If fluid leaks at the connections, they need to be tightened. If fluid leaks from under the rod, the master cylinder must be repaired.

To do this, the cylinder must be removed. Depending on the model, it can be mounted both from the passenger compartment (under the pedal) and from the engine compartment. Then the cylinder needs to be disassembled and cuffs, seals and other wearing parts replaced. In auto shops there are special repair kits that contain all the necessary parts to be replaced. Of course, it will not be possible to carry out such repairs on the road.

Repair may be needed not only for the master cylinder, but also for the slave cylinder, which drives the clutch fork.

To get rid of air in the system, which, as we have already said, can also cause the pedal to fail, it must be “bleeded”. It is advisable to do this procedure with a partner, since it is inconvenient to perform all the actions at the same time alone. So, the procedure is as follows:

  1. You need to remove the cap from the master cylinder bypass valve and put a hose on it. The free end of the hose must be lowered into a bottle one-third filled with brake fluid.
  2. Then you should open the bypass valve by unscrewing it one turn.
  3. Next you need to press the pedal. If you are doing the procedure alone, install a stopper to secure the pedal. It must be kept in this position until bubbles stop coming from the hose. In this case, it is necessary to ensure that the liquid level in the tank does not drop below normal. If necessary, liquid must be added.
  4. When the bubbles stop coming out, you need to close the valve and release the pedal. Then the procedure must be repeated, i.e. open the valve and press the pedal. And so on until air bubbles stop coming out.

If the pedal is stuck, i.e. it cannot be forced back to its original position; most likely the reason is a malfunction of the cylinder. As in the case of its depressurization, the cylinder must be dismantled and “rebuilt”.

How the malfunction manifests itself


As a rule, the pedal goes down suddenly, and the oil level in the gearbox does not matter.
This can happen both while driving in high gears and at the start. In this case, the car drives in gear, and the clutch pedal can be returned to its original position with the toe of a shoe. However, changing gears in standard mode becomes impossible. There are cases when the malfunction is spontaneous. For example, the clutch pedal failed, the driver made it to the repair site in an emergency, and the clutch suddenly returned. However, after a few hundred km the clutch drive breaks again, and completely.

Clutch diagnostic methods

The main symptoms of a faulty mechanism:

  • Slippage (when the disk and basket, when connected to the motor, rotate at different angular speeds).
  • Strong vibration inside the mechanism, especially noticeable when starting from a standstill and accelerating.
  • Noise generated when the clutch operates.
  • Violation of the accelerator stroke.

Diagnostics of the clutch of modern cars requires the use of professional equipment. However, you can do a simple test yourself. To check, press the pedal several times with the engine off. Then listen. Creaks, clicks, and other extraneous sounds will indicate problems with the box.

Another test is carried out in neutral speed mode. The clutch pedal is pressed all the way, then reverse gear is engaged. If you hear a crunching or crackling noise, one of the drives is faulty.

The check at the third stage is carried out in motion. The gears are sequentially switched to 3rd, then the gas pedal is sharply depressed. If the car does not accelerate, but the crankshaft speed increases on the tachometer, this is a sign of a malfunction. At the same time, it begins to smell unpleasantly of burnt rubber.

Serious damage to the transmission device can be judged by an unsuccessful attempt to engage one of the gears. Therefore, when the motor is turned on, you need to use all speeds.

Adjustment instructions

The procedure itself is simple and after reading our article and watching the video, even an inexperienced car owner can handle it.

The main element that we need is an adjusting nut, which is located in a fairly convenient place - on the cable sheath.

  1. When the pedal is released, you need to use a tape measure to measure the distance from the floor to its lower edge. It should be within 18-20 centimeters. Distance in the depressed position
  2. Next, you need to press the pedal with your hand all the way to the stop and measure the distance from the floor, again to the bottom edge. It should be within 6-7 centimeters. Measurement when squeezed
  3. From the first result obtained, 18-20 cm, we need to subtract the result of the second measurement, 6-7 cm, in the end we get 13-14 cm. This is considered to be the normal value for the VAZ 2109.

  6. By rotating the adjusting nut clockwise, we increase the pedal travel, it will begin to move up. And vice versa, by rotating counterclockwise, we reduce its speed; at this moment it will begin to move down.
  7. We take measurements, if the results are satisfactory, then tighten the locknut and the work can be considered complete. If not, then we do it again, that is, you need to tighten or loosen the cable.

So, we drive the car into the pit and block the rear wheels by holding the parking brake lever. We reset the box itself to “neutral”. Next, we tear off the wheel bolts and raise the front left part of the car. After removing the wheel, you will need to unscrew the bolts securing the lower ball joint. You should also remove the mass air flow sensor and the clamp securing its pipe. We also take out the air filter. Next, remove the clutch cable from the fork. To do this, loosen the two nuts that attach the cable to the bracket on the transmission. After this, remove the negative terminal from the battery and unscrew the starter mounting bolt. Nearby, unscrew the gearbox mounting bolt using a 19 mm wrench with an extension. Remove the upper starter mount and remove the chip from the speed sensor. We also unscrew the speedometer cable, which is installed in the box.

How to prevent this?

The following tips are a little banal, but effective. At a minimum, you need to fill your car with high-quality gasoline with the correct octane number. The instructions for the car must indicate what fuel should be poured into the tank.

This also applies to oil. It is necessary to use only the lubricant recommended by the manufacturer. Taking into account the presence of counterfeit oils on the market and low quality fuel, it is necessary to change oils even more often than the car manufacturer recommends. At a minimum, after 8-9 thousand kilometers the lubricant must be replaced. This will extend the life of the motor.

In general, you need to operate the car carefully. If you put a heavy load on the engine at least once and heat it up to the “red zone” on the thermometer, then problems with the engine can arise constantly. In this case, jerking when starting is far from the worst problem.

Causes and troubleshooting

Installing the disk on the machine

Symptoms 1 and 2 indicate critical wear of the clutch driven disc or contamination of it with engine oil that has leaked from the cylinder block or gearbox due to leaky seals of these units. To more accurately determine the cause, just look into the engine compartment and look through the window on the clutch housing cover. If there are traces of oil on the flywheel teeth, then the seals will have to be replaced. If there are no traces of oil, the clutch driven disc needs to be replaced.

Symptoms 3, 4 and 5 indicate incomplete shutdown of the mechanism. This occurs when drive parts break, driven and pressure disks are deformed, the cable breaks and the VAZ clutch drive is incorrectly adjusted.

Symptom 6 indicates a breakdown of the damper springs or wear of the release bearing. Symptom 7 indicates that the wheel hubs are jammed on the gearbox shaft splines. They just need to be removed, cleaned and lubricated. Symptoms 8 and 9 indicate that the cable needs to be replaced and the drive adjusted. Replacing the clutch assembly is also carried out after purchasing a used car.

Adjusting the VAZ 21099 clutch drive is a very simple procedure, it is done like this.

  1. First you need to take a ruler and measure the distance the pedal moves when pressed. If it is less than 12.5 or more than 13.5 cm, we proceed to adjustment.
  2. We look into the engine compartment, remove the battery, find the place where the cable passes through the gearbox bracket (next to the ignition coil). It is secured with adjusting nuts on both sides of the bracket.
  3. If we need to increase the pedal travel, turn the nut located clockwise, located closer to the car interior. If, on the contrary, it is necessary to reduce the stroke, turn clockwise the nut that is closer to the front bumper.
  4. Again, measure the distance with a ruler: if it is within the recommended limits, the adjustment is complete.

Replacing the cable is also not a very difficult task.

  1. Open the hood and unscrew the adjusting nuts.
  2. Remove the cable from the gearbox bracket.
  3. Remove it from the clutch fork.
  4. We move into the interior, knock the lock washer off the pedal pin and remove the cable end.
  5. We take out the rubber gasket from the front panel from the side of the engine compartment and take the tip out.

Do they repair gearboxes?

In any case, you will have to go to a service station, where they will examine the car and issue a conclusion. If the automation fails, repairs will be quite expensive. However, if any gear from the mechanism breaks down, the box, in principle, can be disassembled and a separate element replaced, but this is also a rather painstaking and complex procedure, and it costs money.

Note that quite often service stations do not undertake to repair automatic transmissions at all. Often they are simply replaced, but there are craftsmen who agree to restore these units, which allows the owner to save money.

If there is a knocking noise after replacing the clutch

As a rule, the cause of knocking after replacing parts is defective parts. In particular, there are dangling damper springs in the driven disk. Therefore, before installing such a spare part on a car, you need to carefully inspect it. Parts of the disk may also be poorly riveted.

Knocks in the clutch area can occur due to a crack in the release bearing bushing (the bushings are often made of plastic). Even at the site where the bushing fits on the flange of the gearbox input shaft, play may form, which also leads to a knocking sound.

The knocking noise occurs due to a broken clutch basket petal, but such a defect occurs infrequently. Another reason for the knocking is a broken starter housing in the Bendix area; it rattles when the car moves. A tooth on the flywheel crown may break off, and it will also knock when touching the rotating parts.

When adjustment is required

Adjusting the VAZ 2114 clutch may be required in the following situations:

  1. The clutch has been completely replaced.
  2. The clutch was repaired and its individual elements were replaced.
  3. The clutch travel is too large or, conversely, insufficient.

If everything is clear with the first two reasons, then in the latter case simple measurements should be performed. To do this, you need to measure the distance between the minimum and maximum positions of the pedal (that is, in situations when the pedal is pressed to the floor and when the pedal is freely released). The optimal value of this distance is in the range from 12 to 13.5 cm. If in fact it turns out to be larger or smaller than the specified dimensions, it is recommended to make an adjustment.

In addition, in some cases, too much stroke may indicate severe wear of the friction linings located on the driven disk, as well as the need to replace them.
