The design and technical specifications are changing. Over the entire period of its existence, more than a million cars were produced. They were produced in different colors and bodies. Now you can buy Lada Kalina in station wagon and hatchback body styles. In today's article we will take a closer look at why our car owners liked this car.

Design

The car looks very impressive. If you remove the brand emblem from the radiator grill, the Lada Kalina can really be confused with a foreign car. Especially in the Lime color. Although the platform that served as the basis for the car is entirely a Russian development. Body dimensions have remained virtually unchanged for more than 10 years. If we consider the Lada Kalina hatchback, its length is 385 cm, width – 170, height – 1500. In the station wagon body, the car has “gained weight” by 19 centimeters. Those who prioritize a large trunk volume should pay attention to the station wagon. The hatchback is already a more youthful version. It looks very dynamic, especially on alloy wheels. But they only come as a complete set. The ground clearance of the car is 16 and 18 centimeters for the hatchback and station wagon, respectively. The short wheelbase makes it easy to maneuver in traffic and to park without any problems if there are no free spaces.

The design of the car turned out to be very modern. And although only the bumper, grille and headlights are among the changes, the updated Lada Kalina 2016 looks much more impressive than its predecessor. The optics deserve special attention. The headlights here are lensed, and in the bumper, in addition to fog lights, there are daytime running lights. They come already in the basic configuration. Arches and moldings can be in body color.

By the way, the arches have become more muscular compared to the previous Kalina. It would seem that 15 inches is enough for such a car (meaning the wheels). But even they look small on the 65 tire profile. This gives the future owner great potential for tuning. But there is also a “Sport” modification. There are already 16-inch cast, spoked wheels. They look very impressive.

Interior

So let's move inside the car. Thanks to the wide-opening doors, getting into the car is very comfortable. The seats have good lateral support and are moderately hard. The ceiling height is enough for even a two-meter driver to sit behind the wheel.

The instrument panel is built according to all European canons. It is worth noting the convenient location of the buttons on the center console and steering column switches. The Lada Kalina 2016 is fully equipped with a multimedia system with a large touch screen in the middle. The salon is very cozy. Visibility of the car is excellent. The finishing materials are made well. They do not rattle when moving, as was the case in the first versions of Kalina.

The steering wheel has small slots for a more comfortable grip. The instrument panel is made in the form of two wells with speedometer and tachometer scales. There is also an on-board computer. Previously, VAZ owners could not even dream about it. Now this option is already available in the basic configuration of the Lada Kalina 2016. The finishing of the door panels deserves respect. The stitching is done very well, the gaps are all in place. When moving, it does not fall off or squeak.

Noise insulation at a high level. Control buttons for power windows and mirrors are conveniently located on the door handle. By the way, some production cars are even equipped with heated seats. But we'll talk about the configurations a little later. In the meantime, let's take a look under the hood of the Lada Kalina hatchback.

"Priora" or "Kalina": classification problems

The word “problem” will generally accompany us throughout the text, and it begins already when determining what is in front of us.

Formally, Kalina is a European B-class, Priora is closer to a C-class. In fact, the difference in dimensions is nominal:

• top-end Kalina station wagon - 4.11 m in length;
• Priora with the same body type - 4.21 m.

At the same time, it is absolutely unclear where the extra decimeter of space went.

In terms of the amount of space in the cabin, it is also unclear which class is which: low seating, minimal gap between the rows of seats - in both cars only short and hardy people can sit in the back for a long time. That is, Mongolian steppe riders.

And it’s even funnier that in both Kalina and Priora, the body type has almost no effect on anything. It’s usually the same: a sedan has a spacious, but most inconvenient trunk, a station wagon is the opposite: it has the maximum displacement and ease of use.

What about LADA? The trunk of a station wagon is not the most spacious, but the most spacious is that of the Granta co-platform liftback (after restyling, this became one family, which makes it even funnier).

The Priora has no difference at all in terms of practicality between body types: both the liftback and the station wagon have 360 ​​liters each behind the rear sofa.

In short, the difference is purely aesthetic. There is no point in looking for a “Kalina station wagon” or a “Priora station wagon” in the hope of seeing space and capacity there.

Technical part

There are three types of power units for this car. All of them are gasoline. The weakest in the line is the 1.5-liter eight-valve engine with 80 horsepower, which migrated here from the “tens”. Despite such low power, this unit is capable of accelerating the car to 170 kilometers per hour. The engine is designed to meet Euro-3 emission standards. Torque is 120 Nm.

Next in the line is an in-line four-cylinder unit with 89 horsepower. Despite such a small displacement of 1400 cubic meters, the engineers managed to get 127 Nm of torque from this engine. The car takes the first hundred faster than the previous one, but at maximum speed it lags behind by 5 kilometers per hour. Thanks to the use of distributed injection, engineers managed to reduce consumption to 7 liters per 100 kilometers in mixed operating mode.

And our line is completed by a 98-horsepower gasoline unit with a volume of 1599 cubic meters. This is a gearbox with an in-line arrangement of cylinders. There are four of them here, as in other modifications. The peak torque of the unit is 145 Nm, which is an order of magnitude higher than that of the 80-horsepower engine. The maximum speed of the car is 190 kilometers per hour. Despite the large volume, the fuel consumption of this engine is not much different from its predecessors. In average mode, Lada Kalina 1.6 consumes 7.2 liters per hundred kilometers.

If we consider the transmission, Kalina uses two types of gearboxes. The first is the familiar “mechanics”, and the second is a robotic AMT. It was developed jointly with German engineers. The mechanics have hardly changed over the 12 years of its existence. But a few years ago, AvtoVAZ engineers switched to a cable drive. This made it possible to reduce the wear of rubbing parts and increase the service life of the box as a whole. The gears no longer “walk” as before, but you can turn them on with two fingers. This is a great success. Finally, the car began to meet European standards. But the developers did not decide to stop there.

Safety

The serial Lada Kalina was modified not only in the technical part. A beautiful and dynamic car must meet all safety standards. So, AvtoVAZ engineers modified the car body by installing additional bars in the doors. This saves your chances in a side collision. The frame itself is made of stronger sheets of steel. They did not forget about active safety. Thus, already in the basic configuration, the car is equipped with a brake force distribution system and directional stability stabilization.

The latter was developed and implemented thanks to close cooperation with. Now the car has become more maneuverable and predictable to drive. And since the laws of the Russian Federation do not allow driving a car without DRLs, they are already included “in the database.” Belts with pretensioners are equipped with electronic sensors that will sound an alarm if the driver is not fastened and begins to drive. Unfortunately, there are no side ones even in the top version.

Appearance

The exterior, it must be admitted, has not undergone radical changes. However, the body is equipped with new design skirts on the sides. They are made of plastic, but this has not reduced their reliability in any way, since the material was used of the highest quality - it is extremely resistant to mechanical damage.

However, the updated Kalina has a noticeable increase in plastic elements on the external surfaces. It is definitely difficult to consider this as an advantage or disadvantage. Therefore, each buyer will decide in his own time whether he likes it or not. The rear doors now have nameplates that are purely decorative. In addition, there are fasteners mounted on the roof that will allow you to transport small luggage there if necessary.

In general, the hatchback, as well as other models, now having a fairly high ground clearance, is increasingly reminiscent of an SUV and can easily drive not only on roads, but also over rough terrain.

In any case, the general trend is being monitored - the designers of the Volzhsky Automobile Plant are gradually turning Kalina into a quite high-quality, and what is important - budget crossover. In particular, the design was changed:

• pendants;
• chassis;
• shock absorbers.

It is difficult to say with certainty how this transformation will end, but there is every reason to be cautiously optimistic.

The high ground clearance, among other things, gave Kalina a completely new look. She now looks noticeably more aggressive. Such metamorphoses will certainly appeal to fans of SUVs. This and its relatively low cost make this model noticeably more attractive. In addition, it is possible to choose either front- or rear-wheel drive at your discretion.

Equipment Standard

This is the basic version of the hatchback. It offers an on-board computer, child seat mounts, ABS, EBD, and electric power steering. There is no radio here - only audio preparation. The front windows are equipped with an electric drive. The side mirrors are manually adjustable. The wheels here are 14 inches, with decorative caps. There is a full-size spare wheel. There is no air conditioning. The gearbox is a five-speed manual only. You can buy a Lada Kalina 2016 in the Standard configuration for 386 thousand rubles.

Lux

This is the maximum configuration of the Lada Kalina 2016. This includes a second airbag, fog lights (lensed), alarm, central locking, immobilizer with remote control, and a light sensor. There are parking sensors, heated rear and windshields, power mirrors and an audio system with radio. Unfortunately, this version does not have a touch screen on the panel. The cost of the Lux modification is 486 thousand rubles.

Luxury Navigation

Here, unlike the previous one, there is a full power package and multimedia with a touchscreen. The radio supports wireless communication via Bluetooth. The Navigation features 15-inch alloy wheels and a full-size stamped spare tire. Mirrors and floorings are painted in body color. Instead of an air conditioner, a climate system is installed here.
