If the locking is not turned on, then all the rotational energy (conditionally 100%) will be transferred to this wheel, which has no grip with the road surface, and there is also no friction force. In this case, both the rear axle and the wheel on the front axle, which has traction, will not receive rotational energy. In this case the car will not move. But when the center differential lock is turned on, the rotational energy will be distributed equally to the front and rear axles. A condition will arise for the transmission of rotation of the rear wheels that have traction with the road surface. The front wheel, suspended in air, will also spin, but the rear wheels will also begin to rotate.

It is also possible that both the front and rear wheels are weighted diagonally. In this case, locking the center differential will not affect the wheels that are in engagement with the road surface, since the differentials on the axles will rotate exactly those wheels that have the least resistance. The car will not move until artificially created engagement on any weighted wheel (creating an embankment under the wheel, placing stones, etc.). Experienced drivers, by varying the parking brake, level the operation of the gearbox differential, forcing the wheel that has traction with the road to rotate.

Engine

The changes include the installation of more modern and reliable sealing materials with a silicone bead, a new type of water pump oil seal, as well as a new fuel supply system with quick-release connections. Transmission

Exterior and interior

The updated version of the Niva Lada Urban 4×4 2014 model series features a new bumper and radiator grille. It may seem to many that the bumpers were simply lying around in a warehouse, and engineers decided to bolt them onto a new version of the car. In fact, these are truly brand new bumpers created only for this model.

On the rear window there is a grandiosely curved wiper, and you should also not ignore the “stylish” door handles. The updated version is 3.7 meters long and one and a half meters wide. The height of the all-wheel drive Lada Urban reaches two meters. Of course, new details and a slightly updated design brought modernity and style to the Niva model.

The interior has not undergone any major changes. It is still a bit cramped, and due to the predominance of gray color and angular shapes of the dashboard, the interior looks very boring and gloomy. But it is worth noting that the car is equipped with air conditioning, as evidenced by the power button. There is also an audio system, light control and a solid floor tunnel lining. You may notice the exterior window control knob, the power window button, and the coin container.

Manufacturers pleased drivers with the presence of rubber mats not only in the car interior, but also in the trunk, as well as high-quality seat upholstery. The driver and front passenger feel very at ease, unlike the rear passengers, who have to be crowded. If necessary, the rear seats can be folded down, in which case the car can fit up to 580 liters of luggage. This is an important factor, since many Niva drivers often go fishing and hunting. Second generation

A long and unfinished epic is the history of the second generation Chevrolet Niva. Back in 2014, the concept of a new model was prepared, and it was successfully tested on the roads of Italy and Sweden. After which the release was scheduled for the winter of 2015. But the plans were disrupted by the financial crisis, shifting the sales deadline to the winter of 2022, and in February 2018 the project was once again suspended.

Today it is known that the changes will affect engine power and external parameters of the car, but will bypass indicators characterizing capacity. The second generation promises potential buyers:

  • body dimensions: length will increase slightly to 4.316 m, width will increase by 30 mm;
  • the fuel tank volume will be 62 liters as opposed to the previous 58;
  • trunk volume in liters – 355 instead of the previous 320.

In the Chevrolet Niva, the trunk volume will only slightly expand. The rear seats can still fold down to improve cargo space. In some trim levels it is planned to use roof rails. It should be noted that the angularity of the new Niva could theoretically affect the usable volume in which luggage can be placed.

Basic car configurations

The factory supplies 3 main modifications of the car. They have indexes 1.7, 1.7i and 1.8. All models have the same appearance, are equipped with a five-speed gearbox, and by the designations you can understand what type of engine is installed on the car.

Niva 2131 1.7 is equipped with a 4-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1.69 liters, which develops a maximum power of 79 horsepower. The engine is carburetor, with cylinders with a diameter of 83 millimeters, which provide a compression ratio of 9.3. For cars, it is recommended to use AI-92 gasoline. This engine allows you to accelerate to 100 kilometers per hour in 25 seconds. The maximum speed is no more than 135 km/h.

The VAZ 2131 1.7i variety is distinguished by the fact that it has an engine with a modified fuel injection system. An injector is installed on it, which ensures uniform enrichment of the fuel mixture and its faster entry into the cylinder. For normal operation, it is recommended to use AI-95 fuel.

Niva 2131 1.8 differs from previous versions in that it is equipped with an engine with a volume increased to 1.77 liters, which allows it to develop the greatest power and speed. The piston stroke increased to 85 millimeters and a large combustion chamber made it possible to reduce the compression ratio to 8.4. The changes made it possible to achieve an increase in power to 82 hp.

At the same time, the maximum torque increased to 139/3200 rpm. But this engine is an aspirated carburetor. The outdated fuel supply system allows the use of AI-92 gasoline. The maximum speed developed by this engine is 137 km/h. The time required to accelerate to hundreds is 22 seconds.

Despite all the differences in the engines, they have the same fuel consumption. In the urban cycle it reaches 12.2 liters per 100 kilometers. This is quite a large figure, so a tank with a volume of 65 liters is installed on the car.

A worthy model among Russian off-road passenger cars is the Chevrolet Niva. However, it does not have a number of disadvantages. For example, there is an established opinion among drivers that the Chevrolet Niva has practically no trunk. Let's figure out whether this is a lie or a real disadvantage of the domestic SUV.

Chevrolet Niva is a small-sized five-door crossover that is suitable for driving in the city and off-road. On the market since 2002, restyling took place only once. It differs from other Chevrolet models assembled in Russia in that 90% of all components are domestically produced. A remarkable fact: in 2009, this model received the award, awarded annually by the best auto magazines, “SUV of the Year 2009” in the “Premiere of the Year” and “SUV” categories.

The operation will take approximately 20 hours to complete. The frame pipes are welded together to form the bottom. When working with aluminum, argon welding is used. In the same way, the sides are welded, which can, if necessary, be made from metal sheets.

It is advisable to lay a reinforcing mesh or small diameter tubes at the bottom, which will serve as stiffeners. Usually three jumpers are enough, but it is better to make five. The exact quantity can be determined already at the assembly stage. The recommended distance between jumpers is 15 centimeters. The remaining tubes are welded longitudinally to further strengthen the structure.

Some drivers complain of rattling noises when traveling with an expedition rack. To avoid this effect, the mesh is welded in all places where it comes into contact with the metal crossbars. The crossbars are located at a large distance from each other. Therefore, it is necessary to weld sections of the profile in the openings between them. You can use bolts instead of welding, but this fastening is less reliable and the operation takes more time.

The arcs must be made from rolled metal with a round cross-section. They improve the aerodynamic properties of the vehicle. To attach the structure to the car, you can take ordinary corners with holes for bolts. They will be welded to the frame from below, so if necessary, you can remove the trunk at any time. To prevent scratches from forming on the roof rails when they come into contact with metal, rubber gaskets should be glued to the fastenings.

The top frame should have right angles at the front. At the back you need to make edges that will be located along the edges. It is necessary to weld 12 profile sections of arbitrary size to the frame. The height of the future trunk depends on their size. Usually they make a height of 190 millimeters. It is necessary to secure six segments in the corners, and the rest will connect them in pairs.

An upper frame is welded on top of the vertically located profile elements. The next step is the installation and welding of the diagonal element. This part is optional, but can be used to install a branch guard when traveling into the woods. If necessary, you can make fastenings for additional elements:

  • Fasteners for spare tire.
  • Additional lighting, spotlights.
  • Hooks on which the cable will be held.
  • Polymer boxes for equipment, such as tents.
  • Various types of attachments for tools, such as shovels.
  • A ladder that simplifies access to things lying on the trunk.

Making fasteners for a spare wheel is easy. To do this, you first need to choose a place where the spare tire will lie. At this point you need to weld the nut. Next, the stud is screwed into this nut, but not welded. Now the wheel can be put on the stud and secured with another nut. If you plan to attach headlights, they will require waterproof wires.

Any additional elements can be added later, after the basket has been installed. It is also not necessary to make the hooks or ladder yourself. Often they buy ready-made parts and attach them to a homemade trunk

But after welding the frame, it is important to sand all the seams and try on the structure to make sure it fits

Equipment and comfort

At first glance, the VAZ Niva 21213 is the Volga analogue of the Ural UAZ 469 model. Yes, in terms of driving performance and cross-country ability they are almost Siamese twins, but inside they are completely different. The front row of seats has headrests, the backrest is adjustable in length and angle, the rear row folds to increase luggage space. Upon request, the Niva was equipped with a rear window washer and cleaner, as well as an electric window heater. By today's standards, the equipment of the Volga SUV is almost ascetic, but in the 70s they did not even dream of such luxurious things.

Let's move inside the Niva car. As you know, this SUV was created on the basis of the classic Zhiguli, so it is not surprising that many parts were borrowed from there. As for the interior, you can see the panel and steering wheel from the VAZ-2107. In terms of noise insulation, the Niva, of course, is far from being a leader. Many owners de-noise the body themselves by disassembling the interior down to the screw.

With the advent of the new Urban model, the situation has changed for the better, but not significantly. The instrument panel is now positioned from the “ten”, the steering wheel has a more convenient shape. The panel has changed slightly, but overall retains its angular features.

The only advantage worth noting is that it has a better level of equipment. "Niva" 5-door has electric windows, as well as electric mirror adjustment. But as owner reviews note, the 5-door Niva, even in its maximum configuration, is not equipped with music. This upsets many buyers. It is also worth noting the very noisy operation of the stove. There is no air conditioning here.

What distinguishes the long-wheelbase Niva from the short one is the rear row. The architecture of the seats here is the same, but the distance to the apron of the seats is an order of magnitude greater. Rear passengers will not feel cramped, unlike the three-door Niva. In this regard, the five-door deserves praise.
