You probably remember the Grant Sport with a 120-horsepower engine, a “short” gearshift mechanism and rear disc brakes. It was released from 2013 to 2022. The peak of sales occurred in 2017 - 2,485 cars were sold. For the scale of VAZ - not a lot, but this is a very specific, narrow segment, and it has a good effect on the brand image.

After the merger of the Kalina and Grant families last year under the Grant brand, the sports versions left the range. AVTOVAZ’s logic is simple: if you want to be more energetic, shell out a million and get a Vesta Sport. And the new Granta Drive Active is a compromise solution.

Of course, Granta Drive Active is not exactly a sport. More precisely, it’s not a sport at all - with the base 127 engine with a volume of 1.6 liters and a power of 106 horsepower, you won’t get much speed. In addition, with a robotic box.

But the “active” Granta has a spectacular body kit with a developed front bumper skirt and scarlet strokes in the style of Vesta Sport. It looks convincing - especially in the eyes of those who are not in the know. Only 15‑inch wheels spoil the whole picture. It's not the diameter, but the track: narrow! The wheels sank into the deep arches and therefore began to appear even smaller.

Inside, the driver's main joy is the seats. The padding was thickened, the side support rollers and shoulder support were increased. But why does the back press into the lower back? There is no such “jamb” in Vesta.

For myself, I would take a Granta Drive Active with a manual transmission - there is one too. But we only found a version with a robot for testing. Calm down, no nerves! The ingenuity of the current AMT robotic box in comparison with its first versions can be described in the words of Neil Armstrong, who conquered the moon: this is a small step for a person and a giant leap for humanity. Gear change speed has increased! I press down the pedal and can’t believe it – the gearbox goes into a lower gear without a dramatic pause.

The same story with maximum overclocking. Switching steals the dynamics, but not critically. As a result, Granta reaches the first 100 km/h in an adequate 12 seconds. Not bad: the old Granta Sport accelerated to 100 km/h in 9.5 seconds. But it’s better that the engine doesn’t reach the chassis than the other way around. After all, it is the suspension that makes the active Grant different from the “passive” one.

It has its own shock absorbers and springs, the body is 18 mm closer to the ground. And it's a completely different ride! There are no infuriating lags, excessive rolls or annoying understeer. Drive Active stands confidently on the arc and does not think of crawling outward. I add gas and it holds up. And no e-collars! You're alone with the car, and it's wonderful. The lightness of this Grant reminded me of the early “eights” and “nines”. I got excited and lost my vigilance.

Lada Granta is a fairly popular car among Russian consumers. Its price is reasonable, and operation is much cheaper than a foreign car. However, not all owners can accurately indicate the main parameters of this machine.

The gasoline tank is installed behind the Grant, under the body, on the right side. This arrangement allows the car to be perfectly balanced, which, in turn, makes it easier to drive. The fuel tank is made of plastic.

Among other things, the designers also made certain changes to the suspension design during the development of the car in question. In particular, a wider caster was installed in the front, this had a positive effect on the vehicle's directional stability.

At the same time, the steering rack was also updated; it is now somewhat shorter than the one installed on Kalina, thanks to this, only three turns of the steering wheel are required for a full turn. This made driving the car much easier

The front suspension also has a new strut module, whose design has undergone a number of changes and has received completely new characteristics as a result.

The stabilizers that provide lateral stability are stronger, as are the body supports.

During the modernization, attention was also paid to the rear suspension. So Granta became the first car in the history of the Volzhsky Automobile Plant to have negative wheel camber values. And this measure greatly improves the vehicle's handling.

What is the volume of the gas tank

Regardless of the modification of the Grant, the volume of its fuel tank is the same and is exactly 50 liters.

To this amount of gasoline should be added about 2 liters already supplied to the fuel supply system and the fuel filter. As a result, the maximum fuel for Grant will be 52 liters.

As previously noted, the car manufacturer indicates that only 95 gasoline should be used. In turn, reviews indicate that the car drives much more economically with this brand than with the cheap 92. Although critics note that they have no problems with the latter type of fuel - studies have proven that in total, their expenses (albeit insignificantly) , but higher.

Pay for the drive

I just didn't have enough width of the asphalt! Granta jumped on the side of the road and flew off the highway backwards. I get out of the salon: thank God, I’m safe, nothing hurts. And Granta is healthy! We pulled the car out of the ravine - there was no damage! After such a flight, a couple of scratches on the sills and a small crack in the lower part of the rear bumper don’t count. So this model retained its legendary strength - even in “active” clothing.

Of course, Granta Drive Active is a compromise. The look is catchy, but the power is not enough. Handling is excellent, but the price to pay for it is unbearable rigidity. The sedan reads every pebble and joint with disgusting meticulousness. You can’t rush along a rough road like you would on a standard Grant—it’s uncomfortable!

Is it worth taking this Grant in the only available Comfort version with an AMT robot for 670 thousand rubles? You can if you want to show off. For this money you can get a basic Vesta, which, even in its standard form, handles much better and does not force you to sacrifice comfort.

If we talk about the Grants family, then the Cross version is more interesting. It has a better balance of handling and comfort, is more practical and looks just as good. And you will save another 50 thousand! So Granta Drive Active is a piece product.

What changed?

By “lucky coincidence,” the author was the owner of a Granta (a 2017 liftback, in the minimum Norma configuration) and came to the test armed for comparisons.

In 2022, VAZ carried out a restyling, designing the front in the “X-style”. The main pair in the transmission was changed from 3.7 to 3.9. All engines were made “non-plug-in” - if the timing belt breaks, the pistons do not meet the valves. Engine control program calibrations have been adjusted. For example, the eight-valve engine now picks up more confidently after the first outbreaks during a cold start. The temperature regime has also changed. If during the cold season you see that the operating temperature after warming up has frozen around 80–82 degrees, do not be alarmed. The thermostat in this case is working properly.

If you take a car without a radio, only with audio preparation, keep in mind that the speaker wiring to the doors is laid normally, and the antenna cable is a pure formality. It runs from the roof antenna to the bottom of the right A-pillar trim. Without an extension cable, you won't be able to reach the audio center.

Liftback, sedan, hatchback or station wagon - which body should you choose?

Four body types for a budget car - an enviable variety. The wheelbase is the same for all, but then the demand for one or another modification largely depends on the rear overhang. That is, the size of the floor, and therefore the volume of the trunk in the standard configuration - with the rear seats not folded and the shelf in the headrest area not removed. The hatchback has a trunk of 240 liters, the station wagon - 360. Unfortunately, there is no “barn” with a large overhang, and in terms of cargo compartment capacity it is easily surpassed by the sedan and liftback with indicators of 500 and 440 liters. In this pairing, the sedan is a mathematical winner, but, say, the trunk lid stops still eat up some of the usable space.

In terms of ease of loading/unloading and the ability to accommodate large luggage, the victory goes to the liftback. Its fifth door rises up along with the rear window and opens a huge opening. It easily fits items that cannot be squeezed into a sedan.

Which engine and which gearbox is better?

Eight-valve VAZ-11186 engine with a power of 87 hp. It is aggregated only with a five-speed manual transmission. An excellent pair for Russian operating conditions! Simple, reliable, maintainable. Let's call it the most universal and family-friendly.

The updated Grants with this power unit have become a little more high-torque. When driving under tension there is less detonation clanging. Fuel consumption has increased within reason. From the pre-restyling liftback it was possible to squeeze out 4.9–5.2 liters per 100 km on an empty country road. The current car in similar conditions “eats” 5.5–5.6 liters per hundred. But more realistic values ​​are still 5.8–5.9 in summer and 6.0–6.2 in winter. The short main pair and the updated engine control program had an effect.

The option is more likely for youth - a sixteen-valve VAZ-21127 engine with a power of 106 hp. with the same five-speed manual transmission. The faster it is, the more expensive it is. But on cars of lower trim levels the price tag is even more or less acceptable. But the same engine with a robotic gearbox cannot be called a great success. Although a robot is cheaper, it cannot replace a full-fledged automatic in terms of ease of control, comfort during switching and reliability (we are talking about clutch life). Especially in a metropolis.

A suitable habitat for a robot is provincial cities that are not overloaded with traffic jams. And if there is an ardent desire to take a Grant with two pedals, and even with an eye to operation in a large city, it is better to take a closer look at the deformed sixteen-valve VAZ-21126 with a power of 98 hp. with a four-speed Jatco automatic transmission. True, the price tag of such a “stuffed” Grant is comparable to the price of Vesta and Logan of lower trim levels.

Box functions

This 4-speed automatic transmission is still installed in the Nissan Almera. It is as old as the world, invented a long time ago. Many people say that this is not a Japanese, but a Chinese box. Most likely, the components in it are from China. Most suppliers use this country, there is nothing wrong with that.

But the reliability of the JATCO box has been proven by practice. I have never heard people complain about unit malfunctions.

The classic machine works adequately, there are several modes:

Is it comfortable to sit?

The front seats are a compromise. Relatively high rise, not very long cushion, but overall decent back support. However, after restyling, the chairs became more pleasing to the eye, but less pleasing to the back and legs. . I had no questions about the pre-restyling car - I drove it without problems with the wheels up to 50,000 km. But the updated liftback and similar Grants from friends were slightly eating away at the outer part of the tread on the front tires. Exactly so much that it can be attributed to the imperfect quality of cheap tires. Indeed, the steering wheel is straight, the car does not pull anywhere while driving, the run-out is good, and fuel consumption is low. But I stopped by to check so as not to guess on the coffee grounds. The officials announced about five thousand rubles for the operation! Result: caster and camber are normal. Moreover, the parameters for the left and right wheels have very minimal discrepancies. The problem was with the toe-in - a slight fall out of the tolerance range. Simply put, the wheels were spinning a little. The shoes have been rehabilitated. I understand that two new 14-inch Artmotion tires from Belarus will cost less than checking wheel alignment angles from the officials. But there is also a winter set.

I’ll mention a couple of very useful and inexpensive modifications that are best done in the first days of operation. The first is a self-adhesive seal for the gap between the upper edge of the windshield and the roof

I will list the intricacies of the Japanese 4-speed automatic transmission. As for the first gear mode. If you need to move slowly in the snow or on a descent, this mode will help.

At high speeds (120 and above), virtual 5th gear begins to operate. At about 4000 rpm the speed will be 120 km per hour. As you increase the speed further, you will notice that the engine speed has dropped slightly, but the speed has not changed. This is just for those people who say that 4 steps are not enough. There really aren’t enough of them, but at high speed the engine doesn’t “roar.” It seems like it's in 5th gear.

After the robot, it’s nice to drive such an automatic machine, despite its delays and thoughtfulness. For those who like an automatic transmission, this is an excellent budget choice. What about sound insulation?

When measuring the noise, I didn’t expect any revelations from Granta. But in vain! Already at idle, it easily outperformed the Datsun on-DO and Renault Logan that took part in the “Behind the Wheel” test. I tried it on several times. I deliberately stood closer to the traffic lights, where the flow of traffic starts, truck engines growl, and semi-trailers clank. In vain: a short burst on the device, and then averaged readings around 42 dB.

Let's get going. Fourth gear, flat road, speed 50 km/h. Granta and I again easily “wash” a couple with an automatic and a CVT. Lada produces 61.5 dB versus 66 for on-DO and 64 for Logan. Moreover, Granta is on itchy studded tires, and this is the loudest measurement of several.

Well, you give a hundred in fifth gear! And again a victory: 61.9 dB versus 73 and 68.8. So far, in our tests, only Vesta is quieter. Idling unconditionally. In operating modes too, but on summer tires the gap over the Granta should be reduced.

And now the fly in the ointment. The Granta is averagely quiet on smooth roads. But after changing gears, the hum of gearbox gears began to be heard in the general background, the trunk lock clicked in a small hole, when the next stop and transition to neutral the clutch began to rattle, and on the coarse-grained asphalt the plastic lining of the cabin “speaked.” All these are barely noticeable emissions on the sound level meter indicator. They don’t spoil the overall picture, but the ear can hear them! It would be nice to get rid of the annoying “crickets” in the unexpectedly quiet interior of the updated Granta.
