My question caused a slight hesitation for the AVTOVAZ representative, but he was immediately answered:

- Quality! We have reduced tolerances for our suppliers and thereby reduced the percentage of defective parts that end up on the assembly line.

The struggle for the quality of products at AVTOVAZ has been talked about since time immemorial, and in recent years a lot has really changed for the better. But it’s enough to read the forums and reviews of Lada owners to understand: Togliatti residents still have to work and work in this area. Especially when it comes to the Granta/Kalina family, which structurally belongs to the “old school” of the Kadannikov era. And the fact that this family has now been brought to a common denominator is reflected mainly in statistics: thanks to a wide range of models and an attractive price, Granta has become a leader in Russian sales, occupying 7.6% of the automobile market and 21% of the B-segment. Moreover, the artificial one-time surge caused by the unification of the model range turned into organic growth: in May the number of Granta buyers increased by 30%!

Of course, station wagons don’t make a difference here, but due to the release of the Cross version, their share in the Granta family should increase. It is expected to account for approximately half of the SW version's sales. And this is quite realistic, because taking into account the good standard equipment (already in the “base” there is a driver’s seat with a microlift, a climate system, as well as heating and electric mirrors), you will overpay for the “cross” package, which includes 15-inch two-tone alloy wheels, plastic protection around the perimeter of the body, roof rails and increased ground clearance to 198 mm is approximately 10 thousand rubles! Well, you can also pay 6 thousand for the fiery red metallic “Aurum”, developed by AVTOVAZ colorists specifically for the new product.

But what you can’t get for the Lada Granta Cross even for an additional payment is a stabilization system. Although ESP is available on any other version of Granta, they decided to make an exception for Cross: as plant representatives explained, this was done because Kalina Cross buyers practically did not order it. And the “off-road” version does not have a Jatco 4-speed automatic transmission: fans of automatic transmissions only have access to the AMT robotic transmission. Why? It's all about the price: the automatic machine is almost three times more expensive than the robot, and in this price segment this is critical. But we will try the AMT as a “dessert” - after the version with conventional mechanics, which was chosen by 85% of Kalina Cross buyers.

From the front, the Lada Granta Cross looks like a Granta, but from any other angle and inside it is still the same Kalina. And the fact that “she was not young” is felt already when sitting in the driver’s seat. In terms of ergonomics, the new product is much inferior to Vesta. It is clear that these are cars of different classes and eras, but we still have to look for such an uncomfortable seating position as in the Grant. However, it was uncomfortable for me, with a height of 186 cm, but my not so tall colleague behind the wheel turned out to be quite comfortable - the lack of adjustment of the steering column for reach did not bother him at all. The foam padding of the seats is new, but it does not provide the desired rigidity or feeling of lateral support. But when you sit back, the soft backrests are easily crushed by your knees, and even with a modest amount of legroom, it’s not a problem for a tall person to fit “behind himself.”

The main inconvenience is tap-dancing on the pedals: the 106-horsepower engine loves high speeds, and in order not to fall out of the flow, it must be constantly kept in good shape. There are no questions about shifting gears - the lever moves easily and is clearly fixed in the desired positions. The clutch has a long travel, but getting used to it is not a problem. It is more difficult to adapt to the brakes, which “grab” quite sharply at the very end of the pedal stroke. By the standards of the budget segment, relatively little extraneous noise penetrates into the cabin: the noise from stones and sand flying from a dirt road is dampened by soft pile linings on the wheel arches. Well, the suspension deserves the highest praise. Not a single classmate can smooth out road imperfections like that! At the same time, the car is not rolly and in character resembles a sports version rather than a pseudo-SUV. I would also like to adjust the steering wheel, making a clearer “zero”...

There is no standard navigator here, but any smartphone will perfectly replace it. From the glove compartment, the USB connector moved to a more familiar place - on the front panel of the radio.

Now I’m riding the Granta Cross with a robot. The AMT here, like other Grants, comes with firmware 2.0, with which AVTOVAZ cured all “childhood diseases” and also added new transmission operating modes. In addition to the sport mode, which is activated by a button on the center console, there is a “city” mode that is turned on by default (with it the car can move away without pressing the gas pedal - just release the brake) and a “winter” mode (when starting with the wheels slipping, it automatically engages second gear ). Having experience with robotic boxes, I was skeptical, but from the first kilometers, skepticism gave way to delight.

The robot with firmware 2.0 works very quickly. By the way, you can also reflash old AMTs.

I have never seen such nimble robots (DSG and similar transmissions with two clutches do not count)! The automatic changed gears no slower than if I had done it myself, but it switched to the desired gear in the optimal speed range, without over-revving the engine and preventing torque starvation. Of course, there are still small bites when changing gears, but they are not so critical that they would be worth focusing on. And in the “sport” mode, when the gears are shifted downwards with over-throttle (!), they are practically not felt at all. At the same time, it feels like a Granta with AMT is faster than the same car with a manual transmission. And quieter. Well, there’s one more plus - with a two-pedal configuration, your feet can be positioned more comfortably.

So, AVTOVAZ finally managed to make a normal car, which has no complaints about either the chassis or the operation of the transmission? Almost. There really are no complaints about the above components, but the build quality still leaves much to be desired. Each test car drove differently. At the same time, on our “Grant” there was a bug with the door switch, the unreliable contact of which caused the lamp and the pictogram about open doors on the instrument panel to blink. It seems like a small thing, but to see this on a new car worth half a million rubles is, to put it mildly, unpleasant.

Manufacturer's pricing policy

Prices for Lada Granta Cross start at 555 thousand rubles. For this money, the buyer will receive a cross-station wagon with an 8-valve engine in the Classic configuration with one airbag, air conditioning, anti-lock brakes, audio system, heated mirrors and front electric windows. In comparison with a regular “Granta” station wagon with similar equipment, the overpayment will be 33.5 thousand rubles. The Comfort version with a 16-valve engine will cost at least 593 thousand rubles (+36.5 thousand), and the same version with the AMT robot will cost another 25 thousand rubles more. However, even the most equipped test Granta Cross in the Luxe version with two pedals for 644 thousand rubles does not have a stabilization system. Over five years, the Togliatti cross-station wagon has risen in price by more than a third, but the model still has no competitors: the all-terrain version of Vesta is more modern, but 225-283 thousand rubles more expensive - a whole abyss by the standards of the class. You will have to overpay at least 100 thousand for the utilitarian Largus Cross station wagon, so VAZ’s new product has every chance of becoming the best-selling model in the line. PS While exchanging cars with test-drive colleagues, we were unpleasantly surprised by the difference in driving impressions from seemingly identical cars. “Grant Cross” from the same batch demonstrate different smoothness, handling and even ease of driving! The opinion about the promising model is blurred due to the lack of proper control over the quality of parts and the plant needs to seriously work with suppliers to eliminate this shortcoming.

The fact that cars, in addition to their pleasant appearance, gradually began to acquire more and more comfortable interiors with a minimum of ergonomic errors, that quite modern devices began to appear in the list of equipment, such as ESP with a shutdown button, a hill start assist system, impulse “ turn signals, light and rain sensors...

But the design of the panel in front of the driver and front passenger, in my opinion, was unnecessarily decorated. I understand that today if you paint it, you won’t sell it, and yet I vote for maximum restraint and functionality in car interior design. In my opinion, it would have been better to think about how to make the information on the display more readable. Now, on a bright sunny day, the characters on this screen are almost invisible.

The same applies to the instrument cluster. The speedometer and tachometer have orange borders; you can “read” them in any lighting. But the on-board computer display with white symbols on a black background fades greatly in daylight. Only in the shadows and darkness are the symbols clearly visible.

The plastic trim looks hard and doesn't try to imitate softness. Maybe it was just my imagination, but last fall the showrooms of the Grant test vehicles were perceived as much more “explosive” than now. Despite the fact that the roads in the vicinity of Tolyatti and in the Krasnodar Territory are similar in quality, this quality is very modest. Has sound insulation been improved? AvtoVAZ technical employees responded this way: in the fall we could drive cars from the first production batches of the updated Granta; probably, not all technologies were fully developed for them.

Now everything has been worked out - and worked out conscientiously. "Granta Cross" is relatively "quiet" on roads of almost any quality. If you compare it with its “relatives”, the interior of the Lada Xray is even quieter. But the difference is not in its favor: while driving, at speeds over 120 km/h, the Xray begins to hum monotonously. Granta Cross with a motor of the same parameters does not produce this kind of noise. My colleague and I accelerated the car to higher speeds.

Now about the technology. Granta Cross will be equipped with two types of engines and two gearboxes. Engine options are 8- and 16-valve with the same displacement of 1.6 liters. Power is 87 and 106 hp, respectively. With. We were given only 106-horsepower cars for testing, but with two types of transmission: manual and AMT robot (the 87-horsepower engine cannot be combined with AMT).

On the highways, the dynamics of the 106-horsepower version are not very pleasing. Acceleration from 80 to 100 km/h in fourth gear takes about 15 seconds. But, however, when the air conditioner is on, and here it noticeably absorbs “energy”. But the car handles the high-speed straight line properly and does not yaw at all. It clings to the asphalt and in turns. Although my racing enthusiast colleague is suspicious of the stock Pirelli tires (he prefers Bridgestone), I think the tires are good. For hard surfaces.

But, of course, we don’t limit ourselves to hard surfaces. The route takes us either to the shore of the Kuban Sea or to a mountain cliff. The views are fantastic, Adygea is very much worth a tourist visit. And "Granta Cross" - trips along the "intersection". The suspension can withstand even outright abuse and does not break through. It’s a pity that you won’t be able to dive completely into the waters of the Kuban Sea; the car does not and will not have all-wheel drive. There are no plans to install even a self-locking cross-axle differential on it. It's simple: the manufacturer is trying to maintain the lowest possible price.
