Operating rules
In order to avoid new clutch problems, you should follow these simple rules:
- Press the clutch pedal smoothly, but release it more sharply, but without throwing it.
- When parking on an incline, it is better to release the clutch pedal and engage the handbrake (handbrake - approx.). The handbrake must be adjusted and keep the machine on the slope.
- Shift gears as quickly as possible, avoiding “throwing” of the gearbox.
- In the cold season, when many people press the clutch pedal to make it easier to start the engine, the clutch experiences increased load. The clutch system does not suffer wear only when the oil warms up.
- While driving, do not keep your foot on the clutch pedal, but slightly further away from it.
As you can see for yourself, despite the fact that the process of replacing the clutch is quite complex, time-consuming and will take more than one or two hours of your time, it is still possible to do it yourself.
Reference!
Clutch - thanks to this mechanism, torque is transmitted from the transmission to the engine. The transmission itself is carried out thanks to the presence of a clutch cable, which connects the mechanism to the gearbox, due to which the start, braking and gear shifting take place.
What is this?
Structurally, the mechanism is represented by the following elements:
The slightest malfunction in the system affects the operation of the machine. Experienced drivers understand the presence of problems with the clutch by the following signs:
There are many reasons for a faulty transmission mechanism. Among them:
If there is contamination, cleaning is enough to restore the unit's operation. If several elements of the device have failed, then it is more advisable to replace it. Experts advise buying new parts, because old parts soon fail and you have to look for a working spare part again. Car experts note that the average clutch life is up to 100,000-150,000 km. Much also depends on the driving style of the motorist.
What malfunctions can happen to the clutch?
Although this list is small, if problems arise it can cause quite a few problems:
- The clutch does not engage - this malfunction occurs when the clutch pedal has too much free play. As a rule, when engaging first gear, a characteristic cracking sound occurs from the gearbox. This problem should not be ignored, as it can lead to even greater problems with the gearbox itself.
- Clutch slipping - the cause of this malfunction is that the car does not gain the required speed when the engine speed increases. As a rule, this is observed first at high speeds, but then becomes noticeable at the “bottoms”. The second symptom is an unpleasant odor that appears at high engine speeds. If such a problem is observed, it is necessary to urgently diagnose the clutch.
- Incorrect travel of the clutch pedal is a sign of this breakdown, uneven travel of the clutch pedal, when the pedal at one time returns to its original position, and at another it is in free floating. It would seem that the reason lies in the spring, but the inspection should begin with the clutch cable.
- The car jerks when you press the clutch pedal - this malfunction is very serious and you should urgently check all connections and the entire clutch for wear and notice them.

But, like in any other car, there are some components that need constant replacement after a certain mileage. Such knots. this is the grip without which every machine cannot exist.
In the process of replacing the clutch
Changing the clutch on a Lada Kalina yourself is difficult, although possible. Below in our article we will describe in detail how to complete such work from start to finish without making mistakes.
Types of clutch in Kalina
On the VAZ 1117 , 1118 and 1119 there are two different types of clutch: 190 and 220 mm. Finding your own diameter is painfully simple, just pay attention to the number of starter mounting bolts. There are 3 of them by 190 mm, 2 by 200 mm. Regardless of the manufacturer's office, you will almost always find a clutch disc, pressure plate and bearing in the assembly.
New clutch kit
If there are traction problems on the road, you need to take a tow truck as traffic may be blocked by a roadblock in the future.
Replacement instructions
The clutch transmits torque from the transmission to the engine. The transmission is carried out thanks to the clutch cable, which connects the power unit to the gearbox and ensures starting the car, shifting gears and braking. Thanks to the lever mechanism, the car is set in motion.
Which clutch should you choose?
There are several types of clutch, differing:
The clutch is a complex mechanism, so before replacing it on your Lada Kalina yourself, you should carefully study the design and features of the mechanism.
On VAZ 1117, 1118 and 1119 clutches of 190 and 200 mm are installed. The diameter can be determined by the number of starter mounting bolts. For 190 mm there are 3 of them, and for 200 mm - 2. This includes a clutch disc, basket and release bearing. The most popular brands are: Valeo, Sachs, Luk, VIS, Kraft.
When using a drive from other models, you need to pay attention to the flywheel, the type of which is determined by the number of starter pins. There are two of them in the Lada Kalina, and three in the VAZ 2108. The clutch resource depends on the components and operating conditions. A high-quality drive can last for 100 thousand kilometers.
If troubles occur with the clutch on the road, it is better to call a tow truck or have the car towed by another vehicle, otherwise this may lead to gearbox failure.
Tools
To replace the clutch, the car must be raised, since some of the work is performed from below. To do this, you can use a lift, overpass or inspection pit. From the tools and materials for the replacement procedure with your own hands, you need to prepare:
When dismantling the gearbox, the oil must be drained. If you carry out the work yourself, then you need to drain all the lubricant. If you have an assistant, you can drain some of the liquid from the wires so that oil does not leak when they are disconnected.

If suddenly during a trip you discover that the pedal has treacherously failed and there is no longer any hope that the car will last until the planned trip to the car service center, you need to know 3 possible options for further action.
The first is to ask a friend to hold out the frozen car in tow, the second is to call a tow truck. But what to do if your friends are far away and there is no tow truck? In this case, there is a 3rd option: try to restore the clutch yourself so that it works until you get to the service station.
The driver is required to do the following:
Here we go. Slowly? Of course, but don't even count on 2nd gear. If you try to switch, the gearbox will instantly fail, and its repair will cost a lot.

The drive cable is adjusted by moving its lower tip forward until it stops. In this position, the distance between the guide arm and the fork is measured, which should be 27 mm. If the specified value does not correspond, you should adjust the size with a leash.
How to replace the clutch on Kalina yourself?
Lada Kalina is a reliable car that has proven itself on domestic roads. In each generation, manufacturers corrected shortcomings and introduced some innovations. When using a car, some components wear out and require repair or replacement. For example, over time it is necessary to change the clutch. Replacing the clutch on Kalina with your own hands is a rather labor-intensive procedure, but it can be done at home. The article describes the process in detail and also includes a video.
Problem options
Instructions for adjusting the clutch drive
- Slipping. As a rule, it is first observed in higher gears, but later moves to lower ones. As the engine speed increases, the car's speed remains at the same level, and eventually the car refuses to move at all. Along with slipping, an unpleasant burning smell appears. If you notice these 2 symptoms, do not hesitate. Replacing the clutch cable is the bare minimum, but the problem could be even more serious. The main reason lies in the small free play of the pedal. The linings can also wear out and even components can be dismantled.
- Incomplete release of the clutch. This problem occurs when engaging 1st gear, accompanied by a grinding noise. If you close your eyes to this, the gearbox will soon fly away. The cause of the problem is the increased free play of the clutch pedal.
- The Lada Kalina car moves jerkily when the clutch is engaged. Impaired smooth running indicates severe wear of the linings, washers, damper springs and driven disk. The problem needs to be fixed immediately.
- Pedal slip. When pressed, the pedal becomes “wobbly” and unruly, and as a result, the clutch is not fully engaged. A characteristic noise is heard, the pedal does not return to its place. The reason is that the spring is broken, and you cannot do without replacing individual parts, including the clutch cable.
Replacing the release bearing Kalina 2, 1118, Cross, Sport
To make a replacement you will need to put your car on a pit or a lift. Repairs are also possible if you have reliable supports and a jack. It is worth noting that without a pit or lift, the replacement method without removing the box, which is described at the end of the article, is suitable.
Important to know: For work, it is best to use a set of sockets with a ratchet. When directly dismantling the manual transmission, ask someone to help you “pull” it off. To replace the VP without removing the box, you will need two studs with a diameter of 10 mm and a length of 30-35 mm.
How to remove the gearbox and release bearing on Kalina 2 (1.4-1.6 8kl) with your own hands
Replacing the release bearing on a Lada Kalina begins with dismantling the gearbox; this process is described in detail in step-by-step instructions with photos/videos. Perform the operations in order.
- Open the hood of the car and immediately remove the battery.
- Next, remove the air filter by unscrewing the clamp and disconnecting the fastenings to the body.
- The clutch cable is located behind the battery; you need to unscrew the nut and disconnect the cable from the fastener.
- Now disconnect the plug of the speed sensor wire, it is located behind the “engine”, in the area of the pipes.
- Next, find the upper bolts securing the gearbox to the engine and unscrew them.
- The last operations on top of the gearbox are unscrewing the starter and its terminals, as well as disconnecting the clutch cable and electrical wiring.
- Remove the front wheels and tighten the hub nuts. We disconnect the protection (mud flaps) under the wing.
- Immediately disconnect the terminal of the reversing lights wire.
- Nearby there is a suspension beam, first twist the rear nut with a 24mm wrench.
- Now we move on to the ball joints, loosen the nuts and remove them on both sides.
- On the same side of the manual transmission we find the oil drain plug, unscrew it and drain it into any container.
- Between the manual transmission and the engine there is a clutch protective cover. To remove it, unscrew the nuts around the perimeter.
- Let's move on to dismantling the gearshift mechanism. First, unscrew the two bolts and remove the cover.
- Then unscrew the screw that secures the linkage connection.
- The next step is to remove the wheel drive shafts from the gearbox on both sides.
Tip: Use a pry bar or other lever to remove the actuators. The process is shown in the photo.
- Let's return to the suspension. On the manual transmission side, it is necessary to unscrew the bolt securing the lever, and also disconnect the extension.
- Next, to remove the gearbox and replace the release bearing of the VAZ Kalina, unscrew the lower bolts securing the gearbox to the engine, as well as the front cushion. Before doing this, be sure to install a support under the engine.
- As a result, the housing of the high-speed unit (MKPP-2181) will be completely disconnected from the mating units, and it can be dismantled. First, use a sharp, wide screwdriver to separate the assembly from the engine.
- Then we manually dismantle the assembly. It is advisable to use a special telescopic stand or ask a partner for help, since the gearbox is not light. After removal, we proceed to replacing the release bearing on the Lada Kalina with our own hands.
How to change the release bearing on Kalina - step-by-step technology
The clutch release bearing for Kalina 2, 1118, Cross, Sport (including 8 valves) is located in the crankcase (see photo at the beginning of the article), to remove the old “releaser” follow the instructions.
- First, use a screwdriver to remove the coupling spring, after which the VP will be removed from the shaft without difficulty.
- Next, inspect the fork, check for smoothness, absence of radial and axial play, as well as runout. If the fork is in working condition, then check the input shaft on which the VP is located: splines, seating surface. No nicks, cracks, or corrosion are allowed.
- After checking the unit, if the condition is normal, the coupling should be replaced. In reverse order, put the coupling on the shaft (the ear should mate with the fork without distortion). Secure the spring and check the smooth operation of the mechanism.
- When the new clutch release bearing is installed on Kalina, you can begin installing the box. The operations are performed in reverse order. To lift the gearbox to the power unit, it is recommended to use third-party assistance or a telescopic transmission stand.
How to replace the release bearing on Kalina without removing the box
Brief instructions for replacing the gearbox without removing the gearbox: 1. First, remove the wheel drives on both sides. 2. Place a support under the manual transmission. 3. Then unscrew the bolts securing the box to the power unit, leaving two unscrewed. 4. Insert three long pins into the threaded holes of the unscrewed bolts, as shown in the photo. 5. Now we unscrew the remaining fasteners, and then “pull out” the assembly along the studs by 25-30 cm, so that you can replace the coupling (pick it up by hand).
Attention: Securely fasten the manual transmission to a support - this is the key to your safety when performing replacement.
When replacing the clutch driven disc, it is advisable to replace the pressure plate (basket), even if there are no noticeable signs of wear on its working surface. The fact is that during operation, its working surface wears out and the rigidity of the diaphragm spring weakens. It is also necessary to replace the release bearing if it has play, sticks when rotating, or makes a clearly audible noise.
To complete the work, you will need a mandrel to center the clutch driven disc.
1. Removing the gearbox
If you do not plan to replace the pressure plate assembly (basket), use a center punch to mark its position on the flywheel.
2 . 8 mm socket or socket wrench, unscrew the six bolts securing the basket to the flywheel, holding the flywheel from turning with a mounting blade or a large slotted screwdriver.
3. Remove the basket and driven disk.
4. Using a slotted screwdriver, pry up the ends of the spring and remove them from the protrusions of the release bearing coupling.
5. Remove the release bearing assembled with the clutch from the guide bushing.
6. We remove the spring.
7. To replace the fork and its bushing, pry it up with a screwdriver and remove the rubber protective cover of the clutch release fork.
8. Remove the plastic fork bushing from the crankcase hole.
9. Moving it upward, remove the lower end of the fork lever axis from the seat and remove the clutch release fork.
We wash the removed parts in kerosene. We replace damaged and worn parts.
1. We clean the splined part of the gearbox input shaft and the guide sleeve of the release bearing from dirt and old grease.
2. Apply a thin layer of CV joint-4 lubricant to them and to the working surface of the clutch fork axis.
3. We install the drive parts (fork, spring, release bearing) into the clutch housing in the reverse order of removal. Apply grease to the working surface of the fork.
4. We insert the centering mandrel into the hole in the end of the crankshaft.
5. We install the driven clutch disc on the mandrel, orienting it so that the side where the disc hub protrudes more faces the gearbox.
6. Install the cart.
7. Aligning the previously made marks, use an 8 mm to evenly tighten the basket mounting bolts. We finally tighten the bolts to a torque of 19.1-30.9 Nm (2.0-3.2 kgf-m).
8. Remove the centering mandrel.
9. We install the gearbox in the reverse order of removal.
10. We check the operation of the clutch release drive and adjust the length of the cable.
