Purpose
The coolant temperature sensor (CTS) is used to monitor the antifreeze temperature; the sensor also participates in the formation of the fuel mixture and automatically turns on the engine cooling fan when critical temperature values are reached.
The sensor operates on the principle of a thermistor, that is, with a change in liquid temperature, it changes its resistance and transmits these readings to the engine control unit, which, after receiving the readings, regulates the fuel mixture, and also, if necessary, turns on the engine cooling fan.
Many may notice the sensor working when starting the engine in the cold season; when the engine starts, you can see increased idle speed on the tachometer, which begins to fall as the engine warms up. This is the obvious work of the temperature sensor, which begins to change its resistance as the cooling liquid warms up.
Design and principle of operation of the G65 sensor
What is this simple device? Let's get to know him better.
You need to know this: How to remove rust and how to remove bugs from a car body yourself
Like any other sensor of this kind, the G65 implements the principle of converting mechanical energy into an electrical signal. This micromechanical device is designed with a membrane. It is one of the key operating elements of the sensor.
The degree of deflection of the membrane, depending on the pressure exerted on it, is taken into account when generating the output pulse sent to the central control unit. The control unit reads and analyzes the incoming pulse in accordance with the specified characteristics, and makes changes to the operation of the system components via an electrical signal. The presented system components, in this case, include the electric coupling of the air conditioner and the electric fan.
It is also worth noting that modern DVDs often use a silicon crystal instead of a membrane. Silicon, due to its electrochemical properties, has one interesting feature: under pressure, this mineral is capable of changing electrical resistance. Acting on the principle of a rheostat, this crystal built into the sensor board allows you to send the necessary signal to the recording device of the control unit.
Let's consider the situation when the DVD is triggered, provided that all components of the presented system are operational and operating in normal mode.
As already specified above, this sensor is located in the high pressure circuit of the system. If we give an analogy with any closed system of this kind, we can say that it is mounted on the “supply” of refrigerant. The latter is pumped into the high-pressure circuit and, passing through a narrow line, is gradually compressed. Freon pressure is increasing.
In this case, the laws of thermodynamics begin to manifest themselves. Due to the high density of the refrigerant, its temperature begins to rise. To get rid of this phenomenon, a condenser is installed that looks similar to a cooling radiator. Under certain operating modes of the system, it is forcibly blown by an electric fan.
Symptoms of a problem
When the temperature sensor fails on a Lada Vesta, the following signs of its failure appear:
- There are no warm-up speeds and the engine may spontaneously stall after a cold start;
- The engine starts and immediately stalls when hot;
- You need to press the gas pedal to start the engine hot or cold;
- The engine cooling fan does not turn on;
- The coolant temperature scale on the dashboard does not work;
- Increased fuel consumption;
- Loss of engine power.
If your car shows similar signs of a malfunction, it is recommended to check or replace the sensor, since its cost is low.
Equipment for refilling car air conditioners
Today, the market offers several popular equipment options for refilling car air conditioners:
- Device for refilling car air conditioners (automatic station).
- Professional kits for manual filling.
- Amateur sets.
Automatic stations are the most convenient tool. This installation allows you to refuel air conditioners without human intervention, but costs up to 150 thousand rubles. In order to charge your air conditioner using a DIY kit, you will need at least a basic level of experience in servicing such equipment.
The repair kit includes:
- Refrigerant manifold.
- Scales for measuring the filling volume.
- Refrigerant cylinder.
- Vacuum pump.
- Adapter (adapter) from r 12 to r 134a.
Examination
The test can be done using a multimeter, thermometer and boiling water. To check, you need to dismantle the sensor, set the device to measure resistance, and connect the probes of the device to the sensor, then lower the sensor together with a thermometer into hot water and measure the resistance in it. The obtained data must be compared with the table and a conclusion about the state of the sensor must be drawn.
Reconciliation table
Air conditioning on the West - NORMAL REFUELING!
Many people argue that the air conditioner on VESTA (all models except sports) should be filled with 390/475 grams of freon. So that there are no disputes, just compare these 2 schemes!
XRAY'S TRACK LENGTH IS LONGER! - that’s why it has 475! and Vesta has 390!
Don’t forget - when filling, 20 grams remains in the hose!, so the filling rate for Vesta is 410 grams!
and if your temperature is weak, then the reason is that there is a lot of dust packed BETWEEN the radiators, which is not visible from the outside! — cleaning and everything will be cool!
and the service book says ERROR!
Replacement
To replace the sensor, it is necessary to drain the antifreeze, but there are ways that allow you to replace the sensor without draining the coolant. Let's consider the option of replacing the DTOZH without draining the coolant, since it is the least labor-intensive and the fastest.
Would need:
- Antifreeze 1 liter;
- Set of tools;
Replacement process
Attention! Work must be carried out on a cool engine to avoid burns.
- Relieve the pressure in the engine cooling system by unscrewing the expansion tank cap;
- Remove the air filter box;
- Remove the connector from the sensor;
- We unscrew the sensor and plug the hole with a finger so that the coolant does not leak out;
- We install the new sensor quickly so that coolant leakage occurs as little as possible;
- Add coolant to the level and assemble everything in the reverse order, not forgetting to tighten the expansion tank cap.

System diagnostics
After you calculate how much freon is required to fill the split system and fill the required amount, it is advisable to check the device for leaks and check the operation of the compressor.
As mentioned above, it is not advisable to go overboard with the amount of freon. If the amount of refrigerant exceeds the norm by 10%, this will not, of course, lead to wear on the compressor, but will cause malfunctions in its operation.
If you notice that the compressor is not working efficiently, you can try to top up with about 10% freon, while the system itself should work properly. If its performance does not improve after refueling, then most likely the problem is not a lack of refrigerant. Perhaps there was some kind of damage inside.
If you decide to charge the system yourself, pay attention to the type of refrigerant used in it. Currently, devices use completely safe gas, which not only eliminates the possibility of an explosion, but also does not harm the environment when released into the atmosphere.
The first models of air conditioners used R-22 freon. But it was found that it destroys the ozone layer of the earth and does not work effectively at low temperatures, so manufacturers abandoned its use and switched to more modern and completely safe refrigerants.
Thus, you can calculate the required amount of freon, refill the system and buy the necessary refrigerant entirely on your own.

Topic: Diagnostics of Lada Vesta air conditioner
It's time to implement not only measuring the temperature of the external and cabin air, but also monitoring the actual freon pressure in the air conditioning system. A diagnostician's dream: - display cooling capacity parameters on OBD-II (instrument panel).

Re: Diagnostics of Lada Vesta air conditioner
There is no need to connect pressure-vacuum meters and it is possible not only at the gas station to control the amount of freon and, accordingly, the maximum cooling capacity. + Climate control can be made more efficient.

Re: Diagnostics of Lada Vesta air conditioner
If you display it on the obd, it’s normal, but such a sensor on the dashboard is absolutely not needed. But again, these are extra costs, and the manufacturer is unlikely to pay them.

Re: Diagnostics of Lada Vesta air conditioner
If it is on OBD (and this is currently the case), then displaying it on the dashboard when in demand is the cost of a college student.

Re: Diagnostics of Lada Vesta air conditioner
Some are forced to work cheaply and 24 hours a day. Considering that many services engage in unsubscribes or obvious lack of professionalism, unfortunately or fortunately, some do this themselves or under their control. I believe that manufacturers should make life easier and better for drivers and those who service these cars. Ideally, replacing maintenance with standard diagnostics, without wasting time. I assume that a certain category will categorically disagree with this.
And More: Hyundai Tucson 2010, designed for Russia, does not require maintenance until 15,000 km, although when delivered to the Americans, maintenance starts at 12,000 km. Probably in this case, the level of reliability is the same, but the assessment of the contingent made its own adjustments, not for the better for the Russians. So, the issue of operational diagnostics is very relevant in the real world.
