Dimensions of alternator belts on Priora and their choice: circumference of products for the VAZ-2170 in different configurations

Spread the love

Surely all owners of a Lada Priora have had to replace the alternator belt. Its resource is not eternal and it has a replacement schedule, which is 60,000 thousand km, or two years, after its installation on the car. But as a rule, a forced replacement is an unpleasant creaking sound when the belt slips, since the belt stretches over time. Also, upon visual inspection of the belt, you can see cracks and abrasions, this also indicates its imminent demise. Here, owners of Lada Priora have difficulties when buying a belt for auxiliary units, since their sizes are different.

The size of the alternator serpentine belt on a Lada Priora without power steering and without air conditioning is 6РК742 - (742 mm). Belt size with power steering and without air conditioning 6РК1115 - (1115 mm). The size of the alternator belt with air conditioning and without power steering is 6РК1125 - (1125 mm). Alternator belt with power steering and air conditioning 1420.

But it can also be noted that the size of the alternator belt on a Priora with air conditioning also varies. Two different air conditioning systems were installed on the Lada Priora model - Halla and Panasonic, and the compressor mounts differ in the bracket configuration, which is why the belt length is different. On a Priora with Halla air conditioning, the belt is installed 6РК1115 (1115 mm), on a Panasonic air conditioning system 6РК1125 (1125 mm). Therefore, the owner of this model needs to know what climate system you have installed. Information about the lamps used on the Lada Priora will also be useful.

Priora alternator belt size

To choose a Priora alternator belt, you need to check whether the car has air conditioning and what brand it is. You can find the difference between the Halla and Panasonic systems by the following points:

  • The extreme right regulator (responsible for air speed) on Panasonic has more than 15 positions, while Hull has only 4.
  • When you press the middle Panasonic button, the air conditioning and windshield defogger mode are turned on. On Hull this button does not function (a plug is installed).

There are also differences under the hood: with the Panasonic system the hose is rubber, with the Hull it is aluminum.
The Priora generator belt with air conditioning without power steering for the Halla system and the Panasonic system is marked 6РК1115.

Without air conditioning, there are two options:

  • without power steering, a 742 mm drive is installed;
  • The alternator belt on a Lada Priora with power steering without air conditioning is set to 1115 mm.

Rules for tensioning and replacing the alternator belt

Compared to the previous VAZ 2110 model, the Lada Priora has a number of significant differences. If before the procedure for tightening the belt was not too difficult, here you will have to make serious efforts. It's all about the availability of additional equipment. After all, Priora, even in the basic configuration, is equipped with power steering and can also have air conditioning, which significantly complicates such a seemingly simple procedure. On the other hand, driving with this equipment is much more comfortable. Therefore, replacement on a car without air conditioning is easier.

Features of belt tension

To tighten the alternator strap on the Lada Priora, you will need not only standard 19mm wrenches (socket and open-end), but also a special one. This is a double-opening tension wrench for adjusting the roller. The pulling process is as follows.

  1. Using a tension wrench, the tensioner roller cage is fixed, after which the fastening nut is loosened.
  2. The tension key rotates and thereby the eccentric race of the tensioner roller rotates, thus the belt begins to tension.
  3. After this, hold the tension wrench and fix the roller fastening nut.

If the car is not equipped with air conditioning and power steering, the belt should bend by a maximum of 12 mm. You should press on the longest section. With additional equipment, the belt is tightened more due to a different trajectory, resulting in a reduced contact area between the belt and pulleys.

Which is the best alternator belt?

List of the most common and high-quality offers:

  • Gates company, price around 1500 rubles.
  • The drive from Contitech costs about a thousand rubles.
  • A Balakovo belt will cost around 1000 rubles.
  • The Dayco belt is also in demand among Lada drivers; its price does not exceed 1,500 rubles.

The most budget option is the Lynx drive, its cost does not exceed 800 rubles.

Belt life

Drive manufacturers claim that the alternator belt for the Lada Priora is 16 cl. without air conditioning it can last 120 thousand km. This is acceptable if all systems work flawlessly and no external factors affect this part of the car. But in reality this is not the case; the operation of the belt is affected by many things, including temperature changes.

Recommendations from experts and Prior owners boil down to the fact that it is better to change the drive every 50-70 thousand km, provided that high-quality spare parts are used.

Selecting an alternator belt for Lada Priora with air conditioning

The manufacturer recommends a poly-V-element for this car with catalog number 8114096Р and size 1125 mm. Many companies produce them. But nevertheless, experts identify several popular brands:

  • BALAKOVO Rubber Equipment (most often installed as standard at the factory);
  • GATES;
  • Bosch;
  • LUZAR.

The most important thing: choose a high-quality belt, not a fake one. Otherwise, such an instance does not pass through for long, causing installation malfunctions. Modifications with the selection of similar parts are also possible.

Alternator belt problems

There are several main signs that it is time to change the alternator belt on the Priora 2172. And if some of them are harbingers of small costs, then some can lead to costly repairs.

Why does the alternator belt whistle?

One of the obvious causes of whistling is water entering the drive. The rubber becomes wet and may make a long-drawn sound when moving for a few seconds. From a heated engine, the moisture quickly dries out, and the squealing should disappear. If the sound appears on a dry, hot day, it means that the drive itself has stretched and should be replaced or the tensioner rollers tightened.

Also, squeaking can occur in winter, during cold times, when the rubber becomes hard and adheres less tightly to the working surfaces. The same heat from the engine makes it more elastic, and it takes its original shape, pressing against the generator pulleys.

Another reason for the formation of a whistle is the simultaneous inclusion of all electrical appliances in conjunction with the air conditioner. If the drive has been in use on the car for some time and has even minor defects, then such a load will be accompanied by an audible sound.

Why does the Priora alternator belt slip?

In addition to water, due to which the drive temporarily loses tight contact with the rollers, its slippage is also affected by the belt mileage. If the new spare part is pressed very tightly against all the rollers, then over time the rubber stretches and may slide when the engine starts. A similar effect is formed due to cracks that appear on the surface of the drive during operation.

Why does the alternator belt “eat”?

A problem that does not occur often, but causes confusion among many car owners - the drive begins to become shaggy on one side. This is due to the destruction of the pulleys, which for various reasons stop working stably. Increased scrolling resistance under load causes the belt to move slightly from side to side, touching other surfaces.

Why does the alternator belt fall off?

If in one case the drive can be “eaten up”, then in another case it can fly off. This happens due to clogging of the working surfaces of the drive and pulleys. Dirt gets clogged, compacted tightly and creates an uneven surface, causing the belt to slip and move out.

A weakened belt tension can also affect belt failure. This happens either due to wear and tear of all elements involved in the drive (their service life is coming to an end), or due to the installation of low-quality components.

Replacing the alternator belt with power steering or air conditioning

Lada Priora has always been produced in various configurations, and depending on this, the drive of auxiliary units had its own differences.
So, for example, the version with an electric power steering had the usual familiar mechanism for tensioning the alternator belt, and replacing it would not have taken more than 5 minutes, since the design was no different from the models of the tenth family. If we consider cars equipped with power steering or air conditioning, then the belt path is slightly different, and the replacement procedure itself is somewhat different from the standard one. Let’s look at the differences below using the example below.

So, to perform this Priora repair we will need a minimum of tools, and these are:

  1. Torx head E12
  2. Extension
  3. Ratchet or crank
  4. A special key for tightening the roller or pliers for removing the locking rings (curved)
  5. 17 ring wrench

So, the first thing you will need to do is unscrew the drive belt roller using a 17mm wrench. This step is shown clearly in the photo below:

It weakens itself, after which it can be finally removed.

Since the belt runs along a path over the engine mount (its right support), it cannot be removed without unscrewing this part. In this case, it is necessary to unscrew the two bolts securing the power unit support, and then raise the engine using a jack.

At this moment, a small gap will form between the body and the support, through which it will be possible to remove the old alternator belt, and later install a new one in its place. This is what the distance between the support and the body looks like after performing the steps described above:

Now carefully, through the gap that appears, remove the old belt, as shown in the photo below.

You will have to play a little with the position of the engine and the front of the body to achieve the maximum possible distance between the support and the engine. But it is worth noting that there are no particular difficulties when performing these actions.

Then we remove the belt from all the pulleys and push it down so that it can be pulled out as simply and hassle-free as possible.

We take it out completely through the bottom and replace the necessary parts with new ones, and these can be:

  • accessory drive belt when it is worn excessively
  • the accessory drive roller, if it has extraneous noise and play

Alternator belt tension on a Priora with power steering or air conditioning

As for belt tension, everything is done a little differently with the power steering or climate system. The fact is that in the usual configuration, when there is nothing else except the generator pulley and the crankshaft, when you press on a belt branch, it should bend from 8 to 12 mm. In our case, such tension will most likely not be enough. From the personal experience of many owners, the belt should bend by about 5 mm (factory values).

And it is best to use the so-called experimental method. To do this, we apply a tension slightly greater than that recommended in the instructions. After this, we start the engine and turn on the maximum consumers of electricity in the car: high beams, heated rear window, seats, heater. If in this mode the belt does not start to whistle, and at the same time there are no extraneous sounds when the roller and generator bearing operate, then the tension can be considered normal.

If there is an extraneous sound from the roller or bearing (they start to hum), then you need to slightly loosen the belt. And you need to achieve such a balance so that the belt does not slip, and at the same time is not overtightened.

Which alternator belt to choose?

Today there are a huge number of companies and manufacturers on the market that produce components for cars. And as for belts, the most popular brands are:

  • GATES
  • BRT - Balakovo belts
  • Luzar
  • Andycar

The first two manufacturers can be called the highest quality of what is sold in the store, and it is they who are installed to a greater extent on the assembly line. But as for the quality of what is actually bought in a store, the difference is very big. Factory components can go two, three or even five times longer than the same “original” from the shop.

Video review of replacing the accessory drive belt on a 2170

A video review of the Priora repair was recorded especially for this site and specifically for this article. It clearly and easily shows the entire process of replacing a belt.

When to change the alternator belt

Whether the Priora alternator belt needs to be replaced with or without air conditioning can be determined by several signs:

  • The permissible mileage has reached 70 thousand km (it is advisable to visually inspect the drive every 15 thousand km).
  • When examining the inner working surface of the belt, there are cracks, abrasions, and tears.
  • After adjusting the roller, the belt tension remains insufficient.

It's also time to change the belt if you feel vibration in the drive.

Problems with an autogenerator and solutions

Replacing the alternator belt with air conditioning on a Priora

The Priora generator does not have many disadvantages, but nevertheless it is worth knowing the main types of its breakdowns, their causes and solutions. If, when you turn on the ignition, the signal lamp does not work and the control devices do not show “signs of life,” then you need to check the fuse in the mounting block and the ignition switch itself

In addition, you need to pay attention to the absence of breaks in the power circuits laid to the devices. Here you need to check the orange wire and its connection from the control devices to the mounting block. When the generator warning light does not light up both when the engine is running and when the ignition is turned on, the battery is discharged, the control panel does not work, then the reason may be in the devices, damage to the voltage regulator, wear (freezing) of the brushes, oxidation of the contacts (on the rings)

A break may also occur between the devices and the output from the generator or the leads from the excitation winding may be unsoldered from the contact rings. Here, most often you have to replace worn-out elements with new ones. You need to do the same if the warning light lights up when the engine is running, but the battery is being recharged. This means that the voltage regulator is damaged, which also needs to be replaced.

This means that the voltage regulator is damaged, which also needs to be replaced.

You will have to work on the car and buy new parts if the generator warning light lights up brightly (or at full intensity) when the engine is running with a discharged battery. This means that either the voltage regulator is damaged, or the valves from the rectifier unit are broken, or the diodes from the power supply on the excitation winding are damaged

It is worth paying attention to the connection of the excitation winding leads at the points of attachment to the rings, and check for breaks in the stator winding (short to ground).

What to do if the alternator belt breaks

Anything can happen on the road, and we cannot exclude those moments when, for some reason, the generator drive breaks. If this happens, you can carry out a simple procedure to replace it with improvised means and go to a service station or auto store to purchase an original spare part.

A strong rope or women's tights folded into a narrow strip are suitable as a substitute for the drive.

  • We lower the tensioner to the limit to facilitate installation of the temporary drive.
  • We put a rope on all the rollers.
  • We return the tensioner to its original position, checking the deflection of the rope (it should not be more than one centimeter).

On cars without power steering or air conditioning, the replacement method is slightly different:

  • Loosen the top nut of the generator.
  • We tighten the tension bolt to bring the generator closer to the engine.
  • We install the rope.
  • We unscrew the tension bolt, moving the electric generator away from the engine.
  • Having achieved the required tension, tighten the upper fixing nut.

If this happens within the city, and the car has a good battery, you can immediately go to a repair shop or store. The battery charge lasts for 20-40 km, but to be sure of covering such a distance, you should turn off all electrical appliances.

How to lubricate the alternator belt tensioner roller

Lubrication of the roller is necessary so that the bearing moves more easily and does not create additional resistance to the movement of the drive. This can be done without removing the roller itself. Initially, select a lubricant:

  • lithium lubricants (most often used “Litol-24” or “Ciatim-221”);
  • CV joint-4 is best manifested in medium and high temperature conditions;
  • synthetic lubricants are not washed out by water, therefore they are recommended for regions with high humidity.

Having chosen the product, you can begin to lubricate the roller:

  1. Using a flathead screwdriver, carefully remove the boot from the tensioner.
  2. Fill the syringe with no more than 1 cubic meter of lubricant.
  3. Insert the needle into the gap from the boot and move it around the entire circle, smoothly squeezing out the contents of the syringe.
  4. Start the engine so that the lubricant is evenly distributed on the roller.

After this, turn off the engine and replace the boot. Excess lubricant should be carefully removed with a cloth or sponge so that it does not get on the belt during operation.

How to tighten the alternator belt on a Priora

If the drive, after inspection, is in good condition and does not require replacement, but the driver is bothered by noise from the generator (short-term squealing), try changing the belt tension.

If the Priora is 8-valve without additional equipment, then tensioning is carried out by an adjusting bolt located on the generator. Turning clockwise will increase the drive tension.

When it is necessary to tighten the alternator belt on a 16-valve Priora with air conditioning, adjustment is carried out using a belt tensioner. This video has two holes for a special key (if you don’t have one on hand, you can make a bracket to size from any bendable metal). It is necessary to insert the key and slowly turn it either toward you or away from you, depending on whether you want to tighten or loosen the drive.

Symptoms of malfunction and their elimination

Lada Kalina 1 and 2 replacing the alternator belt with air conditioning
You can determine whether a replacement is needed or you can simply tighten the power steering belt with air conditioning on the Priora 16 valves only after inspecting this component. To do this, just open the hood and examine the belt; it is located next to the right front wheel. There are signs that indicate it's time to check the alternator belt: something whistling and squeaking from under the hood.

The reasons may be the following:

  • Antifreeze, oil or other working fluids have come into contact with the generator pulley or belt.
  • The belt is worn out - you can tell by its appearance.
  • The tension has dropped - in this case, the component must be tightened.
  • The bearing in the generator is worn out.

When the belt whistles in a Priora with 16 valves, it’s time to carry out diagnostics. If there are cracks, tears or other serious damage on its surface, then replacement is required. If the generator component with hydraulic booster and air conditioning looks normal, you should check its tension; the optimal level of deflection is 6-8 mm - you need to press the component in the middle between the generator and the pulleys.

Are there visible coolant or engine oil stains on the surface? If the contamination is not significant, they can be cleaned. If the liquid has penetrated into the material, cleaning will not bring any results; replacement is needed. If the component is well tensioned and no damage or stains are visible, then you should move on to checking the bearings. They may need to be changed.

Alternator Belt Adjustment

How to tighten the alternator belt on a Priora 2170 is described just above; you need to check that its tension is correct:

  • It is necessary to create pressure on the drive between the camshaft discs (you can press hard with your finger) and see how much the belt bends. The permissible deflection is 5-6 mm. If the drive does not flex, you should loosen the tension; if you push it with your finger more than one cm, you need to increase the tension.
  • There are special marks on the roller that you can use to guide you when adjusting the tension. This applies only to a correctly selected new belt and at the time of its initial installation.

If the adjustment is incorrect, the following points appear:

  • Weak belt tension creates a voltage dip (the battery icon on the dashboard lights up, the headlights shine dimly).
  • If the drive is overtightened, the generator bearing will be under too much load and will operate with a loud hum, and will also quickly fail.

Original Priora alternator belt codes

But first, let's look at the source codes. Their dimensions and the dimensions of the tape are given in the table.

AccessoriesOriginal product codeBelt length, mmprice, rub.

21100-8114096-82

The Priora meter is supplied with various sets of accessories. Firstly, without aggregates - then the shortest tape is required. If you only have one unit (power steering or air conditioning), then a middle belt is required. If you have both air conditioning and power steering, you need the longest belt possible. As you can see from the table, the belt for one block has the same original code and length - regardless of which block it is.

When looking for a replacement belt, keep in mind that the original code specifies different belt lengths for a given unit. For example, when choosing by code 21100-3701720-00, you will find analogs with a length of not only 742 millimeters, but also 738 and 745 millimeters. So take a look at the description.
