Self-diagnosis of problems

If you don't like the way your vehicle drives over obstacles after a while, or turns into turns less smoothly. First, carry out diagnostics to eliminate other “suspects” and come to the technical center with a clear task for specialists:

  • Release the brake pedal. Take the wheel with both hands by the opposite parts and rock it. If a pronounced play is noticeable, this may mean that the problem is in the hub bearing - it must guide the wheel correctly, strictly in one plane; if it is neglected, it can “go figure eight”.
  • If the wheel play does not occur due to the hub, then the fault is in the chassis. In this case, play appears even when the brake pedal is pressed.
  • If the car “wobbles” in a vertical plane, the stabilizer link is poorly secured or the ball joint is worn out.
  • If the car wobbles “horizontally” (push it into the front fender, after tightening the handbrake), it may be that the rod ends have worn out and become unusable.

The design of the front suspension of a front-wheel drive vehicle assumes that all its parts should “age” evenly, almost equally, that is, even if they have different wear patterns, they need to be replaced with new ones in pairs. New components will work evenly, “erasing” from scratch.

Front suspension features

The front suspension is based on gas-filled double-sided shock absorber struts, on which a series of coil springs, barrel springs and lower arms are installed. Stabilizers are located on pyramids. The longitudinal extensions from previous versions have been replaced by universal, L-shaped arms that can withstand heavy loads in any direction thanks to a five-degree caster.

Studying the part in detail, one can note something in common with the way the front-wheel drive of Renault cars is designed. An interesting feature is the presence of a subframe, thanks to which the car has two points of support for stretch marks.

Rear suspension features

Special attention is paid to the rear suspension, in which the mechanism installed in RenaultZoo electric vehicles has been redesigned. Semi-independent suspension models differ from versions with extended beams; the suspension has longitudinal linked arms. The manufacturer decided to limit itself to installing domestic struts, and the shock absorbers were located in the arch, which increased driving comfort and safety. The spars reliably cover each rear suspension spring, which also increases ease of movement.

Revolution is ahead

The largest number of revolutionary innovations for VAZ were applied to the front suspension. First of all, this is a change in the concept of its architecture. For the first time on Lada cars, the front suspension is mounted on a subframe, which will increase its rigidity and geometry accuracy while simultaneously increasing vibration-acoustic characteristics.

No less revolutionary is the location of the steering rack, which has moved downwards, which eliminates the need to turn the wheels through levers - now the rods are connected directly to the hubs. This approach will significantly improve the car's handling characteristics, bringing them to the European level, which has been expected from VAZ products for several decades. Of the usual elements, only the electric power steering remains, which will be mounted on the steering column to simplify the design.

The Lada Vesta has a completely independent front suspension, with a castor angle of five degrees. MacPherson struts and L-shaped arms of our own design are used. Russian engineers also introduced a new stabilizer, which received a different shape, elongated struts and a different metal composition. The result is a much more sensitive system, which contributes to improved clarity and smoothness of control, as well as the behavior of the sedan on the road.

Despite the new layout, the developers managed to maintain an acceptable ground clearance (ground clearance) for Vesta, which for the sedan is 185 mm from the ground to the engine crankcase protection.

This means that the new product will feel quite confident on Russian roads. As for other figures, the wheelbase of the Lada Vesta is 2635 mm, the front wheel track is 1510 mm, and the distance between the rear wheels is exactly the same.

LADA Vesta SW – advantages and disadvantages

This is a new generation domestic car, which can be called progress for AVTOVAZ. Good handling, increased safety, many innovations and improvements - all this allows you to appreciate the car. However, there are also disadvantages:

  • weak stabilizer struts;
  • creaking and tapping of the rubber band after some time of use;
  • increased susceptibility to corrosion of subframes at the place where silent blocks are attached. The reason is the increased pocket size.

In addition to the above, it is worth noting other features of the new Lada Vesta platform, directly or indirectly related to the suspension and its functioning. First of all, this is the use of the latest generation of Bosch ABS, EBD and ESP systems. It is also impossible to ignore the close cooperation with the Renault-Nissan concern, thanks to which the VAZ new product will receive high-quality power steering from Nissan Qashqai and reliable brake system components from Renault Megane and Logan. All this together allows us to hope that the quality of VAZ cars with the advent of Vesta will reach a completely new level, which fans of the domestic automobile industry have long dreamed of.

Operating conditions in Russia place special demands on the vehicle's driving performance, which is why the Lada Vesta suspension was developed with the active participation of AVTOVAZ engineers, and then underwent various development tests both in our country and abroad.

Perhaps it is not the nut that secures the rod to the support that rests against the cone on the rod, but the support itself that rests. The cone prevents it from sitting completely on the rod. You will tighten the nut with or without a washer, but the support does not rest flat on the end of the rod, but rests with the narrow edge of the hole against the cone and “plays” as the car moves. Then the edge probably wrinkles a little (in one of the photos there even seem to be visible traces) and begins to play more, hence the louder boom over time. Here you need to place a washer under the support, but only a thin one, about a millimeter and a half maximum, but there don’t seem to be such thin M12 washers, they are all 2.5 mm. Therefore, perhaps an even better option would be to space out the hole in the support by 12.5-13 mm (look at the location), like the inner hole of the M12 washer, so that the support fits as well as the washer in the photo, and the washer on top under the nut to be sure. If the assumption is correct, then everything is quiet on the other rack because there is no cone on that rod.

It so happened that for many years the weak link of VAZ cars was the chassis. In his new product, the manufacturer offered a revised and improved version of its predecessors. The bulk of the changes were made to the front suspension. Many new parts have appeared, such as a subframe to increase body strength, L-shaped levers made of high-quality steel.

  5. We insert new ones and assemble the structure in reverse order.

Tighten the bolts with a force of 2.0 kgf/m.

Differences between the suspension of Lada Vesta SW and Lada Vesta SW Cross

The version with the Cross prefix differs not only in its external qualities, but also in its technical properties. Externally, the model looks strong and brutal. But driving performance does not always correspond to appearance. To justify the name of the model, the manufacturer decided to change some structural suspension components, but did not conduct experiments with the engine.

The Vesta Cross suspension has slightly different shock absorbers. Here they are more rigid, although they belong to the same type. The sports version has longer and stiffer springs. Has anyone encountered this problem, please tell me what it could be. When driving through potholes with sharp edges, a dull clanging sound is heard from below on the left, reminiscent of the knock of an unscrewed disk on the hub. The sound is best noticeable at low speed when driving in 1st or 2nd gear. Then it just gets muted. The defect occurred immediately after purchase. A visit to the dealer revealed nothing.

Currently, AVTOVAZ produces standard polyurethane bushings for Vesta. The stabilizer does not creak in them.

I didn’t catch up with the diagnostic process, so I gave the car away for half a day through a personal manager. They found it themselves. I rummaged through the technological instructions (https://yadi.sk/d/zTESYkz0mDbKY; https://yadi.sk/i/jd13nycwoyZVi links from the documentation section) and, as I understood from the explanations, the “belt on the stabilizer bar” fig. 7-2. You can look at it using a mirror. To be honest, I haven’t looked at it myself, but I’ll look in soon. It's a very uncomfortable place - behind the steering rack. By the way, such a knock could have occurred on the right side if the belt had broken on the other side. Honestly, this defect ruined the whole impression of the car.

Rear suspension device

The rear suspension of the Lada Vesta is the same as on Renault Megane cars. This diagram is provided by the Renault-Nissan concern. At the rear, the Lada has barrel-shaped coil springs on a transverse beam with spaced shock absorbers and brake drums.

A photo of the Vesta pendant gives an idea of ​​the changes:

  • The designers were the first to use a new arrangement of springs and struts with spaced mounting;
  • The tuning was carried out using original technology at Renault's European factories;
  • The rear track has been increased to 1510 mm, as a result of which the rear wheel arches have also been enlarged.

We can conclude that Vesta received a new suspension device capable of ensuring passenger comfort and, most importantly, a smooth ride. The suspension device is shown in the photo and consists of:

  1. Rear suspension beam;
  2. Barrel springs;
  3. Double-acting gas-filled shock absorbers

In addition to the described features, the suspension on the Lada Vesta has a number of other equally important innovations.

Change of platform – change of concept

It all started in the mid-2000s, when the Volga auto giant first risked starting the development of a class C sedan. But then there was not enough money to complete the project, and the crisis of 2008 put a final end to those plans. A few years ago, they returned to the developments that had been collecting dust in the archive, deciding to use them as the basis of a new platform, but for class B cars. At the same time, the task was set to be quite revolutionary - to create a modern platform capable of not being inferior to foreign analogues in terms of quality and technological equipment.

As a result, the LADA B platform was born, which formed the basis of the Lada Vesta sedan. The developers call this project completely unique, because for the first time AvtoVAZ used a whole range of innovations that had not previously been used at all on the products of the Volga auto giant. When creating the platform, the successes of the mid-2000s project were taken into account, but with the introduction of a huge number of amendments and modifications, some technologies used on the Priora were used, as well as technologies from the Renault-Nissan concern, which provided, for example, most of the components of the braking system.

Suspension innovations

This use of electronic systems ABS, ESP and EBD allows for a number of advantages. First of all, the built-in stabilization system allows you to easily cope with skidding and drifting of the car while driving. It also allows you to control traction.

A correctly configured Lada Vesta suspension, together with electronics, allows you to simulate a differential lock, which allows you to easily overcome off-road conditions. If you find yourself in a difficult situation, the activated stabilization system can significantly improve the vehicle's maneuverability.

This technology was first used on Lada. The stabilization system received positive feedback from the owners. And now, no matter how difficult the road, Vesta can cope even with difficult off-road conditions.

Reviews and malfunctions in the suspension

Having read the reviews about the suspension, we can say with confidence that the innovations used in the design are aimed primarily at the quality of vehicle handling, safe driving and passenger comfort. However, not all reviews are positive; during operation, extraneous noise appears in the rear suspension.

Some dealerships suggest installing shims on the rear shock absorber. To diagnose the performance of the suspension yourself, you need to hang the car. In this case, the front wheels should not touch the surface. By moving the wheel in both planes, we determine the play:

  1. When the brake pedal is released, play is felt - the front hub bearing is worn out;
  2. Play is felt when the brake pedal is pressed and released - the suspension is faulty;
  3. If the rack is poorly secured or the ball joint is worn, play is felt in the vertical plane;
  4. If there is horizontal play, the tie rod end (front suspension module) has failed.

Creaking and knocking noises can be caused by the bushings not being lubricated or the rear shock absorber not having a washer.

Installing soft rubber

The first way to soften the suspension without changing its design is to change the tires. Many people advise reducing the tire pressure, but this method is hardly justified. Tire wear increases, fuel consumption increases, and handling deteriorates. In order to choose soft tires from the variety, you need to arm yourself with certain knowledge and experience of other car owners, since there is no special marking for soft tires.

Soft rubber can be identified visually by its massive side tread and soft sidewall. Among all the parameters on board modern tires you can find one such as TREADWEAR. It stands for wear resistance. The lower its value, the softer the rubber.

An example would be winter tires. It is the softest, but wears out very quickly when used in the summer. Typically, the brands Michelin Energy, Michelin Primacy, Nokian and Continental are famous for the production of soft tires.

You can increase the level of comfort with one more parameter - profile height. High-profile rubber with an index of more than 65% has an increased damping layer compared to low-profile rubber.
