Lada Granta automatic transmission: changing the oil in an automatic transmission

Let's start with the fact that the automatic transmission on the Grant conventionally belongs to the category of so-called “maintenance-free” gearboxes. In other words, as the manufacturer himself claims, the oil in the automatic transmission of the Lada Granta is filled for the entire service life of the car. It turns out that you only need to change the oil in the Lada Granta automatic transmission if the gearbox is being repaired. Otherwise, there is no need to change the oil during operation.

It should also be added that transmission fluid, although slower than motor oils, still inevitably loses its beneficial properties. Taking into account the fact that the Grant has a “classic” hydromechanical automatic transmission, the ATF oil in such a box gets very hot in the torque converter when transmitting torque.

You can also note temperature changes, wear products of the box itself, contaminating the liquid, etc. It turns out that if the owner is interested in increasing the service life of the machine, the oil in the automatic transmission of Grants and any other car needs to be changed.

How to change the oil in an automatic transmission Lada Granta

First of all, you should select the appropriate automatic transmission oil for replacement. The Lada Granta automatic transmission can be filled with either original oil (recommended by the manufacturer) or suitable analogues.

So, to replace you will need:

  • Transmission oil in Granta automatic transmission;
  • Container for draining waste;
  • Hose and funnel;
  • Clean rags;
  • Keys: 19 and hexagon 5;

Next you will need to perform the following work and operations:

  • First, the automatic transmission needs to be warmed up by driving the car for about 10-15 km. Then the car needs to be lifted on a lift, driven into a pit or onto an overpass.
  • If the car has additional engine protection, this protection will need to be removed. Next, you need to warm up the internal combustion engine again to operating temperatures (turn on the cooling system fan 1-2 times).
  • After the internal combustion engine, you can turn off the engine and let the units cool a little. After cooling has occurred, we go down under the car. The automatic transmission housing has a drain plug and a filler plug.
  • Taking the key number 19, unscrew the drain plug. Next, use a 5 key to unscrew the overflow plug, after which the waste is drained into a container placed in advance.
  • After the used oil stops flowing, the areas around the plugs and the plugs themselves should be carefully wiped with a clean rag to remove dirt.
  • Both unscrewed plugs (drain and overflow) must be tightened with the recommended force (indicated in the manual). Now, to gain access, you will need to remove the air filter housing. This will allow you to get to the automatic transmission oil dipstick.
  • The specified dipstick must be removed, after which a hose with a funnel is inserted into the neck.

What to look for when changing the oil in a Granta automatic transmission

As you can see, the procedure described above is not complicated. However, you need to understand that this is only a partial replacement, which does not allow you to immediately update the entire liquid. For this reason, it is recommended to carry out partial oil changes in automatic transmissions quite often (every 20 thousand km).

Another possible method of updating is in three stages, when the partial replacement procedure is performed after 2-3 thousand km. after each stage. This method allows you to “refresh” the oil as much as possible with your own hands without seriously disassembling the box.

For this reason, as part of the replacement, before checking, it is necessary to at least warm up the engine until the cooling system fan turns on. The car also needs to be placed on a level surface. Then, with the engine running, the automatic transmission selector should be moved from position P to position D, R, N, etc. In each position the box should work for 10-15 seconds.

After the driver has “walked” through all the positions, the power unit must be turned off, the air filter housing must be moved aside, after which the automatic transmission dipstick must be removed. In this case, you first need to wipe the oil dipstick with a clean rag and insert it back until it stops for 2-3 seconds. Then the dipstick is removed again and the oil level is then assessed using the dipstick.

Normally, the oil level should be between o and “max”. It is not allowed to either reduce or exceed the level above or below the specified marks

Please note that overfilling the automatic transmission with oil can lead to negative consequences in the same way as underfilling

Checking the oil level

Changing the oil is one of the main processes that a car enthusiast must master. You can certainly perform this procedure at any car service center, but doing it yourself is also not difficult. The first thing to check is the remaining oil level. In the Lada Granta this is done exclusively when the engine is warm!

The car must be operated for 10-15 minutes at an air temperature of about 20 °C. At lower temperatures, the engine will take a little longer to warm up, but it is recommended to change the oil in the cold season only if absolutely necessary! After the described manipulation, the car should be stopped on a flat surface and, opening the hood, do the following.

  1. Initially, the gearbox lever smoothly switches to position “1” from position “P”. Now you should do the reverse procedure, holding the gear shift lever at each of the intermediate positions on the way to the “P” position for 5 seconds.
  2. Next, the dipstick is removed from the Granta gearbox, thoroughly wiped with a dry and clean cloth and reinserted into the automatic transmission. It is important to ensure that the level measuring device is inserted all the way so as not to make a mistake with the volume of oil being poured. The dipstick should only be wiped with a clean cloth to prevent particles of dust and dirt from getting into the mechanism. The best option is a lint-free cloth for cars, sold in the appropriate departments of specialized stores. Its use completely eliminates the entry of foreign microparticles into the oil tank.
  3. At the next stage, the dipstick is removed again and the mark at which the oil level is checked is checked. If its value is below the minimum value limit, you can safely proceed directly to the oil change procedure.

Why might oil leak?

Transmission malfunctions are accompanied by characteristic sounds, which determine the area of the breakdown. In addition, there are other factors that are a signal for repair of the unit.

If there is noise in the gearbox, the bearings or gears are most likely worn out. The problem can be corrected by replacing parts. The problem may arise due to a lack of the required amount of lubricant. In this case, it is necessary to add fluid to the automatic transmission urgently.

An automatic transmission oil change on a Grant may be required as a result of a leak being detected. Before you begin the filling procedure, it is necessary to determine the cause of the oil leak. Characteristic spots on a problem area or puddles of liquid on the asphalt will indicate a damaged unit.

The most common cause of oil leakage on LADA GRANTA is:

  • wear of oil seals, hinge or rod - the problem can be corrected by replacing damaged parts;
  • loose fastening of the crankcase, box cover or poor sealing of the assembly - it is recommended to replace the gaskets or sealing agent.

What's the result?

As you can see, the automatic transmission, despite the assurances of the manufacturers, also needs a partial or complete oil change. In this case, special fluids for automatic transmissions (ATF) are used. A complete high-quality replacement can only be done in a car service center, since in a regular garage there is no special equipment that completely removes oil from the box (displacement method).

We also recommend reading the article about the advantages and disadvantages of the Lada Granta with an automatic transmission. From this article you will learn about what kind of automatic transmission is installed on the Lada Granta, what is the reliability of the unit, what features does this automatic transmission have on the Granta, etc.

The choice of oil for automatic transmission Lada Granta is quite simple. You can look for analogues, but there is not much point, since replacement is not carried out often, so it is not worth saving and risking the box. In other words, in order to understand what kind of fluid to fill in the Lada Granta automatic transmission, you should study the manual separately, and then purchase the recommended fluids.

AvtoVAZ designers were faced with the task of finding an automatic transmission for the Lada Grant that would be reliable, inexpensive to operate and fit into the budget of the cheapest VAZ car. The Japanese automatic hydromechanical transmission Jatco JF414E became such an automatic transmission. We will deal with it now.

How to change the lubricant in a manual transmission with your own hands?

You can change the oil in a manual transmission with a cable yourself.

How often does it change?

The service life of lubricating fluid in mechanical units is also 5 years or 75 thousand kilometers. If the car has passed this interval, the oil must be changed.

What oil is better to use?

The manufacturer recommends pouring exclusively Lukoil TM-4 oil. This lubricant passed all studies and tests in AvtoVAZ laboratories and was recognized by the manufacturer. Lukoil TM-4 lubricants with various types of viscosity are supplied to the market. Depending on the region in which the machine will be used, the consumer is given a choice of liquids of the standard 75W-80, 75W-85, 75W-90, 80W-85 or 80W-90.

Checking the oil level and required amount

On older mechanical transmissions with a cable drive, the oil meter is located in the same place, in the engine compartment under the plastic housing of the air purifier. If the gearbox is equipped with a dipstick, then you can check the level of the substance in the unit in the same way as on an automatic transmission. But if your car is equipped with transmission number 2181, then such gearboxes are not equipped with meters. To check the fluid volume, you will have to unscrew the control screw on the transmission unit. Ideally, the lubricant should be near the bottom edge of the hole.

The oil volume depends on the type of gearbox. Mechanical units with number 2180 contain about 3.1 liters of lubricant. Manual transmission 2181 can hold about 2.2 liters of lubricant.

User Oleg Zuyeff in his video showed how to change the oil in a Granta gearbox with a cable drive.

Preparing for replacement

What to prepare for changing the lubricant:

  • wrench size 17, it is more convenient to use a socket with a tip;
  • fresh gearbox lubricant;
  • watering can or funnel;
  • a hose with a syringe if your transmission is not equipped with a filler hole;
  • a container in which used lubricant will be collected;
  • rags.

Stages of work

How to change the oil yourself:

  1. Drive the car into a garage with a pit or onto an overpass. The process of changing the fluid must be carried out on a warm, but not hot, engine. The machine must be on a level surface.
  2. Raise the parking brake lever inside the car. Open the hood and loosen the screw on the negative terminal of the battery, then disconnect it. We recommend placing wheel chocks under the wheels of the Lada Granta.
  3. Reach under the bottom of the car and find the drain plug on the transmission housing and assess its condition. If the area around the lid is dirty, clean it with a cloth to remove dirt. This will prevent them from entering the vehicle's gearbox lubrication system.
  4. Place a bucket or basin under the drain plug; a cut bottle will also work. Use a wrench to unscrew the cap and set it aside. When dismantling, keep in mind that oil may splash out after unscrewing, so use gloves. The process of draining the working fluid will begin.
  5. Once all the grease has been drained, replace the drain bolt. If the seal on it is worn out, it must be replaced.
  6. After this, new fluid is filled in. For greater convenience, we recommend removing not only the body of the cleaning device, but also disconnecting the clamps securing the expansion tank pipe. The air filter housing must be removed or moved to the side.
  7. Remove the dipstick from the filler neck. Place a watering can in it. If there is no hole for the meter in your car, then install a hose into the control neck, to which connect a watering can or syringe. Fill in fresh fluid, constantly monitoring its volume. Start the car and do a test drive, after which check the oil level again. The substance level should normally be between the MIN and MAX marks on the dipstick.

Do-it-yourself instructions for changing the oil in an automatic transmission Lada Granta

Before replacing, you must first select the required oil in the automatic transmission. We have already told you what kind of oil goes into the Lada Granta automatic transmission. For a partial replacement we will need about 1 liter of transmission fluid. Although the total volume of oil in the Lada Granta box is 5.1 liters.

What is required for a partial replacement?

1. Transmission oil in the required volume 2. Container for collecting used oil 3. Funnel with extension hose 4. Lint-free cloth 5. 19″ wrench 6. 5″ hexagon

Stages of work completion

If the vehicle has engine protection installed, it should be removed for convenience before performing work.

1. We drive the car onto a pit or lift. 2. Warm up the engine to operating temperature. We wait until the cooling fan works and turn off the engine.

1 — Automatic transmission housing 2 — Drain plug 3 — Overflow plug

3. Using a 19″ wrench, unscrew the drain plug and move it to the side (2). 4. Use a 5″ hexagon to unscrew the overflow plug and drain the used oil (3) into the prepared container. 5. When the oil is drained, replace the overflow and drain plugs, after wiping them with a napkin. 6. After this, for convenience, you should remove the air filter housing to gain access to the automatic transmission dipstick. 7. We take out the automatic transmission probe and insert a pre-prepared hose with a funnel into the probe hole. Fill the box with new oil. It is necessary to fill in the same amount as was drained. 8. Start the engine and engage each gear with a slight delay. 9. Turn off the engine and check the oil level in the box using a dipstick. The level should be between the Min and Max marks. The test should be carried out on a heated box.

This completes the oil change in the Lada Granta automatic transmission. Agree, isn’t it difficult? Now let's talk about checking the oil level.

General Tips

An automatic transmission is more sensitive to dust than a manual transmission. This is worth considering. When changing the oil, make sure that all tubes with funnels are clean.

Do not increase the temperature of the box too much. An increase of 45 degrees would be optimal. And in an automatic transmission, you can replace the lubricant with a “cold” one. But if you want to get greater efficiency, then it is better to warm up the box. But then you will need to heat up the new oil.

When measuring the volume of drained lubricant, its temperature should be taken into account. Hot liquid tends to expand.

In case of incomplete replacement, about 3 liters of lubricant are consumed. In general, the crankcase contains 5.4 liters. Genuine EJ-1 ATF and Nissan ATF Matic-S transmission oils can be used for replacement.

Incomplete or partial replacement

  1. Remove the transmission dipstick.
  2. Assemble a structure from tubes with a diameter of 8 mm. Place your hand in the hole to add oil.
  3. Start draining the waste liquid into a specially prepared container.
  4. Be sure to measure the volume of drained oil.
  5. Take a funnel with a tube. Add oil.
  6. Put the dipstick back. Reassemble the remaining components.

After the operations, the new oil in the gearbox will be mixed with the old one. But this will happen only after at least 200 km. Partial replacement can be done again.

As already mentioned, there is nothing wrong with mixing automatic transmission oils. But it’s better not to carry out such experiments with the engine.

Oil change on Grant: gearbox

So, although the 2181 gearbox has become more reliable, as in any other unit, it is recommended to change the lubricant periodically. Otherwise, the service life of the gearbox may be significantly reduced, and there may also be problems with the mileage during operation (noise, howling of the gearbox, problems with gear shifting, etc.);

At the same time, the rules for changing the oil in the AvtoVAZ gearbox determine that the oil needs to be changed only if it is necessary to repair the gearbox when disassembling it, and also if the mileage has exceeded 200 thousand km. In other words, the oil is filled for the entire service life of the car.

Please note that although the oil in a transmission, especially a mechanical one, does not experience the same loads as motor oil in an engine or ATF in an automatic transmission, it also tends to age, become dirty and lose its useful properties. Moreover, this happens, on average, by 80 thousand

km. mileage

You should also take into account the operating characteristics of the vehicle, the load on the transmission, the quality of the transmission oil itself, possible minor leaks through oil seals, gaskets and seals.

It is quite obvious that increased attention should be paid to the issue of the condition and level of oil in the gearbox. In simple words, the lubricant needs to be refreshed and changed.

As for the replacement itself, for these purposes you need to unscrew the drain plug, also unscrew the oil level control hole plug, drain the waste and pour fresh oil into the gearbox. Filling can be done through the reverse switch.

Many people are also interested in what kind of oil is poured into the Grant gearbox at the factory. As a rule, at the factory, Tatneft Translux 75W85 or Rosneft Kinetic Service 75W85 is poured into the 2181 Lada Granta box. These are GL-4 class oils. For a complete change, you need to have 2.2 liters of gear oil.

Taking into account the fact that the manual does not indicate what kind of oil to pour into a Granta box with a cable drive, you can select the products indicated above. You should also study the recommendations in the manuals for other models with gearbox 2181, which allows you to expand the list of oils, that is, use analogues.

For example, G-BOX Expert 80W85 or 75W90 oil is suitable; Gazpromneft 80W90 or 80W85, TNK TRANS KP 80W85 or TNK TRANS KP SUPER 75W90, LUKOIL TM-4 75W85, 75W80, 80W85, 75W90 or 80W90, Rosneft KINETIC 80W85, SHELL SPIRAX S5 ATE or TRANSAXLE OIL 75W90, etc. You can also select other analogues (Liqui Moly, ZIC, etc.).

The main thing is that the product meets class GL-4 or GL-4/GL-5, but not GL-5, as well as all tolerances and standards recommended by the manufacturer. The fact is that GL-5 oils, on the one hand, are considered a more modern option, but they are more designed to protect gears and loaded surfaces. At the same time, the gearbox synchronizers, which are made of soft alloys, wear out greatly.

Also, when choosing oil for the Grant gearbox, you need to take into account the temperature range within which a particular vehicle is operated. Briefly, if in winter the temperature does not drop below -12 and does not rise above +50 Celsius, then 85W90 oil is suitable.

A drop in temperature to -26 indicates the need to fill the box with 80W90. If the temperature rises above +35 in summer and drops to -40 in winter, then it is optimal to use 75W80 or 75W85 oils. In cases where the temperature rises to +45 in summer and drops to -40 in winter, then gear oil with a viscosity index of 75W90 is suitable.

ATF change timing

In order not to spend money on overhauling the automatic transmission, experienced car owners advise changing the oil in the gearbox after 65 thousand km of driving the vehicle.

Since negatively influencing processes occurring inside the machine, both due to the fault of the car owner and natural ones, contribute to the rapid production of lubricant.

Such negative processes include:

  • an increase in the temperature in the box when slipping or driving off-road, as well as in countries with hot climates;
  • cold and abrupt starts in winter;
  • dirty filter device.

The oil in the Lada Xray automatic transmission ceases to perform the functions for which it was intended. Namely:

  • protection of metal parts from wear;
  • lubrication of machine components;
  • automatic transmission cooling.

Attention! The Jatco JF414E automatic transmission is very picky about the quality of the lubricant. Therefore, cheap analogues will quickly disable it. The manufacturer indicates that the lubricant needs to be changed after 80 thousand kilometers

Experienced car owners and mechanics advise motorists who have a car with this gearbox to replace it much earlier than this period. Therefore, the recommended complete replacement, taken from practice, is 50 - 60 thousand kilometers

The manufacturer indicates that the lubricant must be changed after 80 thousand kilometers. Experienced car owners and mechanics advise motorists who have a car with this gearbox to replace it much earlier than this period. Therefore, the recommended complete replacement, taken from practice, is 50 - 60 thousand kilometers.

Partial replacement must be performed after the vehicle has driven thirty thousand kilometers. Beforehand, every 10 thousand kilometers, experts advise checking the lubricant in the automatic transmission and adding it if necessary.

How to replace engine oil and filter on a Granta with automatic transmission - step-by-step instructions

1. First of all, you need to drive onto an overpass (a hole or whatever you find instead...), put the car on the handbrake, and install wheel chocks. 2. Next, for convenience, turn the steering wheel as far as possible to the left, this will provide access to the drain plug. 3. Unscrew the filler plug. 4. Place a container to drain the oil, then using the hexagon on “8”, proceed to unscrew the drain plug. Be careful not to lose the cork. Changing the oil in an automatic Lada Granta engine is done “hot”, so be careful not to get burned by hot oil.

5. While the oil is draining, unscrew the oil filter; for those who don’t know, it is located under the hood. In some cases, the filter can be unscrewed by hand; if this does not work, we take a special wrench to unscrew the oil filter. If you don’t have a special key, the “old-fashioned way” will come to the rescue. I have talked about it several times, so I won’t go into details. Briefly, I will say that the essence of this method is to unscrew the oil filter using a screwdriver, it breaks through the filter housing, after which the screwdriver acts as a reliable hook arm, which actually unscrews the oil filter.

6. When the oil is drained, we wipe away the stains and proceed to the second stage - directly replacing the oil and oil filter on the Lada Granta automatic transmission. 7. First you need to prepare a new filter. To do this, pour oil into the filter and lubricate the filter O-ring. Oil is poured in order to prevent “engine oil starvation” in the first minutes of engine operation after changing the oil.

8. Next, install the filter in place and tighten it by hand. 9. Now tighten the drain plug, do not forget about the aluminum washer. According to the manual, the drain plug should be tightened with a torque wrench with a tightening torque of 17–22 N•m. If there is no key, simply tighten it until it stops, carefully so as not to twist the thread.

10. When the plug is tightened, you can pour clean oil into the engine. Take a watering can and a canister and pour the required amount of engine oil into the engine. According to the instruction manual, a little more than 4 liters need to be filled into the Lada Granta engine with automatic transmission. oil ~4.1 l., models with manual transmission include one liter less - 2.9 l. 11. Start the engine to fill the oil system with oil. When the oil pressure warning light goes out, turn off the engine and check the oil level. As you know, the correct oil level is the level that is between o and “MAX”. Top up if necessary. 12. Tighten the filler plug and begin assembling the tool.

I accurately measured the marks on the dipstick on both sides, cold and hot

I came to the dealer with the same problem... They accepted it, warmed up the car thoroughly while accelerating (they didn’t measure the temperature in the automatic transmission)... and let’s measure the level... and they found it to be in the middle! But I don’t know how many degrees there were in the box!——-When I measured it myself, the level was also below the minimum.

Why here

won't you ask?

There are also cheaper analogues, for example Aisin ATF AFW+ made in Japan.

The officials have two interesting letters from AVTOVAZ (I saw them myself): 1. Instructions to use only NISSAN ATF Matic–S;2 in automatic transmissions. Instructions for customers to check the dipstick in the automatic transmission. The letter contains drawings of two types of straight probes. One is standard, the length of the metal part of the probe is 14 cm. You can trust the notches on this probe. The second dipstick (metal part) is 16 cm. The notches on it do not correspond to the real ATF level, because the notches are made at the same distance from the edge of the dipstick as at 14 centimeters. Based on the results of measuring the ATF level in the automatic transmission, I added 400 grams. Letters You can request it from the officials for review. If your dipstick is curved (like a snake), these letters do not concern you. PS The official price for the NISSAN ATF Matic–S is 500 rubles. more expensive than in the retail network. At least in Smolensk.

Useful information. Thank you. Should I add ATF directly into the neck where the dipstick is or something else? Thank you.

Add ATF directly to the filler neck where the dipstick is if the level is below normal.

Good day to all. One of our clients has a Lada Granta car with an automatic transmission. Before this, he constantly bought oil for the engine, and today he decided to change the oil in the box. And accordingly, he had a question about choosing an oil in Grant’s automatic transmission. That is why I decided to write this article. By the way, if the topic of domestic cars has already begun, I recommend that you read the article at your leisure: Oil in the VAZ 2110 gearbox.

The Lada Granta with automatic transmission appeared on the Russian market not so long ago. An ordinary Granta was taken, the familiar mechanics were taken out of it, a Japanese Jatco JF414E automatic was installed and the whole thing was put into production. Here is the recipe for the famous Granta on the machine. In principle, the machine itself is quite reliable. And with proper maintenance and attitude it will not cause any trouble. Although today this machine is installed only on a couple of models. This is our Granta and Nissan March (Micra).

Functions of motor oil

Except for bearing lubrication, without which they would not work for any significant time. oil performs several functions, each of which is worthy of separate consideration:

  • lubrication of rubbing parts, especially sliding bearings of the crankshaft and timing shaft;
  • removal of excess heat from friction points to further increase the service life of parts;
  • cleaning the parts of the piston group and the gas distribution mechanism from carbon deposits and soot;
  • the formation of a protective layer that protects engine parts during startup when there is no oil pressure.

Automatic transmission "Grants"

The manufacturer installs a Yatko box on cars. It was possible to create an automatic transmission that is practically immune to difficult operating conditions. The automatic machine is installed mainly on models in the “Lux” configuration. Cheaper models have a “robotic” gearbox. A car with this transmission is capable of accelerating from zero to 100 km/h in 13.3 seconds. Maximum speed – 173 km/h. This is quite enough for the city and traveling on the highway.

Among the features of the automatic transmission, one can highlight the lever. It is made in a classic form, but in the form of a ladder - this made it possible to save the driver from possible problems. The automatic transmission drive is cable. This is an old but reliable scheme. The box has protection against erroneous switching on. If the car is moving in any gear, it will not be possible to change into another. An electronic unit controls the operation of the mechanism.

There is also protection against overheating. If the car is operated at low temperatures, then it is better to warm up the gearbox by holding the car on the brake with the gear engaged. If you do not perform this action, certain problems may arise. Until the automatic transmission warms up, the torque converter will be blocked and it will not be possible to engage the gear.

How to change the fluid in a VAZ Granta machine?

Recently, significant changes have occurred in the Russian automotive industry. The AvtoVAZ company managed to equip its cars with an automatic transmission. One of the first models to have an automatic transmission was the Lada Granta. It received technical characteristics similar to international standards.

Grant was equipped with a Yatko machine gun. The box turned out to be very resistant to difficult operating environments. Since last year, the machine began to be produced only in a luxury configuration. An inexpensive “robot” was installed on other Grants. Visually, the Lada Granta with automatic transmission has no differences from its relative with manual transmission. But its fuel consumption is higher.

Some features of the replacement process

Changing the oil in the gearbox, performed in violation of the technology, can significantly damage the car and even completely disable it. You should pay attention to any nuances, of which there are not so many during the work process:

  1. Brand of oil. For a machine box, it would be more advisable to choose a certified product with a number of appropriate licenses. The packaging usually lists the technical features of the machines for which a particular product is oriented. Combining different oils or choosing a type that does not correspond to the make of the car is strictly prohibited.
  2. If you cannot unscrew the drain plug, it is recommended to seek help from a specialist. Prolonged mechanical impact can bend parts and also render the entire mechanism unusable.
  3. Oil level. The volume of lubricant that is below the minimum mark of the Lada Granta automatic transmission for a long time can allow air to be sucked directly into the oil pump. The consequence of this will be reduced oil pressure in the engine with subsequent failure of its operation. The car will stall until it is repaired by a professional mechanic. Too much oil will likely overflow through the pan and, if the engine overheats, can cause the car to catch fire.

When pouring oil into the gearbox for the first time, it is recommended to seek the help of a more experienced car enthusiast, who will immediately point out all the intricacies of the process. Thus, the entire procedure will take up to 30 minutes and will not require significant financial costs, with the exception of purchasing the automatic transmission oil itself.

Not so long ago, a new era began in the Russian automobile industry. AvtoVAZ finally managed to equip a Russian car with an automatic transmission. The first attempt of the pen was Grant's fret, moving further and further from the usual, unchanging classics. It has technical characteristics increasingly similar to international standards.

So, they started installing an automatic machine from Jatco on the Granta. The four-speed hydromechanical JF414E (AY-K3) from the Nissan subsidiary has already been installed on the Nissan Almera, March and other models, and for more than two decades. A fairly reliable hydraulic unit, a simple design without bells and whistles, time-tested, low price - it was not easy to find something similar among Europeans and Americans. The characteristics of the box are quite suitable even for modern cars.

Externally, the Lada Granta with automatic transmission is no different from its mechanized counterpart.

Consequences of overflow

This phenomenon can have a very negative impact on the gearbox. When oil is in excess, it tends to foam. This condition leads to a loss of lubricating properties, since air begins to “lubricate” the part instead of oil. The result is failure of the automatic transmission, since the parts begin to burn without receiving adequate lubrication. In addition, foaming causes transmission fluid to leak through the breather.

You can check the condition of the box by carefully inspecting the oil fluid. If the automatic transmission is not damaged and operates normally, the lubricant is red in color, the liquid does not contain any dark-colored foreign particles, such as solid particles. If the ATF is dark in color and smells burnt, the automatic transmission is destroyed. The solid particles that can be seen on the dipstick are the result of the destruction of the clutches and brake band.

Why might oil leak?

Transmission malfunctions are accompanied by characteristic sounds, which determine the area of the breakdown. In addition, there are other factors that are a signal for repair of the unit.

  • wear of oil seals, hinge or rod - the problem can be corrected by replacing damaged parts;
  • loose fastening of the crankcase, box cover or poor sealing of the assembly - it is recommended to replace the gaskets or sealing agent.

  • Transmission oil in Granta automatic transmission;
  • Container for draining waste;
  • Hose and funnel;
  • Clean rags;
  • Keys: 19 and hexagon 5;

What's the result?

Taking into account the above information, it becomes clear that changing the oil in the automatic transmission should be done regularly. It is important to use a lubricant recommended for a specific type of transmission.

You should also strive to update the oil in the box to the fullest extent possible, especially if this procedure has not been carried out before and the fluid in the automatic transmission has changed color/smell, lost its properties, is contaminated, etc.

We also recommend reading the article about what kind of oil to fill in the Lada Granta automatic transmission. From this article you will learn about the original oil and analogues that can be used in this type of transmission. Also, when trying to change the oil in a Lada Granta automatic transmission yourself, you must check the level of ATF fluid in the unit, since underfilling or overfilling can cause failures work, increased wear and premature failure of the automatic transmission.

When performing a partial replacement, it is necessary to fill in exactly as much oil as was previously drained from the box into a previously prepared container. If doubts arise about the total amount of oil, then you need to carefully adjust the level on the automatic transmission dipstick. Measurements are taken “hot”, that is, when the gearbox is warmed up.

Let's start with the fact that the oil in an automatic transmission performs the same functions as in an engine: lubrication of rubbing surfaces, cooling, and transfer of small metal particles (chips), which are formed as a result of friction of parts against each other, to the oil filter.

Moreover, unlike a manual transmission, the most important function of oil in an automatic transmission, which few people remember, is to transmit torque from the engine flywheel to the planetary gears when the torque converter (GDT) is operating.

For this reason, separate special transmission fluids are produced for manual transmissions and automatic transmissions, which differ in properties. Automatic transmissions use ATF with a high viscosity index. The products have a mineral or synthetic base and a set of additives (anti-corrosion, stabilizing, anti-foam, anti-wear, and so on).

Like many other lubricants, ATP in the box tends to “age”. In other words, you need to know when to add or change the automatic transmission oil. As a rule, manufacturers of cars with automatic transmissions assure that they are filled with ATF for the entire service life and do not need to be changed throughout the entire period of operation.

When it comes to imported cars that are driven exclusively on European roads and have been in use for no more than five years, this recommendation is relevant. However, taking into account domestic conditions, as well as the fact that most car owners in the CIS do not have the opportunity to change their car not only after five, but also after ten to fifteen years, the ATF has to be changed.

Moreover, experts recommend doing this every 40-60 thousand km. This approach allows you to increase the service life of the unit and improve the quality of its work. The following are cases when it is necessary to carry out the procedure for changing the oil in the machine:

  • Automatic transmission repair (full replacement);
  • there were difficulties with shifting gears (replacing or topping up);
  • noisy operation of the gearbox on a cold engine;
  • extraneous metallic noises in the box (indicates wear of parts);
  • drop in oil level in the automatic transmission;

If any of the listed problems occur, as well as during active use of the gearbox (off-road, specific aggressive driving style, sudden changes in outdoor temperatures, etc.), it is necessary to initially check the oil level and assess its type/condition.

Carrying out an oil change in a Grant automatic transmission with your own hands

The automatic transmission on the Lada is equipped with a reliable hydraulic unit. Its average service life is 120,000 km. For preventive purposes, the condition of the transmission oil should be checked every 10,000 km.

The total volume of the automatic transmission is 5.1 liters. When a partial oil change is required, approximately 3 liters are needed.

The main stages of incomplete replacement:

  1. The car warms up, after which the Lada is driven onto the overpass.
  2. Access to the box is provided (the battery is disconnected, the filter housing, corrugation, and pipe are removed).
  3. You need to place an empty container under the gearbox.
  4. The control probe is removed.
  5. The used oil is drained.
  6. New oil is added through a funnel.
  7. The dipstick is put back.
  8. The removed parts are being assembled.

What is required when performing a complete fuel change in a gearbox? Among the tools you should arm yourself with: a wrench, a hexagon. Additional accessories: empty container, funnel with hose or refill syringe.

Complete replacement instructions:

  1. Open access to the box.
  2. The battery is turned off.
  3. The air filter is removed.
  4. Use a wrench to unscrew the drain plug.
  5. The oil should drain into a prepared empty container (more than 5 liters).
  6. The cap is screwed in after the liquid has drained.
  7. New oil is poured through the filler hole using a tube connected to a funnel. All excess will come out through the existing holes at the bottom.
  8. The pan has magnets that attract metal elements that may appear in the oil, for example, as a result of gear wear.
  9. An air filter is installed.
  10. The engine turns on, thanks to which all excess lubricant drains.
  11. The filler plug is screwed in.

In order not to cause damage to the car system of the Grant model, the car owner should entrust all work to professionals. At the service station, automatic transmission diagnostics are carried out using computer equipment, the amount of oil in the box is checked, and all worn elements are replaced with similar ones.

Where did this opinion come from?

According to legend, when a future driver is just studying at a driving school, he learns this “life hack” for manual transmission and arguments in its favor from instructors of varying degrees of advancedness.
The trick is that if you depress the pedal before starting the engine, you will avoid a jerk and a possible impact with the car in front, and also make it easier to start the power unit by removing the load from the gearbox. The first argument applies mainly to situations where a novice driver is trying to get out of a tight parking lot and starts the car in gear. But many readers remember their training in a driving school, how the instructor “trained” them to always check neutral before turning on the ignition and explained why they actually squeeze the clutch before starting the engine.

Oil change tool

So, before changing the oil in the gearbox, you need to make sure you have all the necessary tools

. Below is a list of those:

1. Open-end and spanner wrenches (size - 17, 19, 22, 24); 2. Flat screwdriver; 3. Container for used oil (canister or bottle of 4 liters or more); 4. Plastic container 1.5 liters; 5. Cutting object; 6. Jack; 7. Metal brush; 8. Clean rags; 9. Sealant (optional).

It is also advisable to have some kind of stands for the car in the form of bars and protective gloves for your hands.

The main purpose of lubricants for automatic transmissions

The condition of road surfaces on Russian highways is not of high quality, so when driving a Grant on our roads, you will have to change the oil in the gearbox much more often than recommended.

Transmission oil performs the following functions:

  1. Reduces the friction force between the mating surfaces of working parts and assemblies.
  2. Removes heat.
  3. Cleans parts from wear products in the form of harmful deposits.

During the operation of the automatic transmission, the lubricating fluid gradually evaporates, is spent on the formation of a protective layer, and collects metal dust, shavings and other wear elements. External factors have a significant influence on the intensity and degree of oil aging:

  • driving habits;
  • temperature changes;
  • quality of the road surface.

Aggressive driving (sharp braking, rapid acceleration from a stop, frequent downtime in city traffic jams, etc.) leads to accelerated wear of the automatic transmission oil.

Thermal changes negatively affect the viscosity of the oil. The additives included in gear oil quickly lose their beneficial properties with sudden changes in temperature.

The service life of the chassis, power unit, and gearbox depends on the quality of the roads. Drivers of Lada Granta cars are forced to frequently change the oil in the automatic transmission.

Automatic transmission Jatco JF414E for Lada Granta. Features and resource

Many believe that engineers found an old and unclaimed automatic transmission for Granta, which is completely contrary to reality. Yes, this is not a state-of-the-art automatic, but the gearbox went into production only in 2010 and has already shown itself to be excellent on the Nissan Micra, Almera, Geely MK, Datsun ON-Do, ME-Do, as well as on the VAZ Grant and Kalina. Jatco JF414E was developed in principle for the domestic Asian market, where it works on many small cars to this day.

Automatic transmission Lada Granta Jatco JF414E

Aisin's AW60-40 gearbox was considered as a competitor to the Jatco JF414E 4-speed automatic transmission, but due to its relative high cost, the engineers chose Jatco. The box is designed for front-wheel drive and to work with engines up to 1.6 liters. Features an electronic shift control that controls the valve body and torque converter, electric control solenoids for smooth operation and seamless torque transmission. The service life of an automatic transmission before complete overhaul is 300-400 thousand km. And this is a very good indicator for a machine in the mini and micro segment.
