Vertical adjustment of the lock

If the hood does not want to close normally (you slam it, put pressure on it, but it still closes with difficulty, or does not lock in the closed position at all), or a rattling noise appears when driving on our perfectly smooth roads (sometimes it is noticeable even just when the engine), then adjustment in the vertical direction is necessary. Namely, adjusting the length of the lock latch.

To do this, use a 19 mm wrench to loosen the lock nut on the latch, holding the latch itself from turning with a flat-head screwdriver.


Latch length adjustment

If the hood is poorly or not at all fixed in the closed position, then you need to slightly increase the length of the latch, which we will achieve by unscrewing it with a screwdriver.

If the hood rattles, on the contrary, you need to shorten the latch by tightening it several turns inward. The required latch length is determined experimentally.

Got rid of the problem? Then tighten the locknut (don’t forget to hold the latch with a screwdriver), check it again and rejoice!

Horizontal adjustment of the lock

If there are problems with opening, or if there is a metallic knock when closing, the lock requires horizontal adjustment.


Adjusting the latch position

To do this, we also loosen the lock nut and slightly move (not twist, but move) the latch in the desired direction.

When adjusted correctly, everything should close and open well. Without any effort. Ideally, the hood should slam shut completely when released from a height of 20-30 cm and snap open when pulled by the drive handle in the cabin, only being secured by a safety hook.

Hood lock device

VAZ classics from 2101 to 2107 provide for opening the lid in the direction from the windshield. Starting from the VAZ 2108, the unit opens in the opposite direction. These modifications to the cover did not affect the design of the lock: both the VAZ 2115 and the “kopek” are supposed to have the same parts of the locking mechanism with minimal changes.

The same standard cables are suitable for VAZs up to and including model 7. From the eighth model onwards, the length of the standard cable has been increased by 90%.

Main details (using example 2109):

The operating principle is extremely simple. When the lid is closed, the locking pin fits into the frame hole and is held in place by a spring. With the help of a cable from the handle of the assembly in the cabin, the pin is released, the hood bounces slightly, held by the safety hook. A second press on the cover removes the hook and the engine compartment opens.

How to open the hood of a VAZ 2109 if the cable breaks? This is a small problem, but still a problem. Especially when it's cold outside. Most often, it is in such weather that this problem happens. Another, more common reason for cable failure is its wear and tear.

The cable, or rod, is a single-core or multi-core steel wire placed in a sheath, on top of which there is a metal braid. Its main function is to open the hood by mechanically acting on the lock handle. To solve the problem of how to open the hood of a VAZ, you need to take certain actions.

First you need to find the place where the cable broke. For this purpose, it is necessary to inspect the hood opening mechanism of the VAZ 2109 car or those places where access is still preserved. You need to start by examining the lock handle.

This mechanism includes a lock that keeps the hood closed and a hook that prevents the hood from opening spontaneously. Their location is the front of the hood. The lock handle is brought into the cabin and is located on the left under the dashboard. Having decided on the cliff, you can begin the work itself.

There are different options here. If the cable breaks inside the cabin, then, using pliers, you need to pull out its remains from under the panel, grab the edge of the rod (core), but in no case by the braid, and pull quite strongly towards yourself, i.e. to the side salon

Moreover, this must be done smoothly, without jerking. Otherwise, you can tear it elsewhere. To prevent the cable from falling out of the pliers, you need to make a loop at its end and thread it onto the tool. Maybe the hood will open.

The cable broke under the hood

Perhaps the cable broke under the hood. In this case, the following algorithm of actions is proposed:

If possible, drive the VAZ 2109 onto a lift, overpass or inspection hole. Can be jacked up

At the same time, in case the jack fails, insure against the car falling. Carefully remove the engine crankcase protection, which is held on by several screws. Do the same with the tin boot to provide the necessary space for further manipulations.

  1. Insert your hand into the hole between the radiator and the engine compartment. Feel the ring where the rod is secured. This is not difficult, it is located directly next to the hood latch. Reach the ring from below and forcefully pull or press to the left, towards the driver's door. If even then the hood of the VAZ 2109 does not open, then at the same time you need to press on it from above. This way, the ring will become pliable. A little effort and the hood is open. It is better if 2 people participate in the process.
  2. After this, you need to dismantle the old torn cable and install a new one. The work will be greatly simplified if one person tensions the spring at the lock, and the other fixes the cable on the handle of the locking device. At first you will have to vigorously tap the hood on the body, but over time everything will work out.

There are also other options for opening the hood.

  1. Lift the hood of the VAZ 2109 and try to open its lock with a long wire.
  2. Contact a car repair shop, where the hood will be opened professionally, efficiently and in a short time, the cable will be replaced, and the reason, if it is technical, will be identified and eliminated.
  3. View the instructions for the VAZ 2109 car. As a rule, it indicates possible malfunctions and how to eliminate them. As a last resort, it is advisable to at least familiarize yourself with the layout of the rod.

To make the cable last longer, you need to:

  • lubricate its outlets with lithol;
  • use multi-strand cable, as it is strong, flexible, does not stretch and wears out slowly;
  • Be very careful with the lock handle.

Do not consider the cable for the VAZ hood to be a trifle. This is a full-fledged part of a complex mechanism. Do not replace it with ordinary wire or even rope (such cases are known). It is not safe. Take care of your nerves and health, respect yourself and your car.

Installing the cable

If the cable breaks, it will have to be replaced after opening the hood. For this:

  1. in an auto parts store they select a new spare part, and from the available products it is worth choosing multi-strand cables as the most durable.
  2. a hook is made from wire. The hook must be inserted into the hole under the hood release handle. They will need to hook a strong cord and pull it inside the cabin.
  3. A new cable is tied to the cord and pulled into the cabin.
  4. Next, the new spare part is connected to the hood opening handle and the mechanism for opening its lock.
  5. The entire system assembly is checked for functionality.

In what cases will adjustment help?

Let's list the main malfunctions that you can fix yourself by just adjusting the car hood lock:

  • The hood has become difficult to close; it requires repeated slamming and significant force to close it
  • It has become problematic to open it (we pull and pull, but the reaction is zero)
  • Doesn’t “bounce” when the cable is pulled; when closing, an extraneous knock of metal on metal is heard
  • Rattling when the engine is running, in the pits.

Since it is almost impossible to describe all the models in one article, let’s take as an example a masterpiece of the domestic automobile industry - the VAZ car. Whatever they say, Lada cars roam the expanses of the former CIS more often than any foreign car. And, given their survivability, I think this will last for a long time... And based on the principle that this procedure, on almost all cars, comes down to similar actions (if you do not take into account the design features of the locks), you can derive a general adjustment formula. Let's start adjusting the locks, for example, for VAZ 2108, VAZ 2109, VAZ 21099.

Screwdriver, I usually use a "magic" set.

Oil for lubricating the lock (only liquid oil is suitable; “solidol”, “litol” and other similar lubricants are not suitable, since they harden at low temperatures, which makes the mechanism difficult to operate).
