Let's check how the cars of these two brands cope on the country's roads. To begin with, let's compare the technical characteristics of both proposed models.
The modern, harmonious proportions of Kalina are pleasing with their streamlinedness compared to the angular, at first glance, 111th VAZ. Body lines without visible gaps. The doors open 90 degrees, and the trunk opens 10 cm wider than that of the “eleventh” and is clearly fixed, which is convenient for owners. The trunk door can be closed from the inside. For comparison, the trunk of the VAZ 2111 is in no way inferior, and even superior in size.
Inside the cabin there is relative silence, no engine detonation, no crackling of the front panel, no creaking seats, in comparison with the same VAZ 111. The insides of the “eleventh” are noticeably different from the Kalina, but the advantages of the 111 are the possibility of greater cargo transportation. Also, the “eleventh” can easily accommodate people with fairly large dimensions.
In comparison with the Zhiguli of the Soviet period - heaven and earth. The seat of the Lada 2111 is not at all suitable for a long trip, it contributes to poor posture, which is not at all unimportant during a long trip. The interior has an elegant panel, pleasant to the touch and the overall appearance is impressive, but it cannot compare with the high-quality design and ergonomics of the front panel of the Kalina.

Kalina’s significant superiority over the “eleventh” is its modernized interior; the space in front of the rear seats has not been affected, despite its smaller dimensions compared to its rival. The upholstery is made in the best colors and from quality materials. The car has an excellent viewing angle of the road due to the high seating position and large mirrors.
The dimensions of the Kalina (length: 4040 mm, width: 1700 mm) are more compact, 24.5 cm shorter than the “eleventh” (length: 4285 mm, width 1680 mm), which is especially convenient when maneuvering on tight and narrow streets, it is easier to park in our “soviet” courtyards, while maintaining space inside the car.
Of course, the capacity of the VAZ 2111 is much larger, the loading height is smaller (by 80 mm), the threshold is lower, and when you extend the seats in the cabin, you can transport long-sized luggage, but other advantages of the Kalina overshadow these minor shortcomings. For example, the height-adjustable steering wheel is optimal in size, and the on-board computer fits well into the design of the panel. The seats are modern, comfortable and easy to fold.
The stove has air flow guides, unlike the VAZ 2111, where the air flow goes to the bottom and unevenly heats the interior, the stove itself is powerful and after 15 minutes warming up in the car is ensured. The interior color is made in light soft colors, so the interior volume is visually larger.
The doors of the car open wide, making it easy for the driver and passengers to get in. In comparison with the “eleventh”, in which the backrest latches are pulled out with great difficulty. As mentioned above, the VAZ 2111 benefits from its spaciousness, comfort is maintained, an advantageous solution is to install roof rails, this additionally allows you to transport up to fifty kilograms of luggage.

The coexistence of the previous model and the new one in the same market is a worldwide practice. As soon as the new version finally puts the previous one to shame, production of the old model is stopped or transferred to other countries. So the painfully dear sedans and station wagons of the tenth family, having left the assembly line in Togliatti, appeared in the model range of the Ukrainian corporation Bogdan.
The new VIN code did not scare off fans: in Russia alone in 2010, more than 5 thousand Extogliatti small cars were sold, and in the first half of 2011 - more than 3 thousand. Since we have a dime a dozen sedans in this class, we decided to understand why aliens from the past captivate buyers using the example of the Bogdan-2111 station wagon and its direct relative, the Lada-Priora.

The car is a deep modernization of the VAZ-2111 with a completely changed body design, including the rear part with original body panels and lighting equipment. The rear side windows are installed without plastic covers; their shape has also changed - they expand upward. The rear lights from the door were moved to the body and installed vertically. There are brackets on the wheel arches of the trunk to secure the cargo. The gaps between the body panels are large in some places, uneven in others, but not scary - it seems that the quality of Prior production is slowly but improving. The luxury station wagon has roof rails with three fastenings. The stamps for them are made in Japan, and the roof rails themselves are designed for loads weighing up to 50 kilograms. Priora also provides other nice options. For example, the back door can be opened in three ways - using the key, pressing the alarm key fob button, or directly from the cabin.
Interior
The “geometry” of the station wagon’s trunk has remained virtually unchanged: the opening is large, the sill is low, and the volume is 100 liters more than that of the “universal” Kalina: 444 liters versus 350 liters in the “under-shelf” version. But if in the VAZ-2111 the door was covered from the inside with an unsightly “rag,” now it has a neat plastic casing and a convenient handle for closing.
Alas, the interior space is comparable only to modern models one class, if not two lower, which is enhanced by obvious ergonomic flaws: for example, the length of the front seat slides was reduced, resulting in a tall driver (more than 185 cm), who was relatively comfortably located in the “ten” , in the Priora he feels clearly cramped, which is aggravated by the lack of seat height adjustment in any configuration; in addition, there is no reach adjustment for the steering column.
The Priora station wagon was first officially presented in October 2008 at the Krasnodar Mobi 2008 exhibition, but in fact the all-Russian presentation of the model that completes the Priora family took place at the Auto+Avtomechanika Motor Show in St. Petersburg on October 29, 2008. In December 2008, AvtoVAZ OJSC produced the first pilot batch of Lada Priora station wagons. In January 2009, stamping production was reorganized for mass production of the station wagon. This is a VAZ-2112, which has been restyled. Thus, in fact we are talking about one car model. It is not possible to purchase a new VAZ today, since it is not produced. Let's talk about what is typical for these cars, which have such a common part as a body (can be of several types: hatchback, station wagon and sedan). Everyone chooses it at their own discretion. And do this in both models. But body parameters can differ, for example, length and height. Their difference is small, but still there, which also needs to be taken into account.
One of the most important parts of a car is the engine. Let's compare these devices in these models. So, the volume, type of fuel, number of cylinders and their location are the same. If we talk about power plants, in general they are quite reliable (at least when compared with the “decimal” ones). The timing system is belt driven. The belt runs for quite a long time - up to 120 thousand kilometers. However, the roller and pump may fail earlier, which leads to a break in the timing drive or overheating of the motor in the first and second cases, respectively.
By the way, the “Prior” engine has different pistons, crankshaft and lightweight connecting rods. The resource of the internal combustion engine is about 300-350 thousand kilometers.
Among the common problems on Priora is difficult starting. The reason for this is a low-quality standard battery. Its service life is no more than one year. The owners strongly recommend replacing it with a better one so as not to experience problems with starting, especially in winter.
Now about the transmission. All power units are paired with a five-speed manual transmission. It has been significantly improved and is now equipped with a cable drive. Shifting gears is clear, without hesitation. The clutch lasts up to 100 thousand, depending on driving style. The box itself has no major flaws. The recommended transmission oil change interval is 60 thousand kilometers.

The engine used is the already familiar VAZ-21116 eight-valve engine. It is capable of producing 90 horsepower. The line also includes a 16-valve engine with a capacity of 98 horsepower. Various foreign-made components and parts were used in the design of the engines. Due to this, it was possible to significantly increase the overall resource of power units. So, a new, lightweight one from Federal Mogul was used. The timing belt, as well as the tension pulley for it, were manufactured by Gates. The manufacturer claims that the resource of the kit is more than 200 thousand km. In the maximum configuration, the VAZ-217030 comes with a 1.8-liter engine with a capacity of 120 hp. This is the version I suggested. But there are very few such copies. They were made to order.

When assembling the engines, American-made parts and components were used:
- 39% lighter connecting rod and piston group - manufactured by Federal Mogul;
- The timing belt and tensioner pulley are from Gates Rubber Company.
The engines are powered by a standard VAZ 5-speed manual transmission with a reinforced clutch. The gearbox drive is made on closed type bearings.
Chassis
The chassis is structurally a long-proven, but somewhat modernized, “figure-of-eight”. The independent front suspension of the VAZ 2171 - McPherson with barrel springs - is made according to a scheme with straight forged arms and diagonal reaction rods. At the rear there is a torsion beam with new shock absorbers and springs that are stiffer than those of the sedan. Anti-roll bars are installed at the front and rear. According to experts, the chassis of the VAZ 2171 Priora station wagon is ideally suited to the domestic road surface. Its stability is not affected by changes in the profile of suburban highways, and you can drive along a road covered with potholes without slowing down.
Important! During vigorous maneuvering at high speed, the body begins to sway violently, but this driving style is not the standard mode of a family station wagon.

There are massive roof rails on the roof. True, judging by the reviews, none of the owners practically used them. It is worth noting that the angle of the rear door pillar has been reduced. This has a positive effect on the ease of landing. Getting into a station wagon is much more comfortable than sitting in a sedan.
Note that in 2011 the car underwent a slight restyling. Thus, the Lada Priora station wagon body remained virtually unchanged. Among the differences are a larger radiator grille with chrome trim, as well as a reshaped bumper with different foglights. The rest of the car remained the same.
From the rear, the car doesn't look like any kind of van. This is facilitated by large vertical lights and the successful completion of the rear pillar. The trunk lid is quite large and has heated glass. The bumper is raised high, which contributes to good cross-country ability.

The Lada Priora station wagon has a spacious trunk. So, in the five-seater version its volume is 444 liters. But as independent tests have shown, the actual volume is only 416 liters.
