The feeling of the seats is much more pleasant compared to the usual Kalina variation. The upholstery of the pillow and side support bolsters is dense, and the driver's seating position is higher. We continue to find out which is better of the two models Kalina or Kalina Cross.

The “cross” version of AvtoVAZ’s brainchild has 3 mm more ground clearance, which differs from its predecessor. Standard tires can also add clearance. The total is an increase of 7 mm. The manufacturer claims a total increase in height of 16 mm. Note that the springs in the shock absorber struts remained unchanged, only the support cups of the side members were shifted to the sides by 16 mm. Obviously, Kalina or Kalina Cross is better from the VAZ brainchildren.

In November 2014, I had 400,000 rubles, and I started looking for a car, taking into account that the car was under warranty, had a higher ground clearance and had power steering. At first I didn’t consider the VAZ at all, but I was faced with the problem that this money was not enough even for a Logan, and I categorically did not consider a loan and, on top of that, there were no cars in the showroom - only luxury trim levels.

I had to go with a heavy heart to the VAZ salon, and to my surprise there was the same situation - only luxury was available, and the rest was on order and had to wait. I sat in the samples on display, feeling that cars were not being made for people, and prices were being raised like foreign cars, and in the end I decided to take the Kalina 2 station wagon.

I called Togliatti, fortunately it is nearby, in the hope that there should be cars there, they offered me Kalina Cross for 409,000 rubles. I looked on the Internet, it seemed more interesting than all the other VAZs and the money was right for me, I decided to take it. As a result, I bought an 8-valve valve in white.

The Cross's interior is bright, but due to budget materials it quickly begins to creak. The sound insulation is poor, the seats are uncomfortable, and the glass in the doors does not go all the way down.

Electrics have become more reliable, and if something breaks, repairs and replacements are inexpensive.

The 8-valve VAZ 11186 requires adjustment of the valve clearances, but is not bad in terms of reliability. Sensors periodically fail, the thermostat gets stuck and oil leaks from under the valve covers. The 16-valve VAZ 21127 is equipped with hydraulic compensators and does not need adjustment. It is the same in terms of reliability, it has the same problems, including the danger of bending valves.

The manual transmission of the VAZ 2181 with a cable control drive is known for its howling, periodic lubricant leaks, and also the poor service life of the synchronizers. However, it drives well and is much more pleasant to operate than the old manual transmissions from AvtoVAZ.

Hello everyone.
So I decided to write a review about my first personal car, Lada Kalina Cross. I'll start from afar, perhaps. It was back in 2010, and that year the country's first recycling program was launched. At that time, our family had a VAZ 2105 made in 1992, and my grandfather had a 1970 kopek car. It was decided to give him the five and scrap the penny.

As a result, on June 22, 2010, our family got its first NEW car. Lada Kalina in the Standard configuration (the emptiest) in a station wagon body. At that time it cost 260,000 rubles, and taking into account the cash discount, we paid around 210,000 rubles for it. At that time, I think this is an excellent price tag for a new car.

Until recently, my dad and I used it in turns. Of course, this is beneficial, since all expenses for the car are divided in half, but it is terribly inconvenient in those moments when two people need the car at the same time.

Now the car remains with my father with a mileage of 69,000 km. During its operation the following broke:

— 3 wheel bearings (one is still factory)

— Stabilizer bushings

— We replaced the anthers with garnets (because they were cracked)

— At 58 thousand, the timing belt broke (the valves were not bent)

— The fifth door washer tube is broken

— The signal failed. It was subsequently moved to another location and now works flawlessly

— At 60,000 km, the check engine began blinking periodically. The service was not contacted. In view of this, the dynamics did not decrease, and the consumption did not change, so it was decided to simply leave everything as it is.

That's all the breakdowns. During this time, I think, not so much.

How did I come to choose Kalina Cross? At first I looked at used foreign cars (Ford Focus 2, Ford Focus 3, Lancer 10, Kia Sid, Chevrolet Cruze). I studied the forums of these cars and came to the conclusion that these cars do not have as few problems as they might seem.

In the Lancer, the 1.5-liter engine begins to consume oil over time, and not a little. The Ford Focus 3's headlights have been sweating since new, and there is also an age-old problem with the steering rack knocking, which is either fixed or not.

On the Chevrolet Cruze, there are floating speeds at idle and creaking calipers when reversing. The KIA Ceed has a weak chassis and liquid glass (many windshields cracked for no apparent reason).

Someone will ask - why am I describing this? Like, the review is about a completely different car. I just came to the conclusion that no car is perfect. All of them break and all have some kind of jambs. Well, the fact that you buy a foreign car does not guarantee that you will drive and not have any problems...

That's why I made a choice in favor of a new car - Lada Kalina Cross. Moreover, I already had experience of owning a new Lada. Still, driving a new car is cool. The car was purchased under a recycling program (yes, this is the second time our family has used it).

This time we passed the “A” mark. They asked to pay 451,000 rubles for the car, but the purchase as part of the recycling program allowed them to drop 50 thousand from this amount. As a result, I was more than satisfied with the price.

Technical characteristics of the cross-version of the Lada Kalina

The Kalina Cross car is built on the basis of the Kalina II family station wagon. The original suspension, a different tire size and a changed gear ratio of the main transmission pair are the main differences between these two cars. The steering rack travel was intentionally reduced by 3.6 mm (on each side) so that the wheels would not “rub” the arches. Note that for the cross-version the recommended tire size is 195/55 R15. It is not recommended for a station wagon, but there are several options to choose from.

The crossover, of course, weighs more than the station wagon, but the difference is only 15 kg, if we talk about the “Norma” configuration. The crossover body, moreover, is protected by an off-road body kit, and the rear part of the body is reinforced with additional elements. The remaining characteristics are listed:

  • Ground clearance of the Kalina Cross is 208 mm (for a station wagon - 23 mm less);
  • The maximum speed of the crossover is 165 km/h (engine 21116 + upgraded manual transmission);
  • The minimum turning radius is 5.5 m (5.2 m is typical for a station wagon).

In the suspension of a crossover and station wagon, only the springs are the same. Perhaps this will also be incorrect for the luxury version of Kalina Cross. We also note that the crossover “box” is equipped with synchronizers of a new design, which have not been used by AvtoVAZ before.

Features of fastening the plastic body kit

A well-known problem with Kalina cars was that the side moldings (linings), if provided in the configuration, were not attached to the body securely enough. The double-sided tape that holds the plastic part in place cannot always withstand the maximum load. If we talk about a crossover, here the moldings are attached to the doors using metal brackets, and not just with tape. This solution is universal.

During a large-scale test drive, carried out in fairly harsh conditions, the off-road body kit was not damaged on any of the Kalina test crossovers. Otherwise, negative results would definitely be reported in the media.

It is noteworthy that even before the start of sales, mixed reviews appeared about the VAZ crossover. We publish them:

Specifications

The engine range includes two petrol in-line power units. So, the base one is the eight-valve engine, familiar to us since the days of the G8. This engine is slightly modified and features distributed injection, thanks to which it produces 87 horsepower with a volume of 1598 cubic centimeters. It is worth noting that the increased ground clearance and cross body kit did not significantly affect the dynamic characteristics of the car. Acceleration to hundreds takes 12.7 seconds. The maximum speed is 165 kilometers per hour (for the standard station wagon - 168). Fuel consumption is quite acceptable. The car spends 7 liters of 92 per hundred.

In more expensive trim levels, a 16-valve power unit is already available, which, with the same displacement, already produces 106 horsepower. Acceleration to hundreds was reduced to 11 seconds. And the maximum speed has increased to 190. In terms of fuel consumption, the car spends 0.5 liters more than the previous unit.

The engine lives up to its stated power—acceleration is brisk. It's a pity that after 4000 rpm his enthusiasm sours. The gears are selected well, the shifting mechanism is quite accurate - no problems. And everything is not bad with the brakes (Lifan was the only one in the test with rear disc mechanisms). The mediocre information content of the drive prevented us from receiving a higher rating.

The X50 is not afraid of broken roads, except that the vibrations transmitted to the steering wheel are too much. Design and interior

The presented concept car has an ultra-modern design, and this is clearly visible in the photo. The color is chosen like most Renault Duster cars, due to the arrival of the French at the plant. The interior is also unusually good for a domestic car and is decorated with the most modern materials. The seats are leather, but there are conflicting data on the finishing of the panel: some claim that it is also covered in leather, others that it is made of high-quality glossy plastic. Minuses. After a week of use, the radio broke down, I went to the dealer near my house, they told me we can’t repair such cars, I was very surprised. I went to the central dealer, although it was far from home. There they explained to me that VAZ controls the repair of Kalina Cross and all replacements under warranty only through agreement with the factory, in Russian - this means a wait of up to 3 weeks.

The standard blades don’t clean the glass in cold weather, a month later the windshield wiper motor broke down - again an ambush, waiting and also statements from engineers that I broke it myself and repaired it in cash. They ended up replacing it under warranty.

When I bought it, the seller rubbed it in on me and on the VAZ website it also says that the rear-view mirrors are heated, in the end - just mechanics. To the question on the VAZ direct line, where is the heating? They answered that it was from the dealer in different configurations, only the configuration at the time of purchase came from the factory alone.

After the frost, the plastic body kit was all cracked all over, the black plastic had white-gray spots, the service center officially said that this was not a warranty case, not officially that the plastic was g..., that’s why everything cracked.

The suspension is on the right side, when you go over uneven surfaces, it jumps and knocks, the left side is quiet and graceful, the service department said that this is Kalina’s disease, and the factory forbade changing the struts under warranty if there are no leaks.

When asked directly by VAZ, they answered that there is no need to drive on uneven roads, their cars are not designed for this. And our roads now are like after the war. Pit on pit.

And the most amazing thing is that in my cabin there was just a swamp under the front seats, as if a bucket of water had been poured there, and the smell of rotten socks and desiccant did not cover the smell. The service center said that Kalin had a disease, they smeared something on the technical holes and somehow didn’t want to change the wet slotted spoon. Again, I’m waiting for VAZ to agree on what to do with the puddles in the cabin and the wet slotted spoon, I’m waiting.

The visibility is simply a miracle, I’m driving to the left, you can’t see the turn behind the left counter, you have to look behind the counter to see something on the left. I’m driving to the right, I’m 185 cm tall, I can’t see anything behind the rearview mirror. How did it happen that it is at eye level and blocks everything on the right - you also have to look behind it.

The engine runs like a diesel, weak for such a car. If there are 3 people in the car, then it no longer pulls and accelerates very hard. Consumption on the highway showed 6.7 liters, in the city - a stable 12.3 liters. And on the Internet they immediately announced increased consumption, with an increase in ground clearance, whoever has 8.7 liters. in the city it’s a publicity stunt. When changing the oil at the maintenance, I discovered that no more than a liter of oil had been drained, filled at the factory, I was completely shocked that the engine had not been knocked.

Water accumulates in the rear lights after washing, the warranty engineer responded to my remark and said when there is more water, we will replace it under warranty, I need it, such happiness.

The heater blows strangely, in the position on the glass and in the legs it only blows in the legs, the windows begin to fog up, switching to the windshield the windows come off - the legs are cold. If someone is riding in the back seat, the rear windows all fog up, you have to set the heater to the 3rd fan position so that the rear windows move away. The service department said it was normal.
