VAZ 2114: instrument panel backlight does not light up - 5 reasons and solutions

Operating a car without working instrument lights becomes uncomfortable, so in this article you will find 5 reasons why the lights may go out. In a situation where the backlight of the VAZ 2114 instrument panel does not light up, it is difficult to track the readings of engine temperature, fuel level, tachometer and speedometer, so the problem should be resolved promptly.

Fuse blown

If the lack of illumination of one zone of the tidy can be attributed to a burnt-out light bulb, then a complete failure of instrument lighting means the presence of a more serious malfunction. The most easily remedied of these faults is a blown fuse. In the new type mounting block, the instrument panel lighting fuse is marked with the combination F10 . The photo below shows its exact location.

In addition to the lighting lamps, this pre protects the tachometer, speedometer, fuel and temperature gauge circuits. The simultaneous failure of all of the listed elements is a clear indicator of a blown fuse F10. The power of this element is 7.5 Amperes.

If after replacing it the dashboard on the VAZ 2114 does not light up, then the reason should be looked for in other places.

Types of panels

Instrument panels on the VAZ 2109 are of at least three types:

  • Low panel;
  • High panel;
  • Electronic panel on nines with Europanel.

Europanel

On versions with a low panel, failure of the entire panel is extremely rare. This is due to the fact that here the speedometer and econometer are equipped with mechanical drives. Therefore, it is unlikely that they will fail along with the electrical component.

Dashboards with a high panel do not have an econometer, but the speedometer is also based on a mechanical cable drive.

Burnt out light bulbs

When looking for the reasons why the VAZ 2114 instrument panel does not light up, you should distinguish between the types of breakdowns. If only part of the instrument panel is not illuminated, then the reason is obvious - the light bulb has burned out. The simultaneous burnout of all lighting lamps is a rare situation, therefore, in the complete absence of light, the cause should be sought elsewhere.

Having determined that the backlight of the VAZ 2114 instruments does not light up in only one zone, disassemble the housing and replace the burnt-out element. We recommend replacing all light bulbs at the same time.

If the instrument panel on a VAZ 2114 goes out at the moment of hitting a bump or when the lights are turned on, then the cause of the malfunction lies in the wiring or lack of contact.

Problem with electronic devices

In some cases, you may find that the entire instrument panel is faulty. For example, if you have an electronic instrument cluster that does not have individual sensors that receive independent inputs from separate sending devices, a complete failure of all sensors will often require replacement of the entire cluster.

Early electronic instrument clusters had digital readouts much like an LCD alarm clock, while the modern equivalent often simulates analog gauges in a much more sophisticated way. Either way, diagnosing and repairing or rebuilding this type of instrument cluster is beyond the typical DIY option, unless you want to just replace the whole thing and hope for the best.

Damaged contact board

One of the unpleasant variants of the problem is damage to the contact board. Carrying out its repair in a garage is impossible, especially in the absence of an understanding of the placement of elements on the diagram. The presence of damage on its surface covers all the causes of the malfunction, so the best solution to the problem is to replace the assembled part.

The price of a new contact board for the “four” is 2000-3000 rubles. If there is damage to the glass or failure of the tachometer, speedometer, fuel level and temperature gauge motors, we recommend buying an assembled panel, its price is 5000-6000 rubles (instrument panel from VDO). If the backlight on the instrument panel suddenly stops lighting, then it is worth examining the condition of the wiring and plugs supplying power to the lamp. At the moment when the backlight disappears, you can operate the car, but at night there will be a problem with poor visibility of the arrows.

What to do if the VAZ-2115 instrument panel does not work

As mentioned above, it is necessary to establish the cause of the instrument panel malfunction. If they are significant and cannot be repaired, then in this case it is necessary to install a new PCB. For a better outcome when installing the panel, you need to know and follow the following instructions:

  1. Replacement of the instrument panel is carried out strictly in accordance with the pinout.
  2. First you need to disconnect the cable going to the cigarette lighter.
  3. Dismantle the control panel. It is necessary to unscrew 2 screws located along the edges, top and bottom of the instrument panel.
  4. The next step will be to dismantle the lining. The difficulty is that it is held in place by clamps, so you need to swing it a little.
  5. After this, all wires going to the instrument panel are disconnected (light alarm connector, clock, speedometer, fuel level sensor).
  6. The very last step is to dismantle the control panel. All the bolts that secure it are unscrewed. At this stage, you should perform actions very carefully, as you can really damage the wiring.

Wiring damage

One of the unwanted breakdowns is damage to the wiring. Small contacts, resistors and plugs are difficult to repair without tools. Lack of power to the connectors and bulb sockets leads to their malfunction. As a DIY repair attempt, you can disconnect the plugs and connectors, and then clean all contacts from oxides. In rare cases, this procedure can restore contact.

The backlight of the VAZ 2114 dashboard is not a key design component, but its absence seriously complicates the process of operating the car at night. When replacing lamps, you can carry out overexposure procedures and replace standard elements with LED ones. In addition to increased brightness, you will get a longer service life. The photo above shows a detailed diagram of the connections of the VAZ 2114 instrument panel.

Faulty speedometers and speed sensors

Most modern cars and trucks use speed sensors instead of cables, a transition that began in the 1990s. Some cars even have a speed sensor and a cable, in which case the cable usually drives the speedometer and the speed sensor or wheel sensor tells the computer how fast the car is going.

The only way to know for sure what you have is to look at your model and year, or physically inspect the back of the instrument cluster. If there is no cable connected to the rear of the cluster, then your vehicle has a speed sensor.

In vehicles with speed sensors, the easiest way to determine whether the sensor or sensor is bad requires the cruise control system. Since cruise control also uses a speed sensor, it will not work correctly or at all if the sensor is faulty.

If you find that your cruise control works but your speedometer doesn't, you should suspect a bad speedometer. The reverse is also true, so if your speedometer and cruise control are malfunctioning, you may suspect a faulty speed sensor or faulty wiring.

In rare cases, the electronic control unit (ECU) may also malfunction. If you take your vehicle to a qualified technician, he will be able to connect to the ECU to read trouble codes and other data. Using specialized testing equipment, they will also be able to actually test the speed sensor itself.

Fuse box tracks burnt out

In a situation where the device “blinks” and periodically turns off completely, you should check the condition of the tracks in the fuse box. A short circuit, moisture and dirt getting into the block body - all this can lead to breakdowns on the tracks. The photo below shows a typical picture of a faulty fuse box in the “four”.

Because the price of a new block board exceeds 2000-3000 rubles; it is much more profitable to try to re-solder the tracks yourself. This problem is not critical, so if you have the skills to use a soldering iron, you can restore damaged tracks. For prevention, you can treat all contacts to remove oxides and dirt. It is also possible to treat contacts with dielectric grease.

If a lighting malfunction occurs due to a blown fuse, before replacing it, you should determine the cause of its failure. Most often this is a short circuit. Damage to the tracks on the unit board also causes the fuse to constantly blow.

If one of the lighting bulbs blinks, check the reliability of its contact. When driving on a bad road, the contacts in the device may come loose. The introduction of new lighting elements instead of standard ones is an intervention in the design. If new diode lamps are installed incorrectly, problems may occur with other components of the panel. Of the problems listed in the article, the “easiest” one is a blown fuse, while the most undesirable one is a malfunction of the board and mounting block. In any case, the availability of new and used spare parts for the “four” makes this problem insignificant.

Checking the steering column switch

Checking the contacts in the steering column switch housing

In those cases, switching between the BC readings on the panel should be done with a switch on the steering wheel, but this cannot be done - you should make sure that it is working. This steering column switch is used on the panels: “VDO” 1118-3801010, “Schetmash” 2170-3801010-01 and “Avtopribor” 1118-3801010-02. To check whether the steering column switch is working properly, it must be removed and disassembled.

Disassembling the switch consists only of removing the cover, which is held in place by a small metal latch in the form of a bracket. There are 4 contacts under the cover, which are connected to the Reset button and to the switches. There are yellow and black wires coming from the “Reset” button. There are green and red wires coming from the top switch button. All these contacts must be checked with a multimeter for resistance.

If it is, then everything is fine with the switch and you need to disassemble the dashboard to inspect the contacts and tracks. On VDO panels with one window produced in 2006-2007, there is a factory defect - poor contact of one of the resistors, which, during driving, cracks and interrupts the connection between the steering column switch and the panel board.

Hard case

Until now, situations have been sorted out when the torpedo still showed some signs of life. If non-working power windows, turn signals, and windshield wipers have been added to the devices, the issue is no longer a matter of relays and fuses.

  • The contacts on the ignition switch are burnt
    . In principle, after installing the relay (even on the VAZ-2109 version), this problem rarely arises. However, the possibility remains. The lock is removed, the contacts are checked and, if necessary, cleaned;
  • Mounting block
. There may be burnt tracks on its board. The only thing that will save you is replacing it with a new one. However, the cost is by no means astronomical, and the installation is available as a standalone option.

Features of panels of different VAZ-2110 models

On VAZ-2110 cars of different years of production you can see different options for instrument combinations.

  • The first models had a built-in electromechanical panel with factory number 3801010. Visually, the device can be easily identified by the mechanical odometer, which is built into the speedometer scale. It is driven by the engine, but the rest of the indicators operate on the magnetic principle. At the back of the shield you can find two power strips placed at right angles.
  • A little later, a dozen were released with an electronic panel equipped with a display at the bottom of the speedometer. Occasionally there are panels with a suction indicator or an airbag light in the same place. There are cars with dual displays - under the speedometer and tachometer.
  • It is extremely rare to find dozens with panels intended for the VAZ-21106. Such shields are equipped with technical number 21106-3801010. This panel can be identified by the display at the bottom of the tachometer and the extended range of the speedometer.
  • The latest VAZ-2110 models are equipped with shields that are unified with the 2118 model. They have one difference - the combination of scales. Unlike the old model, the signs on these panels are placed chaotically and slightly shifted to the right.

Advice from car enthusiasts and recommendations from experts

There may be a break in the backlight brightness adjustment circuit. The adjustment rheostat has a soldered spring - it tends to fall off. You can simply put a jumper, that is, bypass the rheostat, then the brightness will not be adjusted, or solder it back - you will need to remove the rheostat.

It is better to immediately install LED lighting bulbs for the instruments, they are not much more expensive, but on a cloudy day or when the sun sets, the instruments are readable with a bang. Moreover, no modifications are needed, the base is suitable...

You can do everything yourself, everyone basically does it, nothing complicated, the main thing is to unscrew everything and not break it, disconnect the connector. And check the bulbs to see if they are all intact, check the contacts. Maybe some of the light bulbs have burned out and it seems that the light is getting worse.

I also had this problem. The backlight inexplicably disappeared and then turned on again. It's all about the cigarette lighter illumination. The contact shorts and the brains turn off the backlight. I unscrewed the cover under the gearshift lever and wrapped the wires near the cigarette lighter with electrical tape. All OK.

There's a spinner there. Adjusting the brightness of the shield. You need to twist it, it won’t help, either replace it or remove it completely and do it directly.

If the instrument lighting on the Lada Kalina stops lighting, then you cannot delay fixing the problem. This must be done as soon as possible. In most cases, it will take a maximum of 30–50 minutes to fix the problem.
