The intrigue with the release of the new Lada line began with the demonstration of the Lada X Ray prototype. In principle, this model should have appeared first. But for a number of reasons Vesta became a pioneer. What is the reason for this decision? It is possible that the decision was influenced by the fact that the demand for a sedan in this class was higher. The variability and diversity of the expected range of configurations will allow us to thoroughly test the domestic market.
It's nice that the company's management took their job so seriously. In general, after Bo Andersson took over the leadership, the word “for the first time” absolutely fits many events. This immediately affected the build quality. Products of high production standards come off the assembly line. Car enthusiasts will also be pleased with the variety of models. The upcoming all-wheel drive Lada X Ray Cross 4x4 becomes a hit even before its release.
A similar evolution awaits Vesta. 2016 promises to be very interesting, as presentations and sales of a number of new cars are planned.
Characteristics of all-wheel drive versions of Lada
The exact date will most likely be announced in early 2016. Then they will probably announce the packaging for the first release. Many decisions will be made based on the results of an analysis of sales, wishes and requests of customers. Domestic motorists are not yet accustomed to such an attitude. Marketing research and surveys are already being conducted. It becomes clear that the demand for powerful domestic cars is great. Having abandoned the 11189 engine precisely because of its weak parameters, the front-wheel drive car of the first production is equipped with a VAZ 21129. But for a 4x4 layout this will not be enough. All-wheel drive Lada Vesta with the HR 16DE-H4M engine is a more feasible option.
The X Ray Cross will probably have a VAZ 21179 under the hood in its first release. The volume of this power unit is 1.8 liters, not much for a crossover, but this is just the beginning. We won't know all the secrets now. Surely, more complete information will appear very soon, and there will be further insider leaks in the form of videos and photographs. It will be all the more interesting to watch the development of the domestic automobile industry. Most likely, the interior will not undergo drastic changes. There will probably be improvements, but overall the interior has been decided.
The main surprises will be on the technical side. Interestingly, the Lada Vesta was placed next to the Kio Rio Hyundai Solaris. Despite the fact that Korean cars are somewhat more powerful, the overall impression in many respects is not in their favor. What competitors will X Ray fight for the buyer? In addition to being proud of the excellent design outside and inside, information about the car’s dimensions is also reassuring. Length 4315 mm. The body width is 1820 mm, with a height of 1625 mm. Short overhangs and a ground clearance of 210 mm imply high cross-country ability.
Possible modifications of all-wheel drive Lada cars
The popular Renault Sandero Stepway and Duster models are often cited as competitors. But X Ray is more compact. So it will win in cross-country ability, which is very important for the Russian car enthusiast. AVTOVAZ President Bo Andersson has already announced that production of the X Ray will begin in early 2016. The Cross modification will be launched a few months later. Who was driving all-wheel drive there? Installing it is not a problem, because the Xray is based on the same B0 platform as the Duster. But can you imagine how much the price will skyrocket? But Xray Cross is not cheap even with front-wheel drive. Although even for that kind of money, the new AvtoVAZ product is more profitable than its classmates. Competitors are either more expensive or worse equipped, and more often than not, both. Not counting the body kit made of unpainted plastic, the “base” already has 17-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, a double-barreled stainless steel muffler, LED running lights, an alarm system with central locking and rear disc brakes - by the way, they are here from “ Vesta." Even the new tires are not budget-friendly: the 215/50R17 all-season Continental, welded to AvtoVAZ’s special order, is wider and taller than that of the Vesta Cross. It also lies in the trunk as a full-size spare wheel, and on the original alloy wheel.
Contrasting brown inserts in the interior can be replaced with less intrusive gray ones.
The rear sofa cushion was moved back to the trunk by 2.5 cm - this modification, which made it possible to add legroom, was also received by the regular Xray.
High-profile tires added 5 mm to the hatchback's 195 mm ground clearance, and another 15 mm was gained due to new springs and shock absorbers. Moreover, they cannot be installed so easily on a regular Xray - you will have to change the front arms and CV joints. But we strongly do not recommend doing this, since it is unknown how such a car will drive. After all, the Xray Cross chassis was tuned not only for the new suspension, but also for the new electric power steering, installed instead of the electro-hydraulic one, which made it possible to reduce the gear ratio in the rack: from lock to lock, the steering wheel now makes less than three turns.
When creating the Cross, 170 new components were introduced into the Lada Xray design, and the list of changes itself is even longer! — Oleg Grunenkov, director of the Lada Xray Cross project, who went with us to Kazakhstan for the first test drive of the new product, was clearly proud of the work done.
Indeed, the list of improvements turned out to be large, and not all ideas were realized. Thus, although sound insulation has been improved, it is only on the wheel arches and sills: sandblasting is now inaudible, but the noise of the engine and tires quietly penetrates the interior. Although AvtoVAZ heard our complaint. But something remained unrealized due to the design features of the model. For example, no matter how hard you try, you won’t be able to make the car more spacious without increasing the wheelbase: new front seats with a deep recess for the knees, as well as a rear sofa moved closer to the trunk and slightly lowered down, only partially solved the problem of cramped conditions in the back row. With a height of 186 cm, I fit behind myself, although without any reserve in my legs. But now there are heated seats and a USB charging port - not every higher-class model can find this.
The trunk has a double bottom. Underneath is a full-size spare wheel on a cast wheel.
The driver’s seat has also become more comfortable: a central armrest has finally appeared, and the steering wheel has been adjusted for reach (for the first time among models on the B0 chassis!) and heated. Other innovations include heated front seats with three degrees of “roasting”, the buttons of which have moved from the side of the seat to the center console, and now it is clear in which mode it operates. There is also a button to turn on the heated windshield and the main feature of the new product - the regulator of the Lada Ride Select system, thanks to which the Xray behaves completely differently both on paved roads and off-road.
Rails appeared on the roof (an additional stamp had to be introduced to install them) and an antenna “fin”.
The system has four operating modes. The Sport button changes the speed of response to pressing the gas pedal, and also “unfolds” the stabilization system a little, allowing you to slide when turning. It was not possible to test sliding, but the more responsive accelerator was a great help both when driving in the city and when overtaking on the highway: with it, the 1.8 engine seemed to get a second wind (there would be another 6th gear!). There is also a regulator with icons indicating the “snow” and “sand” modes, although the first can be used not only in snow, but also in mud, and the second - on gravel. Both programs allow you to simulate differential locking by braking the drive wheels and limit the intervention of the stabilization system. If necessary, stabilization can be completely turned off, but, as in the first two cases, when accelerating above 58 km/h, the ESC system will “wake up”. However, you can lose control on slippery surfaces even at lower speeds, so you need to use these modes carefully.
“Come on, come on, dear!” — I encouraged the Lada Xray Cross, whose wheels were polishing the snow-covered slope near the hotel in the foothills of the Tien Shan. But the wheels finally found a grip, and we crawled to the top, although until the last moment I didn’t believe that I could climb. Before this, we already had to retreat: with standard settings, the car could only climb up to the middle of the climb, but with the “snow” mode activated, everything went much more fun. The car was slipping, but it was moving! Of course, Lada Ride Select is not a replacement for all-wheel drive, but it is a fact that the system expands the vehicle’s capabilities and helps overcome difficult areas. In the dry riverbed riddled with potholes, along which we drove before the snowfall, the car’s passability was limited only by the protruding “lip” of the front bumper that clung to the ground. And yet, there will still be skeptics who will say that this is another “scam” by marketers. But AvtoVAZ does not force Lada Ride Select on anyone - you can take the Xray Cross without it.
It’s only a pity that the manufacturer does not provide the ability to choose an engine, and the 122-horsepower 1.8 has an increased appetite not only for gasoline (our average consumption was 12.4 liters - this is a lot even taking into account long periods of parking with the engine running), but also, judging by according to the owners' reviews, to the oil. And the list of transmissions at the start of sales will be limited: a version with an updated “robot” version 2.0 will appear later. Machine? Variable speed drive? No, we haven't heard. However, this will not scare our people: judging by the sales statistics of other Lada models, every second Xray buyer will choose the Cross version.
Chassis
In addition to many updates in the cabin and the appearance of the Lada Ride Select system, Xray Cross also underwent modernization of the chassis. The front suspension arms are similar. It also comes with electric power steering. And, of course, disc brakes on all wheels. All this inevitably affected driving performance. The XRAY Cross rides on a winding road much nicer and clearer than the regular XRAY. Reactions to the steering wheel have become more accurate, and early drift of the front axle when overspeeding has disappeared. And an endless number of vibrations and shocks on uneven roads are no longer transmitted to the steering wheel.

Recently a new Lada car was released, called Xray. Together with AvtoVAZ developers, specialists from the Renault-Nissan alliance took part in creating the design of the car. That is why the Togliatti hatchback received a platform based on the French Sandero Stepway. The new Lada has a body that is practically no different from its brother from France. The only difference between X-Ray is the presence of a large number of chrome parts in its body.
New Tolyatti development
The domestic version of the joint development received a wider rear part of the body. This is achieved by increasing the rear axle by 32 millimeters. Thanks to this innovation, Xray has acquired better stability on the track. The creators of X-Ray hoped that such a Lada would, with its appearance, demonstrate a new direction in the further development of AvtoVAZ. Lada received its current name due to the fact that it has many elements made in the shape of the letter “X”. This applies to the radiator grille, as well as the side parts of the Lada car.
The rear of the Xrey, in the form of a special hemisphere, blends harmoniously with the roof. If you look at the Lada car from this angle, then this design gives the car a simple and attractive look. Here preference is given to living and natural lines. The wheel arches are marked with small arcs, on top of which there are curly lines. If you compare the internal design of the X-Rey with the design of previous Lada models, it has changed quite a lot.
The lower part of the front bumper has become much more massive. The developers claim that this helps improve aerodynamics. It also houses round fog lights. The interior of the car is also quite original. The simple dashboard is quite informative. The instruments are located in three round compartments; to the right of the driver is the on-board computer screen. Due to the fact that the monitor is mounted high, it is easy and convenient for the driver to read all the readings.
The sports steering wheel has a pronounced texture and looks original and modern. It has additional buttons with which you can control some functions, for example, add or decrease the volume of music. There are nice ventilation deflectors on the sides of the display, and the climate control system is located below. The interior is decorated with high-quality plastic. The chairs are covered with durable and beautiful fabric. Due to the fact that the front seats provide lateral support and the ability to adjust, it is very comfortable to sit in them.
The designs of the steering, power part of the body, suspension, and braking system turned out to be a complete coincidence with the design of the French Sandero model. However, the all-wheel drive version of the Cross has many significant differences.
VAZ developers claim that the prototype for creating a 4x4 crossover platform is the Renault Duster. The French equivalent has both all-wheel drive and separate front-wheel drive. The advantage of the serial Lada 4x4 is that it will be significantly cheaper than its French counterpart.
Cost of a new car
The all-wheel drive model is adapted to Russian roads. The vehicle is equipped with a reliable directional stability system, has increased maneuverability and a high degree of safety. The cost of such a car is 700 thousand rubles.
The advantages of the machine are:

In the city the car consumes about 10 liters of gasoline. The 1.6 cc engine develops power up to 110 horsepower. The mechanical transmission is borrowed from Renault. Due to the fact that the stabilization system transfers torque to the other wheel when one wheel slips, the vehicle has good maneuverability.
The luggage compartment has a capacity of 320 liters. However, with the rear seats folded down, its volume is 772 liters. Under the trunk there is a special recess for the spare wheel. On its side wall there is a niche covered with a plastic lid where the jack and wheel wrench are stored.

Due to the fact that the new Lada has regained its previous chain drive, there is no longer a need to frequently replace the timing belt. This version of the Togliatti car is equipped only with front-wheel drive. Testing of the new 4×4 all-wheel drive model is now being completed. The Xray's closest relative with front-wheel drive is the Renault Sandero. The independent front suspension received MacPherson struts. The rear semi-independent is equipped with a torsion beam. The 4x4 all-wheel drive vehicle is based on the French Renault Duster crossover. To engage all-wheel drive, a rear multi-link device is used.
Since the beginning of 2016, about ten thousand units of these Lada cars have already been sold. This sale significantly exceeds the result that experts predicted.
AvtoVAZ representatives stated with full confidence that mass production of the expected Lada X Ray crossover will begin in December of this year, but they will be able to purchase it only next year and not earlier than February.
After the front-wheel drive model appears on Russian roads, an all-wheel drive model of the car will be released, which will be fully adapted for Russian roads. The updated car will also be equipped with modern stability and safety systems and will have good cross-country ability.

So far they are saying that the manufacturer can follow two possible paths. In the first case, all-wheel drive will simply be added to the hatchback, and the Cross prefix will appear in the name. Lada X Ray Cross 4x4 in this version does not please car owners, because in this case the car will not receive other significant improvements that would significantly increase its performance and make it competitive.
The second way is more promising and assumes that in addition to all-wheel drive, the car will have different dimensions, which is what car owners expect. The start of sales of the Lada Xray 4×4 SUV has been postponed to the end of 2018* (see updated information below) not at the whim of AvtoVAZ management and not without good reason. This is due to the current state of affairs on the market.
According to marketers, the release of the Lada X-Ray 4x4 in 2016 is not the best option. They believe that this should be done a little later, when the Russian buyer is ready for it. Many experts argue that the Lada Xray Cross 4x4 will never go on sale at all, but it is clear that if necessary, domestic specialists are quite capable of converting the front-wheel drive model to 4wd.
The new technical characteristics of the Lada X Ray Cross will look something like this:
- standard 1.6-liter engine, with a choice between 106 and 114 horsepower;
- high-power engine with a volume of 1.8 liters, such a unit will produce 122 hp;
- transmission of two options - robot and mechanics;

What is the real ground clearance of the Lada X-Ray: indicators
Considering that not all regions of Russia have ideal roads, many potential buyers, when choosing a new car, pay special attention to ground clearance. At the same time, they are interested in real numbers. The thing is that often the parameters specified by the manufacturer turn out to be overestimated in practice. Of course, not everyone does this, and not always. However, the presence of this kind of precedents made many people rather skeptical about the data provided by the manufacturer. Real ground clearance of the Lada X-Ray
Not long ago, the Volzhsky Automobile Plant began producing the XRay hatchback, which looks very much like a crossover. The very impressive ground clearance also contributed to this deceptive impression. According to the manufacturer, the ground clearance of the X Ray (Ray) is 195 millimeters. We will also present other figures that are important in terms of cross-country ability. In particular:
- front and rear overhangs – 830 and 743 millimeters;
- approach and departure angles are 21 and 34 degrees.
Meanwhile, the proverb “trust, but verify,” as it turns out, also applies to the figures announced by AvtoVAZ. No, there is no deception of buyers here. It’s just that the manufacturer, when measuring ground clearance, apparently “forgot” to install crankcase protection. With this element, the vehicle's ground clearance is reduced to 190 millimeters. However, this figure is good enough even for Russian roads somewhere in the outback. And the difference is not so critical as to declare deception - rather, a little trick. In fairness, it is worth recalling that all automakers are guilty of this kind of tricks, so VAZ is not doing anything reprehensible in this case.
I would also like to note one more point. Surely, many people know that for the production of X-Ray they did not develop a new platform, but borrowed it from the Renault Sandero Stepway, an affordable car with high ground clearance and front-axle drive. Accordingly, VAZ designers simply did not have any special options in terms of changing the ground clearance.
By the way, an excellent budget SUV was previously created on the same platform - Renault Duster, loved by many for its excellent ratio between price and performance characteristics. This model is taller than X-Ray. It turns out that there is still some room for maneuver, albeit small. Accordingly, it is quite possible that the Lada X-Ray will appear with a ground clearance of 205, or even 210 millimeters. However, for now these are just rumors.

The car will no longer be afraid of snowy terrain, mud and off-road conditions, and its characteristics will allow you to easily and naturally cope with such obstacles. The start of sales of the Lada Xray Cross with all-wheel drive is once again postponed (well, if not forever), although great demand for this modification of the car is expected on the Russian market.

Of course, the “off-road” version of Xray, like Vesta, does not have all-wheel drive. And it is unlikely to happen. But this modification still has some alternative. This allows you to select one of five driving modes. It is also possible to disable the traction control system. There is also a sport mode, which sharpens the response to pressing the accelerator, and a “snow/mud and sand” mode, which not only changes the accelerator settings, but also allows a greater degree of slipping. We were able to fully test the latter mode in the Karakum sands. Of course, it will not replace all-wheel drive, but it will allow the car to move several tens of meters further than a regular XRAY.
