How to change the oil in a Lada Kalina box

Routine replacements are carried out by official dealers, as well as independently if you have a lift or a garage with a pit, a set of keys, an oil filter and 2 funnels for draining and filling the substance. In terms of its order, the change process does not differ depending on the type of gearbox and is divided into 2 types - full change and partial topping up.

Complete oil change in the Lada Kalina gearbox

A complete oil change on a Lada Kalina with a cable gearbox is carried out in several stages:

  1. Lifting the car on a lift and measuring the level of the liquid using a dipstick or test plug.
  2. Drain the used old fluid by unscrewing the drain plug at the bottom of the housing. The average time for liquid to drain is about 1-2 hours, depending on its consistency.
  3. When working with the machine, it is necessary to open the box body, clean the seams from old sealant and replace the oil filter along with the magnets, and also diagnose them for the presence of metal shavings.
  4. On a manual transmission, the oil filter is located on the housing, which does not require additional opening.
  5. After replacing the filter, it is necessary to fill in a new substance.
  6. Then you should start the engine and, standing still, switch all gearbox operating modes so that new oil gets into the seals and other parts. In this case, there should be no vibrations, gears should shift smoothly and softly.

The engine air filter should not interfere

The air filter box in Granta and Kalina-2 cars is secured with three rubber stops. It will not be difficult to dismantle them, but first you will need to disconnect all the connectors attached to the box from the outside. You will also need to remove the adsorber valve. And only then, without fear of damaging anything, the plastic box is taken to the side.

The cylinder to which the corrugation is attached is the mass air flow sensor module. This module has one connector. Disconnect it, and it is better to leave the clamp holding the corrugation in its original form.

The result of all the work done looks like this:

The filter box is simply folded back

The steps mentioned above are listed here in order:

  1. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery;
  2. Disconnect the clip “1” that holds the power wire and disconnect the connector “2” of the mass air flow sensor (Fig. 1);
  3. Dismantle the canister purge valve. Disconnect the connector with the wires, then use a flat screwdriver to press the spring on the side and remove the module itself from the grooves (Fig. 2);
  4. All stops holding the box can be easily removed from the slots (Fig. 3).

The connector that needs to be disconnected in “step 2” will not be available in configurations with motor 21127.

    Changing transmission oil

    The design of the cable transmission includes a drain plug, which is typical for all manual transmissions. The control and filler hole here is closed with a separate plug, but you can fill liquid into the crankcase not only through it.

    A reverse switch is attached to the top of the unit body (see figure). And if this part can be unscrewed, then the replacement will be easier than according to the standard AvtoVAZ manual.

    Cable gearbox VAZ

    In the figure the numbers indicate:

    1. Reverse switch;
    2. Drain plug. It is accessible from the bottom. The screw is unscrewed with a 17 key;
    3. Control filler plug. You need to unscrew it by placing the key on the battery side. A 17mm flat wrench will do if its handle is not too long.

    In reality, the details listed here look like this:

    Both of these screws are easy to unscrew

    There is no need to unscrew the control plug trying to get to it from the bottom of the car. As a last resort, you can perform the operation together using additional lighting.

    The procedure for changing gearbox oil will look standard:

    1. First, the control plug is not completely unscrewed;
    2. Unscrew the drain plug, placing a free container under it;
    3. The used oil is drained and the plug is tightened;
    4. After unscrewing the filler plug, replace the oil, then install all the parts in place.

    How to fill the box of Lada Kalina with oil

    To fill the liquid into the box, you must use a regular filler neck. The body of the box, regardless of its design, has a special filler neck covered with a stopper. In order to fill in new fluid when changing, it is necessary to unscrew this plug on the gearbox housing in the engine compartment (to the right of the engine) and pour in the new substance through a funnel. During normal filling, no other manipulations are required; when replacing, you must first start draining the old substance.

    Methods that are not recommended

    Liquid can be poured into the crankcase of box 2181 through a separate hole, which is closed by the reverse switch. The part in question will be clearly visible if you open the hood and remove the filter box:

    The connector is usually colored blue or red

    Dismantling this part is not easy. First, disconnect the connector, and to loosen the fastening, you will need a special socket wrench with a high head. The key size is 22mm hex.

    You can gain access to the internal volume of the gearbox in another way, which is not discussed here. Together with engines 21126 and 21127, a speed sensor is used, mounted on the top of the box casing. It will be easy to dismantle this unit, but after reinstallation the tightness is broken.

    The oil level in the gearbox is controlled as follows: the standard filler plug must be unscrewed, and as soon as the liquid begins to leak out onto the casing, topping up is stopped. It is advisable that the car be installed on a level surface. And it’s even better if the body is tilted to the right - excess transmission fluid has never hurt anyone.

    Hello!
    The mileage
    on the Lada Kalina 2 has exceeded
    67,000 km
    .
    I decided to change the gear oil in the gearbox. I started looking for information about what to fill
    and
    how to change
    the oil in the gearbox.
    I chose Neste Gear S 75W-90

    read
    how to change the oil in the gearbox here.
    I chose the option of dismantling the sensor
    (see callout No. 6, picture of gearbox 2181) on top of the gearbox to fill in new transmission oil.

    Algorithm for changing the oil in the Kalina 2 (2194) gearbox:

    1. We drive in Kalina for 15-25 minutes before changing the gearbox oil. 2. Raise the right (as you move forward) part of the body with a jack. We install the jack in the place for lifting the body with a jack, near the right (in the direction of travel forward) front wheel. 3. Drain the old oil from the gearbox. It will take a long time for the oil to drain from the gearbox. Fast and undulating at first

    , and then slowly and “drip”.
    15-25 minutes
    .
    4. We free access to the sensor at the top of the gearbox. We disconnect the pads from the mass air flow sensor, the sensor located on the air filter housing (under the mass air flow sensor). Remove the air filter housing. 5. Disconnect the sensor block (see callout No. 6, picture of gearbox 2181) of the gearbox, which is located on top of the gearbox. 6. Unscrew the sensor (see callout No. 6, picture of gearbox 2181) with a long head of 22. 7. Tighten the plug that was unscrewed when draining the old oil from the gearbox. 8. Without lowering the right side of the body, slowly
    pour 3 liters of oil into the gearbox. 9. Put everything back together in reverse order.

    Adviсe:

    -
    observe safety precautions when carrying out this type of work
    - disconnect the vehicle's ground -
    use a wrench
    to unscrew the sensor (see callout No. 6, picture of gearbox 2181) with a 22 socket -
    use a funnel
    to fill the oil into the gearbox - after pouring 2 liters of oil into gearbox, turn the hanging right front wheel several times - install rollbacks under the rear wheels and put the car on the handbrake

    A little about oil

    The Lada Kalina has a conventional five-speed manual transmission . It has been set since the days of the “nines”. Not long ago, Avtovaz released a VAZ-2180 with a cable drive . Oil is poured into the pan, it does not splash out and is not pumped up by the pump. Lubrication occurs in this way: the gears of the intermediate are dipped into the bath during rotation , thereby ensuring lubrication of the rubbing elements. Transmission fluid also provides heat removal, otherwise the box will quickly overheat . If the gears run dry, a large amount of wear . After this, it accumulates a brown tint over time . Therefore, it is necessary to keep level in the gearbox under control . For this procedure, Kalina has a special probe . If the oil level is below the average mark, it is better not to use , but to add transmission fluid.

    Which oil is best for manual transmission?

    Using a certain brand of oil saves car owners from the need for major repairs or replacement of a manual transmission. In terms of technical characteristics and purpose, transmission fluids are very similar to motor oils. A natural question arises: is it possible or necessary to pour a lubricant intended for power units into the gearbox.

    Experienced auto mechanics and official representatives of manufacturing plants have not yet given definite answers. However, they do not deny that in emergency situations you can pour motor oil into the manual transmission gearbox. Especially if the car is equipped with front-wheel drive (transmission of the torque of the power unit to the front axle). This is due to the unique cylindrical gear design in manual transmissions of front-wheel drive vehicles.

    Separation of oils for manual transmissions by viscosity degree

    The main difference between gearbox lubricants and motor lubricants is the oil viscosity indicator. Even visually they can be distinguished by their thickness: lubricant for engines is more liquid and fluid. The degree of viscosity of transmission substances is much higher than their motor counterparts. Before filling a manual transmission with oil produced for internal combustion engines, it is recommended to check how acceptable such an alternative is and how this will affect the technical characteristics of the vehicle as a whole. Motor oils are more affordable in price, however, if you pour incorrectly selected engine oil into the box, the likelihood of irreversible processes increases. Repairing a damaged gearbox will be very expensive for the owner.

    Gear oils are classified according to different classification methods. Viscosity division is carried out into classes according to the international SAE system. The SAE rating measures how thick or thin each substance is. Transmission oils are available in winter, summer and all-season varieties.

    Depending on the loads on the gears, oils are divided into standards Gl 4 and Gl 5. The most common option for manual transmissions of cars, buses, etc. are lubricants of the Gl 4 group. These formulations are designed for vehicle operation under heavy loads and high speeds. Unlike Gl 4, oils of the Gl 5 group are more suitable for axle gears.

    Choosing the best

    At the factory, TNK TRANS KP oil is poured into the car's gearbox , but the overwhelming number of car owners prefer to fill in fluids from other brands , most often foreign-made. Usually, when switching to oils from other brands, the noise coming from the gearbox is reduced service life , and even fuel consumption .
    To select oil for the Lada Kalina gearbox, you need to focus on viscosity . The following list will help you here:

    • Viscosity grade: 75W80 withstands temperatures from -40 to +35
    • Viscosity grade: 75W85 can withstand temperatures from -40 to +35 (but in terms of characteristics it is slightly ahead of the competitor)
    • Viscosity grade: 75W90 withstands temperatures from -40 to +45
    • Viscosity grade: 80W85 withstands temperatures from -26 to +35
    • Viscosity grade: 80W90 withstands temperatures from -26 to +45
    • Viscosity grade: 85W90 withstands temperatures from -12 to +45 and above

    What kind of oil to put in the box of Lada Kalina

    The best oil for the Lada Kalina gearbox is indicated in the vehicle's operating manual. However, the owner has the right to upload other materials of his choice. At the same time, the plant’s recommendations for brands are based on laboratory research and practical testing of products. There are 3 main types of transmissions on the market, which differ in their composition, viscosity, washing and cooling properties:

    1. The synthetic substance is the product of a complex chemical reaction with the addition of various additives to improve all functions. Such materials are well suited for changing the oil in the Lada Kalina 2 automatic transmission, given the complexity of the machine’s design. However, such materials are most often counterfeited, which, if low-quality material is used, can result in complete failure of the entire unit and its subsequent replacement. Synthetics have excellent cooling properties, which especially helps the unit maintain its functions in long city traffic jams.
    2. Semi-synthetic substances are also quite popular, since in addition to their good properties, such substances are cheaper than pure synthetics. Such materials are used on some models by the manufacturer itself. Most often they are poured onto cars after a mileage of 150 thousand km. This oil is suitable for the Lada Kalina Cross box, taking into account its primary use on bad roads and on highways.
    3. Minerals are most often added from the factory and must be completely replaced when due. This product has mediocre washing properties, but is less fluid, which makes it suitable for use in natural conditions with low temperatures.

    Transmission oils recommended by AvtoVAZ

    Experts recommend using oil with a viscosity of 70W80 to 80W85.

    • Rosneft
    • Shell
    • Liqui Moly
    • Lukoil
    • Castrol
    • Mobile

    It is also worth mentioning that the ZIC has also succeeded in the production of transmission fluids and is gaining a lot of positive reviews.

    The Lada Kalina car manufacturer recommends using the following brands of oil:

    • Lukoil TM4 with viscosity grade: 75W-80, 75W-85, 75W-90, 80W-85 and 80W-90
    • NOVOIL TRANS KP with viscosity class: 80W-85
    • Rosneft KINETIC with viscosity grade: 80W-85
    • TNK Trans KP with viscosity grade: 80W-85
    • TNK Trans KP SUPER with viscosity class: 75W-90
    • Trans KP-2 with viscosity class: 80W-85
    • Shell Transaxle Oil 75W -90

    The use of oil from TNK is justified in cases where the car has a low annual mileage (no more than 20 thousand kilometers).

    About the types of transmission oils for Kalina

    Traditionally, AvtoVAZ recommends products for use. Lubricant produced by the same company is poured into the gearbox of new VAZ cars; it acts as a break-in and flushing lubricant until the first maintenance; after replacing it, you can select a product from another company.

    Brand and volume of oil for LADA KALINA gearbox

    The manufacturer specifies that the new oil must be synthetic or semi-synthetic and meet viscosity grade SAE 75W-90. This is an all-season liquid that works at ambient temperatures from -40 °C to +35 °C. 75W-80 and 80W-85 oils are also suitable. 80W-90 liquids can be used in regions where winter temperatures do not drop below -10...-12 °C.

    In addition to viscosity, the oil must comply with API GL-4 class. This includes transmission fluids that are designed to operate in medium-loaded gears: hypoid, bevel and spiral-bevel, operating at oil temperatures up to +150 °C and contact pressure up to 3000 MPa.

    Let's consider which oils are most popular in the LADA KALINA gearbox.

    1. LUKOIL TM-4 (GL-4) 75W-90. This is a semi-synthetic transmission fluid used in manual transmissions, differentials and transfer cases of cars and trucks. It is made from highly purified mineral base oil, synthetic components and a multifunctional additive package. The oil has high anti-corrosion, anti-foam, anti-wear and viscosity-temperature properties. It reliably protects transmission elements under high loads, ensures smooth operation of the gearbox at low temperatures and has high oxidative and thermal stability.
    2. SHELL SPIRAX S4 G 75W-90 . Semi-synthetic gear oil API GL-4 for manual gearboxes of cars and small trucks. Used in VAG cars as a first fill fluid. The oil does not destroy synchronizers, ensures smooth operation of the gearbox, and protects transmission elements from shock loads, corrosion and wear. It has an extended service life and improves the performance of the gearbox.
    3. ZIC GF TOP 75W-90. Synthetic transmission oil for manual transmissions and drive axles. Compatible with synchronized boxes. In Hyuindai and Kia cars it is used as a first fill fluid. Belongs to material class GL-4/5. Meets the requirements of 75W-85 GL-4 oils. The fluid ensures reliable lubrication of all transmission elements at high speeds and heavy loads, cleans the gearbox and axles, increases the service replacement interval, reduces wear, protects against corrosion and has excellent thermal-oxidative characteristics.
    4. Castrol Syntrax Universal 75W-90. Synthetic multi-purpose gear oil for gearboxes and manual transmissions. Suitable for use in synchronized manual transmissions of cars and trucks, as well as final drives and differentials of trucks and construction equipment. The fluid has excellent fluidity at low temperatures and effectively protects against wear under high loads. It has an extended service life and is compatible with conventional mineral oils and sealing materials.
    5. LIQUI MOLY Hochleistungs-Getriebeoil GL4+ (GL 4/GL 5) 75W-90. Synthetic transmission oil for manual transmissions and drive axles. It is compatible with synchronizers and is resistant to aging. Thanks to a special additive package, the fluid reliably protects transmission elements. The oil prevents wear and corrosion, works well under high loads and maintains its characteristics at high temperatures. Can be used in gearboxes that require GL-4 oils and manual transmissions that are combined with a hypoid transmission.

    Self-replacement of transmission fluid in the gearbox

    If for some reason you cannot or do not want to carry out work at a service station , you can carry out this procedure yourself . To do this you will need the following tools :

    • a wrench set to “17” (preferably a box-type one);
    • funnel with a tube , which you can make yourself or purchase at the appropriate store. (no more than 50 cm in length);
    • the transmission fluid itself ;
    • containers for waste;
    • jack - it will help if you need to flush the manual transmission.

    Replacement frequency

    If we proceed from the recommendations of the automaker itself, represented by the AvtoVAZ company, then there is no specific frequency and period for changing the oil in the gearbox of the Lada Kalina car. According to their beliefs, it is not necessary to change the transmission lubricant in the gearbox; it is enough for the entire period of operation of the machine. In practice, the actual operating conditions of the vehicle significantly reduce the service life of the oil filled from the factory. Experts came to the conclusion that in order to maintain the efficiency and performance of the gearbox, it is better to replace it at least once every 50 - 80 thousand kilometers. If you use the machine less actively, then the frequency is determined in years and is no more than 4 - 5 years.

    If you haven’t driven about 50-70 thousand kilometers in 4 years, it’s still better to change the oil. It would be most correct to start from the current state of the transmission fluid. To do this, periodically check the oil, measure its level, top up, and if the lubricant wears out, change it completely in the Kalina gearbox.

    If the oil is not changed in a timely manner, you risk encountering:

    1. Wear of shafts and gears. This happens because the lubricant loses its original physical and chemical properties and stops cooling the parts. Further rotation of the elements provokes friction and overheating.
    2. Loss of chemical properties. This is where parts begin to wear out and metal shavings appear, which negatively affects the bearings.
    3. Failure of the entire gearbox. Carrying out a major overhaul or completely replacing the box in Kalina will not be such a cheap pleasure.

    Checking the oil level

    We place the car on a pit or a lift.

    1. Open the hood .
    2. Remove the air filter.
    3. Find the gearbox housing the dipstick from it to check the oil level. To get to it, you will have to stick your hand between the battery and pipe , which goes down from the air filter.
    4. Clean the dipstick rod from oil, then put it back in place until it stops.
    5. Take out the dipstick and check the level; it should be in the middle of the Min and Max , which are located on the rod.
    6. If the level is normal, put the dipstick back and replace the air filter.

    Checking the level, replacing and adding oil to a manual transmission

    You will need: key “17”, gearbox oil, a syringe or funnel to fill the transmission units, a clean cloth for wiping, a container to drain the oil.

    The manufacturer recommends checking the oil level after every 15,000 km, and changing the oil every 75,000 km.

    Note

    The gearbox should use gear oils with parameters not lower than SAE 75W-80, APA GL-4, 75W-90, SAE 75W-85 or SAE 80W-85

    Helpful advice

    It is recommended to drain the oil within 15 minutes after the trip, while it is still warm and has good fluidity.

    1. To check the level and to top up, you need to unscrew the plug in the filler hole, replacing the container in advance to prevent oil from leaking out.

    Location of power unit components on a car with an automatic transmission (bottom view): 1 – engine, 2 – gearbox, 3 – light suspension support for the power unit, 4, 7 – front wheel drives, 5 – gearbox drain plug , 6 – rear support from the power unit suspension.

    2. Check the oil level, which should be at the lower edge in the filler hole, or even slightly lower (you can reach the oil surface with a screwdriver or your finger).

    3. If necessary, add oil using a syringe until it flows out of the filler hole.

    4. Screw the plug away from the filler hole.

    The location of the hole plugs in a manual transmission for checking the level, adding, draining oil: 1 – hole plug for checking and adding oil, 2 – hole plug directly for draining the oil.

    5. To change the oil in the gearbox, you need to place a container under the hole to drain the oil from the gearbox housing.

    6. To make draining easier, you need to unscrew plug 1 from the filler hole.

    7. Unscrew plug 2 from the drain hole, then drain the oil.

    8. Clean the drain plug from metal particles and dirt, then tighten it.

    9. Fill the gearbox housing with new oil. This process is similar to the operations for checking the level and for adding oil, which are described above.

    10. Wipe the filler plug and then screw it back on.

    We drain the waste

    Drive onto a pit or overpass and use the handbrake or using improvised means to secure your car in place and pre -warm the engine .

    1. We place a pre-prepared container under the drain hole, where the used oil will drain
    2. Take a 17 key and unscrew the drain plug
    3. Wait for the used oil to drain, this can take up to 40 minutes .
    4. Then tighten plug .

    Note: if the used fluid is dark in color , it means it contains metal dust , sediment and other gearbox wear products. washing liquid into it . Then you need to jack up one of the drive wheels and start the engine by engaging first gear . Wait about 10 minutes, turn off the engine and drain the filled flushing fluid.

    Useful tips

    Before starting to operate the vehicle, it is recommended to carry out a visual inspection of the vehicle and the parking area. If drips and oil stains are found on the floor under the bottom, you need to check the oil level in the manual transmission. Even a small decrease in oil volume can lead to intense wear of the gears, followed by serious repairs to the transmission and the vehicle as a whole.

    One of the basic rules for changing oils and operating manual transmissions is that timely installation of new gaskets and oil seals instead of worn ones can help eliminate oil loss, and also prevent breakdowns and wear of gears.

    Each car shows different results for the oil filled. For some, only synthetics are needed, while others work fine with cheap mineral water. Most often, drivers choose the golden mean: semi-synthetics. The most important condition is maintaining stability of operation, as well as the technical and operational characteristics of the vehicle over a long period.

    Filling with new oil

    1. Remove the dipstick , since you will be pouring oil through the hole for the level indicator.
    2. Take a pre-prepared funnel and insert one end into the box.
    3. Fill in about three liters of gearbox oil. At the same time, check the oil level on the dipstick; it should be between the min and max marks.

    Now you need to drive 10-15 kilometers and look at the oil level indicator . If necessary, add the required amount of liquid.

    How to understand when it's time to change the transmission oil

    You can determine the need to replace the lubricant in the gearbox by its condition. Reduced transparency, dark color, foam and bubbles, the presence of metal shavings are signs that the substance has already exhausted its service life. The condition of the fluid can be assessed by standard checking its level. Also, the need to check the oil in the Kalina box is indicated by various malfunctions in the operation of the unit:

    • gearbox hum at high speeds;
    • spontaneous switching off of gears;
    • noise and jerking when changing modes;
    • Difficulty switching gears;
    • characteristic burning smell from the box.

    Oils used

    If you took the Lada Kalina from the factory and did not change the transmission oil yourself, then Magnum 300 lubricant from TNK was probably filled inside it. This is a standard liquid poured into the box at Kalina production. And in Kalina 2 they already use Kinetic SAE from the Rosneft company. Therefore, make sure what kind of car you have and what was initially filled there if you are just going to add fluid.

    is mineral, which can hardly be called high-quality and effective. In terms of characteristics, it is significantly inferior to many competitors. The reason for its use has a lot to do with its cheapness. It is optimal to change it to a semi-synthetic one, which will allow the box to feel comfortable under any operating conditions. According to car recommendations, it is better to use the following oils:

    • TM4 produced by Lukoil;
    • Kinetic company Rosneft;
    • Trans KP from Novoil;
    • Translux TM4-12 from Tatneft;
    • Trans KP and LZ Super produced by TNK;
    • Transaxle from Shell.

    Or you can select their analogues in accordance with their physical and chemical characteristics. All of them belong to API group GL4 and have viscosity classes from 75W-80 to 80W-90.

    Replacement procedure

    Based on the recommendations, you will be able to change the oil in the gearbox of a Lada Kalina car yourself. You may have at your disposal the first generation of the family or the newer Kalina 2. A distinctive feature is the location of the control hole on the side, and not on top of the crankcase. Plus, for convenience, it is recommended to move the air filter of the Kalina 2 power unit to the side. The engine filter is mounted on three rubber stops, which can be removed only after disconnecting all connectors on the box. Don’t forget to also remove the Kalinovsky adsorber valve. After this, changing the oil in the box will be much easier and more convenient.

    If you decide to change the transmission fluid on a Lada Kalina car yourself, then when working with the gearbox during an oil change, follow some rules, recommendations and sequence of actions.

    To get started, prepare everything you need. To work you will need:

    • open-end or socket wrench size 17;
    • a ratchet with a head of the same size (it is not necessary to use it, but it is more convenient);
    • watering can;
    • hose for watering can 30 – 40 cm;
    • new oil;
    • empty container for draining old lubricant;
    • pit or jack.

    Procedure for checking transmission oil in Lada Kalina

    To accurately measure the fluid level, the car must be placed on a platform with a flat surface. Before checking the oil in the Kalina box, it is advisable to drive a few kilometers and wait about 15 minutes. This is necessary so that the lubricant is warmed up, but has time to drain from the parts of the assembly. Further, the scheme of work depends on the type of transmission.

    First generation Kalina with manual transmission

    Cars produced from 2004 to 2013 were equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission with index 1118. This transmission has a rigid traction drive and is designed for torque up to 145 Nm. It was installed by the VAZ plant on first-generation sedans, hatchbacks and station wagons with engines up to 1.6 liters.
