How to close the hub on a stamped Lada Vesta disk

During the life tests of Vesta, wheel caps were constantly lost. Owners of the Lada XRAY crossover and other Lada models also face a similar situation. Is it worth buying decorative plugs for the front wheel hubs in case of loss? Or drive on, not paying attention to their absence?

The opinion of car enthusiasts is divided on two fronts:

  • Some believe that these caps are only decorative.
  • Others believe that they also protect the threads from the external environment, preventing rust and souring.

The rear hubs have metal caps of a different diameter (they will not fit the front wheels). The rear plugs, unlike the front ones, sit in place quite tightly and do not get lost during operation. Sometimes they are even coated with graphite lubricant so that there are no problems when removing them if necessary.

Perhaps there would be less controversy on this topic if the price of the front caps for alloy wheels were within reasonable limits. The cost of these accessories from the dealer is about 100-150 rubles apiece.

Lada Vesta: do you need a hub cap?

Installation of parts on a Lada Vesta: a hub cap for the front wheels is one of the modernization methods, because they are not installed at the factory.
The hub cap is available for cast wheels and for iron stampings. They differ. Drivers of Lada Vesta cars install hub caps to protect the threads from dirt, corrosion, or to improve the aesthetic appearance of the car. The plug itself is not an expensive part, but it performs useful functions. Read the article and your bearings will last longer! While operating a car, drivers think about whether wheel hub caps are needed? The rear wheel hub of the Lada Vesta is equipped with caps; they are installed at the factory during assembly. The diameter of the front and rear hubcaps is different. The diameter of the hole for installing the hub cap is 5 cm.

If the owner wishes to add hub caps to the car, it is enough to purchase them. Installing them is easy with your own hands. To install, you will need to lift the wheel and loosen the bolts. Now you can put on the caps. It is necessary to place the edges under the bolts. Afterwards you can fix them and secure the wheel bolts. Mechanics recommend lubricating the caps before putting them on with copper grease, which prevents damage to parts during movement and friction.

Bearing 256707 - front hub VAZ-1118 Kalina

Its main area of application is the front wheel bearing of VAZ 1118, 2190 and other models of this series produced by the Tolyatti Automobile Plant. It has the following design characteristics - ball, angular contact, double-row, closed type (seals on both sides and with plastic lubrication). Since it has two rows of rolling elements, it is capable of fixing the shaft under axial load in both directions. There is a roller analogue of this bearing - 537807, it has an increased load capacity, but a lower rotation speed; its use may be more advisable on our roads, which are not characterized by smooth surfaces. The smaller bearing 256706 is installed in the rear hubs of the predecessor models of Granta and Kalina. Full product marking - 6-256707EK12 or AEKL20 (there may be others, primarily Vologda ones, but, by and large, there is not much difference)

This type is produced at several factories in the country, which differ in the quality and prices of their products:

  • Saratov Bearing Plant (3 GPZ, marking SPZ) and Volzhsky Bearing Plant (15 GPZ, VPZ) - according to experts, they produce the best front hub bearings in our country, and they are not very expensive. What they have in common is that they are both members of the European Bearing Corporation. Its products are best purchased from official representatives, which are located in many regions. This guarantees quality and low prices (just over 400 rubles). The 15th plant relatively recently began producing automotive bearings under the Volzhsky Standard brand, which have improved characteristics and have more attractive and convenient packaging, but also cost a little more.
  • 23 GPZ (or VBF, Vologda) - it just so happens that among car enthusiasts its bearings are considered the best and they are often asked only for them, discarding all other options, which is not entirely true. In terms of quality, they are not much different from EPK bearings, but are often more expensive.
  • In addition, there are Slovak LSA bearings on sale (not bad, but expensive) and various Chinese options, which are best avoided due to low reliability (it’s unlikely to save on the quality of hub bearings) - Craft, APP.

Why is a hub cap needed on the Lada Vesta

The plug on the front wheels serves as a protection. When installed, the appearance of the machine becomes complete.

The caps perform the following functions:

  • protection from dirt, dust;
  • protects against corrosion;
  • does not allow oxidation;
  • to some extent increases aerodynamic characteristics;
  • prolongs the operation of the car;
  • protect the brake system from foreign objects and dust;
  • A decorative plug for the front wheel hubs adds solidity to the wheels.

Manufacturers of caps (plugs)

When choosing, decide whether you will buy plastic or metal protective products. Consider the diameter - 5 cm. Plastic caps can be plastic and rigid. Plastic ones will last longer and can easily withstand temperature changes. The shape of the caps is open or closed. Closed ones provide protection from contamination, open ones better cool the brake system. Which option to choose is up to everyone to decide for themselves. The price of a metal cap is practically no different from a plastic one. The cost of the product is 100-180 rubles.

Analogs

If official dealers do not have hub plugs for the front wheels, you don’t have to look for the original one, but install an analogue one. Parts made by other manufacturers of the appropriate size are suitable for the Lada Vesta. The diameter matches many French Renault cars. You can purchase parts from other AvtoVAZ models - Kalina, Grant, Priora. The clamps on the products for these models are too narrow. You will need to apply your soldering iron skills and expand them to the required 50 mm. Well, this is not for everyone!

In addition to the listed manufacturing companies, there are many products made in China and Japan. The price is lower than for original, French, Turkish or Romanian manufacturers. Chinese products are not inferior in quality, service life, and quality of raw materials.

Ways to modify the fastening of the caps

Modify the fastening of the wheel caps by installing a retaining ring (by the way, such protective caps are installed on the Lada XRAY).

You can also use the cap of a 19 liter water bottle. And in order for it to stand up normally, without interfering with the hooks, you need to remove the excess with a knife in some places.

Use the shock absorber of the Volga rear support (article 241001130). Cut them in half and insert them into the plugs, the diameter of which is like a glove. One caveat: the rear wheels need thinner rubber bands; there is a shorter distance to the hub than on the front wheels (author of the photo).

Lada (“Lada”) is a brand of cars produced by JSC AVTOVAZ. Previously, it was used only for export cars, and for the domestic market, cars were produced under the Zhiguli brand. In 2004, the management of AVTOVAZ announced the transition to the Latin alphabet for the official spelling of the names of all cars produced by the plant: Lada - instead of "VAZ" and "Lada".

Lada.Online is the largest Russian-language automotive resource with a daily audience of thousands, which is dedicated primarily to cars of this brand, the domestic automotive industry and the automotive world in general.

Problem

Car owners have long noticed that the front wheels of the Lada Vesta are not equipped with hub caps. When equipped with light alloy wheels, this point is of little significance, since alloy wheels have caps, but standard ones do not have them. Moreover, this applies only to the front pair of wheels, since Vesta has rear hub caps.

This issue is especially relevant in winter, since on the eve of the winter season, drivers change tires, and not everyone puts back alloy wheels, because many prefer to simply install standard steel ones and ride on them all winter.

There are no front wheel hub caps on Vesta from the factory

As a result, dirt, snow, dust, etc. are constantly flying onto the hub bolts, which are completely open. In general, there is nothing catastrophic in this, but it is also unpleasant to look at such a picture. Yes, and difficulties with unscrewing the hub nut may also arise if it becomes necessary to remove the hub.

In general, Lada Vesta owners are divided into 2 large groups:

  1. Those who believe that the Vesta wheel hub cap is nothing more than a decorative component.
  2. They believe that this element also performs a protective function, protecting the thread from damage.

In any case, it won’t be a bad idea to buy wheel hub caps for the Lada Vesta.

Visual examples of Vesta wheel hub caps are shown in the video

Installation of car hubcaps

If you want to know how to install hubcaps on your car without them falling off or getting damaged during installation, read on for clear step-by-step instructions with pictures and videos

Before installing the hubcaps on the wheels, make sure that their size matches the size of the rim (Fig. 1). Information on rim size can be obtained from the markings on the tire.

Step 1. First you need to thoroughly clean the inner surface of the disk from dust and dirt. If there are significant deformations of the rim, they must be eliminated by straightening them.

Step 2: Align the valve notches on the cap with the spacer ring (Figure 2). The bend on the spacer ring should face the wheel skin (as shown in Figure 3a). Carefully insert the spacer ring into the specially designed grooves inside the wheel trim holders.

Step 3. The diameter of the spacer ring must be adjusted by compressing it in place of the valve if the cover is fixed (Fig. 4 a), or by lengthening it when the cover is loose (Fig. 4 c). Proper adjustment of the spacer ring diameter is the secret to a secure fit. A small diameter is the main reason for the loss of the cap (after all, it does not fit tightly to the disc). An excessively large diameter becomes one of the reasons for the holder to break due to the inability to insert it into the disk.

When adjusting the size, don't try to change it too much; 2-3 mm in circumference can greatly affect the reliability of the fastening

Step 4: Attach the wheel hub to the bottom of the rim so that the hole lines up with the air valve (this will ensure the wheel cap fits correctly the first time), hold it with your knee, and carefully insert the remaining supports into the circle. Press the two upper stops against the disk axis with your fingers (Fig. 5) and at the same time push the disk inward, pressing the hub cap along the entire circumference of the disk. In this case, it is convenient to hold the lower part of the hood with your knee (Fig. 6).

Step 5. Make sure that the wheel trim is located around the entire perimeter (Fig. 7)

How to install wheel covers - 7 cards in one picture

It's better to see it once!

Removing hubcaps from wheels

To remove the wheel covers, insert your fingers into the holes on the wheel cover and firmly pull them out of the rim. If the wheel cap fits snugly enough in the holes, you can thread a piece of string or fabric and also firmly pull the wheel cover out.

Now that you are the installer, it's time to choose the right wheel trim model.

Where can I buy?

To make a purchase, you can go to either the LADA dealership or any auto store. However, these elements are not always available. Therefore, the easiest way would be to order them online.

The table shows resources where you can place an order.

Online store

It is worth noting that the diameter of the hub hole of the Lada Vesta is 50 mm, which is similar to that of the Lada X-Ray, Largus, as well as some Renault models. All this allows you to find products with the lowest price when choosing.

Installation

After purchasing the Lada Vesta wheel hub caps, all that remains is to install them. However, this will take much longer than it initially seems. The fact is that the installation is hampered by the wheel bolts, due to which the edges of the caps do not fit. For this reason, you have to jack up the wheel, unscrew the bolts a little (but not completely) and put the caps under them, and then tighten the bolts again.

There are different opinions regarding the need for lubrication. Some believe that this is useless, while others are sure that without lubrication, the heat will cause the caps to stick to the discs. As for the lubricant itself, ideally you should use copper, as it provides the optimal effect. But another composition will do.

Rear wheels

The rear wheel hub caps of the Lada Vesta already come from the factory and are held much tighter than the front ones, so their loss is an exceptional case. In addition, some Vesta owners even lubricate them with a special graphite lubricant - this avoids problems with removal.

I recently changed the wheels to summer ones. Here I wrote about painting wheels. Suddenly it turned out that there were no hub caps on the front wheels. While the caps were on, I somehow didn’t pay attention to it. Now it has become noticeable.

I started looking at what was on sale. I found 2 options: plastic and stainless steel (although in fact it is the same chrome-plated plastic).

Before purchasing, I read the reviews, but I still didn’t really understand what was suitable and what was not. In the end I bought both sets.

First, I put the stainless steel in front, there is a herringbone type fastening - it is hammered in quite tightly, I don’t think it will fall out. In the end it became like this:

You can't see it in the photo, but you can clearly see the difference between the wheels.

The rear plug is more aluminum, the front one is like a mirror. I tried to replace the original plug on the rear wheel, but it turned out that it was slightly larger in diameter and the new one stupidly fell out of it. It turns out that you need to buy a larger diameter back, that is, 52-56mm instead of 48-52mm. Finally, I put black plastic plugs on top.

By the way, a life hack - to install them, you don’t need to jack up the car and unscrew all the bolts, just unscrew the two opposite ones - and the plug stands up with a little effort.

Many car enthusiasts complain about the original alloy wheel hub cap constantly getting lost. It turns out that to avoid loss it is enough to take a few simple steps.

The loss of the cap on the LADA Vesta SW Cross will not surprise anyone. Owners of this model most often do not know how to deal with the fact that the caps constantly fall off. Moreover, it is impossible to purchase this element specifically for an AvtoVAZ car - there is a shortage. So the owners of Vesta either have to drive without a cap at all, or buy plugs of the same diameter from other car brands in auto stores.

“Woeful master with a screwdriver”: Users shamed bloggers for ridiculing LADA 4×4

Bloggers purchased a new LADA 4×4 SUV, dismantled it and ironically ridiculed the “Soviet” interior of the car. Commentators on social networks were outraged by the “experts” and put them in their place.

“In fact, there can be an infinite number of solutions to the most common problem on the LADA Vesta SW Cross - everything is limited by your ability to find original solutions. Use your imagination!” summed up the autoblogger.

Topic: Hub caps?

Has anyone had such a situation? When the dealership installed winter wheels on stamped rims, for some reason they did not put a hub cap (cover) on the front wheels. Is there a shortage of them or have they simply been forgotten? (photo not of my wheel, just for clarification)

Re: Hub caps?

They shouldn't exist. At first they were definitely not there on the first Vesta. If it's so important, install these from another car, although it's just aesthetics. And what is the aesthetics of stamped standard wheels?

Re: Hub caps?

This is not aesthetics, but to protect the hub nut and threads from dirt getting on them.

On the nines, instead of this cover, they put a rubber cap from the rack, it fit together, and did not fly off later, and did not rust.

Re: Hub caps?

They are not from the factory and never will be. Exactly the same as on Logan and Sanders - pay attention. And in the same way, this issue is actively discussed on their forums.

Re: Hub caps?

Cast wheels or hubcaps solve the problem. Or you can buy them for 50 rubles and install them yourself. The plant probably decides to save so much, 100 rubles per car, with 10 thousand cars sold, a million will flow in, that’s not bad.
