Paying so much attention to speed characteristics that allow us to stay afloat, we completely forgot about the brakes. It is very difficult to overestimate the importance of these “guys”, especially when you are driving at breakneck speed, with countless horses under the hood. - Together with injection power units, it is often recommended to use direct-flow mufflers. This part should only be used in the gas exhaust system if you have carried out a thorough modernization of the engine. Its cost is much higher than the first method, since you will have to spend money on a crankshaft, a set of pistons suitable for the new crankshaft (since the height of the cylinder block has certain restrictions), and special rings for the pistons. In addition, it will be necessary to pay for work related to block boring.
Example for replacing a stock crankshaft
For many, it may be surprising that the increased displacement of the “nine” engine is not always the most advantageous method of boosting. In some situations (it all depends on what the engine should ultimately be like), it is much easier and more efficient to modify the cylinder head (cylinder head) and then install a suitable camshaft. This type of boost will also make it possible to increase the power performance of the power unit.
Of course, to maximize all the capabilities and reserves of the camshaft, a fairly serious modification of the cylinder head will be required, which may even include repressing the seats and installing valves with a large diameter. The technical characteristics of the VAZ 2109 cylinder block, like other components, leave their mark on the overall performance of the engine. If you change the characteristics of the engine for the better, be prepared for the fact that you will need to make improvements to other mechanisms to achieve the lost balance. Let's list the most important points:
- The brake system of the VAZ 2106 is not designed for strong engines. We'll have to install more efficient brakes.

- The exhaust system will need to be reworked.

If you do not replace the crankshaft, then tuning the engine will not bring the desired result - after all, all elements of the system must work in harmony with each other.
Camshaft Modifications to the engine inevitably lead to replacement of the camshaft. Moreover, you can select one of two types depending on your driving style.
If a car enthusiast prefers to drive at high speeds, then the car needs to install a top shaft. It allows you to increase the revs in the red zone, allowing the engine to get the best torque in this zone. This effect is possible due to the fact that wider and more powerful cams are used. They push the valves more efficiently, their opening process takes longer and they open more. However, problems arise when idling. You have to update the ignition system controller program. And the ignition system itself should be replaced with a more modern one.
If the car owner prefers to drive at medium and low speeds, then a lower shaft is best suited. At low speeds, it provides increased torque, which improves the vehicle's maneuverability on difficult road sections. This also reduces fuel consumption.
Chassis. It is impossible to modify the engine and get a good result without making changes to the chassis. The chassis must be brought into line with the new engine characteristics.
First of all, improvements affect the braking system. Ventilated discs should be installed on the front wheels. And disc brakes are installed on the rear wheels instead of drums. The caliper must now be installed from the VAZ 2108. You must remember that you will have to adjust the axle shaft to the new mounting diameter of the brake disc. The caliper is installed in the same way as it is installed on the front brakes. The axle bearing is also being replaced by SKF. It is also necessary to replace the main brake cylinder with a more reliable, foreign-made one.
You cannot do without installing shock absorbers of increased rigidity and reinforced springs.
To increase body rigidity, you will have to install new spacers. One of them is installed under the hood, which increases the rigidity of the space between the side members and the attachment points of the front struts. The second spacer is mounted in the luggage compartment, which allows you to fix the location of the mounting points for shock absorbers and springs.
Steering system. A faster engine combined with a standard steering wheel is not the best idea: the car becomes almost uncontrollable on the road. You'll have to make the steering wheel stiffer. To do this, you will need to work on strengthening the anti-roll bar. To do this, the standard stabilizer is shortened and individual mounts are made. This procedure is long and unpleasant, but it allows you to improve the car’s behavior on the track.
So, if you want to get more dynamic acceleration, reduce fuel consumption, improve maneuverability on difficult sections of the road and make the behavior of the VAZ 2106 more manageable, then engine tuning will help you with this. However, remember that to achieve balance you will have to make modifications to many other elements of the system.
How to increase the power of a VAZ 2109 engine (carburetor) with your own hands
The vast majority of Nines are powered by carburetor engines. Many actively praise the injectors, but, nevertheless, this did not affect the total number of carburetor versions.
The VAZ 2109 car has a DAAZ 2108-1107010 carburetor. Dimitrovgrad residents do not grab stars from the sky, and the carburetors coming out of their assembly line are frankly different. One can serve five to ten years without complaints, while another, for no apparent reason, can suddenly refuse to work. True, the problem is not always a manufacturing defect.
Often such difficulties arise from dirt or bad gasoline. Or from a not very smart driver. There may be incorrect “non-original” jets, which also leads to problems.

Before tuning, you need to know how the Solex carburetor works. It was produced in several modifications and on the VAZ 2109 it was installed either DAAZ-2108 or DAAZ-2183. These carburetors are devices that are designed to accurately meter fuel into the air stream. The Solex carburetor also has the following features:

- Note that the Solex carburetor has two vertical channels called chambers.

- Due to the fact that there are two chambers, and the damper drive is designed in such a way that as you press the gas pedal, one and then another channel opens, such a carburetor is called a two-chamber carburetor.

- Among the main features of the carburetor, we also note cone-shaped narrowings, called diffusers. They are needed to create the vacuum necessary to suck fuel from the float chamber (a special container in the carburetor body).
Note. The fuel level in the float chamber is constantly maintained to ensure normal carburetor operation.

Since 1993, the manufacturer AvtoVAZ opened the VAZ-2110 project. A front-wheel drive luxury sedan was being developed, so carburetor modifications of engines 2108, 2110 and their variants did not meet the conditions.
Already at the initial stage, the project was divided into two independent works. A simple conversion of the G8 hatchback into a sedan was called VAZ-21099. The name of the second project remained the same, but work on it was considerably delayed for a number of reasons:
- in 1985, a test sample appeared; the car with the new engine was planned to be launched into series in 1992;
- the crisis confused plans, the management of the manufacturer's plant put the VAZ-2110 on the assembly line only in 1996;
- The first cars had a carburetor internal combustion engine, then a modified 2111 injection type.

Removing the motor
To remove the engine you will have to go through a certain process of disconnecting and dismantling the auxiliary systems. So, let's get started with the process:

- We remove the air filter and carburetor.
- We remove the ignition elements that are located in the engine compartment.
- Drain the coolant and engine oil.
- We unscrew the gearbox from the internal combustion engine.

- We take out the engine CV joint.
- Unscrew the engine mounts.
- We remove the hood and dismantle the engine.

- We dry out the valves.

Determining Rework Priorities
To increase the power of the VAZ 2109 carburetor engine, you will need to purchase a piston group, valves, camshaft, connecting rods and crankshaft. All these parts must be lightweight and manufactured by tuning manufacturers.

We assemble the piston assembly, namely, we attach the pistons to the connecting rods. Then, you can begin the so-called “dressing” process. This refers to the attachment of connecting rods with pistons to the crankshaft. We install the crankshaft oil seals and bearings. We install the yoke and you can fix the pallet. Then, the remaining auxiliary components, such as the pulley, water pump and roller, are assembled.
Head tuning
Tuning a cylinder head is actually assembling new parts onto old seats. So, a disassembled cylinder head is assembled from an old body and new tuning elements. There is nothing complicated in this process.
Assembly of the unit
After the main systems and components have been assembled, you can proceed directly to the process of assembling the engine together. So, in reverse order, the cylinder head, valve cover, pulleys, and timing belt are attached to the cylinder block.
After assembly, it is recommended to run the engine cold, but since not everyone has a running stand, most motorists carry out this operation hot, directly on the car.
Refinement of auxiliary systems
After the main components of the power unit have been assembled, you can begin installing auxiliary systems. So, first of all, we install the fuel injection system. An old Solex carburetor should not be installed, since it will not supply the required amount of fuel to the combustion chambers. Therefore, it is necessary to find an improved Solex Mega-2 carburetor or the Czech version - IKOV.
It is worth modifying the ignition system. Instead of standard spark plugs, it is worth installing Brisk spark plugs marked A2. Also, standard high-voltage wires are replaced with a tuning version produced by Tesla.
Do not forget about the cooling system, since an increased number of crankshaft revolutions will speed up all processes, and accordingly increased heat emissions. Therefore, a kit cooling system is installed on the VAZ 2109, which includes: silicone pipes, a sports pump and a two-chamber thermostat. It is also recommended to install a sports radiator made of aluminum. This will lighten the weight of the car by several kilograms.
The final modification is the installation of a “zero” resistance air filter. Installation of this unit is quite simple; it is “aired” onto the standard fastenings of the old case. The air intake is oriented so that there is a direct air supply.
Also, in addition to standard modifications, an air supercharger can be installed on the engine. Of course, such a modification wears out the engine elements faster, so it is recommended to install a “snail”.
After all modifications have been made, the engine is installed on the vehicle, and running-in and adjustments are carried out.
We resort to serious processing - boring the cylinder block
You can also increase the engine power by boring the cylinder block. Due to this, the volume of the combustion chamber increases, which means that a larger amount of the fuel mixture is placed in it. When choosing this method of modifying an installed motor, the following points should be taken into account:
Increasing the volume of cylinder blocks does not lead to a significant increase in fuel consumption. This work can only be carried out if you have certain experience and equipment. When changing the design, one should take into account the fact that the walls of the cylinder block become thinner. At the same time, the design has channels for the cooling system
Therefore, attention should be paid to the calculations performed.
Boring a cylinder block yourself is possible only if you have the required equipment and certain skills. The surface must be strictly cylindrical and free from significant defects. Otherwise, the engine will begin to wear out quickly.
The risk is worth it
Extreme automotive enthusiasts, risking literally everything, arrange a complete modernization of the internal combustion engine. To say it's risky is an understatement. All that remains of the old spare parts in the new engine is the block. In this case, almost everything changes, from an increase in the volume of the working stroke to the injection rate of the air-fuel mixture. This entire system is covered on top with a 16-valve head from a VAZ, which further leads to an increase in horsepower to 120-130. Do not try to repeat such operations without prior training from more experienced comrades; this modernization method is only available to highly qualified tuning centers. The camshaft and intake system, in principle, can be replaced by any car mechanic; no special knowledge or effort is required, but in our case these minor skills are clearly not enough.
It is worth remembering that such a surgical intervention can destroy the transmission of a new car. First of all, the gearbox will come under attack, then the clutch will die for a long time, and then the drives will burn out. I think the consequences are obvious. Therefore, “cheap” intervention in the life of the internal combustion engine will lead to expensive modernization, or even replacement of the entire transmission.
Some eccentrics even manage to reduce the steps in the gear ratios between first and second gears. But the end justifies the means, and this method also has a right to exist.
Poor quality fuel
The first thing you need to check is how high-quality the fuel was poured into the vehicle. If the gasoline was of poor quality, then most likely one of the elements of the fuel system was forgotten. So, the motorist will have to find out what the fuel supply scheme is and find parts that could have failed.
So, the first element that comes under scrutiny is the spray nozzles. Malfunctions of the injectors can cause unstable operation of the engine, which will lead to tripping. A special stand is used to diagnose and clean the unit, but many motorists carry out the process themselves, using carburetor cleaning fluid.
Also, unstable engine operation may be caused by clogged fuel filters. One is located under the rear right wheel, and the second is in the fuel pump. There is a filter mesh on the fuel pump intake that needs to be replaced. The process is quite complicated, since you have to remove the rear seats and remove the fuel supply element. But the fuel filter under the wheel can be changed quickly and without any problems.
