The Lada Vesta car is equipped with standard airbags, some cars have side airbags. Depends on the configuration. If something is wrong with the system, the airbag icon lights up on the panel. In the Lada Vesta BC system, all errors have a number. If you look through the OBD connector on the computer, then the airbags on the Lada Vesta have the code: 1094-14. The passive safety system for the driver and passengers of the car is constantly evolving. Once upon a time, even belts were not mandatory; they began to be installed in the second half of the last century. The average speed on the road and traffic intensity have increased, which means it’s time to think about more serious human protection.
Not so long ago, the pillows that appeared on Lada were met with optimism. The Vesta airbag has become a necessity - the new flagship meets all the standards of a modern car. However, an incident occurs when an airbag error appears on the dashboard.
When the indicator is on, do not panic. But you shouldn’t continue driving after the airbag has “caught fire” - anything can happen on the road. Risking your life when your pillow is on fire is not a good idea. The only solution when the airbag indicator lights up on a Lada Vesta is to go have the system repaired.
How many airbags are there in Vesta?
Seat belts have been used in cars since the middle of the last century. Pillows are a relatively new product, but modern cars are no longer produced without them. In tandem, two devices save 75% of those involved in road accidents from injury.

How many airbags are available on the Vesta depends on the modification:
- Classic and Comfort - 2 pieces each: driver and front passenger (airbag with switch-off function).
- Luxs and Exclusive - 4 pieces each: also a driver, a front passenger (airbag with shutdown), plus 2 side ones.
In a head-on collision, the car stops, and the crew “flies” forward by inertia. The airbags open, inflate, and absorb the impact energy in a split second. People do not collide with the steering wheel, windshield, pillars, or instrument panel and, as a result, receive fewer injuries.
What to do after triggering
If we immediately talk about the question of whether it is possible to restore deployed airbags in the event of an accident, this can be done realistically. And even necessary. Only here we are talking about restoring the system itself. It is impossible to revive airbags that have already fired. This is a purely one-time thing.
New safety requirements force car manufacturers to install at least 2 airbags as standard.
They can go off in a collision with other cars, in the event of hitting some obstacles, or when heavy objects fall on the car. That is, the conditions for triggering a special sensor are created, and the airbag is triggered.
At the moment of impact, a special fabric with special impregnation breaks out from the steering wheel and front panel, which is filled with air. All this happens in a split second in order to prevent a person from hitting the steering wheel or dashboard.
But you can’t drive any further with blown airbags. To begin with, the sheathing was torn and needed to be repaired. But we also need to resolve the issue of the future fate of the pillows.
There are several options here:
- perform the recovery procedure;
- install new pillows;
- install cushions from used cars purchased at car dismantling yards;
- apply a dummy.
Many used cars have a dummy installed under the guise of an active airbag. There is a high risk that the airbags will not deploy in an accident. Don't fall for this trick.
Therefore, one of the most important components of checking any car purchased on the secondary market is studying the accident history and checking the airbags.
What kind of airbags are there in Vesta?
There are no curtains, knee or rear side airbags in the Lada Vesta.
The machine is equipped with:
- Frontal devices - in case of frontal collisions, they absorb up to 90% of the momentum due to inertia. The devices protect the head and neck of people riding in the front seats.
- Lateral - protect the entire human body from injury.
When deployed, the airbags release gas to allow the crew to escape from the vehicle. The devices are disposable: they help only in the first collision, and are useless in subsequent impacts that occur in an accident.
What is an "airbag"
The airbag design is quite simple. Conventionally, the product can be divided into three components: a bag, shock sensors and a gas generator (inflating system).
Bag
It is a thin, multilayer nylon shell (no more than 0.4 mm thick) capable of withstanding large short-term loads. The bag is located in a special tire, which is covered with a special lining made of fabric or plastic.
Shock sensors
These components are typically located at the front of the machine. They are responsible for the timely deployment of the car's airbag, that is, it is these sensors that activate it immediately after a collision with an object at a speed of more than 20 km/h. However, the force of the impact is also taken into account, so the airbag can work even in a stationary car if the collision was strong enough.
Sensors are installed in two types:
- Impact (records the impact that falls on the body).
- Passenger seat sensors (thanks to them, it is possible to exclude the system from triggering if there is no one else in the car besides the driver).
In addition to sensors, accelerometers are also often additionally installed in the system (they help determine the position of the car).
Gas generator
Initially, these elements were equipped with only one squib, which made it very difficult to regulate the gas supply to the airbag based on the size and position of the person sitting in the car. However, modern airbags have 2 squibs. The first (main) releases 80% of the gas (the so-called soft landing), the second is activated only if the collision was too strong and the person needs a harder cushion.
All 3 components of the airbag must be in good working order, only in this case can it be guaranteed that the protective elements will work flawlessly.
Where is the side airbag located on the West?
For the first time, AvtoVAZ equipped Vesta with such a passive safety element. however, not every driver will show where the side airbag is located in the car.
The location of the location is indicated by AIRBAG labels. Fabric inflatable bags are located in the side parts of the seats: on the driver’s left hand, on the front passenger’s right.
Where are the front airbags located? Photo source: https://lada-vesta.info/226-podushki-bezopasnosti-v-avtomobilyah-lada-vesta.html
Owners of the “Lux” and “Exclusive” modifications (where side air guards are installed) must observe the following precautions:
- do not use covers for the front row of seats or wear only special products;
- do not clutter the space between the sides of the seats and the door trim;
- do not hang canes, umbrellas, or other objects on the handrails;
- Do not hold children or pets.
The driver must protect the car from accidental impacts on the central pillar while the engine is running. If the device “fires,” it cannot be repaired: you will have to change the control unit, inflatable bags, and belts along with the pretensioning module.
How does the airbag work?
The operating principle of airbags can be divided into several stages:
- Collision of a vehicle with another object.
- Automatic activation of electronic sensors that trigger the following mechanism.
- The system receives a signal from the electronic control unit and the detonator (charge from sodium acid tablets) is activated, as a result of which the gas (argon or ozone) heats up and bursts out under high pressure (up to 250 mPa). However, before this, it passes through a special metal filter and cools.
- The pillow suddenly fills up and opens 30 milliseconds after the triggered sensors send a signal.
- The driver or passenger of the car hits his head on the airbag, which significantly dampens the energy of the resulting impact. This results in only 10% of the residual impact per person.
- The pillow “falls off.”
When talking about how airbags work, it is worth considering the design features of the car, since some cars have only 2 “airbags,” while in others, emergency elements are installed in almost every plane.
Why does the airbag icon light up on the Lada Vesta?
The dashboard contains indicators that inform the car owner about the current state of the car’s components and assemblies. If at least one warning sign lights up, you cannot drive until the cause of the signal is identified and eliminated.
Features of the airbag indicator
The airbags on the Vesta panel are indicated by the inscription “Airbag”, which lights up when the ignition key is turned.
If the system is in order, the on-board computer diagnoses the operation of squibs, impact sensors, and seat belt tensioners. The indicator flashes 6 times at this time. When the self-test is completed, the signal goes off.

When the airbag on the West lights up abnormally, the owners find out why this happened before they start driving.
Breaks in wiring and damaged terminals
Often the culprit is broken wires, poorly connected or oxidized battery terminals.
Other reasons:
- they removed the seats and damaged the wiring;
- repaired the steering column with the airbag disconnected, then the connectors were not connected tightly enough;
- the instrument panel was dismantled, the wires were damaged, or the shock sensor connections were not fully latched.
A short circuit in the circuit will be another reason for the passive safety indicator to be constantly on.
Damage to shock sensors
The operation of the PB is tied to the seat belt, as well as to shock sensors. When at least one of these electromechanical controllers fails on the Lada Vesta, the airbag icon is constantly on.
Compact sensors are located inside the machine, in places close to the control panel. The controllers recognize a collision and transmit impulses to the control device. When strong frontal or lateral acceleration (impact) occurs, the sensor closes the contacts and current begins to flow through them. As a result, the actuator (squib) is activated and the fabric bag is filled with gas.
A weak blow does not activate the process. If the connection to the battery is lost during an accident, the airbag will still inflate: the system has a capacitor device that retains the charge for some time.
Shock sensors cannot be repaired. To diagnose their operation, drivers use special scanners. If a breakdown is detected, you must buy a new part: article number of the original spare part 21700382405000, price 1426 rubles.
Other components of the airbag system:
- SRS control unit - article number 217003824010112, price from 1500 to 5000 rubles.
- PB switch - 21703709315, costs 2275 rubles.
- Seat belt sensors - catalog number I482, price from 1400 rubles.
- Passenger presence sensor - A2518706210, costs from 2500 rubles.

When the airbags have worked properly and as intended, the SRS (passive safety system) unit does not have to be completely changed: it can be reflashed.
Other breakdowns and failures
Problems with the sensing device can be mechanical, electronic or electrical.
Why does the airbag icon light up on the Lada Vesta:
- the battery is discharged;
- the seal of the bag is broken;
- the electronic unit was not reset after the safety switch was triggered;
- The ECU program has gone wrong;
- the service life of the pyrotechnic cartridge has expired;
- one of the contacts has oxidized or one of the wires has broken;
- A faulty diode in the Era-Glonass lamp in hot weather gives an error in the form of a burning pillow. When the temperature drops, the light goes out. Over time, the signal does not disappear even in the cold.
If the airbag icon on your Lada Vesta lights up and stays lit, you need to analyze all the work that was carried out on the car: repairs, replacement of spare parts. It is worth checking fuses F21 (15A) in the mounting block. Sometimes simply washing the interior will cause the passive safety system to malfunction if water gets into the belt sensors.
Is it possible to restore it with your own hands?
Many car owners, realizing what expenses they will have to pay when contacting a car service center, decide to do everything themselves. To begin with, it is worth eliminating the option of using a dummy.
Even if you restore everything yourself, you will also have to spend a considerable amount of money on consumables. The restoration kit includes:
- new pillows in the required quantity;
- seat belts and squibs;
- shock sensors.
Such components are purchased in specialized stores, or are found at car dismantling yards. In the latter option, it is important that the donor car is not involved in an accident and the airbags do not deploy on it. But finding such a donor is not so easy.
You can physically replace all the components yourself. Problems arise precisely at the stage of setting up or flashing the control unit. It is strongly recommended to entrust this work to specialized specialists. Moreover, it is better to contact the official dealer of your car brand. There are a number of dubious workshops that do not guarantee the quality of the work performed. They are attracted only by the low cost of services. It is better to refuse them.
If an accident does happen and the airbag works, but you plan to continue using the car, get ready for a full restoration of the airbags.
Removing and installing airbags
A disposable fabric ball is replaced with a new element after a collision. The ECU then stores an error in its memory. If the unit fails to reflash, then buy and install another component.
Passenger
The location of the device is the car frame, behind the dashboard.
The replacement goes like this:
- They turn off the power to the car.
- Remove the steering wheel cover and cushion, even if it is in good condition.
- The steering wheel is removed.
- Unscrew the bolts above the pedals and get to the center console.
- Unclip the console clips with a screwdriver and remove the radio.
- Remove the dashboard panel.
- Disconnect the wiring and remove the pillow.
- Install a new bag.
Then everything is assembled in reverse order.
Lateral
Work with the pyrotechnic module is carried out by trained personnel. Procedure:
- Disconnect the battery.
- Remove the front seat.
- Dismantle the headrest and its guide bushings.
- Remove the outer casing and inner panel of the front seat.
- Remove the back panel and upholstery.
- Remove the airbag.
- Install a new bag.
Next, install the upholstery, back panel and other parts removed earlier.
You can check the correct operation only in an emergency situation, in the next accident. Therefore, the average driver should not take risks and change the fuel seal on his own.
Steering wheel cushion
The basic steps for removing the driver's airbag in the steering wheel are the same for all Lada Vesta cars:
- First, disconnect the battery.
- Next, unscrew the screws and release the pillow.
- Disconnect the wire clamps and the block.

Now you can remove the airbag from the Vesta steering wheel and install another one. To do this, continue working in reverse order.
Sometimes after an accident, drivers do not want to install a new passive safety device due to the high price (12-20 thousand rubles) or other reasons. To deceive the ECU, they resort to a dummy. A time relay is connected to the fake steering wheel cover, which de-energizes the light bulb 5-7 seconds after the engine starts. The snag costs from 2,500 rubles.
Working principle of Airbag
The effectiveness of airbags is ensured by rapid deployment. Thanks to this, hard contact between a person and the steering wheel or other interior trim of the car is eliminated.
Subtleties of the device:
- As a result of a collision and a strong negative acceleration, a force is generated that is recorded by the sensor.
- The sensors are programmed for specific situations. In case of contact with a hard obstacle, the system can operate at a speed of 30 km per hour. If the obstacle is deformable, like another vehicle, the required speed increases to 50 km per hour.
- When the impact force exceeds the programmed value, the sensor closes and the corresponding signal is transmitted to the control unit.
- A signal is given to open the system.
The whole process takes a split second, which ensures the desired result. Airbags are made in the form of durable fabric pillows. Their opening occurs thanks to built-in squibs. As soon as the pillow comes into contact with the human body, a rupture occurs and it deflates.
Therefore, the question arises: the airbags deployed, what should I do? In addition to the need to contact a service center, you need to take into account that many cars will not start due to the injectors being turned off. This is done for safety and to prevent fire.
If there is no unlock button, the help of service technicians is needed to restore the fuel supply.

Dummy
As a substitute for the shot after an accident (Road accident (car accident, car accident) - an event that occurred during the movement of a vehicle on the road and with its participation, in which people were killed or injured, vehicles, structures, cargo were damaged, or other damage was caused material damage)
or if the module is incorrectly replaced, you can put a stub. You can find a dummy for Lada Vesta on public sale at a cost of about 1,200 – 1,500 rubles. It is installed in the same way as a regular module. Remember that the factory does not recommend compromising your safety and installing a dummy, and besides, the products are not official. Its installation will be your responsibility.

Breaks in wiring and damaged terminals
One of the more common circumstances for problems to occur may be a break in electronic wires.
This problem often arises after such interventions in the car system:
- removing seats with mechanical damage to the wiring;
- disassembly and reassembly of the control column, which was accompanied by incorrect disconnection of the pad connector and incomplete reverse connection;
- dismantling the front panel of the car, because during installation the connectors are not fully latched, the wires coming from the sensors are damaged.
In addition, for various reasons, a short circuit in the wiring may occur, which will be the reason for the indicator to turn on. You can find the problem area only by using a diagnostic scanner.
Other breakdowns and failures
During the use of the vehicle, a huge number of problems of a mechanical or electronic nature can arise, which specifically affect the inclusion of the airbag indicator.
Among them are the following obstacles:
- discharged battery;
- violation of airbag density;
- loaded memory of the electrical unit, which was not reset after the previous activation of the pad and installation of the new one;
- mechanical damage, software failure of the electrical control unit;
- malfunction of the pyrotechnic cartridge due to excessive service life.
When the airbag warning light appears, you must first check the battery. It is important to carefully remember all the work that has been carried out on the car over the past few years. Repairs, replacement of parts, interior parts, washing can be the direct culprits of the problem. If the cause of this phenomenon cannot be identified, then it is necessary to use a special diagnostic scanner.
