Flushing the engine when changing the oil: is it necessary to flush the engine when changing the oil, flushing oil for the engine

During the operation of a vehicle, a large amount of dirt and soot accumulates in the engine compartment - and it is impossible to completely protect the engine from them. But deposits can be removed through technical washing. Engine flushing is a procedure that allows you to remove contaminants from the working area of the power plant using special flushing liquids. However, disputes often arise among car enthusiasts about the need for this procedure. According to opponents, special cleaning of engines is not required - for this it is enough to buy synthetic motor oils with detergent additives. However, let's try to figure it out - is it necessary to flush the engine when changing the oil or can it be omitted?

Washing the engine compartment

If the famous hero of William Shakespeare's work named Hamlet was tormented by the question “To be or not to be”... then any car owner sooner or later asks himself the question “To wash or not to wash”
Someone basically never washes... there are people who go to the other extreme, who They arrange a bath day for the engine once a month... In my opinion, a reasonable approach with washing the engine compartment once a year is quite sufficient. It is quite logical to do this in the spring - this way we get rid of the inevitable stronger and chemical pollution characteristic of winter, and then it is quite easy to maintain cleanliness for a long time, since in summer the pollution will be more likely in the form of dust.

Vesta was purchased in the last days of last summer, which means it survived its first winter, having now run 14 thousand kilometers. And what do we have under the hood?

I agree, not very good. Even though I “collectively farmed” the additional rubber seals - it’s dirty. I don’t know whether to scold Vesta... In Opel, after every winter it was definitely no better for me... The only thing, of course, is that the hood lock in Vesta is clearly at risk (((

The location is such that even with extras. with a rubber band opposite the lock, it is always covered in dirt. And in winter it’s also chemicals and reagents. In general, it is not at all difficult to sour the castle. The fact that in the photo this is the state before washing - at the end of winter I washed it with a cleaner. Next winter I'm thinking of putting a sponge on the lock's foot - maybe it will help somehow.

The situation was assessed. The question remains: how to wash? To be honest, I wouldn’t go to an ordinary ordinary car wash... Well, I don’t believe in this area of business here) I’m a garage guy, so I do it myself)))

For 5-7 years now, little Karcher has been my faithful assistant in the garage.

The most budget model and bought on sale for ridiculous money. If we are talking about removing summer pollution from a car, then it is quite enough - it definitely worked for its money a long time ago.

Water is available very close to the garage and usually such a container is enough for washing.

I'm not afraid to use Karcher to wash the engine compartment. The main thing is with intelligence and understanding. I washed a lot of different cars. As for chemistry, provided that the engine is not completely covered in oil, regular active foam for the body will suffice. This time in the garage I found two types of chemicals for their intended purpose.

Chemistry level... Auchan hypermarket... Dries instantly - zero effect. The only plus is really the foam.

Grass is my frequent choice in the field of auto chemicals, but here it is frankly weak. I would recommend it for wiping an already clean engine with a cloth sometime in the summer on a nice evening.

When not to rinse

All oils contain a balanced set of detergent, antioxidant, and extreme pressure additives that provide reliable protection for the automotive power unit. If you use high-quality motor lubricants from reliable manufacturers, adhering to the recommended replacement intervals, then flushing the engine is not necessary.

At the same time, the operating conditions of the vehicle are also important. If the car has been used for extreme driving in adverse weather conditions for a long time, it is better to clean the engine.

How to wash the engine

First, foam was applied, which was used to wash the body. After this they rinsed with water. This emblem is drawn saying that you can’t wash it with a Karcher, I’ve already been told several times.

There is no way this water gets here. I won't open it until the end. It can be seen that there is still dust left there.

There are no traces of water there. Some said that there is a risk of water getting into the spark plug wells where the ignition coils are installed. One of these days I will take them off and change the spark plugs. I've already driven 28,000 km on them, it's time to change them.

I'll see if the coils are rusty. The car is already 3 years old, I wash it often, especially in the summer. Before this I often washed the engine cover, but now I removed it because I was installing a tee. Now there is no protective screen, just wrapped in thermal tape.

Therefore, I will not install the cover yet, it would be better later by the end of summer. Let's look into the air filter, maybe water has gotten into it.

No, everything is dry here. I changed the filter recently, maybe 1000 miles, no more. It doesn't take long to wash the engine. It still quickly becomes covered in dust. Especially when you drive through a puddle, everything gets thrown around.

You don’t have to worry about washing the engine; no errors will appear. Many people say that water gets into the hole in the control unit. I sealed it with glue to keep moisture out. Otherwise there are no problems. No problems, no errors appear. Therefore, you can wash it without problems.

Step-by-step instructions for changing oil on Lada Vesta

Changing the oil on a Lada Vesta with your own hands is relatively easy. To do this you will have to follow the following instructions:

  • The car needs to be warmed up well for the engine to reach operating temperature.
  • After this, you need to drive the car into a pit or use a jack if there is no overpass or lift.
  • Remove the oil filler neck.
  • Unscrew the drain plug. It is located on a tray at the bottom of the machine.
  • Wait until the oil drains completely.
  • Replace the oil filter.
  • Screw the drain plug back, replacing the gasket.
  • Pour in the required amount of oil and screw the neck back on.
  • Check oil level.

Lada Vesta requires 3.2-4.4 liters depending on the type of engine and gearbox. If you don't know how much fluid is needed, fill to the middle of the mark, check with a dipstick and add the missing amount.

Oil drain

The oil can be drained only when its temperature reaches operating temperature. To do this, either warm up the engine at idle speed, or drive the car a short distance. You can start changing the oil immediately after you return from the store to the garage.

You should wear gloves when working, as contact with hot liquid can cause burns. Prepare in advance a container into which the waste will be drained. Any container of the required volume that will not melt from high temperature will do. The oil is drained by unscrewing the drain plug on the engine sump; it is located on the bottom of the car.

Removing and installing the oil filter

To remove the oil filter on any car, you will need a special puller. Its price is on average 300 rubles, and you can purchase it at any auto store. This is a universal wrench that allows you to grab the oil filter and unscrew it with ease.

It should be remembered that it is necessary to change the Lada Vesta filter. This is done after all the oil has drained. Be sure to lubricate the filter itself with new oil before installation. On the Lada Vesta it is located in the lower part on the passenger side, so you can get the filter only by lifting the car on a lift or jack. You can use a pit.

Flushing

City mode allows you to avoid flushing if you use the same engine oil and change it on time. If you need to do a flush, do it after the oil has been drained:

  • Instead of oil, fill in engine cleaning agent.
  • The engine must be started and run for 20 minutes.
  • Drain the liquid.
  • Repeat the procedure, but leave the engine running for an hour.
  • Pour off the cleaning agent again.
  • You can fill in a new consumable.

Air Filter Installation

Granta, Kalina, Vesta, like any other car, requires replacing not only the oil filter, but also the air filter. The latter gradually becomes clogged and does not allow the power system to receive a sufficient amount of air. Because of this, traction is lost and fuel consumption increases.

The approximate replacement interval for the air filter is 10,000 km, so it must be changed together with the oil filter. It will be easy for you to remember when to perform the procedure. The air filter is easy to get; it is located in a special box under the hood. It is also recommended to replace the cabin filter, but this is not necessary.

Oil fill

You need to fill the engine with oil through neck 1, which is located on top of any engine of any manufacturer. Most often, manufacturers produce inconvenient cans, due to which oil spills throughout the engine, it is not easy to get into the neck, so use a special funnel so as not to dirty the engine and the place where you are carrying out the replacement procedure.

After you add new oil, check its level. The engine must be cold. To check, use a special dipstick 2; it is located under the hood near the oil filler neck. There are marks on the dipstick that indicate what the oil level should be. You can fill it to the middle or maximum mark; you should not allow it to go to the minimum.

Preparatory work

  1. I cooled the engine, it stood for about 40 minutes and cooled down.
  2. Removed the negative terminal of the battery.
  3. I covered the electronic unit with a bag.

  4. I prepared a brush.
  5. I bought an engine cleaner with a sprayer. You can do without it; regular shampoo will do. I decided to try to see how he would cope.

I don’t even know if I washed the engine correctly, or if this is not the right way to do it. But don’t judge strictly, write down what you did differently than you would have done.

Summarize

Flushing the engine when changing the oil is certainly a necessary procedure. Even if you don't subject your car to heavy loads, deposits will accumulate inside it. Even if in small quantities, they are present. And it is sometimes impossible to wash them with conventional motor oils. In order to clean the internal surface of the motor unit, special cleaning components are used. But it is impossible to immediately determine whether the procedure for using them will entail serious consequences or not. Especially if you are servicing a second-hand car. Only an experienced auto mechanic can tell you about the condition of his motor system. Therefore, after purchasing a used vehicle, it is recommended to take it to a service center for diagnostics and preventative maintenance.

Washing

At the first stage I simply removed the dusty dirt. I don't have a Karcher, the water pressure is low.

I simply moistened it slightly and removed the main stains with a brush without chemicals.

Of course, under pressure it was possible to wash away the dirt faster. The main contaminants were removed. I poured the purchased cleaner into a special sprayer into which you can pump up pressure.

Then I treated the surfaces of the engine compartment with chemicals.

Then I also used a brush to clean all hard-to-reach places. Then I waited 15 minutes and rinsed with a low pressure hose.

This is the result.

I dried everything out, started it for a few minutes, and the engine dried out.

conclusions

I can say that washing the Lada Vesta engine in this way takes a long time. Karcher would be much faster. When I removed the cellophane from the “brains”, there was still unwashed dust underneath. Here and there I did a poor job with the brush; when everything was wet, it wasn’t noticeable. But overall I’m happy with the result, it’s much better.

Alternatively, you can also wash with a hose; high pressure is not necessary. An acquaintance of mine was washing a motor with high pressure at a car wash, and the washer damaged its wires. Therefore, it depends on your luck.
