Test drive Lada Priora

The “Priors” family now has a complete set - a station wagon has been added to the produced versions of the model with sedan and hatchback bodies. Moreover, changes occurred not only with the car body.

COMPETITION in market conditions is a great thing! It seems that Russian automakers have finally begun to understand this.

At least the “Lada Priora” station wagon, even with a purely “theoretical” acquaintance, clearly differs in a positive direction from similar models in a similar price segment. In the “Lux” package, for example, rain and light sensors are installed here. In cars of similar cost, you won’t even get such equipment as an option.

Well, the VAZ station wagon is already equipped with climate control, ABS, electric windows and alloy wheels in the basic version.

Once inside the cabin, I almost reflexively noticed the quality of its build. After all, on the Priora sedan, which I had the opportunity to test two years ago, the glove box was difficult to close, the exterior mirrors vibrated, and the hatch for transporting long objects located in the back of the rear seat jammed..

And in general, everything there somehow creaked suspiciously and did not inspire any confidence. Therefore, with particular passion, I walked my hand over the dashboard and interior trim. But this time I didn’t find any outright hackwork: the gaps between the panels and interior parts became smoother and smaller, nothing in the cabin seemed to creak.. Well, you can get under way.

I have a presentiment of how knowledgeable people are trying to pull me back, to stop me: they say, tell me about the main thing - about practicality, the volume of the luggage compartment! After all, this is a station wagon! And you’re on your way right away...

We must, of course, pay attention to this. Although, unfortunately, there is nothing special to talk about practicality.

The trunk volume of the station wagon is exactly the same as that of the predecessor “Lada-111” - 450 liters (if you load luggage up to the window line) and 777 liters (with the rear seats folded).

The indicators are mediocre - in other compact class station wagons the cargo compartment capacity is close to, and in some cases exceeds, a thousand liters.

And what’s interesting is that the station wagon is 5.5 cm longer than the “eleventh”, why didn’t the trunk become larger? The fact is that the external dimensions have increased mainly due to the “plumper” bumpers - this has no effect on the internal space.

To be fair, it must be said that the luggage compartment here is well designed. To make loading easier, the edge of the fifth door was placed quite low, for which purpose a recess was specially made in the rear bumper. They provided a net in the trunk and several small metal loops for attaching things. Here the VAZ team also distinguished itself from its competitors.

We find something and lose something.

The trunk volume is not the most impressive - only 450 liters. But a special mesh is provided for securing the load.

Due to unsuccessfully selected suspension settings, the handling of the Lada Priora station wagon is far from ideal.

THERE IS a fairly common misconception that a station wagon can carry heavy loads that a sedan or hatchback cannot.

In fact, the gain is only in the volume of cargo, and the difference in carrying capacity, if we talk about the compact class, as a rule, does not exceed a couple of tens of kilograms.

The Priora station wagon has a carrying capacity at the level of its Western counterparts - 505 kg. But compared to its brothers - the sedan and hatchback - it increased by only 15 kg.

However, even because of this small difference, the designers had to slightly change the suspension settings. And as a result... the car's driving performance has become worse.

...Roads in the Kaliningrad region, as in any other part of Russia, are far from ideal. However, the station wagon's suspension copes with potholes more or less tolerably. But a series of gentle “waves” on the asphalt made our car sway so much that it was time to stock up on seasickness pills.

Actually, this is a long-standing disease of models of the “tenth” family, but the “Priora” sedans and hatchbacks have already recovered from it. And here’s a surprise – on the station wagon, the chronic illness made itself known again. The reason is the unsuccessfully selected characteristics of the springs and shock absorbers.

Therefore, in more or less serious turns, the Priora does not perform well and reluctantly reacts to the rotation of the steering wheel - first it almost completely selects the suspension travel, and only then with a strong trim on board it goes into a turn.

Representatives of AvtoVAZ did not argue with this opinion about the driving performance of the station wagon. We agreed that it is necessary to improve the behavior of the car on the road, to more carefully select the characteristics of springs and shock absorbers - according to engineers, this work is already underway.

Note. Of course, in addition to the quality of life indicator, the quality of interior elements also affects the high level of sound comfort. Called a budget station wagon with increased cross-country ability. The body was assembled based on Dasia/Renault Logan. The car was initially adapted for the market of Eastern European countries.

Even in the basic version of Logan, engineers took effective measures to enhance anti-corrosion protection, using protective inserts for the wheel arches. In addition, anti-corrosion and anti-gravity protection is installed over larger areas than before (at Samarov’s vehicles), with a thicker layer of mastic.

The most popular version of the Grant today is the sedan. The liftback has also become a good seller, but it is still far from being a sedan. Being a successor of the “Kalina” traditions, the sedan was even assembled on its platform and borrowed a lot of things from Kalina: body, chassis, interior. As you can see, the dimensions of this VAZ model are 22 cm longer than those of the Kalina, but 7 cm shorter than the “Samarov” modifications.

The radiator grille has received a new corporate style, now resembling a Volga rook, which is held in place by a powerful molding. This grille cools the engine compartment more effectively, as it is equipped with large “nostrils”;

As for the trim levels, the new sedan can be purchased in 3 versions. The coolest is the Lux, equipped with a 98-horsepower engine and featuring a completely different level of interior equipment.

Among the features of the Granta body, one can highlight the good quality of the assembly and good quality of materials. The body parts are connected to each other using high-tech automated German welding. This allowed domestic producers to reach a completely different level.

We also highlight the good quality of painting and resistance to anti-corrosion treatment. Both of these processes are also carried out on German-made automated lines with excellent precision.

The modified body geometry gave the new Russian car a stylish, aspirational lines. This had a beneficial effect not only on the exterior, but also made it possible to significantly reduce the AED resistance. Now this coefficient is 0.36, which is more than 6 percent less than the base model. In addition, the pointed hood is less harmful to pedestrians, experts say.

Important functions are performed by overhangs:

The Granta's rear overhang has been extended by 15 cm. In turn, this makes the interior even more spacious than before;
The front overhang is designed in such a way as to reduce the thermal load on the engine and its environment.

As for other body differences:

The underbody was specially designed for the new Russian car. Special metal sheets with special hardening and double-sided galvanization are a good solution that significantly increases service life;
As for quality of life, in this particular case the indicator is increased by 12 percent when compared with Kalina;
The weight of the car was reduced by as much as 40 kg, which could not but affect the handling. Now it has become much easier to maneuver in city tight rows, it is more convenient to take turns;
It has become easier to install an additional roof rack, since the manufacturer has provided good, strong fastenings on top of the door seals.

Unfortunately, Granta did not lose the traditional VAZ “sores”:

It is inconvenient to adjust the side mirrors. But this is not necessary, since they provide quite good visibility;
On the other hand, short drivers will have poor visibility of the road due to the raised lines of the hood and trunk.
