Lada Granta (in Russian Lada Granta) is a subcompact class B model, assembled by AvtoVAZ PJSC at various sites since 2011. The model is in fairly high demand on the market and is consistently among the 10 best-selling models in the Russian Federation. This is mainly due to the fact that for such a model as the Lada Granta the price is one of the most affordable on the market. This is a budget passenger car. In 2022, it underwent a facelift, and the model range was expanded. Currently it is possible to purchase:
- five-door Lada Granta liftback (internal factory designation VAZ 2191);
- five-door Lada Granta station wagon (internal factory designation VAZ 2194);
- five-door Lada Granta hatchback (in-house designation VAZ 2192);
- five-door Lada Granta sedan (internal factory designation VAZ 2190).
Also on sale are a two-door Lada Granta pickup and van (in-house designation VIS 2349).
If you need a used or new Lada Granta, come to the right place. On the Avto.Tatar car portal we offer you to choose:
- Lada (VAZ) car dealerships, official dealers and other sellers offering to buy new and used Lada Granta;
- Lada (VAZ) car services, including authorized official ones, where they perform full, prompt, and most importantly affordable and high-quality repairs of the Lada Grant, maintenance, both scheduled according to regulations, and unscheduled due to malfunctions, seasonal and others;
- auto stores and other retail outlets where it is possible to purchase Grant spare parts that are in demand during repairs and maintenance, in particular, we are talking about fluids, filters and spare parts related to consumables;
- insurance companies that insure this model of the Tolyatti and Izhevsk assembly, including issuing compulsory (MTPL, Green Card) and voluntary insurance policies (CASCO, DSAGO and others).
Keep in mind that the price of a Lada Granta will depend not only on the body type, mileage, but also on the configuration. This subcompact model is offered in several basic trim levels, and the commercial version is distinguished by the nature of its cargo platform.
And in order to be able to buy a Lada Granta correctly, especially for used cars, let’s consider what modifications of the car exist and their history.
Background
Let's note the most important fact first. Regarding the Lada Grant, the terms “new model” or “generation” can be used very conditionally. Especially after the 2022 facelift and in relation to body types such as the Lada Granta hatchback and Lada Granta station wagon. In fact, the two body types indicated are nothing more than the Lada Kalina 2 . And the Lada Granta sedan, Lada Granta liftback with this model are sisters by blood, relatives and friends. Therefore, the story must begin with the Lada Kalina. But that's not all. Until recently, all front-wheel drive models of AvtoVAZ PJSC had the same suspension architecture and were created on the basis of the Gamma-1 platform. That’s why we must start from the very origins, from the legendary cart right up to the present day.
Gamma-1 platform
So, the mid-70s of the last century. Don't be surprised that we had to go back 40 years. At the Togliatti plant, cars are being assembled with might and main on the rear-wheel drive Italian platform inherited from the Fiat 124. But it became clear that a front-wheel drive car and a new platform were needed. We had money, so we turned to the engineers of the German automobile manufacturer Porsche for help with front-wheel drive. At the same time, they went to FIAT with the same request, but about a new platform. But the Italians refused and recommended the engineering company UTS. Accordingly, the development of a new trolley began almost simultaneously in the USSR (Tolyatti), Germany (Stuttgart) and Italy (Turin). And in the process of work, we also used solutions that were used on other cars. For example, flowing side members were copied from the German Opel Kadett and the Italian Fiat Ritmo.
The layout of the Gamma-1 trolley turned out to be classic for modern cars. The engine was placed transversely in front (front-engine layout). The front suspension became independent, with MacPherson struts. The rear suspension is semi-independent, U-shaped torsion beam. The flat-shaped tank was located under the rear passenger seat. The steering began to use rack and pinion, the classic rack and pinion. Much later a subframe appeared. But the wheelbase was about 2.5 meters, within these limits the distance between the axles of most models created on this cart.
The platform lived in this form for more than 20 years.
Although everything could have been different. In 1989, they signed a contract with FIAT for the construction of a new automobile plant, this time in Yelabuga. The development of the A93 project has begun. It involved the creation of a budget subcompact B class model, which was planned to be sold in both the Soviet Union and Italy. A new platform was being prepared for it. But the collapse of the USSR also put an end to the A93 project. The plant in Yelabuga survived and continued its activities.
Therefore, when the time came for the Lada Kalina, a new car did not exist, and this was the 90s, a time when there was no money even for fine-tuning pre-production models, not to mention a new platform. That’s why they took the good old Gamma 1 and, using computer technology to the fullest, made a mathematical model out of it. Thanks to 3-D modeling, the space was used as efficiently as possible. They squeezed the last maximum out of the old cart that it was capable of. But the layout remained the same.
The new Lada Granta had to appear not quickly, but very quickly, since they decided to remove the legendary budget line of rear-wheel drive cars, known as “Classics,” from the market, and it was impossible to leave its price segment.
We did it quite simply. We took the Lada Kalina platform, that is, we used ready-made mathematical models and 3-D modeling, and carried out certain modifications. This is how the chassis of the new budget model was created. Everything took only 3 years.
That is, the modern Lada Granta has the Gamma-1 platform, which is more than 30 years old, and this truck has proven its worth on millions of cars of 6 generations assembled in Tolyatti.
Lada Kalina
In the mid-90s, the development of a new generation of subcompact cars began, which would later be called the Lada Kalina family. There may be discrepancies with dates. On the one hand, to develop a new model, what was left of the A93 project, the same Elabuga small car, was used. On the other hand, within the framework of the People's Car project, known as VAZ 1116, there were certain developments. Let's not touch on this topic. Although the story then turned out not to be very good.
Initially, work was carried out on a hatchback, which then received the VAZ 1119 index, let’s say - since 1993. In 1998, they decided on the name Lada Kalina (although initially it was still Calina) and although this is a working name, the car was always called Lada Kalina in Russian. In 1999, a prototype of a five-door hatchback was ready. In 2000, there was already a working prototype of a four-door sedan. And in 2001, a station wagon was also assembled. But it will take another 3 years before the car goes into production; there was simply no money for mass production. Also in 2001, the second generation Lada Niva was sold to Americans for this reason. Americans are still happy that they received a pre-production car for pennies and launched it into series at minimal cost, calling it Chevrolet Niva. But that's a completely different story.
On November 18, 2004, the model was launched into production, its production continued until March 1, 2013. In terms of body types, initially it was on November 18, 2004 that a four-door sedan (VAZ index 1118) went into production. Two years later, on July 21, 2006, they began to assemble a five-door hatchback (VAZ index 1119). And in July 2007, production of a five-door station wagon began (VAZ index 1117). It was on the basis of this model that the development of a new family, the Lada Granta line, began.
The fate of the sedan is the most difficult. It was initially discontinued in March 2009. Production then resumed in September 2009 and was finally completed on May 1, 2011. To replace it, the new Lada Granta has been developed, also known as the VAZ 2190 in the body of a four-door sedan.
The next year, in August 2012, the second generation Lada Kalina was shown at the international motor show in Moscow. In 2013, namely on May 16, 2013, production of the five-door hatchback (VAZ index 2192) and station wagon (VAZ index 2194) started. This time the situation was played out in a different direction. If the Lada Granta is built mostly on the basis of the first generation Lada Kalina, then the second generation Lada Kalina 2 is created on the basis of the four-door Lada Granta sedan (VAZ index 2190). The differences from its predecessors are in the exterior, significant in the interior and technical parts. Let's note the presence of new engines (this, of course, is said loudly, all VAZ power units are connected by one thin strong thread), a four-speed Jatco automatic appeared in the transmission and work was done on the suspension, but the rear suspension turned out to have negative camber. The manual transmission is also modernized, an Atsumitec cable drive was installed, as well as a Shaeffler gear selection mechanism. They began to use a new, so-called “short” steering rack.
The stern has been changed on the exterior, and the interior has a new center console.
Based on the station wagon and hatchback, their own modifications were created. In the summer of 2014, the hatchback received the sports modification Lada Kalina Sport, and the station wagon received the pseudo-off-road Lada Kalina Cross.
And this situation with the Lada Kalina 2 family continued until 2018. They lost one fighter, we are talking about a four-door sedan, the rest were produced until the next facelift. In 2022, AvtoVAZ PJSC decided to curtail the assembly of cars of the Lada Kalina 2 line. That is, production did not stop. In fact, the hatchback and station wagon received a new name. Now this is the Lada Granta hatchback (the internal designation remains the same - VAZ 2192) and the Lada Granta station wagon (also unchanged - VAZ 2194, respectively).
Lada Granta
The engineers of the Tolyatti plant were faced with an ambitious task - to create a model in the budget segment, which should replace several generations of “Classics”, “Kalina” and “Samara 2” on the market at once.
The terms of reference were drawn up by 2008, but everything had to be done not quickly, but very quickly. Therefore, they brought in Japanese engineers from Nissan and French engineers from Renault, took the first generation Lada Kalina as a basis, all the design documentation was in digital form along with mathematical models. Plus, the Swedes from the famous company Autoliv, who worked on the safety of the car, and a group of other foreign comrades also helped. This international team developed a new model in just over two years. Considering that the first sketch was created in 2009. It was a four-door sedan Lada Granta sedan.
During the development, we were guided by the principle - here is the Lada Kalina, what can be removed or combined so that there are as few parts as possible. The platform, doors, and other details were simplified. For example, the Lada Kalina bumper group consisted of 9 parts, and the Lada Granta had 3 parts. The instrument panel is also different (39 parts versus the previous 52). Door trim – 3 parts versus 15 previously.
Aerodynamics were improved by 8%, the aerodynamic drag coefficient Cx was 0.367.
We tried to do something with the chassis. Such a sacramental thought crept in to return the handling characteristic of the VAZ 2108, the “eight” that Porsche engineers were working on was different in this way. The suspension was retuned, and negative rear wheel alignment angles began to be used (-1°). The front suspension castor of the top versions became larger by 2°45', and different upper supports were used. The stabilizer bar was made thicker (22 mm versus 20 mm for Kalina). For the first time they installed a “short” steering rack. The Swedes worked on the hood profile and front bumper to ensure the safety of pedestrians.
We also worked on the exterior, changing the front and rear. Ivan Lepeshkin worked on the design. Although, as practice has shown, the rear of the sedan turned out to be heavily overloaded. Then this deficiency had to be corrected on the liftback and facelift modification. But Steve Mattin was already doing this.
In general, the development of Lada Granta was led by Vasily Batishchev.
On May 11, 2011, a new budget subcompact (B class) model of a passenger car was released at the Congress of the Union of Mechanical Engineers. Already on May 16, 2011, pre-production production of the four-door, five-seat subcompact sedan Lada Granta started. At the same time, the first generation Lada Kalina sedan simply left the market.
But design work continued. Everything that was invented and brought to working condition on the Lada Granta was decided to be used for the restyling of the first generation Lada Kalina. All this was pretentiously called the second generation and they even changed the in-plant index for the hatchback and station wagon. But this has already been talked about.
In October 2011, serial assembly of the Lada Granta sedan began. The model was offered in three trim levels - basic, minimum Standard, then came Norma and, from the beginning of 2012, top-end, maximum Luxury. The engines were native Tolyatti gasoline, naturally aspirated in-line fours with a volume of 1596 cm³ with multi-point injection distributed type injection, a timing belt, a cast iron block and an aluminum head, and an overhead-shaft arrangement.
In general, the following transversely mounted power units were used:
- VAZ-11183-50, eight-valve, single-cylinder SOHC, 82 hp. (60.6 kW);
- VAZ-11186 (sometimes there was a version with another piston Federal Mogul VAZ-21186), eight-valve, single-shaft SOHC, 87 hp. (64.2 kW);
- VAZ-21126, sixteen-valve, two-shaft DOHC, 98 hp. (72.2 kW);
- VAZ-21127, sixteen-valve, two-shaft DOHC, 106 hp. (78.2 kW).
The suspension is typical for the Gamma-1 platform. Traditionally, the front is independent, MacPherson struts, and the rear is a semi-independent torsion beam. The brakes are disc on the front wheels and drum on the rear. The steering, as noted above, is rack-and-pinion, and is equipped with power steering.
The gearbox is manual VAZ 2181, it is five-speed. This is our own development. Since 2012, the Japanese JATCO JF414E automatic transmission has also been installed. Modifications with a VAZ AMT 2182 five-speed robotic gearbox with an actuator from the German company ZF were also available.
Realizing that suppliers, as always, will begin to drive out defects, in order to improve the quality of the model, they entered into contracts with foreign suppliers of components. The new Lada Granta received parts from the French Valeo, German Bosch, Slovenian TPV Group and a number of other foreign companies. This should be taken into account if you need repairs to the Lada Grant and, accordingly, Grant spare parts.
In addition to the fact that work was carried out on the restyling, that is, the second generation of Lada Kalina, they also worked on modifications of the new budget model. Let's digress a little and talk about them in more detail. Namely, we are talking about sports, commercial and hybrid versions.
Hybrid modification
The development of a hybrid version of the Lada Granta began in 2012. In addition to AvtoVAZ, US took part in this project, and additionally the engineering company from the UK Ricardo. The prototype was prepared two years later, by 2014.
The hybrid power plant is called VAZ 21094. It consists of an 11 kW electric motor (it is built into the gearbox), as well as a gasoline, for a second, turbocharged power unit (all other VAZ engines are naturally aspirated) with a volume of 1.4 liters. This engine is a modernized version of the VAZ-11194 and has a power of 163 horses. The gearbox is robotic four-speed. The electric motor is powered by lithium-ion batteries with a total capacity of 5 kWh with the ability to charge from a regular household electrical network. The electric motor either recharges the battery or turns the transmission input shaft.
On electric power, such a Lada Granta can cover several tens of kilometers. Serial production of this modification is not yet included in the plans of AvtoVAZ PJSC.
Standard equipment
Model 1 is the basic configuration. It was assumed that with it Grant's car could be a worthy alternative to the classics taken off the production line. And so it happened. The price of the car in this configuration was to the taste of many car enthusiasts, while the range of options turned out to be quite modest.
The first thing that catches your eye when looking at the photo is the black bumpers. The car can be of any color. By saving on painting, the manufacturer is trying to make this model affordable. This doesn't bother owners too much, judging by the number of cars with unpainted bumpers on our roads.
Grant's standard engine also got the simplest one. It was inherited from Kalina, having undergone minor changes. It has a volume of 1600 cm³ and a power of 80 hp. s., which, of course, is not enough for a car that is somewhat heavier than its predecessor. The power unit has 2 valves for each cylinder, which has not been a feat of engineering for a long time, but this allowed the designers to achieve simplicity and reliability.
All Lada Granta cars of this configuration are equipped with a driver's airbag, which is already quite a lot for a low price category. You can also note the presence of an immobilizer and a rather nice function - a seat belt indication. Additional convenience during operation is provided by the reclining rear seat backrest.
Sports modification
If the hybrid version hasn’t worked out yet, then it’s quite possible to buy a Lada Granta with a sports modification. In 2011, it was presented to the public as part of the promotion of the Lada Granta as a new car from the Togliatti automaker. True, it was a combat racing car, and not a production version. It was used to participate in road racing. But already in 2012 in Moscow, at the international automobile show, a serial sports modification was demonstrated. It was called Lada Granta Sport (in Russian Lada Granta Sport). The development was carried out by a subsidiary of Lada Motor Sport Technologies. By the end of the year, small-scale production of the car was established. How is this modification different? It has a white and red “Sport” inscription printed on the trunk lid, a different shape of the front and rear bumpers (they have become more voluminous), and sills. A rear wing is installed on the trunk lid. Plus a different shape of sixteen-inch wheels. The model turned out to be dynamic.
A seven-inch display of a multimedia system with touch-type control has appeared in the cabin. The manual transmission lever and steering wheel are trimmed in leather with red stitching. The shape of the front driver and passenger seats has been changed. First of all, their lateral support has been significantly improved.
Plus, this model was produced in a luxury configuration, which means with full power accessories, air conditioning, two front airbags and an on-board computer, heated windshield and rear windows.
On the technical side. The gearbox was a five-speed manual. The chassis layout remained unchanged, but the suspension was slightly modified and the settings were changed. Larger brake discs were installed in the front brake mechanisms, and discs of a smaller diameter were used at the rear rather than drums. The tires were low-profile on 16-inch wheels, usually Yokohama. We also note the very short steering rack of 2.7 turns. There were two engines, both petrol naturally aspirated sixteen-valve overhead (DOHC) fours with a volume of 1596 cm³, one VAZ 21126, the other was installed from November 2016 to July 2022 only for the Drive Active package, this is the VAZ 21127 engine.
Changes to the exterior
AvtoVAZ hastened to declassify the appearance and photos of the updated Lada Granta even before the sedan's premiere scheduled for the last days of August as part of the Moscow Motor Show.
The most important thing that awaits the new Grant 2022 is the appearance of a signature design solution in the X-style, familiar to us from the current Vesta. The model received a radically redesigned front end: with a larger radiator grille, a new bumper and different head optics.
Turn signal indicators have now found their permanent place on the rear view mirror housings. As you can see in the photo, the sides of the body, unfortunately, lack the X-shaped stampings present on Vesta. The rear lights and bumper have undergone modifications: previously there was a place in the lower part for attaching a license plate, but now there is a place for it on the trunk lid. Thanks to the introduction of such changes, it was possible to visually reduce the “mass” of the stern of the new Granta. The line also received new original wheels.
New and old Lada Granta in one photo
The manufacturer does not provide any specific information about what the car will be like in terms of technical equipment. Currently, the model is produced with several modifications of the 1.6-liter power unit: 87-, 98-, 106- and 114-horsepower. The latter is intended for use in the sports version of Grants. All these engines are paired with a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission.
There is also no information about the price of the updated Lada Granta 2022 - such information, as well as data on possible configurations, will appear after the car’s premiere at MIAS 2018. Today, dealers offer sedans at prices starting from 410 thousand rubles, and the “charged” version will cost 155 thousand rubles more.
Commercial vehicle
Simultaneously with the development of the basic passenger model at the plant, more precisely at PJSC PSA VIS-AVTO, they were also working on a commercial version. In 2012 it was ready for mass production. Moreover, they made a two-door, two-seater base with a cargo platform, on which they placed a flatbed body 1860 mm long with various settings (a plastic cap is an additional option, although you can get by with an awning), an isothermal van (volume from 3.2 to 3.9 m³, it also differs in length - from 1830 to 2130 mm). This model received the in-plant index VIS-2349.
The main difference is in the suspension. They didn’t touch the front, independent, MacPherson struts, but the rear is a frame structure, an integrated frame frame with dependent leaf spring suspension. That is, a semi-frame design of increased rigidity. The carrying capacity of this mini truck is 720 kg.
The engine on this model is VAZ-11186, a gasoline in-line atmospheric eight-valve four with a volume of 1596 cm³ and 87 horses under the hood. Standard production engine.
The gearbox is also a standard five-speed manual. As for the interior, it is also standard and corresponds to the basic Standard configuration. That is, everything is to a minimum. An ordinary workhorse.
What's new in the interior?
The restyled Granta will begin to be equipped with a new dashboard, but no significant changes in technical equipment, in addition to new options for additional options, are expected. For example, last year it was reported that, for the first time for Lada models, the new Granta will begin to be equipped with VAZ’s proprietary remote monitoring system, thanks to which, using a smartphone, it will be possible to start the engine, turn on the headlights, control the opening of doors, and also monitor the condition of the car, including the charge value batteries, fuel level, mileage, etc.
Continuation of the story - liftback
In March 2013, they showed the Lada Granta liftback (in-house designation VAZ 2191), the second body type available for the first generation. On May 14, 2014, the model went into mass production. Its main difference was the presence of a fifth tailgate. In the exterior, in addition to the fact that the sedan and liftback differed in body, the five-door has a different front bumper (it is now painted in body color, with new air intakes and niches for fog lights), and the shape of the stern (and the number has moved to the trunk lid). The rear side passenger doors were also different. Plus other exterior mirrors with turn signal indicators.
On the technical side, the rigidity of the body has been increased, in particular the roof and floor, and we had to work on the middle spar and its reinforcements. Changes were made to the chassis (the suspension became stiffer) and the brake system, installing a new vacuum booster. We also worked on sound insulation and expanded the list of basic and additional options. And this was not a restyled version, but simply a new body type.
Finishing the conversation about modifications, it remains to note the Lada Granta LPG, this is a dual-fuel modification of the sedan and liftback with factory LPG.
In July 2022, production of all representatives of Lada Kalina 2 and Lada Granta was discontinued.
Innovations in the interior
The interior of any Grant now has a front panel from Kalina with revised decor of individual elements. Thus, the central rectangular deflectors have an X-shaped design, and the round side deflectors have a chrome edging. Other metamorphoses include changed button backlighting (from green to white), updated dashboard design (the scales now have orange rims, like Vesta’s), and a different pattern of decorative overlays on the panel.
New front panel of Lada Granta
The list of improvements does not end there. All variations of the 2018-2019 Lada Granta have seats with new upholstery and more developed lateral support bolsters. Also, the driver’s seat, albeit only in rich trim levels, is now equipped with a height adjustment mechanism that allows you to raise and lower the seat by 40 mm. The head restraints on the Grant seats have become larger and more comfortable.
Restyling
In August 2022, at the international motor show in Moscow, it was held from August 29 to September 9, they presented facelifted versions of the first generation Lada Granta liftback and sedan, as well as updated versions of the Lada Kalina 2 station wagon and hatchback, but now they are called Lada Granta station wagon and Lada Grant hatchback. Intra-factory indices have not changed.
The sedan went into production on August 14, 2022, the rest a little later.
The differences primarily lie in the exterior. We are talking about the corporate X style, characteristic stampings and an X-shaped front part. Plus a different shape of bumpers.
The Lada Granta sedan also received a modified rear. The number, like the liftback, was moved to the new trunk lid, and a small spoiler was invented. The dashboard was changed, and this also applies to the liftback, it is now like that of representatives of the Lada Kalina 2. An X-style deflector appeared on the center console. The shape of the parking brake lever has been changed.
There are few technical differences. The engine line is the same (only without the VAZ 11183-50), but the Federal Mogul piston group is different, “stickless”, the pistons have counterbores and now the valve does not bend if the timing belt breaks.
In manual and robotic gearboxes, the gear ratio has been changed, and the manual transmission also has a “Sport” mode.
The suspension has been slightly modified. A few minor bugs have also been fixed. The list of basic and additional options has been expanded.
The new Lada Granta has become more comfortable, handles better and has improved operating safety. Moreover, the price for the Lada Granta has changed slightly, and for the station wagon and hatchback it has even decreased.
On October 26, 2022, production of the updated VIS-2349, pickup truck and van began. The differences include a modified front part and a front bumper in body color. The gearbox is the same five-speed manual with a changed gear ratio of the main pair.
Photo of the interior of the new Grant sedan
The trunk was not damaged during the sedan update. The same incredible volume of 520 liters. With the rear seats folded, the manufacturer promises the ability to accommodate up to 815 liters of volume. Photos of the trunk are attached.

Plans
In the near future, we should expect the appearance of facelift modifications, first of all, we are talking about the station wagon and its pseudo-off-road version Cross (its mass production is planned for the first half of 2022). There should also be a sports version called Sport (factory workers are talking about this modification - we are working on it, but no one has seen it in 2022).
The plant plans to produce this restyled Lada Granta FL until 2021-2023. And then they think about producing a second generation. Work on it is underway, Vasily Batishchev, the same one who was responsible for the first generation, has been appointed chief engineer. The project manager is Olga Bazhanova, who at one time was involved in the Lada Priora family. It is known that the second generation will be built on a French trolley, a modernized Global Access platform. PJSC AvtoVAZ has lost its independence. The French said not to invent anything themselves anymore and that’s it. But there were glorious times before. Only Vesta, Niva (the second generation is already on the French car), and Granta remained on their original platform. There were attempts to do something. They tried to integrate the front part of the S platform into the good old Gamma platform. Cheap, cheerful, but it didn’t work out; the French owners are against it. Unification now rules the world.
