What to do if the Lada airbags deploy

When the airbag light comes on, it clearly indicates that the airbags are not working at the moment. The icon can not only be constantly lit, but also blink, like a check engine, thereby indicating a specific error code in the security system.

Any modern car is equipped with various safety features. Thus, the presence of at least one Airbag became a mandatory attribute of the car. an airbag lamp on the dashboard . In any car you can find the “SRS” marking located somewhere in the front part of the cabin, which is an abbreviation for “Supplementary Restrain System” or as it sounds in Russian, “System Detailed Security”. It consists of a certain number of pillows, as well as elements such as:

  • seat belts;
  • squibs;
  • tensioners;
  • shock sensors;
  • an electronic control system for all this, which is the brain of automobile safety.

The SRS system, like any other complex automotive component, can fail due to the breakdown of a certain part or loss of reliability of the relationship between elements. This is exactly what happened to you if the airbag light came on on your dashboard, the indicator of which varies in different car models.

Recovery procedure

To restore the functionality of this security system, you need to spend a significant amount of money and time. Plus, the procedure requires appropriate qualifications from the master.

The gradual restoration of the airbag includes several procedures:

  • replacing the squib;
  • installation of new sensors;
  • replacement or flashing of the control unit;
  • restoration of the casing.

You probably won’t be able to do all this yourself. It is difficult and time-consuming, plus it requires a certain set of knowledge, skills and specialized equipment.

If you restore it yourself, there is a risk that the airbags will not work.

Therefore, the only correct solution in such a situation is to contact a special service center. Get ready for the fact that you will be asked for 4-5 thousand rubles to install the squib, and the torpedo will be restored at best for 8-10 thousand rubles. You will also need to reflash the control unit, which will cost about 3-4 thousand rubles.

The most difficult thing to restore are the cushions that are built into the seats. When triggered, they are torn apart. Therefore, you have to disassemble the chair and perform a complete reupholstery.

Why does the Airbag indicator light up on the instrument panel?

If the airbag light comes on, this means that there is a failure somewhere, and the problem may affect not only the airbags themselves, but also any other element of the on-board safety system.

If there are no breakdowns, when you turn on the ignition, the airbag lamp lights up and flashes six times. If everything is normal with the system and it is working properly, the indicator will go out on its own after that until the next start of the engine. If there are problems, it stays on. The system begins self-diagnosis, detects a fault code and stores it in memory.

After the first testing, after a short period of time the system tests its elements again. If the breakdown was determined incorrectly or the signs of the malfunction disappeared, the diagnostic module erases the previously recorded error code, the lamp goes out and the machine operates in normal mode. The exception is cases where critical breakdowns are detected - the system stores their codes in long-term memory and does not erase them.

Troubleshooting

When srs is on, a strictly verified sequence of actions is needed:

  1. At first, the system works on its own - it checks its functionality when the ignition is turned on, and if an error is detected, it records its code;
  2. then the mechanic comes in - he reads the code and determines the cause of the breakdown;
  3. the system is checked with specialized diagnostic equipment;
  4. repair operations are carried out;
  5. The control unit memory is updated.

All operations must be performed only with the battery completely disconnected!

Possible faults

If you have SRS light on your dashboard, there is definitely a problem. Modern automakers take a very responsible approach to organizing the safety of the driver and passengers, so the devices responsible for this are considered the most reliable and trouble-free elements of almost any car. That is, if the airbag is on, you should not think about a possible problem with the safety management, but start looking for the problem, since it is present with the highest degree of probability.

If your airbag light comes on, it may indicate one of the following problems:

  1. violation of the integrity of any element of the system;
  2. termination of signal exchange between system elements;
  3. problems with door contacts, which most often occur after they are repaired or replaced; It’s enough to just forget to connect one connector, and your srs is constantly on;
  4. mechanical damage to the shock sensor;
  5. short circuit or damage to the wiring between any parts of the security system;
  6. faulty fuses, problems with the passage of signals at connections;
  7. mechanical or software damage to the security system control unit;
  8. violation of the integrity of the system as a result of installation of alarm elements;
  9. careless replacement of seats is also the reason why the airbag lamp is on, since the wires and connections passing there have been damaged;
  10. restoration of airbags after they are deployed without resetting the memory of the control electronic unit;
  11. exceeding the resistance value on one of the pillows;
  12. critically low voltage in the on-board electrical network; if your airbag is on fire for this very reason, simply replace the battery;
  13. exceeding the operational period for airbags or squibs, most often up to ten years;
  14. tuning performed by amateurs, which can lead to damage to the integrity of wiring or sensors;
  15. sensors getting wet due to car washing;
  16. incorrectly performed battery replacement.

How to check a car before buying

You can check the car's history before purchasing using online services. For example, through the all-Russian Internet service “Autocode”. Here you can get information in 5 minutes about whether the vehicle you are interested in was involved in an accident or not. If the car has been in a serious accident, it means that the safety devices have already been activated. But they replaced them with new ones or installed a dummy - it’s up to the potential buyer to check.

To become the owner of information about road accidents in which the car was involved, enter the VIN or state registration number. vehicle number in the search form on the main page of the Autocode website. Within five minutes you will receive information about the type and date of the traffic accident. In addition, the diagram will indicate the location of the most significant damage to the body.

In addition, a detailed report contains information about the former owners of the car, the history of registration actions, the actual mileage of the car, the dates of technical inspections, information about the presence of traffic police restrictions and other useful information about the vehicle.

To be completely sure of the desired swallow, you should inspect it for any technical problems. However, if you do not have enough experience, or you are in another city, an auto expert will do it for you! To do this, just leave a request for an on-site inspection service on the Autocode website.

Purpose and operating principle of SNPB

The airbag system is an additional means of protecting the driver wearing a seat belt and is designed to reduce the severity of his injury during frontal (±30 degrees) vehicle collisions in traffic accidents. SNAP is triggered depending on the force of the vehicle’s collision with various obstacles. In case of normal activation in an emergency situation, the SNAP is launched regardless of the state of the driver's seat belt fastening. Therefore, the use of a seat belt by the driver is a prerequisite for the effective operation of the air safety system.

The airbag system begins to function after the ignition is turned on and is controlled by an electronic unit (BUSNPB) with a self-diagnosis function. The system is activated by submitting an electrical signal from the BUSNPB to the airbag module.

If the airbag is activated, the upper part of the cover of the facing module of the airbag, when the airbag is filled with gas, breaks in structurally defined places and opens into two or three parts. Through the resulting opening, the gas-filled airbag bag deploys in front of the steering wheel or instrument panel. The filling time of the pillow is about 30-40 ms. After the airbag inflates due to excess pressure, the gas escapes through special holes located in the rear of the airbag bag, thereby preventing the driver or passenger from colliding with parts of the vehicle's interior and at the same time softening the severity of the impact of their head and chest.

SNPB device

The LADA 2190 car in the “Norma” configuration is equipped with a single-channel SNPB, which includes:

  • gas generator module (MNPBV) (part 21910-8232010-00);
  • airbag system control unit (part 21900-3824010-00);
  • connector with rotating device (part 21700-3709315-00);
  • steering wheel (part 21910-3402018-00).

Airbag system:

  1. driver airbag module;
  2. installation location of the SNPB control unit.

The gas generator module (MNPBV) consists of a gas generator 1, a housing 7 with an inflatable cushion folded in it, a facing cover 9, a sound signal switch and fasteners.

Gas generator module (rear view):

  1. gas generator;
  2. hooks for fixing MNPBB;
  3. horn switch contacts;
  4. hooks for fixing MNPBB;
  5. location of the identification label;
  6. gas generator igniter connector;
  7. a body with an inflatable cushion folded in it;
  8. hooks for positioning MNPBV;
  9. facing cover.

The gas generator produces gas inside the module to inflate the airbag. The pyrotechnic substance located in the gas generator is ignited by a fuse-igniter mounted in the gas generator housing. There are two main types of gas generators. A pyrotechnic gas generator consists of a housing filled with a solid pyrotechnic substance and an igniter. In it, gas is produced when a pyrotechnic substance is burned. Used in the driver airbag module. A hybrid gas generator consists of a housing filled with compressed inert gas and a pyrotechnic substance, and an igniter. Used in the passenger airbag module. An igniter is a device with electrical resistance and a pyrotechnic substance. After receiving an electrical signal from the BUSNPB, the electrical resistance heats up and ignites the pyrotechnic substance of the igniter, followed by ignition of the bulk of the pyrotechnic substance of the gas generator.

An airbag is a bag made of synthetic material, built into the module body, which is filled with gas under pressure when the module is activated. The airbag is folded in a special way and closed with a facing cover.

Steering column

Safety cushion (Airbag) Lada Kalina

Lada Kalina has a front airbag

driver (Airbeg) and in an embodiment. front passenger airbag and front seat belts with drawstring and load limiter.

When the airbag deploys, the front seat belts are tightened for a few milliseconds (to securely secure the driver and front passenger), and the airbags are filled with a special gas that opens and reduces the risk of injury to the upper body and head.

Aviation copes with frontal impacts.

Composition of the airbag accounting system:

  • an airbag module, which is installed in the control column;
  • airbag module for front passenger safety, located on the instrument panel above the glove compartment;
  • seat belts with pre-tensioner and load limiter;
  • a rotating device mounted on the steering column switch connector for connecting the horn switch and the airbag module to the on-board vehicle;
  • Airbeg control and diagnostic unit, located in the floor tunnel of the housing under the device panel console;
  • Airbag warning device on the device panel.

Kalina 2

I saw how a young man in the potassium water group was contacting how to remove

a mat with torpedoes, unfamiliar to the passenger.

Air power is making a big push forward. But you install airbags in some other situations:

  • collision with a stationary converted obstacle at low speed (hitting the curb, edge of the sidewalk.);
  • collision with a moving deformed obstacle at high speed (head-on collision with another car);
  • which is expected to create quite a strong impact on the car in front (in other words, dropping the truck onto the deepest potholes, landing hard on yet another car drop off the ledge).

Airbeg does not work if:

  • turning off the ignition;
  • there was a minor head-on collision;
  • automatic rollover is disabled;
  • was the side of the car or the back.

MAIN!

The Airbeg only provides the best protection if the seat, backrest and headrest are positioned correctly, in which case the driver's (passenger's) entire back rests on the backrest and the seatback is pressed down so that the upright driver's seat bends slightly. Hands at elbows. you could hold the steering wheel.

Incorrect seating position when opening the airbag may result in injury due to other death as the airbag requires some space when filling with gas.

Airbeg is a separate, disposable device and does not even require maintenance while the vehicle is in use. After airbag

control module and airbags, belts with tensioners were replaced with special service stations.

Inflatable chamber pillow

The seat belt does not replace the seat belt, but only complements it, working with it in pairs. With seat belts removed during airbag deployment, the risk of serious injury at the other fatal end is high.

Never place any objects on the control wheel on the panel of another device as they may cause serious injury if the airbags deploy.

While driving a car, it is strictly forbidden to attach your forearm (palm) to the place where the airbag is installed. In addition, the front seat passenger should not stand on the panel of the device while driving.

Airbag control structure

Modern airbag control systems are structurally simple and consist of the following elements:

  1. ECU (electronic control unit). Its main element is a three-dimensional accelerometer, which calculates the deceleration of the car when impacted on different axes. It must be borne in mind that the command for airbag squibs is issued only during sharp deceleration in a moving car, so complaints about allegedly faulty airbags that do not work at low speed are actually groundless. The control unit also reads information from a number of additional sensors described below.
  1. Shock sensors are an element of outdated Airbag systems that did not have an accelerometer built into the ECU. Such sensors were attached either in the bumper area, and responded to critical deformation, or in the front part of the cabin, and gave a signal about a sharp deceleration. They only made it possible to determine the fact of an impact in the direction where they were located, which is why they are not applicable on modern cars with many airbags that are triggered depending on the direction of the impact.
  2. Airbags. They consist of an elastic shell that is filled with gas when the squib is detonated by an electrical signal. The only airbag malfunction that the ECU can track is a significant change in the resistance of the squib ignition circuit relative to the specified one, that is, a short circuit or break. If the reason for the airbag warning light to come on is a detected open circuit, you can turn it off on a number of vehicles by removing this airbag or another element from the system configuration menu using a diagnostic scanner.

  3. Auxiliary actuators . The most common are seat belt pretensioners. They are squibs that, before the airbag deploys, press the person to the back of the seat. In this case, the pretensioner will work only in one case - if the seat belt is extended to a sufficient length (determined by the sensor located on the belt reel) and is latched into the buckle. A malfunction of any of these sensors will not only cause the warning light to come on, but also block the corresponding pretensioner.
  4. Additional sensors. These include seat belt sensors, the front passenger's front airbag switch, and so on. Their malfunction also leads to the registration of a corresponding error and the turning on of a warning lamp on the instrument panel.
  5. Wiring and connectors. The most common problems associated with them are mechanical damage. The most common malfunction of safety systems lies in a break in the connecting cable of the driver's airbag.

Tidy reset

To perform the procedure, you should scroll the shield regulator until the dial is reset to zero. If you need to perform a full reset of the panel, you need to disconnect power from the battery for 15 minutes and reconnect the wires.

The Grants panel is quite advanced and easy to understand for the driver. The indicators are intuitive, making it easier for novice drivers to learn.

Diagnostics

The reason why the airbag light is on can only be determined using a diagnostic scanner. In this case, it is not necessary to use an expensive dealer-grade device - its only advantage will be the presence in the software of a guided diagnostic procedure, that is, a step-by-step algorithm for finding the causes of a specific malfunction on a given car. More affordable tools, as a rule, are only able to read and display a list of recorded faults, but this is enough to diagnose the airbag control system.

This figure shows errors read from the vehicle. Obviously, not only was he in a serious accident (breaks in the circuits of the seat belt pretensioners and the driver's airbag mean that they are highly likely to be deployed), but they also tried to hide it - the last detected fault was the circuit of the airbag warning lamp itself.

"Renault Logan"

The owner of this car has a more significant problem. It all started when the SRS indicator came on one day. Since the driver had some experience in this matter, he decided to figure it out on his own. Having removed the front driver's airbag, the man disconnected the wires from it (having previously disconnected the ground), removed the steering wheel and the plastic cover. By the way, he had to remove the steering wheel with a friend, since it was tightly pressed in. This happens not only on Renault Logan cars. The airbag light came on, as it turned out, after removing the cover, due to the fact that the airbag cable was torn off, on both sides. Having removed the steering column switch block, the man took out the damaged element and replaced it.

Damage to the flexible cable

The most unreliable component of the entire airbag control system is the cable connecting the steering wheel to the electrical wiring. It is a flexible tape along which conductive paths run. This tape is twisted inside the housing of the steering column switches and when the steering wheel is rotated in one direction, it twists, and in the other, it unwinds. The greatest deformation occurs at its ends, with bending entering the plastic guides. In this case, either several tracks or the entire tape can break. The main feature of this malfunction is that at the same time, some buttons on the steering wheel (horn, cruise control, etc.) often stop working. You may also hear a noise when you turn the steering wheel quickly.

The only reasonable way to repair the problem can only be to replace the base of the steering column switches assembled with the cable.

Many inexpensive car repair shops offer soldering services for broken cables. You should only resort to it if you are confident in the qualifications of the specialist who will work with your car. Poor soldering and rough assembly of the cable coil will lead to very rapid repeated failure.

Damage to wiring and connectors

If the airbag light is on on the dashboard, and the diagnostics show an open or short circuit in the ignition circuit of a particular airbag, sensor or switch, there is most likely mechanical damage to the wiring or connector. Most often, as mentioned earlier, this happens due to the fault of people who disassembled something in the car before.

  • When removing the driver's airbag, for example before removing the steering wheel, it is easy to damage its fragile connector. Subsequently, this will reveal itself as a fixed open circuit when the steering column cable is in working order;
  • when removing the plastic panels before soundproofing the interior, the wiring of the pretensioners and seat belt position sensors may be damaged, and the connectors may not be fully latched during reassembly;
  • If the car is equipped with a longitudinal position sensor, the wiring coming from it may become bent over time. In this case, in some seating positions, the warning light on the instrument panel may go out;
  • in the same way, the wiring from the presence sensor, which is triggered by a load on the seat cushion, can be damaged. In addition, he himself can be damaged by an excessively massive passenger;
  • The warning light also lights up if there is a fault in the connection between the airbag control unit and other vehicle systems. This is especially true for cars where they are deeply integrated into the operation of the digital CAN bus; for example, the inability to read information about the vehicle speed from the ABS controller is considered an error, although the airbag control system itself is absolutely working.

"Nissan Note"

After cleaning the car, the owner noticed that the SRS indicator was on. Apparently, the reason is that the man touched the joint located under the seat with a vacuum cleaner. At first I tried to simply remove the battery terminal. On some cars, it helps if the airbag light comes on. Nissan is designed in such a way that error information is stored immediately. Fortunately, this is not the only feature of Nissan vehicles. It turns out that in cars of this brand, in order to clear the system of errors, you need to perform the following sequence of actions:

  1. Press the brake pedal. He should not be released until the procedure is completed.
  2. Turn the key to “ON” mode.
  3. Wait until the SRS indicator starts flashing.
  4. Quickly turn the key to the "OFF" position.
  5. Elements from the second to the fourth must be repeated 3-5 times.

If it doesn’t help, then the problem is more serious and you need to contact the experts.

Airbag squib malfunction

A break in the ignition winding of the squib itself is extremely rare. If this is detected, the airbag must be replaced, since repairing the squib is impossible. Often, instead, a so-called “fake” is installed in the airbag connector - a resistor with a resistance equal to the impedance of the standard ignition circuit of the squib. One can argue for a long time whether such savings on one’s own safety are advisable, but, nevertheless, such a service is in stable demand.
