We torture the CVTs of the Lada Vesta sedan and SW Cross station wagon with mountains

The most affordable Vesta 1.6 (113 hp) with a CVT is a sedan in the Classic Start Plus configuration for 736,900 rubles. If the trim levels are equal, the additional payment for the 1.8 modification (122 hp) with manual transmission is 50 thousand. The “robot” excluded from the line was 25,000 cheaper.

The appearance of the Lada Vesta family with the Jatco JF015E variator coupled with the localized French-Japanese H4M engine is more significant news than the debut of a continuously variable transmission in AvtoVAZ vehicles. The raised Xray Cross hatch, which was the first to receive such a power unit, is not the most important car for the market. Unlike Vesta, which ranks second in sales after VAZ's Granta. And this is in the absence of a two-pedal version that is understandable to the consumer: cars with the AMT “robot” were not in particular demand.

Ten percent of Wests were sold with AMT - that’s not enough. Judge for yourself: even among state-owned Renault, two-pedal versions account for 40% of Logans and Sanderos sold this year. I won’t grieve for Vesta with the “robot”: even after updating the software, the traction control left much to be desired. With the CVT, the Lada is only a couple of kilograms heavier compared to the 1.8 AMT version. Despite the loss of power, the two-pedal Vesta has become more dynamic: the stated acceleration time to 100 km/h has decreased by an average of a second, depending on the body type.

For a sedan, the gain is 0.8 s. Subjectively, it doesn’t seem so, but without traction failures during shifts, acceleration definitely became more enjoyable. The sedan gives no reason to experience an inferiority complex: the car quickly responds to accelerator commands, simulating gear changes during acceleration and allowing engine braking. The kickdown works with a slight delay and brings the engine to maximum power, but you shouldn’t expect much speed from 113 forces.

The sedan is about half a centner lighter than the Xray Cross 1.6 AT I tested earlier, and accelerates more actively. I readily believe in the second superiority of Vesta over the hatch when accelerating to hundreds, although in quiet modes the impression of the dynamics of the two cars is similar. But the raised SW Cross station wagon with the same power unit is subjectively even slower than the X-Ray, although they are stated to have approximately the same time to meet the 0–100 km/h standard. Close and mass. All continuously variable Ladas have an identical gear ratio of the main pair, and the outer diameter of the Vesta wheels is more modest. And yet she seems sluggish.

We don’t follow goat paths through the mountains, but we do get off the asphalt. In light off-road conditions, there is no acute shortage of traction, and the small reserve that is available is not difficult to manage. Of course, provided that both front tires grip the ground. If contact is lost, the suspended wheel skids helplessly due to the lack of blocking imitation. At least the transmission does not overheat, allowing you to get out in a swing.

Here everything is exactly the same as with the X-ray: when faced with developed terrain, you should act decisively and overcome obstacles on foot. In most cases, for a CVT Vesta, this is the only way not to get stuck. And it’s good that the successful body geometry with high bumpers encourages this driving style.

Returning to the asphalt, I am again faced with the need to squeeze every drop of juice out of the SW power unit. I think the problem is in the testing conditions. We drove the Xray across the flat Kaliningrad region, and tormented the Vestas with the serpentines of Karachay-Cherkessia. Both test Vestas are reluctant to run uphill, but SW Cross does it as if with all its might. But in city conditions, any of the CVT cars is perceived harmoniously.

These versions are primarily intended for city dwellers. And both for private owners and for corporate parks with car sharing. It’s not for nothing that the Classic Start Plus package for 736,900 rubles was chosen as the base package. It differs from the completely naked Classic, with a VAZ 1.6 engine (106 hp) for 607 thousand only in the presence of air conditioning and heated seats.

Along with the new power unit, AvtoVAZ also prepared an update package for Vesta. Almost all of them are photographed and listed in the video above. I would especially like to note the frameless wiper blades, as well as the new door locks. The former have repeatedly become the object of our criticism. Among the advantages, real users note excellent suspension, good clutch and manual transmission, smooth shifting. Dynamics, chassis, interior, trunk - everything works perfectly. The car handles the road well and responds sensitively to steering inputs. Consumers note the spaciousness of the interior. The combination of an “older” engine and mechanics is still a novelty for many.

The Lada Vesta family is expecting a new addition in the coming months in the form of the 2018-2019 Lada Vesta Cross all-terrain sedan. The new model will join the regular four-door Vesta, the Lada Vesta SW and SW Cross station wagons, as well as the dual-fuel Vesta CNG modification that runs on gasoline and methane. AvtoVAZ’s new product, presented as a concept two years ago at the Moscow Motor Show 2016, has finally found production and will appear in the showrooms of official dealers this summer.

The range of engines for the elevated Lada Vesta Cross sedan will consist of 1.6 liter (106 hp) and 1.8 liter (122 hp) petrol units, which are combined with either a manual or a five-speed robotic gearbox. Like the Vesta SW Cross station wagon, the four-door version of the model will be offered in a single Luxe version, so the base price will probably exceed 720,000 rubles. Exact configurations and prices for the cross-sedan will appear closer to the start of sales, but photos and technical specifications have mostly been declassified now.

It is interesting that representatives of AvtoVAZ, during the presentation of Vesta Cross, stated that the new Lada sedan will be a unique offer for the Russian market. And to some extent this is true, because we really don’t sell many machines of similar format, if not a few. The only thing that comes to mind is the Volvo S60 Cross Country, but with a price of 2,430,000 rubles, it plays in a completely different league.

Exterior

The new car has adopted the main features of the SW Cross crossover and therefore looks more like a station wagon than a sedan. For example, there is a plastic body kit that protects the arches and sills, as well as additional bumper pads.

It is worth paying attention to the following elements of the car:

  • A hood that adds attractiveness to the sedan and at the same time helps improve speed performance;
  • Rear optical devices having a shape that is created from strict geometric lines;
  • A luggage compartment lid replete with elegant curves. It is distinguished by a streamlined shape, giving the car an elegant appearance.

Dimensions

The restyled version has the following overall dimensions:

  • Length – 4.4 m;
  • Width – 1.8 m;
  • Height – 1.5 m;

The luggage compartment volume is 480 liters, it can be increased by folding the rear seats in parts. True, large items, for example, a washing machine, cannot be transported. The gas tank capacity reaches fifty-five liters.

The interior is made to last, high-quality plastic is used for its finishing, which does not creak, does not emit unpleasant odors and is pleasant to the touch. Noise insulation is decent; even at high speeds, passengers and the driver can talk to each other normally.

You should also pay attention to the following advantages:

  • Comfortable seating behind the wheel, the position of which can be changed both in angle of inclination and in reach;
  • High driver's seat providing excellent visibility of the road;
  • Large glove compartment and various niches for storing small items;
  • Well made door panels;
  • A good armrest with an opening box;
  • Comfortable passenger seats trimmed with ecological leather;

The interior is quite spacious, it is possible to change the position of the seats to suit the needs of passengers. In terms of spaciousness, the sedan is quite comparable to the SW Cross station wagon. We are also pleased with the good modern equipment of the car - all the most necessary functions for the driver and passengers are present.

The developers have eliminated some of the shortcomings that were inherent in previous models of this brand. These include problems with electronics and poor heating. Previously, mirrors and glass were connected to a single circuit, as a result of which they heated for a long time and not well enough. The new sedan does not have this problem.

Dimensions and body design features

For those who have personally seen the West station wagon with the Cross prefix, the appearance of the all-terrain four-door will not be a revelation for the simple reason that many exterior elements, right down to the shape of the rear bumper, are the same for both models. The sedan, in particular, received identical 17-inch wheels with 205/50 R17 tires, as well as an impressive plastic body kit covering the entire lower perimeter - the edges of the bumpers, sills, wheel arches.

The body dimensions of the Lada Vesta Cross are not very different from the dimensions of a regular Vesta. The length of the new product is 4410 mm, width – 1785 mm, height – 1526 mm. That is, the cross version, with the same length, is 21 mm wider and 29 mm taller than the classic Vesta model. The wheelbase of the cars, of course, is the same - 2635 mm, but the ground clearance of the raised sedan is stated at 203 mm (+25 mm to the ground clearance of the standard four-door).

The new product received a reliable suspension, gas shock absorbers, reinforced springs and special fastening of steering rods. For Russian roads this is an ideal option.

Serious attention was paid to the interior - it looks quite fresh and stylish. Electronic content and comfort systems are also at their best - there is climate control with preset temperature support, heated seats and windshield, rain and light sensors, adaptive cruise control. The spacious luggage compartment with a convenient door deserves special attention. The fairly affordable price of Vesta Cross with such functionality is a pleasant surprise.

Buying a LADA Vesta Cross (cars are already available for order in Moscow from an official dealer) is worth it for those who are looking for a universal version for commuting to work on weekdays and for fishing or a picnic on weekends. A ground clearance of 230 mm allows the new product to feel comfortable both in the city and on light off-road conditions.

The interior of the new member of the Vesta family exactly copies the interior of the SV Cross station wagon. There is a dashboard with characteristic orange backlighting of the scales, a comfortable armrest with a box between the front seats, orange or gray contrasting inserts with an X-shape on the seats. Eco-leather in combination with fabric is used as upholstery materials.

The Luxe package provides a very extensive range of available equipment. The list of equipment includes electric windows on all doors, electric drive and heated exterior mirrors, heated windshield, heated front seats, climate control, rear parking sensors, multifunction steering wheel, multimedia with a 7-inch color screen, USB and Bluetooth, rear view camera, several 12V sockets, footlights for front passengers.

The difference between SW Cross and regular Vesta

The SV Cross differs from the basic station wagon by the presence of a plastic body kit and wheels with a diameter of 17 inches. The ground clearance has been increased to 20.3 cm (instead of the standard 17.8 cm). The new Lada has already been compared to the Renault Duster crossover. The domestic car is superior to the French “competitor” in terms of length and even ground clearance.

The developers also improved the already good suspension from the regular Vesta, shock absorbers and springs were replaced. This has led to the fact that the Vesta Sw Cross 2022 holds the road and handles even better than the Lada without the “Cross” prefix.

Exterior

The rear door opening has increased, and the window frame has also “raised.” The roof slope has become flatter. This makes the position of passengers in the rear seat more comfortable, because There is enough space between their heads and the ceilings.

The inclination of the rear pillars is the same as on all bodies with a shortened rear overhang - slightly forward. The fifth door connector resembles a shark fin and runs along the top of the pillars.

The body of the 2022 Lada Vesta SV Cross is 15 cm higher than the classic sedan, and slightly wider thanks to the wheel arches. The new Lada is equipped with rear disc brakes. But this update is only for “advanced” versions.

The fuel filler flap now has a central lock, with which it is locked and latched. The protruding “ear” has been removed. The modernization also affected the trunk lock: now it opens and closes using a button. It is located under the license plate.

The design of the antenna has changed: instead of a twig that will remain on the sedan, it finally took the shape of an elegant fin. The exhaust pipe is equipped with a double-barreled nozzle (the base model does not have this upgrade).

The color scheme of the 2022 Lada Vesta SV Cross includes 10 shades. All of them are bright and juicy, which gives the car even more charisma. Each, according to AvtoVAZ tradition, has its own name - “Mars”, “Glacial”, “Black Pearl”. This is a “stretch” of monochrome colors - from pearly white to elegant black, as well as orange and red shades.

The Lada Vesta Cross sedan has power units familiar from other AvtoVAZ models of 1.6 (106 hp, 148 Nm) and 1.8 (122 hp, 170 Nm) liters, adapted to run on 92-liter gasoline. The first engine is compatible only with a 5-speed manual transmission, the second, in addition to manual transmission, can also be combined with a robotic gearbox. The car's suspension is built according to the usual scheme: MacPherson struts at the front, semi-independent design with a torsion beam at the rear. The steering mechanism is of the rack-and-pinion type and is equipped with an electric amplifier. The brakes on all wheels are disc.

You can buy the new Vesta Cross off-road vehicle for 756 thousand rubles. The buyer becomes the owner of a practical car with a cool appearance and a huge number of functions:
