not even reach “acceptable”. The “tuned” version of the ten or Priora received a mark of 3, a little better, but still far from ideal.
As for the build quality, the first generation Viburnum is significantly inferior to its competitor. Increased gaps, squeaks and cheap finishing materials do not cause delight. However, after restyling, everything changed dramatically. The dashboard has been transformed beyond recognition - the panels have been carefully fitted, creaks and the ubiquitous crickets have been practically eliminated. The fit of parts has also moved to a new level.
With Priora the situation is worse. In general, the VAZ 2170 is a redesigned version of the dozen, which negatively affects the interior decoration and design as a whole. Outdated panels, wide gaps, in some places the torpedo joints do not meet or are not combined correctly.
Bodywork and build quality
Car body panels differ in the quality of execution and assembly. Older versions of 21127 appear at service stations due to body defects 2 times less often than models 2170. The same goes for other components. Due to the large number of electronic systems on board, the Priora often breaks down, which causes dissatisfaction among users. Constant problems with electronics irritate buyers.
Reviews from car owners
I owned a VAZ 2110 with a 1.5 engine (78 hp) for four years and a VAZ 2114 (1.6 liter engine, 81 hp) for two years. Both cars turned out to have character. The “Ten” simply consumed tons of fuel. On the highway it took 13-14 liters per 100 km. The “fourteenth” had less consumption, but it had to be spent on 95 gasoline. I tried to drive at 92, but the car doesn’t work. Among the advantages of both: - convenient dashboard, - good visibility, - affordable repairs, - all spare parts are in stock in stores. Among the shortcomings are problematic motors that require attention. “Fourteenth” eventually began to twitch and stall. I went through the entire system, replaced the flow meter, cleaned the throttle, unless I danced with a tambourine next to it, but the problem was not solved. The body also crawled quickly. As a result, I sold it for scrap metal. The “ten” has a more attractive fate - it traveled with me for about 106 thousand kilometers, and then was sold at a profit to a neighbor in the garage. He still rides it to this day. Although 5 years have already passed. I would not recommend these cars either as a first car or as a family car. At their price you can buy much more reliable foreign cars.

I read reviews from many car enthusiasts and am surprised: either they come across such “buckets”, or I was born in a shirt. I had only positive experiences with the “tens” and “fourteens”. On the “fourteenth” I picked up my beloved wife and daughter from the maternity hospital, so I remember the car with special warmth. It is comfortable, roomy, nimble. The stroller fits in the trunk without any problems. In winter it starts up properly and the consumption is tolerable. The options include everything you need for comfortable movement. With the “ten” there was only one serious problem - the inserts turned out. I was pleasantly surprised by the price of the repair. Cheap, fast. After this incident, I drove another 60+ thousand km and sold it. If you take care of your cars, they will last a very long time. And if you squeeze every last drop out of them, then even the coolest foreign car won’t last long.

Have you ever ridden a horse? The wind in your face, the tapping of hooves under the saddle, a slight shaking. When driving a VAZ 2110 and 2114, you get absolutely the same sensations. The complete lack of comfort in these cars even upset me. In 2004, I bought a ten with a 1.5 liter engine as my first car. Since there was nothing special to compare with, at first I thought that everything was perfect. Then I began to notice that the engine speed was fluctuating. I gave it to the service and they did it. After this, problems with ignition appeared. In general, because of little things, the car began to self-destruct. After ten years I had an old Opel for a couple of years. Then my parents gave me a brand new “14”. And you know, even after the old Opel, the new VAZ 2114 seemed incredibly uncomfortable. Stiff suspension, cramped interior (my height is 183 cm), creaky plastic…. It turned out, by the way, that the car practically spits out gasoline if you drive at a speed of 100-110 km per hour. It accelerates impressively and is difficult to control. I would not recommend buying these cars even for simply honing your driving skills. There are too many problems with them.

Yes, the repair of these two cars will require small expenses from their owners. All spare parts are always in stock, so the whole procedure will take little time. However, buying a vehicle, planning in advance where it will be sent for repairs, is illogical. The car must be, first of all, reliable. This characteristic cannot be applied to the VAZ 2110 and VAZ 2114.
A large number of problems with engines, chassis and electronics make it unattractive in the eyes of potential buyers. People who have limited funds buy a car, and the purchase is most often accompanied by the words “I don’t feel sorry for it.” It’s really not a pity: neither modern appearance, nor “explosive” dynamic characteristics. If AvtoVAZ had carefully improved the technical side of the cars, released modern restyled versions, introduced at least a minimal safety system into the equipment and improved the optics of its creations, their history would have received a new, promising continuation.
