The production of the second generation Chevrolet Niva was planned to begin in 2016. The cost of designing the model is estimated at $200 million, and the investment in organizing the production of the new model is 4 billion rubles. The production was expected to be up to 120 thousand cars per year.

It was planned to carry out stamping and welding of the new generation body in a new workshop built specifically for this purpose. The engine was planned to be 135-horsepower, developed by PSA Peugeot Citroën, the gearbox and transfer case were from India and Italy.

The concept of the new Chevrolet Niva was demonstrated in August 2014, but in March 2015 the development of the model was suspended. However, taking into account that the model has been developed, pre-production vehicles have been released (sea tests have been completed in Italy, Spain, Sweden, a set of winter tests have been completed in Kogalym), a new stamping and body shop has been built at the GM-AvtoVAZ plant (where new equipment has already been delivered and installed ), and the construction of a plant for the production of engines under license from PSA Peugeot-Citroen engines has been launched - serial production of the second generation is predicted in 2016-2019.

But in those days, the Tolyatti auto giant was experiencing difficult times for the first time and, as you might guess, there were no funds for a production version. The VAZ engine of the Chevrolet Niva is not highly reliable. It is interesting that in the period 2006-2008, along with the VAZ engine, the Chevy Niva was equipped with a 1.8-liter Z18XE unit from Opel.
