The corrugation rattles on the Lada Grant after removing the catalyst

According to forums on the Internet, many owners of Lada Granta and Lada Kalina complain about the noise of the exhaust system at low speeds or when the car is idling. Often this problem is not related to a malfunction of the system itself, as one might think, the whole point is the lack of high-quality vibration damping throughout the entire path and reliable fixation. People's ingenuity does not stand still and there are a number of ways to solve this problem, from those that will cost absolutely nothing to serious intervention in the exhaust system. Which method you choose is up to you.

The most expensive method is to replace the muffler corrugation with a larger one. Initially, the standard exhaust tract of Granta and Kalina has a corrugation running immediately after the catalytic converter, but its size is not large and it cannot cope with the vibration that comes to it. The solution to this problem is to install a 250mm long corrugation. We drive the car onto a pit, overpass or lift. Using a “13” wrench, unscrew the three nuts securing the exhaust pipe to the catalytic converter flange. We advise you to buy a set of new nuts and a replacement gasket in advance.

Using a “13” wrench or a socket of a similar size, unscrew the clamp securing the rear part of the exhaust tract.

We remove the muffler from the rubber hangers and mark the places for installing a new corrugation. The old corrugation will have to be cut off.

We weld a new corrugation. Pay special attention to the weld, because if there are holes in it, the exhaust system will begin to “sniff” and will soon burn out at the location of the hole. To reliably protect the weld, paint it with a heat-resistant primer and cover it with a similar sealant that is resistant to high temperatures.

Reinstall the exhaust tract and install a new gasket. Replacing the corrugation is a guaranteed way to get rid of exhaust noise, but it is also the most expensive and labor-intensive method.

The next method in terms of cost and time is to tie the standard corrugation with steel clamps. Purchase two or three screw clamps measuring 60*80 and install them according to the attached photo.

Thanks for subscribing!

Tightening the corrugation with clamps will increase the rigidity of the connection and will not transmit vibration to the muffler resonator, which produces unpleasant sounds. The essence of the task is simple, but note that this method does not help all, but only some car owners. Despite this, due to the low cost of the required materials, as well as the short time required to complete the work, it is worth trying.

Finally, the easiest and cheapest way is to use a nylon tie to tighten the mounting hook for the rear muffler can and the rubber fasteners that go to the car body. Such a modification also increases the rigidity of the entire system and prevents the resonator from vibrating excessively, producing extraneous noise.

If your car has the above-mentioned problem, do not rush to pick up an angle grinder and welding, try first using the second and third methods, maybe they will help you.

The corrugation rattles on the Lada Grant after removing the catalyst

We will fix the problem after removing the catalyst on the Lada Grant. A spider was put in its place. At first everything was fine, but problems arose. After a couple of days, the corrugation began to rattle, since it is not intended to work after the “cat” has been removed.

The sounds of gases used to be dampened by a catalyst, which is no longer available. A spacer was installed for the 4-2-1 spider, the gases now forcefully hit the corrugation. Its mesh rubs and creates a disgusting nasty sound.

I tried to tighten the corrugation with wire, but this did not solve the problem. When the engine is not warmed up, the sound is unpleasant.

I did a similar procedure on a Lada Vesta, and there were still some nasty sounds - the corrugation was rattling.

How to weld correctly

First you need to weld 1 end, which goes to the manifold (spider). Then hang the pipe in place to weld it evenly.

Now let’s fix the resonator, fix it by welding so that everything is smooth. Then scald as needed. We boiled the corrugation, this is how it looks when welded.

Looks like a factory one. I hope that after checking all the vibrations and squeaks will disappear.

Do not forget that after installing the spider or flame arrester, you need to tighten the exhaust pipe fastening 2 times. The second time is better to delay the next day.

Why is the muffler loud?

Good day everyone. The problem is this. The car roars loudly when you press the gas to the floor. If you accelerate slowly, then the silencers work normally and quietly. And it roars in the engine area. The rear and middle parts do not cut through the new ones. I changed the exhaust pipe a year ago for the same reason, I thought it was finished. The fault was with the exhaust manifold, today I changed it and the gaskets, the situation has not changed. Engine 1.5 8V without absorber and oxygen sensor. Does anyone in the exhaust understand what could be the reason? Maybe all the gaskets need to be sealed?

One fine evening the muffler began to work a little louder again, a day later the exhaust pipe, which was already after the can, broke off. Before the jar, I cooked the pipe in the fall. There is no longer any desire to cook anymore. I decided to take a new jar, because I think the old one had simply rotted. I took a jar from Nizhny Novgorod, for only 800 rubles.

The seller explained everything clearly to me that there is also a DRT, it costs 600, but there is ALREADY one pipe hanging out. Such are the things. On the market they sold bullshit for the same money, as I understand it, they don’t look at quality there. I drove for 4 days, there was no change the whole time.

Checked the result

In fact, the nasty sounds were made by the weak standard corrugation. Therefore, after removing the “cat” and installing the spacer, two conclusions can be drawn.

They apply to any machine:

  1. If you install a spider without a flame arrester, reducing the temperature and gas pressure on the exhaust system, then you need to immediately weld the corrugation. It is inexpensive - a good reinforced corrugation will cost you from 500 to 800 rubles, depending on the size. It makes no sounds, the exhaust is stock. No unwanted extraneous sounds or vibrations are heard.
  2. Pull the connection between the spider and the resonator 2 times, otherwise there will be cutting and smell in the cabin. In a couple of days you will have to visit a car service center and renew it again. Every day the corrugation will become loose and rattle.

If you follow these tips after removing the catalyst on the Lada Grant, then everything will be fine. Acceleration and dynamics will improve. But you must understand that the car is void of warranty and harms the environment. Sometimes there will still be a smell in the cabin. Whether to remove the catalyst or not is up to you. I’m just talking about the subtleties that need to be taken into account right away.

Subscribe, write your comments, how you removed the catalyst, what happened. Good luck to all!

Do-it-yourself muffler corrugation replacement

Repair and replacement of muffler corrugations are part of the basic services that are provided by almost all service stations. In reality, repairing the muffler corrugation is its replacement, since there is no point in restoring the part. During long-term use, the element burns out, its restoration is ineffective and labor-intensive. Only temporary repairs make sense. Violation of the integrity of the corrugation due to damage is rarely diagnosed; the way to solve the problem is replacement. Changing a part is easy; a welding installation is desirable, but not required.

Muffler corrugation - what is it?

The corrugation in the muffler is the most important element for removing exhaust gases from the combustion system. It has the form of a corrugated flexible element, alloy steel is used as the base, and a metal mesh is installed on top.

The corrugation in the muffler is the most important element for removing exhaust gases from the combustion system

Many have noticed that when the engine starts, a rattling sound appears from the power plant, which transmits vibration to the muffler. Such influences can seriously compromise the integrity of the gas removal system. The muffler is less susceptible to wear; if you install a corrugation, it dampens vibration shocks and protects the muffler.

On most modern cars, a corrugation is installed; it acts as an elastic connection between the power plant and the gas exhaust system.

Repairing the muffler and replacing the corrugation is most often carried out when elements fail or during regular maintenance, if the percentage of wear does not allow the car to be used until the next inspection. Sometimes they install a “glushak” on their car for tuning.

Consequences of corrugation damage

If the corrugation is damaged, gases will begin to leak before they enter the catalyst and resonator, that is, completely unpurified substances will enter the air. Atmospheric pollution increases many times over; if you stay nearby for a long time, you can feel a deterioration in your health.

The bigger problem is the penetration of gases into the car interior; no one would want to drive such a car. The corrugation is located slightly below the engine with an indent towards the center of the car. There are air intake ducts located near the unit, through which gases will likely enter the cabin. Poisoning is unlikely to occur, but comfort will be significantly reduced. If the failure occurs on the road, it is recommended to perform a temporary repair of the muffler corrugation at the nearest station, which will require welding.

When does the reason lie in the cylinder-piston group?

If the cylinders are destroyed or compression rings occur, then part of the energy of the explosion of the mixture in the cylinder will be directed directly into the crankcase along with the exhaust gases, which will create excess pressure in it. But in this case, the corresponding accompanying signs of such a malfunction will be observed:

  • difficult engine starting;
  • its unstable operation at idle;
  • reduction in engine power;
  • compression in the cylinders is lower than stated by the manufacturer;
  • exhaust smoke;
  • other.

In this case, you will have to contact specialists so that they can carry out additional diagnostics of the engine and, if the preliminary diagnosis is confirmed, carry out the necessary repairs. But this should be done only after all other methods of eliminating oil from getting into the pipe have been checked and tried. If they help, then it is possible that not everything is so bad with the engine and it only needs to be given much less attention and care than it seems at first glance.

What reasons?

There are few reasons why it is necessary to replace the muffler corrugation without welding: natural wear of the material, the passage of gases or mechanical damage. The following reasons can lead to such conditions:

  • catalyst damage. If it becomes clogged, thermoregulation disturbances will occur, and during overheating, increased pressure is created in the corrugation;
  • significant wear of the shock absorber pads on the power unit. The fasteners of the muffler itself are not able to provide sufficient movement of the unit;
  • deformations due to impacts on the surface;
  • incorrect installation of the device;
  • the destructive effects of chemicals that are sprinkled on roads in winter;
  • use of additives to increase the octane number in gasoline.

Replacing the muffler corrugation with your own hands will be required after preliminary diagnosis of the condition of the unit. Initially, failure is determined by the presence of noise during movement. If the element is completely destroyed, there is a risk of a strong deafening sound. Indirect evidence that the corrugated connection needs to be replaced is the presence of a characteristic odor from gases inside the cabin.

If you have enough driving experience, you can determine the malfunction by a significant decrease in the car’s power. The greatest reduction is observed in modern vehicles. The reason for the drop in performance is a malfunction of the oxygen sensor, which is included in the exhaust system.

In each case, you will need to replace the muffler corrugation with your own hands without welding or with it, this will help prevent further damage.

Eliminating the causes leading to the appearance of oil in the pipe

Factors leading to an increase in crankcase gas pressure and, as a consequence, to the appearance of oil in the air filter duct were discussed above. The first of these is a high level of lubricating fluid in the engine crankcase. When the oil is above the maximum level, the internal free volume of the crankcase decreases, which leads to an increase in pressure in it. In this case, it is necessary to drain the excess and subsequently try to maintain the engine lubrication level in the middle between the MAX and MIN marks on the dipstick.

Choosing the right corrugation

The muffler corrugation is often replaced and sold at a service station, but you can buy the component at a car dealership. If the owner has the time or desire to carry out repairs on his own, he should initially purchase corrugation. The part is not unified; it is developed individually for most cars. The differences are the dimensions. Before going for the unit, you will need to clarify the size of the element; it is better to find out experimentally - from the pit. Before replacement, it is worth restoring the corrugation and doing the work within the next few days.

When taking measurements, it should be taken into account that you will have to cut the corrugation somewhat further than the weld on which it is fixed. New elements are sold with a slightly reduced diameter for stronger fixation and easier scalding. The corrugation is inserted 3 cm into the pipe, this facilitates repeated replacement of the element on the car without structural changes.

After measuring the length, the diameter is measured. Accurate numbers can only be obtained with a caliper. With known parameters, go to the store or market.

Exhaust system corrugation options:

  • Two-layer or corrugated with 2 braids. A more “long-lasting” option, used in cars with gasoline and diesel engines. The inner braid directly protects the corrugation itself from damage, and the outer braid helps to avoid excessive compression and vibrations, that is, it protects against breakage.
  • Three-layer. It is used in vehicles with both gasoline and diesel engines. The third layer is an additional braid made from a flexible pipe, which makes the corrugation more durable and rigid, resistant to damage. And also much quieter for the passengers of your car!
  • Four-layer. It has an “interlock” design, that is, “internal locking”. This corrugation is a reinforced structure made of steel plates in the form of a flexible but durable metal sleeve. Thanks to reinforcement, it lasts 2-3 times longer than conventional samples. We usually recommend such corrugations for installation; they are a little more expensive, but their quality is excellent!
  • Reinforced. The muffler corrugation is reinforced. Used in extremely harsh operating conditions, for sports and/or racing cars. The flexible and durable design with stronger elements allows you to dampen detonation, withstand constant twisting and overcome other powerful loads.

Muffler corrugation: selection by size.

Selection of muffler corrugations according to the car make. You call our car service center, tell us the make and model of your car, we answer whether we have the corrugation you need, describe their range, tell us about their differences and tell you how much they cost.

For example... The corrugation for an Oka car most likely will not suit a Toyota and vice versa, although this also happens in some cases when their sizes coincide. To independently select the required part, you need to know some parameters of your vehicle, namely: the dimensions of the exhaust system, the elasticity of the old corrugation, the fit diameter... etc.

  • The muffler corrugation is a sealed pipe, and in fact, a disposable part; having lost its seal, it requires complete replacement if there is serious damage, without any repairs or “tampering” in a neighbor’s garage. The corrugation is elastic and is in a state of constant vibration and movement, so after repairing its flexible part it lasts very little. But if there are problems with the connection between the exhaust system pipe and the corrugation itself, then you can simply digest the connection and everything will be fine. Therefore, you need to either understand the essence of the issue in detail or seek advice from professionals. Moreover, corrugation is not such an expensive element, although it performs such an important function in the exhaust system of a car.

Replacing corrugations with your own hands

Previously, corrugation was a hard-to-find element that was sold separately only for foreign cars; today the market offers spare parts for all types of cars and manufacturers. More often, installation is carried out by specialists using a professional welding machine and other tools. The difficulty lies in the need to determine and select the temperature regime.

If the hand is “stuffed” and the person knows how to work with a power tool, the replacement is carried out in several stages:

  • Dismantling. Using a grinder, the worn corrugation is cut off.
  • Installation. Installation of a new part.
  • Cleaning seams.

Incorrect installation will only temporarily help get rid of problems; the service life of the corrugation will be significantly reduced. It is preferable to leave the operation to specialists, but the task can also be done manually.

Preparation

There are a number of recommendations for quality preparation:

  • The work will be somewhat easier if you completely dismantle the muffler pipe with corrugation;
  • “grinder” cut off the knot at the weld or near it;
  • Trying on the part will help identify possible difficulties in installation and determine that the part really fits. A preliminary assessment will prevent distortions in the structure and protect the spare part from excessive load and premature failure. There is no need to install a corrugated connection at the fitting stage;
  • After selecting the location, the parts are grabbed at several points to the inlet pipe. Now the whole pipe is removed.

Replacing corrugations with your own hands

Welding

If there is a semi-automatic welding device, there is no need for a service station at all. When there is no equipment, an inverter type is suitable; 1.6–2 mm electrodes are installed in it.

Basic advice from professionals on stages:

  • Before work is carried out, the pipe, especially the seam area, is thoroughly cleaned.
  • Welding is carried out with a minimum current. The value is selected taking into account the electrode. During operation, the slag is removed.
  • Once completed, the welded areas are treated with a protective coating or sealant to prevent corrosion.

The manufacturer does not provide for the use of a standard welding device during the procedure, and given the thinness of the sheet, there is a high risk of burning through the metal. It is recommended to practice in advance on a metal sheet of this thickness. Often a tin can is used as a test; it makes it easy to determine the tightness of the created seam. If the test result is positive, you should start working. Otherwise, it is better to continue training until a high-quality seam is created.

Replacing corrugations using welding

Despite the complexity of working with an inverter device, the task is feasible, but it will require skills. At the end of the work, the pipe is put back in place, and the flanges are changed during the installation process.

No welding

An attractive option for owners is to repair the muffler corrugation with your own hands without welding. It is not always an appropriate installation option, but sometimes it is recommended to eliminate welding. An effective and reliable method without the use of welding has become widespread among the people - the method of creating threads.

The process is carried out in steps:

  • The cut is made using a grinder.
  • A new corrugation is installed in place of the old unit.
  • In the place of the rings and pipes, holes with a diameter of up to 6 mm are drilled. The number of bolts is 6–8 pieces for a standard car, depending on the diameter of the pipe.
  • Using a tap, apply the thread.
  • All collapsible parts are covered with sealant: bolts and joints between the corrugation and the pipe.
  • Install corrugation.

The connection is quite reliable and completely sealed.

Temporary repairs

There is an old method to temporarily repair corrugation using a bandage. To defer for 1 month, you will need a thick elastic bandage. The work is carried out from the pit, since it will be necessary to heat the epoxy resin and treat the element with it. The damaged area is covered with a bandage, and resin is poured over the bandage.

This procedure will last for 1 month or less, then even greater damage will appear. It is preferable to replace the corrugation within a few days or weeks.
