Probably, in Russia no one needs to explain what a Lada Niva is. That’s what they call it all over the world, but here we just call it Niva. At one time, the Niva changed the shape of its trunk, and then, in 2015, a new model was created on its basis - the Lada Urban SUV. There are three differences between Niva and Urban: metallic paint, air conditioning, and the design of some external elements. But if the latest model is restyled, everything should change. New optics

A new optics option has been prepared for the entire 4x4 family. The new taillights are mechanically compatible with those produced since the 90s.

The interior of the Lada Niva Urban 2022 is almost completely identical to the standard version. However, photos of the interior indicate that this is a rich version of the model, equipped with almost all the options available for an SUV.

At the end of 2014, the concern introduced a modification of the Lada 4X4 - Urban. The changes mainly affected the appearance of the car. In addition, the Urban model features new seat and steering wheel designs. The design was developed by Briton Steve Mattin. The model is constantly being refined, and in 2016 a five-door Urban version was released. It is known for sure that the Niva 4x4 will not undergo major external changes until 2018.

We drove this car from Tolyatti to Naberezhnye Chelny, returned and drove it around the city and country roads for another week. The latest AVTOVAZ product at the moment left us with a partly nostalgic, but overall very strange impression.

I drove this car for a week and absolutely did not understand why it was needed. I really expect that now in the comments to this material there will be a person who will write: “Kesha, you don’t understand anything about cars. I always knew that you were just a home-grown ignoramus. After all, it is obvious that Lada 4×4 Urban 5d

absolutely indispensable in…” – and after the ellipses there will be a lot of examples of the use of this car. I will read all this and burst into tears - from grief, but also from happiness, because the truth will be revealed to me. But for now I am completely ignorant and confused. Honestly, I don't even know where to start.

Maybe I should tell you about how in the second half of the 1990s I worked at the VAZ OPP and assembled these same cars, the VAZ-2131, though still without plastic bumpers and the “Urban” sign on the tailgate? How was this car then completely perceived as a kind of logical expansion of the model range, even despite the fact that the bodies were pushed around the workshop by hand by grimy mechanics, and the doors on these bodies were leveled with hammers? Or maybe I’ll remind you of those “almost new Niva for the city” sentiments that were in the air in the public a couple of years ago, after the first presentations of the future Urban - all these stories about the electronically controlled transfer case, the refusal of the “lowering” gear, new wheels, lowered suspension and, what the hell isn't it, a new engine?

Or should I first confess my love for Niva as a phenomenon in the domestic auto industry? With this sauce, I could very well tell you the story of how the Niva became the first car for me that my dad let me drive on my own - that is, without holding me on his lap and without even looking after me from the passenger seat. Instead, that time my younger brother sat next to me and screamed with delight the entire time we were drifting in a white Niva through a snowy parking lot. And dad just stood at its edge and smoked thoughtfully. I have no idea why he did this then - we were very small and stupid, we could easily kill or injure ourselves, him, and the government car - but I am incredibly grateful to him for that act. Seriously, I can tell this story very emotionally, and maybe even squeeze a couple of milligrams of some liquid out of you.

What if I list all my adventures with a Lada 4×4, tell you all the times when the car surprised, delighted and helped me and my colleagues out during various test drives and runs? How did she always come in handy, how did she make even inveterate cynics fall in love with her, how did she break through where other SUVs failed? But, perhaps, it’s better if I tell you about how a week ago I was driving along the highway in a Lada 4×4 Urban 5d at a speed of about 90 km/h. It was a bypass around the city with two lanes in each direction. There was quite a lot of traffic around me - townspeople were in a hurry to get out of the urban... um. The townspeople were in a hurry to escape from the city. Suddenly a downpour hit us - the whole crowd simply drove under a huge cloud, which caused incontinence.

Visibility dropped sharply - large drops machine-gunned the glass, dozens of wheels raised splashes from the dusty asphalt. The steering column switches in this car are cheap (I’m not kidding), but realizing that now was not the time to be nostalgic, I stupidly pulled the right switch down, jumping through the “just wave the wipers” position to the “quickly wave” position.

Yes, yes, there are only two windshield wiper speeds. And on any of them, the “wipers” do not clean the area of ​​​​not very large glass very well, but the next second all this journalistic sugar was dissolved by KAMAZ, which poured several liters of water into my left ear - I slowed down, and he began to overtake. Squealing like a graduate, I groped for the front power window keys on the central tunnel (the long Urban still has “oars” at the back, despite the only possible Lux configuration) and closed the windows. And then I made a fatal mistake - feeling that it was noticeably colder in the cabin, I turned on the heater.

The windshield immediately fogged up. Moreover, “instantly” is not a figure of speech. When I say “instantly,” I mean that in one second the visibility went from poor to zero. Around me, still driving at a speed barely comparable to surviving a frontal impact, there was wet asphalt and a dozen cars... Do you think it’s taking me too long to tell you all this? Guys, I almost...

Almost having (as it seemed to me) avoided going around one of the roadside poles with Urban’s plastic bumper, I slowed down, pulled to the side of the road, opened the windows, laughed nervously, took a photo of the windshield with my phone and... continued to watch how I couldn’t see a damn thing through it. In order to at least schematically see the road, at some point I had to wipe the glass with my hand.

“Turn on the air conditioner, idiot!” some of the readers are already indignant. Okay, okay, let's turn on the air conditioning. This is a great way to dry the air in the cabin and get rid of moisture on the windows, yes. In general, it’s great that Niva finally has air conditioning. Very good.

  1. Fan switch on the center console. It must be turned on at one of two possible speeds - “zzzz” or “UIII”;
  2. The hot air slider, marked with a red triangle, should be in the closed position;
  3. The slider for the volume of air entering the cabin, marked with a blue triangle (remember, this is not cold air, it is just a damper that opens or closes the flow of air into the cabin) - it must be open.
  4. The air conditioning switch is located at the bottom of the center console.
  5. Rotary knob for air conditioning temperature on the right side of the steering column. You need to figure out which way to turn it, but you can do it. It also duplicates the “on/off” function of the air conditioner.

There's another slider on the center console that distributes air flow between the windshield and the cabin, as well as a "blower" handle, theoretically groped somewhere in the area of ​​your right shin and opening the flow of air to your legs, but for now you'd better not talk about that think. In general, it just seems complicated, and in fact, if you assembled an AK-47 at speed as a child, you won’t have any problems.

By the way, this is an amazing thing: once conceived as a purely “civilian” car with claims to the comfort of a “passenger car”, in 2016 the Lada 4x4 really evokes associations with military equipment. A couple of days before the episode with the fogged glass, I gave my mother-in-law a lift in a long-wheelbase Urban, and after a while I asked: “So, how?” She said that she liked that there was a lot of space in the back, but in general she had just watched a film about the GAZ-69, and was very surprised when she came out of the entrance and saw that I had come to her “in something similar.”

Later, on that same rainy day, two more women, my mother and her friend, expressed themselves in a similar way: when I stopped frantically rubbing the windshield with my limbs, coped with the microclimate in the Urban's cabin and took them on board, all they said was that the car brutal, powerful and generally very masculine.

But in fact, the Lada 4x4 Urban 5d is not an army guy. He is more of a country guy who really wants to pass for a city guy. He succeeds with varying degrees of success: the plastic bumpers fit inaccurately to the wheel arches (as do the wide moldings to the sides of the body), between the lower edge of the doors and the body a finger-thick gap is felt (and dust flies into it while driving), the left cup holder is blocked by the range lever (and therefore completely useless), the trunk shelf does not rise or fold when the tailgate is lifted, and besides, it partially blocks the 12-volt socket in the trunk, and the cutouts for the rear speakers are now pure fiction, because the rear coils are “stuck” into them belts moved from the rear pillars behind the seat backs as part of the fight against noise...

Probably, it really has become quieter in the back - at least, the old “reel-to-reel” ringing is really not audible, and my seven-year-old son, who was riding behind, did not complain about any particular noise. Moreover, he is already familiar with Niva and understands that if you find yourself in her womb, you need to be prepared for unexpected loud sounds.

In general, the new generation is better at navigating stressful situations - for example, when I first started the engine of the Lada 4×4 Urban 5d, I thought that a civil defense siren had gone off somewhere, but it turned out that under the hood the fan had just turned on because the engine was hot.

At the same time, the son noticed that there are no headrests in the back seat - he personally doesn’t need them, but he understands that it will be uncomfortable for adults. And this is true: the rear is uncomfortable, despite the room in the legs.

The slightly chaotic, if not futile, nature of the Niva’s modernization creeps in from all the cracks, even in small things: you open the hood and see that some of the clamps have already been replaced with screw ones, while others remain with less reliable tape ones. Of course, you only see this if you are already accustomed to the sight of a “spare wheel” in the engine compartment. Does anyone still want to say that this is a family trait? And, probably, due to the “family” nature, the interior still has a stretch ceiling made of leatherette?

And yes - its doors still slam with difficulty, the range and center differential switch with difficulty, the windows slowly fog up in humid weather... By the way, the same air conditioner that in the three-door version of the Lada 4×4 cools the interior tolerably is already present on the inside of the five-door not enough: if the temperature outside is approaching “plus 30”, you will be hot even with the extreme position of the cold “twist” and at the fan speed “U-I-I-I” (which, however, you will not turn on if you don’t want , so that it slightly mills your brain). And the ergonomics would be nice: the car is not even a month old, and the edging of the drainage gutter on the left side of the rear has already come unstuck and is puffing up “on its own,” and on the inside of the back door there is a barely noticeable focus of corrosion, completely devoid of any coating...

Do you live in the city, drive a B-class sedan, and suddenly for some reason you decided to buy yourself a new Lada 4×4?

Ok, imagine that you have to exchange your ordinary apartment for a fairly spacious concrete bunker with a metal roof as furniture. We have the latest, most modern modification of the bunker, so instead of a basin in the corner there will be a hole in the middle of the room, and on the wall there will be a telephone with a crank for communication with the outside world. True, you can only reach the commandant upstairs, and even then, he shot himself last month, but that’s something, you’ll agree. Why do you need a bunker? Well, it’s immediately clear that you’re not in the know: the bunker will be very useful to you in the event of a nuclear war!

But seriously, what is this car for? Just a couple of weeks before the Lada 4×4 Urban 5d was officially announced, I jokingly asked my colleagues: what about the five-door Urban? Then the majority thought that this was too bold a fantasy: they say, the three-door Urban is a very niche modification, why also a five-door?

Otherwise, this car repeats the usual Lada 4x4. You can remember the original colors, rims and something else, but it’s better to just admit that the idea with Urban didn’t work out even half of what was planned.

Let's try to imagine a person who will choose a five-door Lada 4x4 in the Urban version. This will probably be a driver who has already owned a Niva, who likes the fact that the cabin has air conditioning and heated front seats, that the bumpers on the outside are made of plastic (especially since there is a metal beam under the plastic), this person needs space in the rear of the cabin and it quite often uses permanent all-wheel drive for its intended purpose.

At the same time, it is not embarrassed by the archaic interior, ergonomic inconsistencies, weak engine, transmission noise, relatively high consumption, or the lack of roof rails, which would be in keeping with a “long” off-road body.

, but the lack of a 4×4 version, and even our hero’s strong attachment to the Niva, ultimately tipped the scales in favor of the Lada 4×4 Urban 5d. And yes, the SUV, with a price of 552,100 rubles, is almost fifty dollars cheaper than the Cross.

You know, I periodically have these thoughts: “Shouldn’t I buy a Niva?” It's great to have such a car. You just need to install wheels with a different rim design, redo the interior, do sound insulation, tint... well, and study the forums to understand what else needs to be done with the Niva. Of course, this car is capable of giving a lot of fun - even when you’re just driving it down the street, you feel like a conqueror of space - but I can’t imagine that the Niva is the main car in my family.

Lada 4×4 in any of its versions is ideal as a number two car. Like the bunker you have in case of nuclear war.

You rewatch Mad Max, turn into a post-apocalyptic warrior and go out with your friends to knead sand on a deserted beach. As the only car, Lada 4x4 can only be used by those who live in rural areas. This, you know, is a rather remote village, where the concept of “urban” comes down to the fact that cars do not have bare metal as bumpers.

I could joke that this article was ordered from me by the enemies of AVTOVAZ in order to undermine the sales of Lada 4×4, but the joke will not work: it is clear that this article will not change anything - the Niva has been bought and will continue to be bought. Those who did it five, ten and twenty years ago.

It is impossible to attract any new audience with the Urban modification, just as it is impossible to do this with the help of new colors, rims or stickers on the body. But the main issue with this car is the outdated 8-valve 1.7-liter engine. With a power of 83 horsepower and a torque of 129 Nm, the Lada 4x4 consumes a huge amount of fuel, preventing it from boasting normal dynamics. The VAZ-21214 engine may soon be replaced with a modern 1.8 liter VAZ-21179 engine with a power of 122 hp. with a torque of 170 Nm.
