What did you get?

In fact, the new Kalina is an improved version of the well-known Granta. It is better in terms of the quality of materials used, sound insulation and installed engines. At the same time, much is taken from its predecessor, which can be seen even from the photo of the Lada Kalina. The hatchback, for example, borrowed the Jatco gearbox, previously used for the same Granta, and practically the same interior and seats. But progress is obvious.

The model was released under the slogan “complete stuffing”. By this phrase, marketers meant, first of all, new multimedia (available in expensive trim levels) with slots for SD cards and USB flash drives, but without a CD player. To control it, there is a block of buttons located on the center console and a touch screen. The radio can also work in conjunction with a navigator. But the system has not been developed to the required level and does not work well in certain models, as demonstrated during test drives of pre-production versions of the car.

Exterior

The gear shift pattern on a manual transmission has changed. Previously, reverse gear was engaged by moving to the left and up, but now it is opposite the fifth speed. A special lock will prevent you from mistakenly engaging a sixth gear that does not exist. A cup holder installed in front of the gearshift lever is an erroneous decision from an ergonomic point of view. If you put a 0.5 liter bottle in it, then when switching odd speeds the driver will rest his hand on it.

The absence of vibrations on the gearshift lever, reduced strokes and easy gear shifting - this is the new transmission on the Kalina car (hatchback). The characteristics of the engines working together with it are relatively weak, but they are enough for confident driving.

The car is equipped with 1.6-liter engines with a power of 87 (eight-valve from Federal Modul) and 106 hp. (an updated 16-valve version, previously installed on the Grant with a power of 98 hp).

The second engine will leave a mixed impression. The fact is that with it the dynamics of the car have remained virtually unchanged, but the transport tax will be significantly higher. In addition, only car owners who are familiar with the latter first-hand will be able to appreciate its advantages over the 98-horsepower engine. The engine picks up better at low speeds, but this is almost not noticeable. The best option, according to experts, is a combination of a 98-horsepower version with an automatic transmission.

Initially, models with automatic transmission were produced in small quantities, but over time their share increased to 20% of total production. Note that the driver has the ability to “lock” the gearbox so that it does not shift above a certain level (first or second). The Jatco automatic transmission has a service life of 10 years. Warranty period - 3 years or 50,000 km.

If on foreign-made cars it is usually impossible to change the position of the automatic transmission selector without squeezing the brake, then in the new Kalina car (hatchback) this can be done. However, according to owner reviews, it is not safe.

Control

Poor maneuverability, insufficiently informative steering wheel and lack of dynamics are the driving qualities of the previous car. Engineers had to work hard to significantly improve the driving performance of the model. The old steering rack was shortened, a Korean electric power steering was added and the rigidity of the mechanism as a whole was changed. Technical part

There are three types of power units for this car. All of them are gasoline. The weakest in the line is the 1.5-liter eight-valve engine with 80 horsepower, which migrated here from the “tens”. Despite such low power, this unit is capable of accelerating the car to 170 kilometers per hour. The engine is designed to meet Euro-3 emission standards. Torque is 120 Nm.

Next in the line is an in-line four-cylinder unit with 89 horsepower. Despite such a small displacement of 1400 cubic meters, the engineers managed to get 127 Nm of torque from this engine. The car takes the first hundred faster than the previous one, but at maximum speed it lags behind by 5 kilometers per hour. Thanks to the use of distributed injection, engineers managed to reduce consumption to 7 liters per 100 kilometers in mixed operating mode.

And our line is completed by a 98-horsepower gasoline unit with a volume of 1599 cubic meters. This is a gearbox with an in-line arrangement of cylinders. There are four of them here, as in other modifications. The peak torque of the unit is 145 Nm, which is an order of magnitude higher than that of the 80-horsepower engine. The maximum speed of the car is 190 kilometers per hour. Despite the large volume, the fuel consumption of this engine is not much different from its predecessors. In average mode, Lada Kalina 1.6 consumes 7.2 liters per hundred kilometers.

If we consider the transmission, Kalina uses two types of gearboxes. The first is the familiar “mechanics”, and the second is a robotic AMT. It was developed jointly with German engineers. The mechanics have hardly changed over the 12 years of its existence. But a few years ago, AvtoVAZ engineers switched to a cable drive. This made it possible to reduce the wear of rubbing parts and increase the service life of the box as a whole. The gears no longer “walk” as before, but you can turn them on with two fingers. This is a great success. Finally, the car began to meet European standards. But the developers did not decide to stop there.

For the new car model, only one engine is available, but it should satisfy the requirements of any buyer: a four-cylinder petrol unit that is capable of producing 87 horsepower.
