Life tests of Lada Vesta SW and Lada Vesta SW Cross

  • This time we did not limit ourselves to the standard set of tests, but used the cars for their intended purpose - we went on a trip to the edge of the Tver region, to the city of Vesyegonsk.

    Lada Vesta SW

The debut was supposed to take place a year ago, but after a change in the leadership of AVTOVAZ, the premiere was postponed. The range includes an off-road modification, SW Cross. Engines - 1.6 and 1.8. Boxes - 5-speed manual and robot.

    ENGINES:

    petrol: 1.6 (106 hp) - from 639,900 rubles. 1.8 (122 hp) - from 697,900 rubles.

    Kia cee'd SW

The second generation car was introduced in 2012, and three years later it was restyled. In addition to the station wagon, there is a hatchback. The range of engines includes petrol 1.4 and 1.6. 6-speed gearboxes: manual, automatic and robot. Assembly - in Kaliningrad, at .

    ENGINES:

    petrol: 1.4 (100 hp) - from 899,900 rubles. 1.6 (130 hp) - from 949,900 rubles. 1.6 (135 hp) - from RUB 1,159,900.

    Ford Focus Turnier

The third generation car debuted at the end of 2010, and sales began a year later. At the same time, a station wagon appeared. In 2014, restyling was carried out. Assembly and sales of the updated car in Russia began in 2015. With the update, the 2-liter engine disappeared from the range, replaced by an EcoBoost 1.5 paired with a 6-speed automatic. Assembly - in Vsevolozhsk.

    ENGINES:

    petrol: 1.6 (105 hp) - from 962,500 rubles. 1.6 (125 hp) - from 997,500 rubles. 1.5T (150 hp) - from RUB 1,227,500.

  • Lateral inferior

The way to the heart of a station wagon is through the trunk. It largely shapes the appearance of the car, and Vesta SW is in complete order with this. In Tolyatti they did not follow the path of the “eleventh” or the Priora, when a large suitcase of the cargo compartment was attached to the stern. The sloping roof and heavily piled-up rear pillars give Vesta every right to bear the name of a “sport wagon”. The image is associated not with a summer resident hung with seedlings, but with a fit tourist (or even a tourist!) with a neat, fashionable backpack on his back. Is the backpack roomy?

    FORD FOCUS TURNIER

Yes, this is the most thoughtful trunk I have ever seen on a domestic car! Double bottom with a large underground, in which there was room for a full spare wheel. A good impression is enhanced by little things like side pockets, hooks and nets. Of course, the cluttered counters limit the capacity, and the ceiling is low. So sport dominates over tourism here. I remember I spent the night in my station wagon a couple of times... Shall we repeat the experiment?

I tried to settle down in Vesta with a sleeping bag - and immediately hit my head on the ceiling: I wouldn’t be able to sit down for the coming sleep. In Side, such an embarrassment did not happen: the ceiling is higher. The trunk is noticeably larger, and they haven’t forgotten about the underground with a cool organizer. The egg-shaped opening was disappointing—you can’t fit a large box in.

    KIA CEE'D SW

The Focus does not have any underground space - the kinematics of the rear suspension, redesigned for the “barn”, forced the space under the floor to be limited. Only a dock with a set of road tools fit in there. But the trunk is the most spacious, and its shape (and opening) is close to the ideal - a cube. In addition, Ford has a minimum loading height, and the bumper is trimmed with unpainted plastic, so it is difficult to damage the paintwork during loading. And this does not mean that Ford gives the impression of a mossy business executive - the station wagon is very harmonious!

    LADA VESTA SW

    Landing is announced

But there was a mistake with the back row of the Focus, which cannot be corrected with an update. Everything is fine if the passengers are not taller than 175 cm. Then the rear seats are comfortable and there is enough space. But being over one hundred and eighty tall is a problem. The amount of space will remain only overhead, and in other directions there will be complete failure.

Cee'd against the backdrop of Focus is like an alien from a different class. There is a sufficient supply of air above the hairstyle and there is enough space for the legs.

    FORD FOCUS TURNIER

Vesta formally lives in a lower segment, but it offers rear passengers no less space, and in terms of pleasant little things like heated seats, it is in no way inferior to its competitors. But the front part of the cabin gives away its class affiliation. And the plastic is hard, and the window buttons are cheap, and the feeling of the elbow is sharper in the Vesta. As you walk, the glass of coffee will fall out of the shallow glass holder. Well, at least the defective armrest between the front seats, which we “kicked” in the sedan, has given way to a decent central box. And the basic ergonomics in the Lada are excellent: the comfortable steering wheel fits into your hands, and we have repeatedly praised the Vesta seat for its excellent profile and wide range of adjustments.

    KIA CEE'D SW

The Kia's seat also moves within a respectable range. And the soft top panel facing the driver hints at the cockpit. But the chair itself is worse - the back presses unpleasantly in the lumbar region. Among the advantages are a lot of compartments and “secret places” into which you can put everything that is lying around in your pockets before a long journey. Ford is not so generous with space and literally covers the driver and front passenger with an array of front panel. But there are no less compartments and cup holders. There are zero questions regarding ergonomics. Excellent steering wheel with pleasant leather, excellent seat with developed lateral support and adjustable lumbar support.

    LADA VESTA SW

Of our trio, the most comfortable driving position is provided by the Focus, which was confirmed by the forced march of half a thousand kilometers to Vesyegonsk. It would have better visibility, otherwise the massive windshield pillars are aggravated by small mirrors and a wide sector of the windshield that cannot be cleaned.

Kia took visibility more seriously and made small windows at the base of the A-pillars, but the Koreans didn’t have enough for large mirrors.

People in Togliatti know firsthand how critically important good visibility is on dirty roads - Vesta got large mirrors, and her blind spots are much smaller.

Results of the 60-hour endurance race

    Brake pad wear:

    1. Hyundai Creta - 1.83 mm/1000 km. That is, their resource is about 45,000 km.
    2. Ford Focus - 2.5 mm/1000 km (33,000 km).
    3. Lada Vesta SW - 3.17 mm/1000 km (23,000 km).
    4. Lada Vesta SW Cross - 3.69 mm/1000 km (21,000 km).

Before the start of the tests, the engine oil in all cars was changed to new one. At the end of the marathon, oil samples were taken and sent to the laboratory for analysis:

    • In Lada Vesta SW, Lada Vesta SW Cross and Ford Focus, all indicators are normal. There is silicon, which indicates the infiltration of the finest road dust. This is normal after a certain number of kilometers of mud have been covered.
    • Not only silicon was found in the Hyundai Creta, but also an increased content of copper. Judging by its quantity, the engine was wearing out three times more intensively than during normal operation.

We were looking for the maximum temperature at which cars start. To simulate short city trips in winter, the cars were frozen to -25 °C, then the engines were started. They turned it off when the coolant reached 40 °C. Then - freezing again and starting again. And so - ten cycles for each machine. After completing the test cycle, oil samples were taken:

    • An increased iron content was observed in the engine oil of all cars - this is a direct consequence of engine wear.
    • In Hyundai Creta, in addition to the high metal content in the oil, its viscosity has dropped so much that it can harm the engine. Factory oil is not ready for such conditions.
    • Lada Vesta SW, Lada Vesta SW Cross and Ford Focus also showed high levels of metals in the oil, but the situation is better.

    Conclusion

    (link to ZR article):

    • Ford Focus swallows even serious potholes without problems, the engine tolerates heavy loads and high speeds well. But on a snow-covered highway, the Focus instantly becomes covered in snow, and the modest ground clearance forces you to be especially vigilant on uneven roads.
    • Hyundai Creta behaved excellently on broken dirt roads and gave no cause for concern in ruts. But it lacks stability on slippery roads, which is especially noticeable compared to other cars. A glitch in the tire pressure monitoring system also alerted me. The most serious complaint arose after oil analysis. The Creta does not tolerate frequent cold starts and constant high revs.
    • Lada Vesta SW is a real SUV. The ground clearance is higher, the energy intensity of the suspension is higher. It is necessary to understand the voltage in the network. Devices are not allowed to turn off even at the highest speeds! The same goes for the Cross version.
    • The Lada Vesta SW Cross is annoying due to excessive body rocking, and low-profile tires reduce the effect of the impenetrable chassis - a hernia, a punctured tire and a jammed wheel are witnesses to this. The engines of both Wests proved to be resistant to heavy loads. It was their engines that showed the least wear - even after cold starts.

    Heating efficiency:

    • Ford Focus
    • Hyundai Creta

    The trailer will move

I liked Vesta not only for its ergonomics and visibility, but also for its chassis setup. I had no doubt about the stability of a carriage-type car on a straight line - after all, the body shape contributes to this more than that of a sedan, which is confirmed by years of my practice as a barn builder. A nice bonus is that the handling of the Vesta SW is just as clear as that of a sedan. The station wagon obediently writes an arc, without showing a tendency to excessive rolls and without bucking the more massive stern, and in the extreme it is not prone to breaking the rear axle, which is the sin of station wagons. For example, Kia cee'd.

    FORD FOCUS TURNIER

Up to a certain point, the cee'd pleases with clear reactions and dives into turns no worse than the Vesta, although the steering force here is not so precise. But when you sharply avoid obstacles, a skeleton in the trunk comes out. A slight drift of the front end is replaced by a stall of the rear wheels, and all this is accompanied by a series of parasitic vibrations. Of course, the exchange rate stability system is on alert and will not allow trouble, but it is not pleasant.

But Focus knows a lot about driving. On it the road is a thrill not only when it is absolutely straight. Live feedback on the steering wheel is seasoned with precise, without a shadow of delay, reactions. Steer close to neutral encourages you to increase the pace. The main thing is to secure the cargo so that it does not fly all over the trunk. A living “barn” in which it’s really nice to go on long trips.

    KIA CEE'D SW

The test Vesta with a top-end 1.8-liter 122-horsepower engine paired with a manual gearbox is a real winner: almost a hundred “horses” per ton. It’s pointless to compete with a turbocharged Focus, but it will certainly give the 130-horsepower Sid a light!

Not given. No matter how hard I squeezed all the juice out of the Vesta’s engine, I couldn’t accelerate to a hundred in less than 12 seconds. In my opinion, the well-known 1.6‑liter engine performs just as well. Where did the “extra” Newton meters and “horses” go? It looks like they were trampled by the ragged nature of the engine. If you can enjoy the elasticity of the base unit endlessly, then a more powerful engine will not give you such pleasure: in transient modes, dips in traction are felt every now and then.

Kia is also not a standard, but traction control is much more pleasant, which is facilitated by the logical 6-speed automatic, although not the most efficient.

The impression of the Focus automatic was spoiled by the inconvenient manual mode keys located at the end of the selector. But Ford is sensitive to the touch of the pedal - thanks to the one and a half liter turbo engine. Its pressure is brighter than that of its competitors - the traction available from the very bottom is much more impressive. From a standstill, the Ford reaches a hundred in just over nine seconds.

    LADA VESTA SW

And how good are the brakes! Both the efficiency is on par and the drive is informative. Kia is also not lagging behind, and Lada is no slouch - after all, cars with a 1.8 engine now have disc mechanisms at work at the rear. I can’t say that there were any complaints about the “drums,” but it became much more convenient to control the deceleration. This is the best braking system for domestic cars today.

The smoothness of the Vesta compared to some domestic models is not standard. But Lada even digests broken asphalt on the road to Vesyegonsk without heartburn. The entire spectrum of road imperfections dissolves without a trace in the shock absorbers, leaving behind only a light, almost musical aftertaste. At the same time, the car cannot be called noisy, because Vesta is especially well insulated from road noise. Aerodynamic rustles are felt only at speeds above 120 km/h, and the engine makes itself known loudest. Well, another “cricket” that has taken up residence in a completely new salon.

Focus and cee'd are quiet, because their interiors are made of more than just hard plastic. The Focus engine also screams at high notes, but its timbre is pleasant to the ear. Road noise is muffled a little worse than in the Lada, but the overall background noise is noticeably weaker. What can’t be said about Kia: “sandblasting” is a loud soloist.

Is it possible to dive into the abyss of dead roads just as recklessly on Side? Up to a certain point, yes, but when the depth of the holes becomes indecent, breakdowns increasingly scream about the need to slow down. Ford turned out to be more tolerant, despite the 17‑inch wheels.

    Where it all began

I like traveling very much. Therefore, I can cover more than 30,000 km in a year. Hatchback cars are my preferred cars. Lada Vesta became the second sedan in our family, after the 99th.

I started thinking about purchasing it from the moment it was first mentioned on the Internet. The final decision was made in May, when I saw an exhibition copy in Moscow. Then I was pleasantly surprised by the interior of the cabin and the lateral support of the seats. I promised myself: if Vesta came off the assembly line in the same form, I would buy it, regardless of what the reviews would be.

In November, Lada Grant's insurance ran out. Considering that it was taken as a temporary phenomenon, I seriously thought about buying a new car.

I decided to take a car from a showroom, but it would be quite affordable. When I arrived at the AvtoVAZ showroom, I saw a white Lada Largus Cross. I was delighted: my favorite station wagon, chic body kits, rare 7-seater configuration. I put it in reserve.

Returned to the salon with my wife. And here's the bummer. My wife criticized the car; her reviews were unflattering: she called Largus a coffin carrier. So, having had a light sip, we went home and continued to think.

I want to tell you why we couldn’t agree on an opinion. I need a hatchback or station wagon, she wants the car to be beautiful. Remembering our second Focus, we decided to go to Ford dealers. At that moment, déjà vu visited me. The fact is that three years ago, having sold Focus 2, we went to look at the third Focus. And we left the showroom in a Ford Mondeo, albeit a slightly used one (via trade-in). I liked the fact that it was in the maximum configuration, while the Ford was in the basic configuration. And they cost about the same - about 650 thousand rubles.

The Mondeo was pleasantly pleased with its spaciousness and comfort, but the dull engine and the unpleasant aspects of expensive repairs forced it to be sold and bought something new, for a while. According to the recycling program, I handed over the ancient VAZ-2103 and bought a Lada Granta.

    Ticket price

So we got there. Which station wagon performed best on a long journey?

Complaints about the cramped rear row and visibility problems did not prevent Ford from winning a landslide victory. He turned out to be the friendliest on the long trip. The car is the most expensive of the trio - the price is almost one and a half million, but a quarter of this amount was due to numerous expensive options that did not affect the result in any way. The only serious advantage was the turbo engine, which rivals do not even have in theory. But if we had a Focus with a 125-horsepower naturally aspirated engine, it would also have won, albeit with a smaller margin.

Cee'd took second place. A solid and beautiful all-rounder. At the right price: the test car costs 1,100,000 rubles. All other things being equal, it is about fifty thousand cheaper than Focus. But if behavior on the road is not the last thing for you, then the choice in favor of the “Korean” is not obvious.

Lada is in third place, with a slight lag. If we take into account the one and a half times difference in price and the fact that Vesta SW fought with station wagons of a higher class, this defeat is comparable to a victory.

    WHERE TRAINS DO NOT GO

If a metropolitan resident or foreigner wants to know what the real Russian outback is like, he does not have to go beyond the Urals. You can go to Vesyegonsk, a city on the outskirts of the Tver region.

Almost all the houses here are wooden, there is no centralized gas supply. In autumn and early spring, the roads are covered with a thick layer of dirt from the dirt roadsides. This city on the shore of the Rybinsk Reservoir is small and very poor. The condition of the roads is simply terrible in some places. Especially on the northern border of the city, at the exit to Ustyuzhna. There has been no railway communication with Moscow and St. Petersburg for five years. And the local airfield, from where flights to Tver and Cherepovets operated, has long been abandoned.

But the city was not always like this. In the 16th-19th centuries, Ves Egonskaya (as this village was then called) was a large trading center; honey, furs, and fish were traded here. Unfortunately, in the early 40s of the twentieth century, the city was almost completely flooded when the Rybinsk Reservoir was filled. All the current buildings appeared later. One of the few reminders of the life of Vesyegonsk before the arrival of the big water is the ruins of the Kazan Cathedral on the very shore.

    Buying Vesta

In 2015, I accidentally stopped by the same salon where I bought Grana, and I was invited to the evening presentation of Vesta. The first thing my wife and I heard when we arrived at the event was the price - 514 thousand, as well as rave reviews.

That's why we went looking for a manager who had worked with us before. He offered a mid-spec gray Vesta with the Optima package. It includes glass heating and casting. We didn’t think twice and immediately signed a purchase agreement.

The next day I took the wheels on winter tires from the Lada Granta to the salon. The fact is that the Vesta we chose also had wheels with a radius of 15. I was wildly surprised when it turned out in the salon that for some reason the Vesta had wheels with a radius of 16. The manager said that this was a gift from the salon. But if we want, they can replace them. I decided to keep the wheels, but had to buy tires. By the way, I found it via the Internet and purchased it much cheaper than what was offered in the salon.

Among the additional accessories that they always try to impose in the cabin, I finally decided to put protection on the crankcase, laid down floor mats and purchased a new motorist kit.

Then the insurance saga began. We wanted to arrange it on the spot in the salon. But the prices made the hairs on our heads stand up. OSAGO cost more than 17,000, CASCO - about 73,000. The manager tried to convince us that now all insurance companies have such prices. We did not give in to persuasion. As a result, their insurance company issued an MTPL policy for 8,000, but changed their mind about applying for CASCO insurance.

    Exterior and interior

Both models were created with a sporty look in mind. The designer completely succeeded in achieving a modern exterior and interior.

    • Ford Focus stands out with its muscular features, large wheels and harmonious stampings on the side. The stern of the third Focus model attracts with its dimensions. Inside the car there is a classic arrangement of electrical elements that work flawlessly and are conveniently located at the driver’s fingertips.
    • Lada Vesta looks aggressive and dynamic. It fascinates with its predatory frontal look, stylish “X-stampings” of the profile and massive rear elements. The interior of the domestic novelty is memorable for its good visibility and spaciousness, and the instruments, steering wheel and console are quite ergonomically built in for use;

    Competitors' gearboxes and engines

↑ Main advantages of Lada Vesta

Lada Vesta is a modern car with good build quality. Compared to Ford Forcus, it has the following advantages:

    • large viewing mirrors;
    • higher ground clearance;
    • comfortable fit and location of all controls in the cabin;
    • better power steering performance;
    • more legroom in the rear passenger seats;
    • significantly more space in the trunk and additional compartments for storing automotive small items.

Comparison of Lada Vesta and Ford Focus 3 in the category of internal combustion engines and gearboxes

The American brand offers a large assortment of power units versus a small selection of those from its opponent. There are three petrol engines with a volume of 1.6 liters. and two - 2.0 liters. Ford Focus also uses diesel engines with the same displacement. The car is equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission and a PowerShift robotic transmission with two clutches.

For Lada Vesta there are currently only two engines: 1.6/106 and 1.8/122. Soon a reliable unit from the Renault-Nissan alliance will be installed under the hood. The car has a domestic and French 5-speed manual transmission, and instead of an automatic transmission they use a Russian-made AMT robot.

Opponents' robotic transmission raises some questions in its operation. Owners complain about glitches and jerks.

    Guarantee of competitors and Vesta

The warranty for the new Vesta is 6 years or 100 thousand km (whichever comes first). This is enough to forget about all problems for years. The warranty on the Ford Focus station wagon is 3 years or 100,000 km. The situation is approximately the same with other cars; Warranty for Skoda Rapid Spaceback - 3 years or 100,000 km; Warranty for X-line - 5 years or 150,000 km; Hyundai Creta warranty - 5 years or 150,000 km; The warranty for Hyundai ix 35 is 5 years or 150,000 km; Warranty for Renault Capture - 3 years or 100,000 km; The warranty for Renault Daster is 3 years or 100,000 km.

    Chassis

Lada Vesta and Ford Focus 3 The front suspension of the car is the same: there are ordinary MacPherson struts. At the rear of the Lada Vesta there is a torsion beam, while the American competitor has an independent multi-link suspension. The chassis of competitors is very durable, it allows you to move in urban environments without difficulty. However, there are some rough edges: creaks and rolls when cornering.

    Results

If you compare the Lada Vesta and Ford Focus Three, it turns out that the competitors are quite reliable, look attractive and have high-quality components. They handle the road well, as they have decent engines and a good chassis.

The third generation “American” did not become a bestseller, as it has problems with the “robot”, paintwork and steering wheel, but it has a number of advantages that cover all the shortcomings. Lada Vesta also does not escape problems: the same “robot” and dashboard shortcomings. Cars are worth their money and are waiting for their buyers. What to choose is up to you.

    ↑ Options and prices

As we have already said, Vesta easily competes with foreign cars in all respects. This applies to equipment and prices. In general, it can be noted that in many trim levels the car boasts the presence of the Glonass system, climate control, heated seats, windshield and mirrors, exchange rate stability system and much more.

The basic classic package is pleased with the presence of:

    1. Airbags.
    2. Head restraints for rear passengers.
    3. Automatic door locking.
    4. Automatic door unlocking.
    5. Functions for turning on the alarm in case of an accident.
    6. Immobilizer.
    7. Security alarm.
    8. On-board computer and much more.

The cost of a car in the basic “Classic” configuration starts from 404 thousand rubles. The Classic Start package includes air conditioning and a cool box. The Comfort package is rich in headrests on the rear passenger seats, expanded seat adjustment, parking sensors, etc.

The richest configuration – “Lux” – will cost the buyer about 630 thousand rubles. It will already have a leather steering wheel, cruise control, heated windshield and much more.

Ford Focus has 3 main configurations: edition, white and black, titanium. Even in the basic configuration, the car is equipped quite well, but there is one “but”: cost. It starts from 800 thousand rubles.
