The upper support bearing is an important element in the design of the Granta front strut. The “supports” are involved in the rotation of the front strut during a turn, and also absorb axial loads and provide rigidity to the mechanism.
The “support” itself is a housing of two cups, inside of which the bearing itself is located, consisting of a rubber separator with balls inside. It also contains gaskets (vibration and noise insulators). The listed elements, as well as the design of the front support, are presented in the photo.

Causes and signs of failure, diagnostics
The node takes a dynamic (variable) load, and failure, as well as replacement, is usually required for several reasons:
- Part wear, time to failure (service life);
- Accidents, frequent driving in potholes, aggressive driving style;
- Contamination of the support bearing from the inside, ingress of moisture and dust;
- Malfunction of suspension (shock absorbers, springs).
The main sign that a support bearing will need to be replaced is that the Granta rattles and creaks under the hood or near the struts. This appears after 80-100 thousand kilometers, under appropriate operating conditions of the car.
The design of the “support” and the front pillar is complex; the following elements can fail:
- The entire support, including the body (rarely) - position 4;
- Support bearing (more often) – position 8;
- Rubber gaskets wear out (more often) - position 9.
It is important to know:
Attention: To decide which element needs to be replaced , you should disassemble the entire assembly, the diagram of which is presented below.
Diagnostics of support bearings
To diagnose a breakdown, do the following:
- Raise the hood, find the front supports;
- Place your hand over the knot;
- Start to strongly rock the car from bottom to top (or ask an assistant);
- If you feel a knock or hear, as well as other incomprehensible sounds, it means that there are problems. It is worth disassembling or replacing the front support mechanism.

How to check support bearings
How to restore an old bearing and support
When the opportunity arises to save a thousand or two on the purchase of spare parts, folk art has no boundaries. Once upon a time this was really justified, since spare parts were delivered to order, and it was long and expensive.
Now there is a choice for every taste and budget, and parts are often sold within an hour's availability.
However, sometimes selective replacement of parts in a support is justified even now. The car can be rare and exotic, and the entire set can be unreasonably expensive. Then it is quite possible to disassemble the removed support assembly, inspect it more thoroughly and replace only the truly worn parts.
Most often, it is enough to replace only the bearing. Many companies allow this; the bearing has its own catalog number and can be purchased separately. Or choose the appropriate size, this is also possible.
As a result, the restored support will serve for a long time and is no worse than a new one.

Preparatory measures for replacing the support bearing Do-it-yourself grants
Replacing the support bearing of the Lada Granda strut can be done in two ways.
- Removing the front strut and unscrewing the wheel alignment bolts.
- Removing the strut module along with the rotating mechanism and brake disc assembly without unscrewing the adjusting fasteners.
Both methods cannot be performed without removing the strut, but using the second method, which is described below, you can avoid another wheel alignment.
Preparation for repair
It is advisable to carry out the replacement in an inspection hole, so you will save time on the convenience of performing operations to remove/install the unit. The car is in first gear; to comply with safety regulations, use wheel chocks.
Tools for work
- Any jack.
- Large wrench to remove chassis bolts.
- A long 30mm wrench for unscrewing the hub nut.
- Clamps for tightening shock absorbers.
- Tool for removing tie rod ends.
- Hammer, chisel, core.
- Set of keys (22, 17, 13).
- "Ratchets" on 13, 17, 19.
- Hex key for unscrewing the rod nut.
- Special heads. "Eshki" E8 and E12.
- Large negative screwdriver.
- Pliers.
- Penetrating lubricant such as WD-40.
- Torque wrench for tightening the rod nut.
Required set of new parts
- Supports or individual support bearings, depending on the breakdown;
- Rubber gaskets (if you are only changing the bearing);
- Boot with tie rod cotter pin (if replacement is required).
Replacing the front strut of a Lada Granta
We remove and repair the shock absorber strut when the upper support, bearing, spring and the telescopic strut itself wear out.
The telescopic stand cannot be repaired - it must be replaced.
For removal and installation you will need keys 13, 17, 19, a head 19.
The work is best done on a lift, but can be done on level ground using a jack and safety stand.
It is advisable to replace the wallpaper on the rack, even if only one is faulty.
Brake the vehicle with the parking brake and place wheel chocks under the rear wheels. Loosen the front wheel mounting bolts. Raise the front part of the car with a jack and remove the wheel.
Disconnect the tie rod end from the strut swing arm. For this:
1. — turn the steering wheel all the way in the direction opposite to the detachable tip; - unbend and remove the cotter pin | 2. Using a 19mm spanner, partially unscrew the ball pin fastening nut. |
3. Inserting a mounting blade between the swing arm and the tip, press the tip away from the lever and, striking the end of the swing arm with a hammer, press the ball pin out of the lever. | This operation can be performed using a puller. |
4. Finally unscrew the nut securing the ball pin... | 5...and remove the ball pin from the hole in the swing arm. |
6. If you are removing the strut for disassembly, loosen the shock absorber rod nut using a special tool or a 22 mm spanner while holding the rod with a 9 mm spanner. | 7. Using a 13 mm spanner, loosen the three nuts securing the upper strut support to the car body. |
8. To minimize the violation of the camber angle of the front wheels, use a center punch or paint to mark the bolt of the upper mounting of the steering knuckle and the strut bracket. | 9. Using a 17 mm socket wrench, unscrew the nuts of the bolts of the upper and lower fastening of the steering knuckle to the strut, holding the bolts from turning with a 17 mm socket wrench. |

Replacing the front shock absorber strut support:
Replacing the support bearing on Grant:
- If the shock absorbers are oil, then the rod goes down to the bottom. Therefore, we assemble the mechanism quickly. It is easier with gas and combined models, since the rod only rises upward. In the case of an oil product, do not forget to pump them and remove air.
- If you are installing the original front mount, replace the factory metal washers on both sides of the damper. When installing “supports”, for example SS20, this is not required; they are included in the kit.
Step-by-step technology for replacing the support bearing without removing the strut
- After hanging the wheel with a jack, remove it and put it aside.
- We dismantle the stabilizer strut in order to prevent restriction of the free movement of the rack assembly.
- Armed with a hexagon, insert it into the recess at the end of the rod and hold it while unscrewing the central nut, which directly fixes the rod itself.
- We roll the jack under the center of the ball pin and raise the stand until the load is removed from the auxiliary jack. The stand begins to show play.
- Using zip ties, we compress the spring coils. We simulate the compression amount to be insignificant, after which we unload the jack, which was used to lift the rack itself. The stand, following the jack lever, goes down.
- Now is the time to “separate” the support bearing from the rod. We carry out the manipulation - we move the rod down and remove the “support” from it through the void that appears under the body cup.
- We clean the support cup and its rubber seal from dirt accumulations. When installing the “SS-20” supports, there is no need for a lower cup.
- Next, we assemble, taking care to follow the reverse sequence to dismantling. We recommend lubricating the fasteners with graphite substance.
- Having completed the installation procedure, we check the tightening torques on all fastening units.
- We install the wheel in its original place and proceed to a similar procedure on the second side of the car.

Description
In the power circuit of the Master strut support for the Lada Granta , as in all SS20 supports, separation of loads from the weight of the car and from the shock absorbers is provided. Dynamic loads from the shock absorber rod and bump stop are absorbed by the support damper, and the weight of the vehicle is absorbed through the spring cup by a thrust bearing. This division of the load allows for high reliability of the damper and bearing.
Support diagram SS20 Master for LADA Granta
The contact area of the SS20 Master support housing with the body is larger than the contact plane of the standard support, thereby reducing the specific loads on the body shell, which protects it from extrusion (deformation of the contact plane), which is more likely when operating with supports of a standard design.
The Master support for the LADA Granta is equipped with a more reliable rubber-coated thrust bearing SS20 . The SS20 bearing races are rubber-lined on the outside, up to 5 mm thick, which further increases the vibration isolation of the body from the suspension. In addition, the SS20 bearing has an increased load capacity compared to the standard one. The design of the SS20 support bearing provides reliable protection from dirt, as it has a rubber sealing collar similar to an oil seal.
Differences between supports for cars with and without ESD
The standard Lada Granta supports have two options - for cars with electric power steering 21900-2902821-10 and for cars without power steering 21900-2902821-00. These modifications differ from each other in that an increased caster angle is provided for a car with an amplifier. The SS20 Master support for the Lada Granta also has two modifications: for cars with an ESD, the Caster angle is 2°45′, and for cars without an ESD, the Caster angle is 1°40′. Such differences in Caster angles are ensured by different displacements of the damper axis back (along the direction of travel).

And in addition, the damper axis is tilted so as to be coaxial with the shock absorber rod. This solution reduces the bending moment on the rod and at the same time reduces the load on the damper.
Damper operation
Scheme of operation of the damper in the SS20 Master support for LADA Granta
In area A, the rubber works in compression, in area B - in shear, in area C - in compression and tension. The expansion of the damper in zone A reduces the relative loads, which reduces the likelihood of ruptures and delamination of the damper. The central bushing with a conical lower part provides an X-shaped damper, and thus the damper is blocked from being pulled out during critical impacts and ensures reliable operation of the rubber element. The reliability of the damper is also ensured thanks to a specially developed rubber compound formulation, optimized based on the results of a series of tests.
The profile of the upper limit cup of the included support and the shape of the upper part of the damper with fins are designed to work together and contribute to a smoother engagement of the damper during the rebound stroke. This ensures a reduction in vibrations and shocks transmitted to the body when the wheel moves down, when falling into holes, and a softer perception of uneven roads.
Note! The SS20 Master support for the Lada Granta is equipped with the original SS20 upper limit cup, but the lower limit cup is not installed.
